If there was one announcement guaranteed to send Twitter into a tizzy, it was the news that the new Batman has been cast. Announcing that Ben Affleck would be donning the cowl was just asking for trouble. The internet is wrong of course, dodgy Daredevil or no, Affleck’s been doing award-winning work for half a decade now and Batman is well within his capabilities. Still, that didn’t stop thousands of real human beings signing a petition to stop Batfleck from becoming reality, prompting this response from former Batman Val Kilmer:

It’s a sad fact of up-to-the-second social networking that, more often than not, it’s the first place you find out about the death of a person in the public eye. The caveat to this is that, not only can Twitter and the like be the bearer of bad news, it can also be the source of heartwarming tributes, and we’ve never quite such an overwhelming outpouring of emotion on Twitter as that which greeted the death of special effects genius Ray Harryhausen last week. Needless to say, the tweets speak for themselves:

Oscar weekend means one thing: Twitter feeds around the world filled with running commentaries of every twist and turn at the world’s biggest movie awards ceremony. Disappointing Twitter-news to start the week, Steven Moffat, a regular fixture on Tweets Of The Week (including today’s instalment) has left our beloved social network, presumably to write some brilliant episodes of Doctor Who , Sherlock or something equally less important than 140 character updates.

Reading between the lines/jumping to conclusions it’s easy to assume that the endless negative feedback users in the public eye with as many followers as Moffat must receive on a daily basis finally became too much for the Who overlord, a theory backed up by the fact he allegedly asked how to limit the number of @ replies he saw moments before leaving Twitsville.

In other news, it’s traditional to celebrate birthdays with an icing-laden cake and enough fizzy pop to rot the teeth of an entire classroom full of younglings, but in a digital age such tangible treats are a relic. Instead we have the Google Doodle, an ever-changing illustration, animatic or game on the Google homepage themed around a major event to take place on that day in history. September 7 marked to 46th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series , so to celebrate Google created a glorious, fully animated logo dedicated to Starfleet’s finest, and thanks to Twitter we know just how much the stars of Star Trek past, present and future appreciated it:

Twitter has become the first port of call for many in their tributes to fallen sci-fi icons. It will come as little surprise to learn, then, that the death of legendary author Ray Bradbury (opens in new tab) yesterday elicited an outpouring of emotion the scale of which we genuinely haven’t seen before, and from many you wouldn’t expect. The following is just a small sample. RIP Ray.
