The Valheim roadmap has got a significant update from developer Iron Gate.
This week in an interview with PC Gamer (opens in new tab), Iron Gate has shared some more information about the specifics of planned title updates and gave us insight into an updated roadmap for the early-access title.
Hearth and Home, the first planned update, will add more when creating your own home. Henrik Tornqvist, co-founder of Iron Gate said: “As the name suggests, this will focus on the house building aspect of the game, with more building pieces and stuff to do in and around the house”.
Tornqvist goes on to mention that the update will “probably” be focused on food preparation aspects of the game, like adding more recipes, but there will also be some things to build inside your shiny new Viking home.
Iron Gate touched briefly on the next tile update after Hearth and Home, called Cult of the Wolf, but there wasn’t a whole lot to go on. Though sparse on details, Tornqvist said that Cult of the Wolf “will be an update that focuses on exploration and combat with hopefully some new fun and different encounters for the players”.
The next title update after Cult of the Wolf is Ships and Sea, which will, as you might expect, add more ship customization to the game, and “try to flesh out the ocean biome a bit more”, according to Iron Gate. The whole point of the Ships and Sea title update is to give people more things to do out in the ocean since it’s “not as populated” as the other biomes in the game.
There will also be a new biome added to the game at some point, which will arrive in the Mistlands update. Mistlands will bring “new enemies, new items, a new boss, new resources, everything, and that’s what we have planned for this year. So yeah, that’s quite a big task, but we will accept the challenge, so to speak”, said Tornqvist.
We can probably expect to see Mistlands much later in the year considering it’s the last of the updates planned for Valheim in 2021. But Tornqvist also mentioned that each new biome added to the game will come with its own boss for the whole area and that each one could get mini-bosses making appearances.
“In the finished version of the game, there will be nine biomes with nine bosses. And then we’re also exploring adding mini-bosses and stuff like that,” he said. “So yeah, there will be more bosses coming.”
Dates for all of these new updates haven’t been announced yet but, considering the game’s state as basically brand new, there might be some patience needed as we wait for these updates to roll out over the coming year.
“The whole team is working on fixing all the bugs that come to light when you suddenly get a million people playing your game,” said Tornqvist. “We’re five people, by the way, so we have quite a lot to do. But yeah, as soon as we feel ready, we will begin working on the updates outlined in the roadmap.”
Valheim might’ve only just launched on Steam in early access earlier this month on February 2, but it’s already sailed past one million players. In fact, it had a peak concurrent player count of just over 160,000 players, making it the fourth most-played game on Steam at one point in time. That’s quite the astounding feat from Iron Gate’s game.
If you’re unfamiliar with Valheim, it’s basically a Nordic survival game. You’re dropped into a Norse map with nothing but the clothes on your back, and tasked to forage and survive, fending off enemies and creatures alike as you try and build up your very own settlement. So far, this formula has proven to be a massive hit with Steam players.
