Cast your mind back to a time when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was something people were looking forward to. It was around then that Sony announced (opens in new tab) plans for – you guessed it – The Amazing Spider-Man 3 as well as a bunch of spin-offs involving some of Spidey’s most iconic baddies, the Sinister Six and Venom.
After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 turned out to be a bit of a dud, Sony scrapped those plans, and partnered up with Marvel to reboot the character for a third time with Tom Holland set to play the young webslinger. Now it looks as though Sony plans to make that Venom movie after all.
The studio has hired Dante Harper (Edge of Tomorrow) to work on a new screenplay for the film. But don’t get your heart set on a Spider-Man cinematic universe. In THR (opens in new tab)’s report on the revived spin-off, the idea is “envisioned as a franchise apart and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie (opens in new tab).” So if all goes well we’re looking at a number of movies based around the alien symbiote character.
You might recall Topher Grace played the razor-toothed Venom in Spider-Man 3 – or you might not want to recall it. He probably won’t be back in the role as Eddie Brock, the reporter who syncs up with the alien to become Venom. Probably.
