Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer has explained why Mark Wahlberg’s Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan doesn’t have his iconic moustache for the majority of the movie’s runtime.

Spoilers for the Uncharted movie follow.

Wahlberg’s mentor figure is known for two things to PlayStation gamers: loud shirts and his prickly moustache. Both were absent from the main movie. In the second of two Uncharted post-credits scenes, however, he delivered on both of those.

Why did we have to wait so long? For Fleischer, it was all about charting new territory away from Naughty Dog’s video game series.

“This movie is about the evolution of these characters,” Fleischer tells GamesRadar+. “We wanted to tell a different chapter of the story of Nate and Sully than that which fans are familiar with in the games.”

Fleischer continues, “That allowed us some license to show their progress, from Nate going from being an unassuming bartender to becoming a globetrotting treasure hunter and similar with Sully. We didn’t want him to start off in the exact same places where he ends up later in the video games. So certain liberties, we thought we would be allowed to take – for example, not having his iconic moustache until the end of the film – felt like, ‘Oh, we’re graduating to that later version of Sully.'”

That moment also highlighted leads Wahlberg and Tom Holland’s talent for working on the fly. The “You’ll hit puberty one day” line from Sully about Nate’s reaction to the moustache was actually improvised by Mark Wahlberg during filming.

“These guys make it their own and just add so much flavor to everything they do,” Fleischer adds.

The Uncharted movie obviously took a lot of inspiration from the source material, but star Tom Holland has revealed there are even some moves taken directly from the games.

In a group interview (opens in new tab) with Holland, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash, and Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer, Holland described filming fight scenes that are true to the Uncharted name and don’t look awkward in live-action.

“There are moves in the film which are stolen straight from the game,” Holland revealed as he demonstrated one such move. “There’s stuff like that that we stole, but the balance of trying to make it look really cool while also being believable was tricky, and there’s some creative freedom that we took.”

It feels surreal to finally say this, but the Uncharted movie is about to premiere. What began in 2008 (yes, two-thousand-freakin’-eight) as an adaptation of the first game in the franchise is now a prequel to the series starring Holland as a young Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Sully, Nate’s friend and right-hand man. It’ll premiere in theaters on Friday, February 18 and hit Netflix sometime in the unspecified future.

Our 3/5-star review of the Uncharted movie found a lot to love in Holland’s portrayal of the iconic treasure hunter, but ultimately saw room for improvement in a potential sequel. “After being stuck in development for more than a decade, long-awaited videogame adap Uncharted finally hits the big screen,” reads a portion of the review. “Director Ruben Fleischer (Venom, the Zombieland movies) delivers a fun, globe-trotting quest, one that unashamedly draws inspiration from a name-checked Indiana Jones while never quite managing to capture the same spirit of his adventures.”

For what to watch from the comfort of home, here are the best Netflix movies available now.

Uncharted movie star Tom Holland has admitted that, while he hasn’t seen the finished movie yet, he’s a tad troubled about his portrayal of one of gaming’s biggest icons, Nathan Drake.

In a frank interview, Holland acknowledged that “there are elements of my performance in Uncharted where I kind of fell under that spell of being ‘I want to look good now’ rather than ‘playing a character'”.

“As soon as you start worrying about ‘Do I look good in this shot?’ acting becomes something other than playing a character,” Holland told GQ. “I think there are elements of my performance in Uncharted where I kind of fell under that spell of being ‘I want to look good now. I want this to be my cool moment’.

“I had to play this very tough, very stoic guy – basically be Mark Wahlberg. My character is supposed to be a fucking action hero in this moment! Look, I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know if I succeeded in that. But it was an important lesson learned, because, at times, it was less about land a mark and go through this scene and more about land a mark, stand like this and see my bulging biceps… It was a mistake and is something that I will probably never do again.”

The long-awaited action-adventure film will serve as a backstory for Nathan Drake, the protagonist of the video games (opens in new tab) of the same name. Tom Holland stars as fortune hunter Nathan Drake (opens in new tab), while Mark Wahlberg is Victor “Sully” Sullivan (opens in new tab), Nathan’s future mentor. The supporting cast includes Antonio Banderas, Grey’s Anatomy’s Sophia Taylor Ali, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Tati Gabrielle. It wrapped filming in October (opens in new tab)

The perpetually unlucky Uncharted movie was delayed due to the spread of coronavirus last year, with executives halting pre-production – originally “for at least six weeks (opens in new tab)” – because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Venom (opens in new tab)‘s Ruben Fleischer was the seventh (and thankfully final) director tied to the film, which is due to hit the big screen in 2022.

Holland openly praised the Uncharted movie script (opens in new tab), calling it “one of the best scripts [he’s] ever read.” It was written by Hollywood duo Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who wrote Iron Man, Transformers: The Last Knight, and Men In Black: International together. While we wait for the Uncharted movie to arrive, here’s our roundup of all the upcoming video game movies (opens in new tab).

Seventh time’s the charm for the Uncharted movie, as it’s finally set to start filming in four weeks’ time. The movie has been beset by false starts and reboots for more than a decade, with six previous directors abandoning the project.

Tom Holland, who will portray protagonist Nathan Drake, made the announcement while speaking to IGN (opens in new tab), saying: “We start shooting in like four weeks. Mark Wahlberg is going to be amazing as Sully, the stunt department that we have out there in Berlin have done an amazing job already prepping the stunts, and it’s gonna be an exciting one.”

In terms of official announcements, there’s still no-one attached to direct the Uncharted movie. However, reports circulated last month indicate that Venom director Ruben Fleischer was Sony’s top contender (opens in new tab) for the job.

It’s no surprise that the studio hasn’t rushed to confirm the role after 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trechtenberg (opens in new tab), then Bumblebee director Travis Knight (opens in new tab) departed the project within four months of each other. It’s still possible that there will be further delays, but with the actors’ schedules set and stunt work begun, any further schedule changes are much less likely.

All we know for sure about the movie is that Holland will play a young Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg will play his charming treasure hunting mentor, Victor Sullivan. Holland revealed that “lots of inspiration for the film” came from Uncharted 4 (opens in new tab) in particular, which is one of his personal favorite games.

“There’s definitely a lot of inspiration that’s come from the games, but it’s a very young, fresh take on the character, because obviously we didn’t get to meet him all that much when he was younger,” Holland added. “But it’s a pretty awesome movie, and it’s global, we travel the world. We see some amazing places. And Mark Wahlberg and I are gonna have a great summer together.”

See what else to look forward to in our guide to the most exciting upcoming movies (opens in new tab) of 2020 and beyond.

Uncharted has lost yet another director. The long-troubled project has been dropping directors like Nate Drake runs down scores of baddies, and Bumblebee director Travis Knight is the latest to leave the scene.

Knight is leaving the Uncharted movie due to leading man Tom Holland’s conflicting filming schedule on Spider-Man. The third Spider-Man film to star Holland is slated to begin production in the summer of 2020.

According to sources at Deadline (opens in new tab), Holland is still set to portray series protagonist Nathan Drake under a different director. Likewise, the project is not expected to meet its previously reported December 2020 release date.

It isn’t clear who will helm the project next, but the new director will be the seventh to take on the task. The most recent Uncharted directors to come and go include Stranger Things’ Shawn Levy and 10 Cloverfield Lane’s Dan Trachtenberg (opens in new tab), with Knight taking over directorial duties from Trachtenberg in September.

Sony’s Uncharted movie has been in the works since 2008, long enough for Mark Wahlberg to change roles from Nathan Drake to the considerably older Victor Sullivan. As it stands, Wahlberg is set to star alongside Tom Holland in a story taking place some time before the events of the first game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

At this point, it’s safe to take any developments in the plot and casting of Uncharted with a grain of salt, considering the times it’s been rewritten and fallen through different hands. Though, Holland and Wahlberg as the starring duo seems like a winning formula, so hopefully the next director will be the one to take the seemingly cursed project through the finish line.

While we aren’t likely to see Uncharted release in 2020, here are the most exciting movies coming next year (opens in new tab) and beyond.
