Earlier today, Saber Interactive, announced its A Quiet Place, “a new single-player, story-driven horror adventure game” based on the Paramount films horror movies. In those films, humanity is under threat from monsters with excellent hearing, capable of picking out the faintest noise from their prey. The first film was an excruciatingly tense thriller, and was followed up by a sequel in 2021.

The project is being developed by iLLOGIKA, which has previously offered support to the likes of Cuphead and Spiritfarer, as well as developing a number of its own games, and is being published by Saber Interactive, whose horror chops include being the developers of World War Z and the upcoming Evil Dead game, alongside a number of high-profile porting projects including The Witcher 3 on Switch.

Details on the project are pretty scarce, but A Quiet Place game could adapt the formula of the excellent Alien: Isolation. Frontier’s version of the Xenomorph hunted the player in a way not dissimilar to the film’s creatures – ensuring you’re as quiet as possible before springing the trap on an otherwise difficult to kill monster could make for an excellent thriller experience. 

We shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out how the game will play, as it’s slated for a 2022 release date, and a press release confirmed that more information about the project is “expected to be unveiled later this year.” Just remember not to make too much sound if you’re excited about it…

With the classic show set to get a second life later this year on E4, fans have been desperate to find out who will be the new face in the robot helmet that once belonged to astronomer Sir. Patrick Moore. Now we know it’s another beloved British broadcaster, the iconic newsreader and journalist who will be setting and presiding over tricky gaming challenges contestants will be taking part in on GamesMaster. 

McDonald said in a statement: “I am delighted to be taking on this iconic role for a new generation of viewers.” 

He’ll be joined in three, 60-minute episodes that are set to air later this year by GamesMaster hosts Frankie Ward, Rab Florence, and Ty Logan. 

Speaking at the time of their announcement, Ward said: “I couldn’t be more excited to be part of the GamesMaster team, especially as the one thing I love almost as much as playing games is watching other people play them – and believe me when I say I take the art of celebrating their triumphs and failures very seriously indeed.”

The original GamesMaster became a British institution when it originally ran from January 1992 to February 1998, which saw contestants fight for their chance to earn Golden Joysticks under the ever-watchful eye of the GamesMaster. While we wait patiently for a look at what this new series might bring, we’re buzzing to see how Sir. Trevor McDonald keeps the budding Golden Joystick-winners in check.

The nominees for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced. Game Of Thrones reigns with 19 nominations and American Horror Story: Coven trails just behind with 17. By comparison Breaking Bad picked up 16.

Game Of Thrones garnered mentions in the Outstanding Drama Series and Supporting Actress/Actor in a Drama Series for Lena Headey and Peter Dinklage.

American Horror Story ’s scare tactics are clearly paying off too. The show secured a nomination for Best Miniseries or Movie with Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson picking up Best Actress, Miniseries or Movie nods. Similarly three Coven supporting actresses received a mention in the Supporting Actress, Miniseries or Movie list.

The biggest shock is that Orphan Black ’s Tatiana Maslany hasn’t picked up a single nomination for her outstanding performance(s) in the clone drama. The show failed to pick up any nominations too, despite receiving widespread critical acclaim.

There’s other good news for sci-fi, however. Futurama received a nod for its final season in the Outstanding Animation Programme category, alongside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Manhattan Project . See the list of major category nominations below.

Jamie Mathieson is no stranger to high concept sci-fi. As well as penning several episodes of Being Human and an episode of Dirk Gently , he’s the man responsible for the 2009 comedy mindbender Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel . Next month he’s returning to TV with ALT , an E4 pilot about two former BFFs (played by Game Of Thrones ‘ Gethin Anthony and Being Human ‘s Craig Roberts) who find themselves stranded in a parallel world.

“Danny and Milo were best friends for most of their lives, but Milo is the black hole of the story that drags everyone down,” says Mathieson. “He’s a manipulative, blithe stoner, who hasn’t got much ambition and lives with his gran. At the same time Danny feels sorry for Milo and he hasn’t quite broken free of Milo’s influence. That’s where the story begins with Milo saying, ‘You’ve got to come round, we’ve got a problem.’”

Milo’s “problem” is a mysterious bracelet which flings the pair into a parallel universe where another Danny is living his life badly and Suzy (Danny’s girlfriend) no longer recognises him. “Danny’s quest is to get back to the parallel that contains the love of his life,” says Mathieson. “Milo’s not that invested in getting back to the original parallel because as far as he’s concerned Suzy ruined the friendship between him and Danny, which is quite a nice tension to have.”

As well as being stranded in a strange world there’s the small matter of two sword-wielding assassins who want Danny and Milo dead, played by Jason Flemyng and Arsher Ali.

“The assassins want to kill Danny and Milo for reasons which aren’t clear. And not just that, they want to kill every version of Danny and Milo,” Mathieson explains. “These assassins may pop up at any moment so there’s a background arc which is Danny and Milo warning other versions of themselves.”

Yep, in a few days time there’s going to be a TV show based on the movie by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series , the first original scripted show produced for Rodriguez’s just-launched El Rey TV network, will launch in the US on Tuesday 11 March.

Executive producer and showrunner Carlos Coto (of TV’s Nikita ) tells the new issue of SFX : “The show is about, in a lot of ways, one brother trying to save another brother … There’s [another] character who plays a major role, Santanico Pandemonium – the Salma Hayek character – played by Eiza González. She’s much more of a major character in the series, not in the beginning but eventually.”

Other familiar faces appearing in season one include Don Johnson (as Earl McGraw), nearly-Wonder Woman Adrianne Palicki, and Robert Patrick.

Rodriguez will direct four or five episodes himself, while Blair Witch Project co-director Eduardo Sanchez will helm one. The Walking Dead ‘s Greg Nicotero oversees make-up effects as he did on the original film.

Jed Whedon, who wrote the songs for the project, has stated: “We know we have spoken publicly about a sequel in the near distance and our passion to create it, and I promise we have not been insincere … We have many songs written and the plot outlined, but needless to say, we’ve been busy. Joss has had a hectic couple of years and is in the middle of the busiest year of his life, as is Zack and as are we. Also the actors have other things they’re acting in, I think. So the future is uncertain, our passion remains. DH2 will exist, in some format or another, at some point in the future.”

Set around the time of the Napoleonic Wars, it imagines a world where magic once existed, disappeared and has returned to England with the titular Norrell and Strange.

Joining Marsan and Carvel in the seven-part adaptation are Alice Englert (the best thing in Beautiful Creatures ), Marc Warren ( Doctor Who ’s “Love And Monsters”), Samuel West ( Eternal Law, Van Helsing ), Charlotte Riley ( Wuthering Heights , Easy Virtue ), Enzo Cilenti ( Guardians Of The Galaxy, Kick-Ass 2 ) and Paul Kaye ( Game of Thrones, Being Human ).

The series has been adapted by Peter Harness ( Case Histories , Wallander ) and will be directed by Toby Haynes ( Doctor Who , Sherlock ) when filming begins next week in Yorkshire, Canada and Croatia.

Eddie Marsan says: “I can’t wait to start playing Norrell in this terrific adaptation of Susanna Clarke’s novel, and to be working with such a cast of actors, many of whom I’ve admired for so long.”

Bertie Carvel says: “I read the book some years ago and was totally enchanted. I’ve been casting spells for the part of Strange ever since. It is a considerable surprise to find that some of them worked!”

Jeph Loeb (famous for Smallville and Heroes , now writing and producing for the Marvel spin-off show) says, “I was working on Ultimate Spider-Man , our animated series. Clark Gregg had been on that show for two years. At that time, he leaned over and said to me, ‘Hey, Coulson lives after The Avengers movie in a television series?’ I said, ‘He could but people don’t know you are dead yet, so let’s see how that plays.’ Then [ Avengers ] became the third largest movie of all time and Coulson became one of the most beloved characters. Then I sat with Joss and talked about it and here we are today. This to me is unbelievable.”

It will apparently tell a brand-new story and feature a new cast of characters, although also be based on Kirkman’s long-running comic. It’s expected to launch in 2015.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” AMC president Charlie Collier said. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Kirkman said: “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe.”

Author Simon Clark has given SFX more details of a Doctor Who story he was commissioned to write a decade ago.

Back in July 2003, the news broke that finally, the BBC were making new Doctor Who , with the casting of an official Ninth Doctor announced… no, not Christopher Eccleston, but Richard E Grant.

Created to celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary, “Scream Of The Shalka” (which is getting a DVD release on 16 September) was a Flash animation (six episodes, each of 15 minutes), hosted on the Beeb’s Doctor Who website. By the time the first instalment went live in November, it had been rather undercut by the announcement, in September, of the series’ imminent return to our TV screens.

Further animations were being planned, and since it took a while for the producers of the television version to put the kibosh on all that, for a while work continued on a second story: “Blood Of The Robots”, another six-parter, written by horror novelist Simon Clark. It was a dream job for the author, who’s a life-long fan of the series.

“ Doctor Who has been the video track of my life,” Clarke explains. “I was five when the first episode aired and I’ve seen every episode since. Somewhere emblazoned on my neurons must be memories of all those mythic lost episodes. When I was five or six I wrote to the BBC asking them to send me a Dalek. They didn’t, but they did send me a signed photograph of Bill Hartnell, which I still have on my shelf beside me.”

Clark suspects that he was approached back in 2003 because around that time he was writing The Dalek Factor , a Doctor Who novella for Telos Publishing.

“Perhaps the producers got wind of this. I was told about the animated Doctor Who , and asked to submit a very brief outline. They liked what they saw and I was then asked to submit a more detailed synopsis. On the basis of this I was given a contract to write the scripts.”

The synopsis Clark used in his first script gives a good flavour of what the finished story would have been like:

“A blend of adventure, drama and humour. The Doctor arrives to find a world full of intelligent, sensitive robots that have been abandoned by their human owners, who are too squeamish to ‘kill’ them when they’re obsolete. Now ruthless salvage squads are hunting the robots in order to make room for human settlers forced to migrate from their dangerously over-crowded home planet.”

“There would have been some frightening elements, and a dash of gruesomeness too,” the writer explains. “I’d planned shocks for the viewer, too, as it struck me that, back then, people watching a drama on a computer would mean they were sitting much closer to the screen than a TV, so there could be exciting ways of creating a much more intense impact.”

“There was also scope to have things happen in the animated Doctor Who that couldn’t have been done in the classic TV episodes. For example, one of the robots dumped on the scrapyard planet was a Funeralbot. He’d been junked because his pneumatics were at fault and instead of gently lowering the coffin into the grave it always ended up flipping the coffin high into the air and out of the cemetery. My little homage to Robot Wars !”

Clark knew which actors had been cast in the lead roles, and was particularly excited to be writing for Derek Jacobi, who in “Scream Of The Shalka” played a version of the Master whose consciousness now resides in a robot body, confined to the TARDIS.

“I’ve been in awe of Jacobi since I saw him in I, Claudius ,” Clark says. “He has such a wonderful melodic voice. Right from the start, I thought of having the Master talking about his favourite tipples, just so I could have the great actor voicing the words Merlot, Amontillado and so on in such a resonant way.”

Clark’s work was quite advanced by the time the axe finally fell.

“The entire storyline was complete, and I’d written three scripts and started on the fourth when I got the call that sent my heart dropping like a stone.”

So, is there any chance of the story emerging in some other form some day?

“I don’t know,” says Clark. “I guess that isn’t in my hands, but the detailed storyline and three scripts are complete. It would just be a case of blowing away an accumulation of interstellar dust and work could begin on completing ‘Blood Of The Robots.’”
