A new poster has arrived online for Transformers: Age Of Extinction , in which Mark Wahlberg can be seen packing some serious firepower.

The new poster shows Wahlberg clutching what seems to be some sort of sword / gun hybrid, that looks almost as long as our hero is tall.

The tagline reads “the rules have changed”, which seems apt, as this is the Transformers film that is finally set to introduce the Dinobots.

Plot details are pretty sketchy at this point, but from the look on Wahlberg’s face, he’s going to be wielding that sword / gun in the face of some serious mayhem…

Not only that but we have our first proper look at Jack Reynor’s character Shane, too.

Directed by Michael Bay and co-starring Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor and Kelsey Grammar, Transformers: Age Of Extinction will open in the UK on 10 July 2014.

Michael Bay has responded angrily to reports that he had “apologised” for elements of the Transformers films, and has clarified his comments on the visual style of the new film.

“No I did not ‘apologise’ for any of the Transformers movies,” says Bay on his official blog. “I did not say I shot the last three movies ‘less cool’ than the new fourth instalment.”

“I was talking specifically about camera style and tone, of the first movie compared to how I shot the new instalment with a very big scale, cinematic style.”

“I was very specific in saying the first Transformers was shot in a ‘generic suburbia’ area, not trying to be cool with any cinematic flashes. I wanted it to feel like this could happen in any backyard in the United States.”

That’s that cleared up then. Meanwhile, filming has wrapped on Transformers: Age Of Extinction , with the first footage likely to premiere at the Super Bowl.

“My cast was absolutely fantastic,” continues Bay, “and a very fun group to work with. We are working hard cutting the movie right now. I think the first piece comes out for the Super Bowl and a teaser right after that.”

Transformers: Age Of Extinction will open in the UK on 10 July 2014.

While official shots from the set of Transformers 4 have so far focussed mainly on the fourquel’s automobiles, a new photo finally introduces a couple of humans – including Mark Wahlberg’s satchel-wearing hero.

The above photo was released over the weekend, and shows director Michael Bay out-posing Wahlberg in front of a strange new monolith.

What is said monolith? Could it be the franchise’s new MacGuffin, taking over from the Allspark – the energy cube that was so pivotal to the first Transformers flick?

Or could this be one part of Fortress Maximus, the giant Transformer who’s yet to take a bow on the big screen?

Obviously it’s impossible to tell this early. After all, this could also just be Bay taking us all for a ride with a shot of some fancy set dressing…

Michael Bay has been discussing what we can expect from Transformers 4 , the first installment of a whole new trilogy, and, surprisingly, downscaling seems to be top of his agenda.

“We’re going to start off smaller,” explains Bay. “There’s a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise we’ve redesigned everything from top to bottom. The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting a new cast.

“Mark [ Wahlberg ] is really excited about it and it’s a great redesign,” continues the director. “I said that 3 was going to be my last one. Paramount was letting me do Pain & Gain and the Transformers ride was opening at Universal and it was bittersweet to think of passing it off. I wanted to set it up on a really sure footing and to bring someone else in on that, it would have been overwhelming.”

And while he’s not giving anything away in terms of plot, it’s clear that something fairly seismic has taken place in those four intervening years.

“We keep the Transformers the way they were, it’s just four years later,” he says. “There’s a reason the Transformers are redesigned. We’re trying to broaden the franchise and give it more places to go.”

Transformers 4 opens in the UK on 27 June 2014.
