If you’re in the New York area this Saturday and don’t have anything to do, head on over to Union Square where Nintendo will be hosting a full day of 3DS events, culminating in the official US launch of the system at midnight.
Beginning at noon on Saturday, Nintendo will have 3DS demo units set up outside at Union Square Park, so you can get your game on a good 12 hours before the device goes on sale. The company will also be hosting a full afternoon of live music “and other fun activities.”
Then, at 9 PM, all attention will shift to the Best Buy across the street, which has the honor of selling the first 3DS in the US. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime and others will be on hand to pump up the crowd, and eager people waiting on line will be treated with 3DS swag.
At some point, Nintendo will hand out 3D glasses to everyone and then encourage them all to throw the glasses up in the air – a symbolic photo op celebrating the glasses-free technology in the handheld system.
Earlier leaked reports about the event claimed that the nearby Empire State Building would be lit up red overnight in honor of Nintendo and the 3DS. Nothing about that was mentioned in the official press release, however.
A handful of GameStop locations around the country will also be hosting midnight launch events, so even if you don’t live in New York, you can still be part of the launch festivities.
