Adam Wingard will direct Death Note remake

Exciting news for horror fans this morning with THR (opens in new tab) reporting that Your Next director Adam Wingard will take on the live-action English-language remake of Japanese animated shocker, Death Note.

For those not familiar with the original, the film will tell the story of a young man who discovers a magical notebook allowing him to take the life of anyone whose name he writes down. Deciding to purge the world of those he considers evil, he sets out on a bloody path of destruction, trailed only by a reclusive police officer…

Sounds like the perfect blend of horror and thriller for Wingard, who won rave reviews last year for his work on The Guest. The director is currently helming The Woods for Lionsgate, but is expected to begin work on Death Note when that film wraps up.

Shane Black had previously been attached to direct the project, while Gus van Sant was also interested at one stage, but Wingard is now the man officially in the hot seat. No release date has been confirmed as yet.
