]]>On April 26 in the pages of Justice League #75 (opens in new tab), nine of the ten core members of the Justice League including Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman were gathered in deep space to battle a conglomeration of the most vicious villains in the universe known as the Dark Army and were during the fight – with only one member returning alive.

And so, the comics world is mourning the sudden, sad deaths of the Metropolis’s Man of Steel, Gotham City’s Caped Crusader, and the Warrior Princess of Themyscira along with Aquaman, Zatanna, John Stewart (Green Lantern), Green Arrow, Black Canary, Hawkgirl, and Martian Manhunter. And in a larger sense, the world also mourns the loss of the preeminent superhero organization the Justice League itself, which will remain dormant for the foreseeable future according to a spokesperson for the organization, DC writer Joshua Williamson.
The Justice League was founded in 1960 when the alien conqueror Starro first attempted to conquer Earth, with Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter joining forces to defeat the psychic starfish, along with an assist from Superman and Batman, a tale told in the immortal The Brave & The Bold #28 (opens in new tab).
Shortly after, the team was officially codified with Superman and Batman joining up during an attack by another alien despot, Despero, who attempted to use his mind-control abilities to commandeer the League.
This burgeoning era is chronicled starting in Justice League of America #1 (opens in new tab) (also in 1960), which began the League’s original heyday. In these years, they expanded their membership quickly, bringing in heroes such as Zatanna, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and many more – forming a core membership roster that has lasted off-and-on as the heart of the Justice League until their deaths on April 26.

Through the decades, the League has protected the Earth from threats greater than most of us could even imagine, from the existential destruction of reality itself to countless alien invasions, and the innumerable plots of those who would use their own superpowers for evil instead of good.
The world may never see the likes of the Justice League again – let alone the individual heroes such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
And though there are still those with the power to step into the shoes of Earth’s greatest protectors, most of us will be left with a sentiment perhaps best expressed by Superman himself in his eulogy for Martian Manhunter’s first funeral during the Final Crisis (opens in new tab) event: “We’ll all miss [them], and pray for a resurrection.”
The Justice League is survived by the Titans and the Teen Titans.

]]>Dark Crisis is set in the future, when the Justice League is dead, even though there is no longer a monthly Justice League title, the dead Justice League members such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Aquaman are still alive and kicking in their ongoing series.
But June’s The Flash ongoing begins a story arc trying into the events of Dark Crisis, and DC is launching a new limited series Dark Crisis: Young Justice (there’s that Dark Crisis-colon stuff we told you to look for) in which Tim Drake, Impulse, Superboy, and Cassie Sandsmark get the band back together in the wake of the world mourning the loss of the dead Justice Leaguers … who aren’t dead in their own titles.
Hmmm, we’ll have thoughts on that game of DC continuity Jenga another time, but until then check out the rest of what DC has in store for June, including its Pride Month celebration with a new volume of its now-annual DC Pride anthology and new series starring Nubia, the Earth-11 Teen Justice, Poison Ivy, and a Tim Drake special, who reunites with his old Young Justice teammates Impulse, Superboy and … wait a minute.
No, as we say … another time.
The still-alive Batman returns to Gotham City, Black Adam also gets a new series, Flashpoint Beyond keeps going, Aquaman and the Flash team-up before or after they die in the new series Voidsong, and the Earth-Prime CW-DC comic book series wraps up.

Spoilers ahead for Dark Knights of Steel #2
Dark Knights of Steel is set in a medieval-like/fantasy world in which numerous recognizable DC characters appear in familiar roles comparable to their contemporary status quos – but with the aforementioned medieval twists.
Black Lightning, Batman and all his Robins, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Harley Quinn, and more all appear, with the biggest difference between the world of Dark Knights of Steel and the DC Universe most fans know is that Superman’s parents Jor-El and Lara accompany baby Kal in a spaceship escaping the destruction of Krypton.
Landing on this medieval-like world, Jor-El and Lara wind up as monarchs of a kingdom at war with a rival nation led by Black Lightning.
Set immediately after the murder of Jor-El in issue #1 by an assassin who’s referred to as the Green Man (the presumably but so far not-fully-revealed Green Lantern of this world) and Oliver (Green Arrow, of course), and Lois Lane is sent to Amazon Island to deliver the news of Jor-El’s death.
There, readers meet the Dark Knights of Steel incarnation of Diana/Wonder Woman along with someone who looks a lot like the traditional DC Universe’s Supergirl/Kara Zor-El – but who in this reality is surprisingly revealed as Princess Zala, Jor-El’s daughter and Kal-El’s sister.
Which makes her Superman’s second sibling to be introduced in the first two issues of this series – and the first brand new character to be introduced as a Kryptonian sibling for Kal-El, albeit in an alt-reality.
Zala, like her brother Kal, has yet to discover Bruce Wayne is secretly their half-brother (as revealed in the final pages of the first issue) in what’s quickly becoming DC’s very own super-Game of Thrones style epic.
The pair briefly grieve Jor-El’s murder, and Diana offers Zala comfort, revealing Diana and Zala are lovers and partners before Zala flies off.
The moment adds a second upending of Earth-Prime continuity and its traditional relationships and a fun twist to what’s been a decades-long flirtation between Superman and Wonder Woman over their history, which was fully consummated during the ‘New 52’ era when the publisher rebooted the Man of Steel’s long-time relationship with Lois Lane and Clark and Diana officially but briefly became a couple.
And while it’s not Kara per se, the moment could be seen as something of DC’s answer to another version of Supergirl, the WB’s live-action Kara Danvers, whose romantic relationship with Lena Luthor that was never fully embraced onscreen despite loyal fans clamoring for confirmation of their romance before the series ended last month – a media trope sometimes derisively called ‘queer-baiting’ in which characters are implied to be queer with stories and subjects that relate to queer fans, without ever confirming the character’s sexuality or place in the queer community.
The comic book version of Kara/Supergirl herself is something gay icon. And though she’s never been outwardly portrayed as queer, she’s been perceived as ‘queer-coded’ before, meaning aspects of her story and personality are relatable to queer fans, despite there being no official confirmation of the character’s sexuality.
In creator Mariko Tamaki and Joëlle Jones’s 2016-2017’s out-of-continuity Supergirl: Being Super (opens in new tab) limited series, Kara is not expressly codified as being queer, though writer Tamaki has related the emotions and experiences of her version of Supergirl to her own experience as a queer woman.
The Supergirl-Wonder Woman relationship and passionate kiss also further DC’s ongoing embrace of the LGBTQIA+ community in more recent years, and especially in 2021. The publisher recently reunited the fan-favorite couple Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, and introduced high-profile, attention-grabbing storylines in which Alan Scott/Green Lantern, Tim Drake/Red Robin, and Jon Kent/Superman all began journeys discovering and embracing their queerness.

We’ll see where Zala’s relationships with Kal and Diana go in upcoming issues, but it may not be all idyllic sibling and romantic love as in the final pages of the issue, Zala straight-up murders Black Lightning’s son in retaliation for the murder of her father. King Jefferson Pierce appears to have Jor-El killed based on his advisor Constantine’s prophecy around the aliens-versus-magic-users feud between the Kingdoms.
Zala almost gleefully dropping Black Lightning’s son out of the sky to his death will certainly escalate the war between the kingdoms and complicate her relationships.
But you’ll have to wait until January’s Dark Knights of Steel #3 to find out.
Despite the brevity of the relationship, the Wonder Woman-Superman pairing still makes them one of the most iconic superhero couples of all time.

Batman (no, not that one) leaves Gotham City for the real-world New York City in I Am Batman #6 by John Ridley and Ken Lashley, and Jace Fox is bringing the entire Fox family with him to the Big Apple.
As for Gotham City, the extended Bat-family contends with Batman (yes, that one) leaving his home city in the continued ‘Shadows of the Bat’ event in four issues of the weekly Detective Comics.
In the main story by writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Max Raynor of two serialized tales, Psycho-Pirate is back in Gotham after interning for Darkseid for a few weeks in Infinite Frontier and is making his presence felt in Gotham’s new criminally-insane asylum Arkham Tower.

Promising to “redefine the future of DC’s Amazons,” with Wonder Woman “fighting for justice on a cosmic scale,” which in turn leaves Queen Hippolyta to “depart for Man’s World,” Nubia is left to lead Themyscira as new tribes of Amazons appear and she and Yara Flor find themselves “in the heart of a power struggle.”
Wonder Woman “fighting for justice on a cosmic scale” likely indicates she’ll be busy in events in Brian Michael Bendis’ monthly Justice League comic book title and/or his January-launching Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes six-issue limited series and/or a Darkseid-centric new Crisis event DC has been setting up for most of 2021.

“All the damage from ALL the Crises was undone…”
Long-time DC readers might have missed that little nugget of perhaps vital information, slipped somewhat inconspicuously into a May 25 press announcement from the publisher about the fourth and fifth issues of the upcoming six-issue limited series Infinite Frontier, on sale in August.
Written by Joshua Williamson, Infinite Frontier springs from the game-changing events of January’s Dark Nights: Death Metal #7 by writer Scott Synder and its brief exposition-heavy epilogue which was more or less reiterated in March’s Infinite Frontier #0 (opens in new tab) framing story written by Williamson, Snyder, and James Tynion IV.
The 10-page Death Metal epilogue mainly defined the parameters of a new, bigger DC Universe. It also set the stage for the events of the Infinite Frontier (opens in new tab) series, some story developments in other regular titles, and likely a major DC event that pits the DCU against a powered-up Darkseid in the months to come. But in terms of its effect on continuity, the impact of Death Metal was relatively vague.
“The timeline was unknotted once and for all and all our memories returned,” Barry Allen explains to Wally West (bolding DC’s).
“…with our past finally set, myriad new futures are opening up. And as Hypertime heals, we’ll likely experience flashes of them — and even alternate pasts — in pretty epic fashion,” Hawkgirl adds.

It was somewhat up for interpretation what “our past finally set” and “all our memories” mean. While Snyder referred to Death Metal as an “anti-crisis,” since 2016’s Rebirth (opens in new tab) DC has mostly been specifically preoccupied with undoing – sometimes pointedly – the effects of the 2011 full ‘New 52’ reboot.
In DC terms – “set” and “all” have been relative to the pathway of various reboots and retcons that have come before.
But DC hadn’t really said out loud it was undoing “all” Crises since and including 1986’s Crisis on Infinite Earths (opens in new tab), at least until that press release’s seemingly throwaway line.
In past years that would have been cause for a close examination of what was still official continuity/canon and what was the new official DC timeline.
And DC would have done it itself – likely in the pages of a heavily-marketed event series.
But the publisher doesn’t seem inclined to explain this time around. And as has been its M.O. in more recent years, it isn’t answering questions about continuity either.
So when it comes to determining what the official DC timeline is, or simply if there even is one, we readers are likely on our own until further notice.
Individual readers may or may not embrace this editorial new era that emphasizes that all DC stories happened and it’s more or less up to them to determine how – not even mentioning if the how even matters to them at all. But either way, it is a sea change from the publisher’s previous every-five-years-or-so preoccupation with offering in-story explanations to try to make narrative sense of its now 80-year-old timeline.

And if not, what does that mean for The Legion of Super-Heroes?
These are just some of the questions very familiar to hardcore DC readers whose answers have been (for lack of a better term) ‘fluid’ since 1986 when they needed to try to make logical sense of the various reboots DC has decided was necessary to update its core characters.
This story could be a laundry list of what DC seems to be calling the “damage” the Crises caused. John Byrne’s Man of Steel (opens in new tab), Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One (opens in new tab), George Pérez’s Wonder Woman (opens in new tab), and Tim Truman’s Hawkworld (opens in new tab) come immediately to mind when thinking about the post-Crisis touchstones that long-term only wound up adding to the confusion the original Crisis endeavored to fix and resulted in the need for maintenance Crises and reboots since.
But trying to explain all the retcons that have been retconned and then retconned again would take too long and induce too many headaches to detail today.
Suffice to say in more recent years DC has increasingly relied on straight-up meta-commentary and explanation to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Google “Superboy-Prime, punch” for more on that topic.
Death Metal essentially cemented the meta-premise DC is increasingly moving towards – that the superheroes of the DCU know their existence is part of the fabric of a story and gets edited and reinterpreted in the telling all the time.
This approach was somewhat pioneered and long-advocated by writer Grant Morrison, who started in this direction in their 1988-1995 Vertigo series Animal Man (opens in new tab) and later embraced in the much more mainstream two volumes of Batman, Incorporated (opens in new tab).
Despite those latter series coming on the immediate heels of the ‘New 52’ reboot, Morrison more or less picked up on whatever past Batman continuity threads they wanted, prior rewritten timelines be damned.
(And btw, Morrison gives a thumbs up to the new approach DC seems to be taking).
But even if long-time readers previously concerned with continuity accept the new DC dogma that all DC stories have happened in the DC Omniverse, that the Clark Kent in Action Comics was and was not Superboy… that the answer to who co-founded the Justice League – Diana or Dinah is “yes” … that Superman both inspired the Justice Society to form and came to Earth years after the JSA’s heyday – there’s still a fair question of narrative structure.
Characterization is based on past experiences. Relationships are structured on history. Drama is based on stakes that can’t be revoked. All of these are magnified that much more in serial fiction.
Stakes have always been marginalized at the ‘Big Two’ comic book publishers where death is merely a temporary inconvenience, but history and experience don’t have clear definitions in the DCU anymore, where do characterization and conflict come from?
Is DC now simply relying on the micro over the macro-view? Is it basically indirectly telling its readers to pay attention to the now, and don’t spend too much time or energy thinking about how it fits with the then and later?
Somewhat interestingly, while the publisher won’t confirm and the individual players aren’t talking, in early 2020 DC seemed on the path to doing what it’s done in the past – offer an in-story device to explain a timeline in which Batman and Superman began their careers in the late ’30s but they’re both in their 30s today.
The recent two-issue series Generations: Shattered and Generations: Forged (opens in new tab) presented a DCU in which everyone just lived longer, therefore the Bruce Wayne/Batman who began his career in 1939 is still the same Bruce Wayne/Batman of 2021 and he experienced every story in-between.
It is an all-compassing way of explaining DC’s (and to be fair Marvel’s) biggest narrative dilemma – how to explain decades of stories in the real world in a fictional world in which time is more or less static.
Now even Generations unique spin requires some participation from the reader to make sense of (‘Batman: Year One’ again springs to mind), but there is evidence to suggest DC was headed in the direction of making a timeline like that canon and not just what’s now an alternate Earth story that ironically and somewhat confusingly enough, is also officially in-continuity.
The sudden and surprising exit of DC co-publisher Dan DiDio in early 2020 on the eve of the launch of the then-larger Generations publishing initiative (Shattered and Forged were part of a briefer, reimagined version) and whether it was a key factor in his exit will always be a matter of speculation until someone addresses it publicly (which won’t be DC).
Either which way, if you happen to be interested in reconciling how the Superman of 2021 fits together with the Superman of 1986’s Man of Steel fits together with the Superboy of 1982’s Legion of Super-Heroes storyline The Great Darkness Saga (opens in new tab), for now at least you’re gonna have to figure that out for yourself.
DC may have reached the point where it knows any answer it gives will just create three more questions.
But hey, we’ll keep asking.

In the just-released description of August 10’s Batman: Urban Legends #6, the latest installment of Matthew Rosenberg’s serial in the book – which previously followed Grifter – now turns to focus on Zealot. This was announced as part of DC’s August 2021 schedule.
“The HALO Corporation sent their top field agent, code name Zealot, to hunt Maxwell Lord,” reads the description of the Batman: Urban Legends #6 story. “But the villain has a guardian angel in the form of…Wonder Woman?! A throw down for the ages will ensue!”
Eagle-eyed WildStorm fans will remember that Zealot was teased in Batman: Urban Legends #1 as a police officer mentioned “a chick with swords” at a crime scene, and Grifter talked nondescriptly about dating a woman who feels like she’s from another planet.

That planet is Khera, as she is Kherubim – one of the two races whose war instigated the original creation of the flagship WildStorm team the WildC.A.T.S.
After the closure of WildStorm in 2010, Zealot made her formal DC debut in the ‘New 52’ Deathstroke title. But given the new status quo of the DC Omniverse and the idea that everything happened, it’s not clear if this is the ‘New 52’ version, the WildStorm original, or some new iteration.
As a bonus, Zealot’s Batman: Urban Legends #6 story is seemingly drawn by WildStorm alum Chris Sprouse, who has drawn Zealot and Grifter on numerous occasions. It must help that the Batman group editor Ben Abernathy is also – you guessed it – a WildStorm alum.
As for my mention that Zealot may show up before this solicited Batman: Urban Legends #6 story, given Rosenberg is writing all the Grifter stories in Batman: Urban Legends #1 – 5 and has mentioned her already, he could decide to slip her in before her formal story begins in August.
This is part of a larger WildStorm integration in what DC publisher/chief creative officer (and WildStorm founder) Jim Lee calls a “thoughtful, deliberate, creative way when it makes sense.”
Batman: Urban Legends #6 goes on sale on August 10.

But somewhat oddly, DC makes no mention of the fact the series was originally announced as a 16-chapter weekly digital-first series that was supposed to debut April 14 but never appeared on digital platforms.

The publisher has not responded to inquiries regarding why Justice League: Last Ride did not debut digitally in April.
The what appears now to be an eight-issue monthly series without weekly digital chapters deals with the “last days” of the Justice League as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman “have gone their separate ways, their once unshakeable bond broken by betrayal and mistrust.”

Former Marvel ‘exclusive’ writer Chip Zdarsky is launching a new Justice League limited series that will start with DC’s iconic superhero team broken up in “anger in distrust” – just when a looming cosmic threat needs them most.

“Once, the Justice League was the most powerful collection of superheroes in the universe. But an unthinkable tragedy within its ranks has caused Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to go their separate ways, leaving the League broken and disbanded under a veil of anger and mistrust,” reads DC’s description of Justice League: Last Ride. “Now, against the backdrop of the universe’s greatest murder trial, can the League reconcile the past before they’re eradicated by the greatest villains in the cosmos?”
So just who is the cosmic threat? And who was murdered, and is on trial as the murderer(s)? DC has not disclosed that.
From the covers revealed, this Justice League line-up includes Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), and the Flash. Interestingly, there’s a looming Mogo in the background of the primary cover by Darick Robertson.
Justice League: Last Ride by Zdarsky with artist Miguel Mendonça and colorist Enrica Eren Angiolini will be a 16-chapter, weekly digital-first limited series debuting this April on all of DC’s digital platform partners. An 8-issue print edition of this series will begin the following month.
Justice League: Last Ride is Zdarsky’s first standalone series at DC following short stories in the past several months in several DC anthologies.
Justice League: Last Ride #1 (of 16) goes on sale digitally April 14, with 15 subsequent chapters to follow weekly. The eight-issue print edition of Justice League: Last Ride debuts May 11.

]]>Then in March, the regular DC title lineup resumes with the numbering of existing series in-tact, “continuing existing storylines from 2020 and introducing new arcs for the year.”
In other words, and as we’ve been reporting for a while, Future State will not lead to a reboot.
“In DC Future State, the Multiverse has been saved from the brink of destruction, but the triumph of DC’s heroes has shaken loose the very fabric of time and space!” reads DC’s description. “The final chapter of Dark Nights: Death Metal (on sale January 5, 2021) brings new life to DC’s Multiverse, kicking off this glimpse into the unwritten worlds of DC’s future!”

DC did not mention January 5’s Generations: Shattered #1 and February’s Generations: Forged #1 and declined to answer questions about them, but expect the two specials to act as bookends to Future State.
Future State will feature some existing characters in new roles and new characters taking on iconic identities.
“The DC Universe has always been fertile ground for new and refreshing takes on our characters, and DC Future State definitely contributes to this legacy,” says DC executive editor Marie Javins. “When the event begins in January, some savvy readers will not only pick up on some of the breadcrumbs that have already been tossed out in our current titles, but they will also find new hints and clues of what’s to come in 2021.”
In January and February, the Future State line-up is split into three families – Batman, Superman (which includes Wonder Woman), and Justice League – and will feature a combination of monthly and bimonthly oversized anthology titles along with a one-shot, one three-issue monthly limited series that extends into March, and 14 two-issue monthly limited series.

The event features a combination of familiar DC creative talent like Mariko Tamaki, Brian Michael Bendis, Gene Luen Yang, Joëlle Jones, Joshua Williamson, Nicola Scott, Cully Hamner, and John Timms along with creators from the worlds of TV, movies, and animation and other DC publishing lines including John Ridley, Brandon Vietti, Meghan Fitzmartin, Brandon Easton, Alitha Martinez, L.L. McKinney, Paula Sevenbergen, and Siya Oum, among others.

Superman Family
“Due to his involvement in an international crisis happening in the near future, Clark Kent has been rejected by Earth, causing him to focus his lifesaving efforts outside his adopted home,” reads DC’s description. “He travels to Warworld to rise through the ranks of gladiatorial combat in order to defeat Mongul with the help of some unlikely heroes.
“Back in Metropolis, Clark’s son Jon has taken on the mantle of Superman. After seeing the horrors that befell Gotham, he bottles Metropolis in order to keep it safe, putting him at odds with Supergirl.”
A Shilo Norman/Mister Miracle story connects the two oversized Future State: Superman titles, as he “finds himself caught between the city he grew up in and the battle-torn planet that could be his downfall.”

Like most all variant covers, these will be exclusive to print editions of these books – however in some cases, publishers will collect these in later books.
DC’s comic book response to Wonder Woman 1984 isn’t limited to variant covers, as on September 20 Walmart will debut a companion comic anthology for the movie, titled Wonder Woman 1984 #1. That comic will be made available on digital platforms and to comic book stores on September 29.
Wonder Woman 1984 #1’s first story is described as a direct tie-in to the film, co-written by its associate producer Anna Obropta and comic book veteran Louise Simonson, with art by Bret Blevins.
“When a failed burglary attempt causes a hostage situation at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Diana Prince is forced to leave her teenage tour group behind so that Wonder Woman can save the day!” reads DC’s official description. “But will she be able to bring 10 gunmen to justice and get back to her tour group in time?”
A second story is an ’80s flashback by writer Steve Pugh and artist Marguerite Sauvage.
“In the ’80s, ‘greed is good, especially if you have it all!” reads DC’s description. “A reckless mastermind has made the ultimate power move by stealing Wonder Woman’s golden Lasso of Truth, and it’s up to Diana and Steve Trevor to get it back before the worst happens!”
