Michael Bay continues to be a big ole tease when it comes to Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth entry in the robo-franchise that’s just started shooting in Cuba. The director revealed the film’s official title a couple of weeks back (opens in new tab), along with a new image of Optimus Prime, and now he’s stepping things up. Nah, there’s no cutesy clapperboard image of the first day’s shooting. That’s not Bay’s style. This latest round of social media teasing is more grandiose, confirming the return of franchise villain Megatron.
Bay revealed the news over on Instagram (opens in new tab), and that was followed up by a teaser video posted to the official Transformers Twitter account:

Is it just me or does Megatron sound like a disgruntled T-Rex? Perhaps that’s a side effect of being resurrected. Megatron was apparently offed by Optimus in the third movie, Dark of The Moon, making his return rather unexpected.
With Megatron back in action, there’s a strong possibility that he factors into Paramount’s long-term plans for a brand new Transformers universe. It’s already been plotted out for the next ten years (opens in new tab). Bay is jumping ship (opens in new tab) after The Last Knight, so it will be up to another filmmaker to carry on the story through the various sequels and standalone movies. As Suicide Squad and its proposed spin-offs have made room for villains to get their own films, it makes you wonder if a Megatron solo movie might be on the cards?
Directed by Michael Bay and starring Mark Wahlberg, Jerrod Carmichael and Isabel Moner, Transformers: The Last Knight is scheduled to open in the US and UK on June 23, 2017.
