Xbox Series X controller and accessory compatibility is really important if you’re upgrading from an older Xbox One. Xbox Wireless Controllers and other peripherals, such as headsets and rechargeable batteries, aren’t exactly cheap. Even if you’ve managed to save some money thanks to finding a great Xbox Series X price, you’ll certainly want to get your money’s worth on older controllers, especially if they’re in good condition and not suffering from stick drift. The good news is that most of your previous-gen tech can be reused, but we’ve got all the information you’ll need about Xbox Series X controller and accessory compatibility below.

Can I use my old controllers and accessories with Xbox Series X and S?

Xbox One controller

Yes, almost all Xbox One controllers and accessories will be compatible with the Xbox Series X and S. Bear in mind that the new Xbox Series X and S controller has a USB-C connection rather than micro-USB, so you’ll need to use a different charging cable for each of them where applicable. Also remember that you won’t be able to make use of the new Xbox Share button when using an Xbox One pad, so you’ll have to use the alternate inputs for capturing screenshots and clips.

Battery packs that were designed for Xbox One controllers, such as the Xbox Play & Charge Kit, are also compatible with the new Xbox Series X and S controller. However, due to a small difference in size between the units, if the battery pack doesn’t fit correctly then don’t force it as damage may occur, and it should instead be replaced.

Can I use a Bluetooth headset with Xbox Series X and S

Apple Airpods

No, general Bluetooth headsets such as Apple Air Pods are not compatible with Xbox Series X and S, so cannot be used for that purpose. Instead, you will need to connect either a wired headset, or a wireless headset that has been specifically designed or adapted to work with the Xbox Series X and S.

The Xbox Series X is now widely available, but what if you don’t feel like dropping $500 / £450 on a new console right now? That’s where the Xbox Series S price comes in. At just $299 / £249, the slimmed down version of Microsoft’s latest console certainly offers a compelling budget argument. After all, if you’re just looking to make the most of a Game Pass subscription for as little as possible, do you really need all the bells and whistles of the top dog?

We would suggest not. Unless you’re keen to match your console with one of the best gaming TVs, or you’re after the best performance possible in 2022, the Xbox Series S will suit you just fine and won’t break the bank. To make sure you’re not missing out on anything integral to your experience, though, we’re taking you through exactly who should be shelling out for the main event, and who can get away with spending just $300 on their next console.

What do you lose when you buy Xbox Series S?

Of course, you’re spending around $200 less when you buy an Xbox Series S, so there are some sacrifices you’ll make:

  • No 4K resolution for gameplay
  • No disc drive
  • Less internal storage
  • 4 teraflops processing power compared to Series X’s 12
  • Less RAM

In practice, these features won’t make themselves known if you’ve never had your hands on an Xbox Series X. You won’t be juddering through the latest releases, and you won’t experience significantly longer load times. However, because the Xbox Series S can’t output at 4K resolution, your games won’t look quite as crisp. That’s not too large a pill to swallow if you don’t have a 4K TV, of course, but if you have invested in a high quality TV for Xbox Series X, it might be worth holding out a little longer and investing in the main console.

That said, considering it’s the cheapest full console on the market right now (Nintendo Switch Standard and Nintendo Switch Lite aside), there’s still a notable performance boost in an Xbox Series S over an old Xbox One. You’re still getting DirectX raytracing, up to 120fps, and an 8-core AMD Zen 2 processor at 3.6GHz. If you’re dipping in and out of Xbox Game Pass titles on the weekends, you really don’t need much more than that in 2022.

There is one more caveat to explore, though; the disc drive. You’ll be limited to digital experiences with the Xbox Series S. Unlike the PS5 Digital Edition, though, that’s not such a heavy blow. Game Pass offers such a compelling package by itself, that it’s easy to see a future where you won’t be buying games at all. With new Microsoft releases hitting Game Pass from day one, and a huge library ready to fill your backlog, there’s plenty packed into this subscription to keep you from reaching for a physical game. However, if you do have a physical Xbox One collection, you won’t be able to keep playing on your new console.

You’ll find the full Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S breakdown below.

Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S

Xbox Series X

  • 8-core AMD Zen 2 processor at 3.8GHz
  • 12 teraflops processing power
  • 1TB SSD
  • 16GB RAM
  • 4K resolution
  • Up to 120fps
  • 4K UHD disc drive
  • Variable refresh rate
  • DirectX raytracing
  • Dolby TrueHD with Atmos
  • HDMI 2.1
  • 15.1 x 15.1 x 30.1cm

Xbox Series S

  • 8-core AMD Zen 2 processor at 3.6GHz
  • 4 teraflops processing power
  • 512GB SSD
  • 10GB RAM
  • 1440p resolution
  • Up to 120fps
  • No disc drive
  • Variable refresh rate
  • DirectX raytracing
  • Dolby TrueHD with Atmos
  • HDMI 2.1
  • 6.5 x 15.1 x 27.5cm

Is Xbox Series S worth it in 2022?

So, is that $299 / £249 price actually worth it once you’ve dropped all the flashy features of the premium model? In certain situations, yes – the Xbox Series S is absolutely worth it in 2022. The ideal candidate for the cheaper console is someone who doesn’t have a 4K TV, wants to save cash by playing through Xbox Game Pass, doesn’t have too much space to spare, and doesn’t need super-fast processing speeds. Because of its 120fps capabilities, HDMI 2.1, and DirectX raytracing, the Xbox Series S is better value for money than the now-defunct Xbox One (assuming you can even get your hands on one), and will still give the latest releases a nice shine as well.

The Xbox Series S will play all the same games as the Xbox Series X, they just might not look as glossy. If you’re up against a strict budget, though, there’s far more power in this tiny device than you might think at first glance.

It’s also worth noting that we see far more discounts on the cheaper model, thanks to its historic reliability on the shelves. Xbox Series X deals could start appearing now that stock is more steady, but we wouldn’t expect the first price cuts for months yet.

Who should buy Xbox Series X?

If you’ve invested in a top of the range TV, you need a slot for all your old Xbox One games, and you want the best performance possible in 2022, you’ll have to shell out for the Xbox Series X. The Series S offers a strong bang-for-buck value, but it can’t compete with its fully fledged sibling in raw power. What’s more, Xbox Series X stock is far more readily available these days, so you’ll be able to find a console much more easily.

Sony expects Microsoft to keep Activision Blizzard-developed games multiplatform, it’s stated.

Earlier today on January 20, a Sony spokesperson said as much to the Wall Street Journal (opens in new tab). “We expect that Microsoft will abide by contractual agreements and continue to ensure Activision games are multiplatform,” the spokesperson told the outlet.

This is obviously a massive question that was immediately on the mind of players worldwide, when Microsoft announced the forthcoming acquisition of Activision Blizzard earlier this week. It was entirely possible that the company would make games like Call of Duty or Crash Bandicoot exclusive to Xbox platforms, cutting out PlayStation players entirely.

Several pieces of information could contradict this, though, including the new statement from Sony on contractual agreements. Firstly, Xbox boss Phil Spencer stress that the acquisition isn’t meant to “pull communities away” from PlayStation platforms. Secondly, one analyst believes that Call of Duty exclusivity for Xbox would make the acquisition “hard to get past regulators.”

Microsoft has a history of abiding by existing contractual agreements. When the company announced the acquisition of Bethesda parent company Zenimax back in 2020, Microsoft made it clear that they would follow the deals in place for Arkane’s Deathloop and Tango’s Ghostwire: Tokyo on PS5, for example.

However, it’s also reserved other upcoming Bethesda-developed games for Xbox platforms, revealing the upcoming Starfield to be an exclusive for Xbox and PC platforms, stamping out the possibility of a PlayStation launch. It’s still incredibly early days for the new acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, and it even remains to be seen whether the deal will actually receive the approval of regulators, but for now we’ll have to wait and see what Microsoft ultimately does with Activision Blizzard’s extensive catalog of games.

Here’s what the new acquisition by Microsoft could mean for Activision Blizzard games and studios.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said he would love to be able to ban users across different platforms however admits that it would be “a hard one” to do.

In an interview with The New York Times (opens in new tab), the Xbox president said: “Something I would love us to be able to do – this is a hard one as an industry – is when somebody gets banned in one of our networks, is there a way for us to ban them across other networks?” Meaning, Spencer proposes, that if you ban a player on one online gaming platform, they will also be banned on another.

Admitting that this would be a difficult thing to achieve in the industry, Spencer also suggests the idea of creating a “banned user list” which players can take to other platforms. He goes on to explain: “I’d love to be able to bring them to other networks where I play. So this is the group of people that I choose not to play with. Because I don’t want to have to recreate that in every platform that I play video games on.”

Elsewhere in the same interview, Phil Spencer also praised Netflix for its “smart” approach to the gaming industry, saying that: “I think it’s smart what [Netflix] is doing. They’re buying some studios. They’re learning about the creative process of interactive entertainment. And I think it’s a very smart way for them to move into the space.”

Xbox Series X accessories in the Christmas sales

1. Xbox Wireless Controller

Xbox Controller

While your Xbox Series X does come with its own gamepad, you’ll need an extra Xbox Wireless Controller of some description in order to play co-operatively, or competitively with your friends and family. Fortunately, there are many colors and styles available to add a touch of personality to your setup, most of which retail for $59.99 though prices will vary based on design.

A few options available to you besides the standard black (opens in new tab) are shock blue (opens in new tab), electric volt (yellow) (opens in new tab), pulse red (opens in new tab), and robot white (opens in new tab). We’re personally quite fond of the 20th-anniversary special edition model for $69.99 (opens in new tab) with its translucent black shell showing the internals akin to the first system in the family.

2. Turtle Beach Recon 500

Turtle Beach Recon 500

As great as gaming in front of the TV is, an Xbox Series X headset is instrumental for those wanting to hear and be heard in high fidelity. Out of all the options available on the market for Xbox accessories, the Turtle Beach Recon 500 offers incredible audio and microphone quality at a budget price. We’re comfortable recommending this model to anyone after a sleek looking, and high performing, headset. Keep in mind, however, it is wired.

3. PowerA Dual Charging Station for Xbox

With its modest asking price, the PowerA Dual Charging Station is a no-brainer for those wanting to keep their controllers juiced up and ready to go at a moment’s notice. There’s a neat LED light strip to indicate the battery percentage, which not only looks cool but is actually useful, too. The Seagate 2TB Game Drive for Xbox has all the space you need in order to store titles on without having to constantly make room for a new disc or download installation. 5. Zadii Hard Carrying Case for Xbox

It’s a lesser-thought-about Xbox Series X accessory, but If you’re planning to visit friends or family with your new console, then the Zadii Hard Carrying Case offers ample space and protection for the system. It’s been specifically designed for the platform to offer precision in a range of 2D and 3D fighters, especially with its 6-button layout, and octagonal D-pad. It’s perfect for those late night Tekken 7 bouts and vicious Mortal Kombat matches.

If you’ve got the extra cash to make some substantial headroom on your system, then it’s a worthy option.

8. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (3 months)

Game Pass Ultimate

It’s arguably the best value proposition in gaming right now, especially considering the fact that tonnes of games are going straight to Game Pass Ultimate on day one, such as the recently released Halo Infinite. You’ve got instant access to hundreds of titles on the system, as well as PC, and even your phone via streaming.

The PDP Gaming Remote Control is a dedicated accessory specifically developed for the console to help navigate through the system’s menus with ease. Update: Although the Halo Infinite Xbox Series X restock from yesterday is long gone, you might get another chance to grab the standard Series X later this week. Take a look at our write-up below for an idea of when to look.

Original story follows:

A Halo Infinite Xbox Series X restock has dropped without warning at Xbox.com (opens in new tab) in the USA, so hurry over there post-haste if you want to secure the console before it’s gone. Which probably won’t be long, all things considered – this special edition of the system is as hard to come by as standard Xbox Series X stock.

Although the Halo Infinite Xbox Series X restock is more expensive than the normal console at $549.99 (opens in new tab), it does include a unique, Halo-themed design to go with a digital version of the game itself, an in-game code for the Zeta Sky Armor Coating, and the Chosen Emblem/Nameplate. If you’d been waiting to invest in new-gen until the Master Chief’s latest outing dropped, that makes it a good two birds, one stone situation.

How is the rest of the week shaping up for standard Xbox Series X restock deals, then? Although we might see a drop from Best Buy (opens in new tab) on Wednesday, Thursday tends to be a safer bet. It’s usually one of the busier days of the week for stock action, and Walmart (opens in new tab) demonstrates this nicely.

Amazon (opens in new tab) is a little harder to predict, unfortunately. As per PS5 restock deals, the retailer is very unpredictable… unless you’re based in Amazon UK (opens in new tab), in which case drops before 9am BST mid-week are common.

While we’re on the subject of the UK, Smyths and Game (opens in new tab) often hit Thursday in terms of Xbox Series X restock deals as well. Keep an eye on them too.

Xbox Series X restocks: hints and tips

1. Be quick – stock moves fast

It seems obvious, but it’s always a good idea to get a shift on if you want the best chance of securing a Halo Infinite Xbox Series X restock. Deals don’t tend to last long, and we can’t imagine it’ll be any different this time. With that in mind, get on it immediately.

2. Sign in and get your payment details ready

Things often get busy when retailers get an Xbox Series X restock, so it’s a good idea to have your payment details to hand to avoid any hold-ups – the weight of traffic can slow down sites or make them glitch, and we’ve seen that sort of issue empty baskets and force users to start over again. At which point the console is probably gone.

3. Keep trying

Even if the Halo Infinite Xbox Series X restock appears to be out of stock, don’t give up right away. Retailers usually release consoles in waves, so try again by refreshing the page – you might get lucky.

Which Xbox should you buy?

Xbox Series X ($499.99) | Check for deals at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Unsure of which Xbox to get? Looking for the ‘full’ next-gen experience? The Series X is the best console for you. Besides being more powerful than the cheaper Series S, you’re able to display games in 4K and use discs (the Series S doesn’t have a disc drive, which means you’ve got to buy everything digitally).

Halo Infinite Xbox Series X ($549.99) | Check for deals at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Apart from the Halo theme, this is the same as a standard Xbox Series X. What you’re getting on top of the usual console is a unique Halo Infinite design, the Halo Infinite game itself, and an in-game code for the Zeta Sky Armor Coating and the Chosen Emblem/Nameplate.

Xbox Series S ($299.99) | Check for deals at Amazon (opens in new tab)
If you’re keen to save money or want to try out some Xbox games, the Series S is a good shout. While it’s not as powerful as the Series X, it still provides a new-gen experience and can play the same games. Just remember, it can’t display those games in 4K and doesn’t have a disc drive, so you’ve got to buy everything digitally.

A smaller Xbox Series X and S expansion card may open up the console’s storage options soon.

Xbox Squad (opens in new tab), a French Xbox news site, says it caught word of a new official expansion card on the way (as spotted by VGC (opens in new tab)) and it even shared an image of a store listing for the new card on French gaming retailer Micromania. The image lists the price of the 500 GB card as €154.99 (roughly $180 or £130) and says its release date is set for November 14, 2021.

Those converted prices aren’t a whole lot less than the standard 1TB Seagate Storage Expansion Card, which currently sells for $220 / £220 as its standard price. However, it’s worth remembering that manufacturer prices often vary quite a bit between regions even beyond accounting for their currencies.

More options for storage expansion cards is a good thing, because right now they’re the only way you can make more room for Xbox Series X games on your console without needing to archive them on an external drive. You can play previous generation Xbox games straight from a standard external drive if you prefer, but new-gen Xbox games require faster storage to function.

Assuming this 500GB drive is legitimate, hopefully that means Microsoft and its partners are working on bigger storage options too – you can never have too many games installed at once.

Looking for advice on how to watch the Xbox Gamescom 2021 showcase? It’s due to take place this evening (August 24) and if you want to watch along, here’s how to do it.

Microsoft says that the show, which is due to run for about 90 minutes, “will be packed with updates on some of the biggest games coming to Xbox, upcoming releases on Xbox Game Pass, and more.”

The showcase will start this evening, August 24, at 10:00PT/13:00 ET/18:00 BST, and you’ll be able to catch it on Xbox’s official Twitch (opens in new tab), YouTube, Facebook (opens in new tab), and Twitter (opens in new tab) channels. You can also check the stream out in the video embedded below. There’ll also be region-specific streams, versions of the show with American Sign Language and English Audio Descriptions,  and subtitles available in 30 languages – you can find a full list of languages and features here (opens in new tab).

While you can watch the stream at 1080p at 60fps, Microsoft says that “for a more representative look at the visuals contained in the showcase, we recommend watching the 4K/60fps rebroadcast of the showcase.” That’ll be available on the official Xbox YouTube channel some time after the premiere has finished.

While we know that Microsoft is showing off some of the new games on the way to Xbox Series X, we don’t know much more when it comes to what to expect. With Halo Infinite set to release in the next few months, however, and no official release date in sight, it seems likely that we’ll be getting some kind of update from developer 343 Industries.

Here are some of the upcoming Xbox Series X games that we might see later today.

An Xbox Series X owner has shared a tip to help players ensure that they aren’t wasting huge amounts of hard drive space.

In a post (opens in new tab) on the console’s subreddit, user tamdelay said that “if you have a USB external [drive] there is a small to medium risk that you may have accidentally installed the same game to both drives twice.” That’s a total of four games, filling up way more space on your console’s SSD and your external storage than you need.

Tamdelay says there are two ways in which the duplication can happen. If an Xbox One game on USB gets an upgrade to the Xbox Series X version, it can be cloned onto the internal SSD. Alternatively, if a download fails and is restarted on a different drive, it can show up on both storage solutions.

Deleting a copy of the game is relatively simple, but it can be hard to tell which games are duplicated without going through your entire library and navigating to the ‘Manage’ screen on every entry. Fortunately, tamdelay points out a quicker route, sending players through console settings, then devices, and into the media remote menu. From there, there’s an option to choose a custom app for the remote guides button. Open that and scroll through the resulting list of all the games on your system, where duplicate games will have a number in brackets next to their title; for example, the ‘correct’ version of Halo 5 would appear unchanged, but a duplicate version would be named “Halo 5 (1).”

You won’t be able to delete the games from this menu, but if you make a note of the duplicate games, your journey through the ‘Manage’ screen should take a lot less time. Tamdelay says that they saved almost 200GB of space across their internal and external storage, having accidentally filled space by migrating and upgrading large games like Gears 5.

The Xbox Series X ships with 1TB of storage, which is a decent amount of space that it’s relatively easy to expand, but with some games regularly taking up 100GB or more, players can quickly run out of room, so tips like this can make a significant difference.

If you’re trying to maximise your storage, here are some of the best Xbox Series X external hard drives you can buy right now.
