Snoke is Darth Plagueis theory debunked by LucasFilm creative

There’s a lot of mysteries surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens (opens in new tab), but two in particular stand out: Who are Rey’s parents and who is Supreme Leader Snoke? With regards to the latter, it seems we can cross the former mentor of Darth Sidious (AKA The Emperor) off the list. Pablo Hidalgo, creative executive at LucasFilm, has declared (opens in new tab) that Snoke is definitely not Darth Plagueis.

@JediMasterPlant Snoke is not Plagueis. Dang. I lost the game.May 11, 2016

Plagueis was never seen on film, only referenced in a scene in Revenge of the Sith, where then-Chancellor Palpatine spoke of Plagueis’ rumored mastery over life and death. Because such fantastic power could theoretically be used to survive beyond death – and because Sidious has an established history of being a bold-faced liar – many suspected that Snoke was actually the Sith Lord resurrected or reincarnated.

Star Wars fans pressed (opens in new tab) Hidalgo on Twitter (to a frankly ridiculous degree), asking whether or not Plagueis was actually dead or if Sidious merely thought he was dead. As Hidalgo repeatedly reframed his statement with phrases like “Sidious killed Plagueis,” “he killed him,” “killed, as in ‘to kill,'” “like, there was killing,” and “he is dead,” I couldn’t help but be reminded of a certain deceased parrot (opens in new tab).

Plagueis is no more, folks. He has ceased to be.
