Tweets Of The Week

Adam West, Joss Whedon and more weigh in on the Ben Affleck debate and JJ live-tweets Into Darkness in the latest Tweets Of The Week (opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

If there was one announcement guaranteed to send Twitter into a tizzy, it was the news that the new Batman has been cast. Announcing that Ben Affleck would be donning the cowl was just asking for trouble. The internet is wrong of course, dodgy Daredevil or no, Affleck’s been doing award-winning work for half a decade now and Batman is well within his capabilities. Still, that didn’t stop thousands of real human beings signing a petition to stop Batfleck from becoming reality, prompting this response from former Batman Val Kilmer:

While another Batman weighed in with some tongue-in-cheek advice:

@therealadamwest Remember Ben, with the cape and cowl comes great responsibility (and lots of heat). Bring deodorant. #batman @BenAffleck

Tweets Of The Week

Simon Pegg squashes Ant-Man rumours, Damon Lindelof on Into Darkness’ worst Star Trek ranking and Katee Sackhoff dressed as The Doctor in the latest Tweets Of The Week (opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

You can always rely on the internet to get the wrong end of the stick. The latest example: Simon Pegg, who’s perfectly innocent, Vin-Diesel-aping (opens in new tab) picture of himself pointing at a picture of Ant-Man in Marvel HQ was instantly taken as confirmation that Edgar Wright’s long-time collaborator would be stepping into the tiny shoes of Hank Pym:

(opens in new tab)

@simonpegg Fun at Marvel #3 pic.twitter.com/2hcVhG7695

(opens in new tab)

Pegg was quick to debunk the wildfire rumours:

@simonpegg FFS the Internet, all I did was point at the central character in my dear friend’s next movie, because I’m excited for him. #iamantman

@simonpegg Oh wait, I fucked up that hashtag. It was supposed to be #iamnotantman

@simonpegg I am however going to play Antnan, a film about the adventures of a tiny grandmother. #iamantnan

(opens in new tab)

Before gently mocking the movie media who jumped on the story based on extremely tenuous evidence, along with Wright:

Tweets Of The Week

Tributes to Ray Harryhausen, reactions to “Nightmare In Silver” and, er, George Osborne talking Star Wars in the latest Tweets Of The Week (opens in new tab) !

(opens in new tab)

It’s a sad fact of up-to-the-second social networking that, more often than not, it’s the first place you find out about the death of a person in the public eye. The caveat to this is that, not only can Twitter and the like be the bearer of bad news, it can also be the source of heartwarming tributes, and we’ve never quite such an overwhelming outpouring of emotion on Twitter as that which greeted the death of special effects genius Ray Harryhausen last week. Needless to say, the tweets speak for themselves:

(opens in new tab)

@simonpegg Ray Harryhausen an inspiration and a legend, even before he left us. His influence cannot be measured and has shaped cinema as we know it.

(opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

@Jon_Favreau RIP Ray Harryhausen. He was a source of inspiration, the master of stop motion, and even a voice actor in Elf. His work still holds up.

(opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

@RealReeceShears So sad to hear about Ray Harryhausen. His influence is/was immeasurable. We have lost something incredibly special. RIP Ray.

The Oscars go Star Trekkin , the Avengers reassemble and much, much more in the latest Tweets of the Week

(opens in new tab)

Oscar weekend means one thing: Twitter feeds around the world filled with running commentaries of every twist and turn at the world’s biggest movie awards ceremony. Due to a shortage of sci-fi and fantasy nominees (seriously, how did Looper not get nominated for best original screenplay?) at this year’s bash many of the best tweets fall outside SFX ’s remit, however, the show’s unexpected Star Trek obsession proved without a doubt that the Academy clearly have sci-fi at heart:

Tweets Of The Week

(opens in new tab)

@joelmchale http://lockerz.com/s/242349725

Disappointing Twitter-news to start the week, Steven Moffat, a regular fixture on Tweets Of The Week (including today’s instalment) has left our beloved social network, presumably to write some brilliant episodes of Doctor Who , Sherlock or something equally less important than 140 character updates.

According to his wife/ Sherlock producer Sue Vertue Moffat deleted his account because:

(opens in new tab)

@ suevertue For all asking @stevenmoffat is well and currently having a family lunch but he’s got a huge amount on and twitter was proving a distraction

Reading between the lines/jumping to conclusions it’s easy to assume that the endless negative feedback users in the public eye with as many followers as Moffat must receive on a daily basis finally became too much for the Who overlord, a theory backed up by the fact he allegedly asked how to limit the number of @ replies he saw moments before leaving Twitsville.

(opens in new tab)

@ Glinner So Moffat has left Twitter, shortly after asking how to limit the @’s he saw. Another victory for snide, pathetic bullies with zero class

(opens in new tab)

@ suevertue Obviously the new @stevenmoffat is an imposter and not The Moff. It’s just these sort of idiots that ruin Twitter for the majority of users

In other news, it’s traditional to celebrate birthdays with an icing-laden cake and enough fizzy pop to rot the teeth of an entire classroom full of younglings, but in a digital age such tangible treats are a relic. Instead we have the Google Doodle, an ever-changing illustration, animatic or game on the Google homepage themed around a major event to take place on that day in history. September 7 marked to 46th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series , so to celebrate Google created a glorious, fully animated logo dedicated to Starfleet’s finest, and thanks to Twitter we know just how much the stars of Star Trek past, present and future appreciated it:

Tweets Of The Week

Twitter has become the first port of call for many in their tributes to fallen sci-fi icons. It will come as little surprise to learn, then, that the death of legendary author Ray Bradbury (opens in new tab) yesterday elicited an outpouring of emotion the scale of which we genuinely haven’t seen before, and from many you wouldn’t expect. The following is just a small sample. RIP Ray.

(opens in new tab)

@ neilhimself Yesterday I recorded “the man who forgot Ray Bradbury”. Rest in peace, Ray. We won’t ever forget.

(opens in new tab)

@ Markgatiss ‘First of all it was October, a rare month for boys’. RIP Ray Bradbury. A dazzling, incredibly humane imagination like no other.

(opens in new tab)

@ JonCG_novelist ‘There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them…’ Ray Bradbury, RIP

(opens in new tab)

@ MargaretAtwood So sad to hear of Ray Bradbury’s death. @Sam__Weller + I planned to visit him just before ComicCon. Shadow Show tribute made him happy…

(opens in new tab)

@ ManMadeMoon Ray Bradbury passed away. Another amazing sci-fi visionary gone. Thank you for the ideas you left us, Mr. Bradbury. We’ll try to take heed.

(opens in new tab)

@ davegibbons90 RIP Ray Bradbury. I got to adapt a short story of his to comics once (Come Into My Cellar): couldn’t cut a word. Every one mattered.
