A few months ago, James Cameron made headlines by claiming he would only be making Avatar films for the rest of his career, claiming that the next few years were going to be dedicated to making Avatar 2 , 3 and 4 .
“I’m in the Avatar business,” said Cameron back in May. “Period. That’s it. I’m making Avatar 2 , Avatar 3 , maybe Avatar 4 .” However, it now seems he’s settling for 2 and 3 , with producer Jon Landau confirming the next two films will shoot back to back.
“We [ are ] doing two back-to-back, but not a third,” said Landau, before going on to give a brief update on how the next two sequels are coming along. “The scripts are pretty far along. We have a team of people already working on the film at Manhattan Beach Studios. We’ve been working with WETA Digital on technologies.”
“You know, Titanic was supposed to be a summer movie and it was a Christmas movie,” continues Landau. “We’re going to make the best possible version of these movies, and they will come out when they are exactly that.”
As for what happens after that, who knows? A 3D treatment for Terminator 2 and Aliens ? Landau wouldn’t rule it out.
“I think, if we get through the next two Avatars , Jim would love to,” he said. “I think Jim really feels that the 3D enhances the storytelling process, and I think both of those movies would be ideal candidates to do this with.”
