Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 lands a directorial duo

In what will surely prove a game-changing career move, co-directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg have been appointed by Disney to fill the directors’ chairs on Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 .

The duo beat off competition from the likes of Rupert Sanders and Fredrik Bond to secure the position, with both Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp having signed off on their appointment.

Rønning and Sandberg are best known for their work on Kon-Tiki , their dramatization of Thor Heyerdal’s epic raft-crossing of the Pacific in 1947, which was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Oscar.

If the duo seem like a bit of a gamble on Disney’s part, it’s probably worth remembering that Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was directed by Rob Marshall (who didn’t have much experience with tentpole blockbusters), and that film grossed over $1 billion.

The script is currently undergoing rewrites from Jeff Nathanson, with Rønning and Sandberg set to begin work on production towards the end of the year.
