Eddie Redmayne looks incredible in first trailer for The Danish Girl

Focus Features has released the first trailer for director Tom Hooper’s real-life drama The Danish Girl starring Eddie Redmayne as artist Einar Wegener, the first person to ever receive gender reassignment surgery, and Alicia Vikander as her wife Gerda. Based on the novel by Tom Eberhart, the film chronicles Wegener’s transition as she becomes Lili Elbe and explores the inner workings of the couple’s marriage throughout that period.

From the outset the film appears stacked with Academy-friendly elements. Especially with the Oscar pedigree likes of Redmayne and Hooper both involved in a true story biopic – and one that tackles such a relevant topic. Check out the first trailer below:

Hooper’s blend of lightweight moments and heavier dramatics looks like a solid win, with Redmayne and Vikander both on top form. Co-starring Ben Whishaw, Sebastian Koch, Amber Heard, and Matthias Schoenaerts, The Danish Girl opens in the US on November 27, followed by a UK release on January 1, 2016.
