Profanity-ridden dialogue and hyperreal violence are but two aspects of Quentin Tarantino’s filmmaking style, a directorial approach that plucks from his favorite movies and genres with wild abandon. On that note, when he confessed last December to having a major soft spot for rom-coms – they’re a “guilty pleasure of mine ” he announced on Stephen Colbert’s show – it was an unexpected admission. Doesn’t he usually sit around watching gritty exploitation flicks?
During a recent interview with Metro (opens in new tab), Tarantino pushed that envelope even farther, as he went on to sing the praises of the latest Nancy Meyers outing. The film in question revolves around Anne Hathaway’s young CEO and Robert De Niro’s wizened old-school intern.
“One of my favourite movies this last year was Nancy Meyers’ The Intern,” he says in response to his participation in Hollywood Reporter’s recent director’s roundtable (opens in new tab) – an event that only featured male directors. “They’re not considering that for the Oscars even though I think Robert De Niro gave one of the best performances this year in that movie. I thought the script was actually one of her best. Right up there with It’s Complicated. They’re not asking her to be part of the discussion.”
De Niro is likeable as hell in the movie, but c’mon; would he really have stood a chance up against Leo’s scenery-chewing performance in The Revenant?
