Strap in, Star Wars fans: we have enough updates about the future of the franchise to blast you into a galaxy far, far away. Want to know the latest about the rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi solo movie, the long-discussed Boba Fett film, and much more? The Force is strong with these possibilities.
StarWarsNewsNet (opens in new tab) has learned a galactic ton of information from a secret source, and they’ve offered a bunch of updates about a selection of different upcoming Star Wars movies that are worth breaking down individually. So let’s get to it.
Obi-Wan Kenobi solo film still in the works
Rumors about an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie (opens in new tab) have been flying for a while now, and now their source claims that Lucasfilm and the company’s president Kathleen Kennedy “fully intend” to make an Obi-Wan solo film with Ewan McGregor returning to play the character. The film is supposedly going to be set in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and will presumably focus on the Jedi’s activities during his time on Tatooine.
While some fans were hoping for an Obi-Wan trilogy, word is this will just be a single movie, and there’s the possibility it could be directed by Rogue One director Gareth Edwards (opens in new tab), who has previously expressed interest. It’s not set in stone, but Edwards clearly loves that time period in Star Wars history, so he’d be a good fit to bring that to life. Keep an eye out during this month’s Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida, because the source claims an announcement may be imminent.
Boba Fett bounty hunter movie will be an ensemble film
A film centered on Boba Fett (opens in new tab) has also been a highly-publicized point of contention in the Star Wars franchise. Fantastic Four director Josh Trank was all set to direct it a couple of years ago before he bailed at the last second, but StarWarsNewsNet claims the project is “not dead.” Additionally, they say it won’t be a Boba Fett solo movie after all, but more of an ensemble piece that follows multiple bounty hunters.
Also, while there was initially talk about this being an origin story (opens in new tab), the newest update claims that’s unlikely. That’s probably a good thing, since we’ve already sort of seen the origin of Boba Fett in the prequel trilogy. This may be an unpopular opinion, but Boba Fett is not nearly as cool as you remember. Go ahead, rewatch the original trilogy again and see what I mean.
Are we about to see the Twilight-ization of Star Wars?
We’ve never seen a young adult skewing Star Wars movie, but now that Disney’s in charge, they’re apparently looking to capitalize on every conceivable angle. The site claims that a new movie is in the works that will “target the young-adult audience and have slight romantic themes to it.” It’s described as a “tragedy” with a love story akin to Han and Leia’s in The Empire Strikes Back. I imagine the people who grew up with Star Wars won’t be thrilled at this idea, but depending on who becomes involved with it and the direction they go, it could actually be a cool opportunity to attract a whole new generation of fans to the overall franchise.
What happens after Episode IX?
The site has one more big piece of news from its source, and that’s how the studio is currently planning to give Star Wars movies a bit of a hiatus after Episode IX. The reason is they don’t want people to get too bored or used to the idea of seeing a new Star Wars movie all the time, so they’re attempting to generate some desire from the fans by making people wait a bit before they potentially launch a new trilogy. There’s also some discussion about the company getting more involved with Star Wars television projects, so we might actually see a live-action Star Wars show on the small screen.
Keep in mind that none of these projects have been officially announced yet, but if we see an announcement of an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie at Star Wars Celebration in a few weeks, it’ll certainly give the rest of these updates a lot more credibility.
