Warning: Spoilers ahead for Thor: Love and Thunder! Turn back now if you haven’t seen the movie!

Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie in Thor: Love and Thunder, has revealed that she fought to keep one scene in particular in the final cut. In the movie, Luke Hemsworth and Matt Damon play members of a theatre troupe who put on shows in New Asgard about the events of previous Thor movies – both return from Thor: Ragnarok

At one point, the actors approach Valkyrie after Gorr the God Butcher attacks New Asgard to ask about putting on another play covering the villain’s rampage, and that moment almost ended up cut from the film. “I loved it! These movies go through so many different edits, so things stay and go away. And typically, I just watch these movies at the premiere, but this time around, I actually watched a couple of the cuts because I found that process really interesting. I’m now producing more, so I really wanted to understand how the “sausage” is made,” Thompson told The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab).

“And so there was one cut where that bit went away and I was so sad, but then it came back and I was so happy. (Laughs.) I was like, “That has to be in the movie!” So I was very sad for a brief second when it wasn’t there, but yeah, that was so fun,” she continued. “Having them around to explore the importance of theater and storytelling, as expressed in Asgardian culture, I just loved that.”

While that scene eventually made it back into the movie, Natalie Portman, who plays Jane Foster – AKA the Mighty Thor – has revealed that a lot ended up on the cutting room floor. “There were whole sequences, planets, characters, and worlds that didn’t end up in the movie that were hilarious and amazing and [that] we spent a lot of time and energy on, and certainly the entire crew also designing and conceiving,” she commented.

At the moment, there are no confirmed plans for Thor’s return, but judging by the Love and Thunder post-credits scenes and that surprise cameo, we can probably expect a Thor 5 that covers those particular plot developments. Until then, you can catch up on the MCU on Disney Plus, and for much more on the movie, you can check out our spoilery guides on:

Taika Waititi has packed in loads of Thor: Love and Thunder Easter eggs and Marvel references in his latest movie. This includes plenty of nods to the wider MCU in almost every frame of Thor 4, as well as some other cinema references too. Everything from Marvel’s Eternals to the Tom Cruise classic Cocktail is there. And, of course, there are some hints to where Marvel Phase 4 is going next as well.

To aid you in spotting these, we’ve compiled a list of all the biggest moments we noticed in the new movie. However, as you might expect, we’ll be getting into heavy spoiler territory below. So make sure you’ve seen Thor 4 before reading our guide. Everyone else, read on for our breakdown of all of the Thor: Love and Thunder Easter eggs and references you need to know about.

Thor 4 Easter Eggs

Thor’s t-shirt with the Yggdrasil on it

Thor shirt

During his opening scene with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor can be seen wearing a shirt with Yggdrasil on it. This is the World Tree in Norse mythology, which holds up the Nine Realms, including Asgard, Jotunheim, and Niflheim. This doesn’t play into the plot of the movie but is a nice nod to Thor’s comic book and Old Norse history.

Thor’s goats: Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder,

Thor goats

After Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy help save a planet at the beginning of Thor: Love and Thunder, the God of Thunder receives a gift for his efforts. He is given two screaming goats, who fans of the comics will know are Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder. These are Thor’s trusty mystical goats who pull his chariot. In Thor: Love and Thunder, they get the slightly less glamorous job of pulling a tourist Viking ship.

Thor’s handshake with Star-Lord

Thor: Love and Thunder

When Thor and Star-Lord are parting ways to head on their own missions, Thor wants to do a special handshake with the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. This starts as a “human handshake, to the Asgardian handshake, into the snake that you cannot trust, and finish with a classic Asgardian high one.” While we never saw Loki and Thor do this handshake themselves, the reference to the “snake” could be a nod to the God of Mischief. As you may remember, in Thor: Ragnarok, Thor told a story about a time when they were children when Loki turned into a snake. Then when Thor went to pick the snake up, Loki returned to normal form and stabbed him – hence a “snake you cannot trust”.

References to Event Horizon and Interstellar

Interstellar

(Image credit: Warner Bros. / Paramount)

When Dr. Jane Foster is in the hospital receiving her chemotherapy treatment, she winds up sitting next to a young man reading her book. She takes the opportunity to explain to him how the Einstein–Rosen bridge – or wormholes as they’re also known – works. Jane says it’s just like in Event Horizon and Interstellar. At the beginning of Event Horizon, Dr. Weir explains how wormholes work by taking a poster, folding it in half, and poking a pen through it. In Interstellar, Dr. Romilly does something very similar, folding over a piece of paper and poking a hole through it. In Thor: Love and Thunder, Jane does the exact same thing by tearing out a page of her own book, calling back to both of these moments.

New Asgard ice cream shop called Infinity Conez

Thanos

In Thor: Love and Thunder, New Asgard has been transformed into a tourist destination for Avengers fans. The town is full of nods to Marvel, including an ice cream shop called Infinity Conez. The shop’s sign features an Infinity Gauntlet holding an ice cream cone, complete with six candles representing the six Infinity Stones. Waititi gave Entertainment Tonight (opens in new tab) a look at this on the set, joking: “As you can see here, a little special invention just for the film, which I have heard on quite good know-how that it’s going to make it into real-life one day, is this ice cream shop here called ‘Infinity Conez.’ So keep an eye out for that.”

Falligar the Behemoth

A dead god in Thor: Love and Thunder

When Lady Sif calls on Thor for aid in Gorr the God Butcher’s attacks, he finds her next to Falligar the Behemoth. The huge hyena-looking creature has been felled by Gorr who’s on a mission with his Necrosword to kill all Gods. Falligar is the Patron God of the Galactic Frontier and champion of the Tournament of Immortals, as well as being a friend of Thor’s. This shot of him lying dead is taken directly from the Thor: God of Thunder #3 comic, which was published in December 2012.

Nick Fury is under ‘Nick Furry’ on Thor’s phone

During the flashback to Thor and Jane’s relationship, we learn they broke up because they were both so busy with work. During the montage, Jane is constantly being called away while Thor has to disappear and save the world. At one point, he receives a call from Nick Fury on his mobile, but eagle-eyed viewers will notice he has cheekily renamed him Nick Furry.

Thor’s Loki tattoo

Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Love and Thunder

Now we know that Loki doesn’t appear in Thor: Love and Thunder. However, there is a major reference to Thor’s brother in the Omnipotence City scene in the movie. Thor is wearing a disguise when he goes to meet Zeus, which the leader of the Gods “flicks” off, revealing he isn’t wearing anything underneath. On his back, there’s a clear tribute to Loki, who died at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. This features Loki’s helmet and a broken heart alongside the words: “R.I.P. Loki”. Of course, an alternate version of Loki is alive in the MCU. This is the Loki who seized an opportunity with the Tesseract to disappear after the main characters went back in time in Avengers: Endgame. However, he’s a bit busy with the Time Variance Authority – which you can read all about in our Loki season 2 guide. Another part of the tattoo also features a scroll with the names of characters who have died in it. Among the list are: Loki, Mother, Father, Heimdall, Tony, and Natasha.

Cameos

Roy Kent in Ted Lasso

There are loads of cameos peppered throughout Thor: Love and Thunder. Matt Damon, Luke Hemsworth, and Sam Neill are back as the Asgardian thesps. Kat Dennings returns as Jane’s friend Darcy, as too does Stellan Skarsgard’s Erik Selvig. Daryl from Team Thor even shows up as an Asgardian tour guide.

Shakespearean actor Simon Russell Beale makes a cameo as one of the Gods in Omnipotence City, which is overseen by Russell Crowe cameoing as Zeus. As well as this, Chris Hemsworth’s, Taika Waititi’s, Natalie Portman’s, and Christian Bale’s kids all also have roles in the movie, with India Rose Hemsworth playing a central character. However, it’s in the post-credits scene that we get the biggest cameo when a new character is introduced to the MCU. Brett Goldstein appears as Hercules. His character has a long history with Thor in the comics, and it seems he may even be a potential adversary to the God of Thunder in the future as well. For more, check out our guide to all the Thor: Love and Thunder cameos and to Hercules in Thor: Love and Thunder.

The statues at Eternity

Uatu the Watcher from What If... ?

The final battle between Thor and Gorr the God Butcher takes place at the gate to Eternity. However, if you look in the background of this scene, you can see multiple statues lining the walls. Among them appears to be Uatu The Watcher, who played a big role in the Disney Plus What If? series. He is an observer of the multiverse and is voiced by Jeffrey Wright. This is seemingly his first appearance in live-action in the MCU. It’s not confirmed who the other statues are in this scene, but they appear to be The Living Tribunal, who is the personification of multiversal law, as well as Infinity and Death who are among the four cosmic entities who forged the Infinity Stones.

Celestials

Eternals

Two unnamed Celestials (the giant Eternal-creating deities) were briefly glimpsed during the scenes on Omnipotence City. As Thor and the team fly away, they are seen poking their heads into the building where Zeus was holding court.

Space dolphins

Thor: Love and Thunder

One of Thor: Love and Thunder’s strangest sights is also an Easter egg. Go figure. Thor points out the space dolphins, beings of supreme love who roam around in packs of six, as they head towards the Shadow Realm.

This is likely a reference to the run of Jason Aaron, the comic book writer who heavily influences the plot of Love and Thunder and introduced Gorr the God Butcher to the world. In his run, they attacked Thor (and an older Thor) during their final battle with Gorr.

Necrosword

Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher

Gorr’s Necrosword, the all-corrupting sword used to slay gods, was also the villain’s weapon of choice in the comics.

There, the Necrosword holds slightly different origins. Instead of being passed down from generation to generation at the dawn of time, it was created by evil symbiote god Knull to aid in his god-killing crusade. It eventually ends up in the hands of Gorr.

Thor: Love and Thunder likely doesn’t use this version of the Necrosword likely due to being tangled up in movie rights. If it’s a symbiote sword, there’s every chance it could only be used with permission of Sony or in a Sony/Marvel movie. The previous owner of the Necrosword was slain by Dionysus in the movie, but he’s not named.

Team Thor

Darryl in Team Thor

Thor: Love and Thunder features a cameo from the series of Marvel shorts that Waititi wrote and directed back in 2016. These were set between Captain America: Civil War and Thor: Ragnarok and featured Thor moving in with a new housemate called Darryl Jacobson (played by Daley Pearson). He makes a cameo in the latest MCU movie as a tour guide in New Asgard. While it’s not clear if he’s still playing Darryl in the scene, it’s a fun nod to the internet series.

Cocktail reference

Tom Cruise in Cocktail

There’s a reference to the 1988 Tom Cruise movie Cocktail. On the outside of the Viking boat that’s transporting Thor and the gang to Eternity, there is a neon sign reading “Cocktails and Dreams”. This is the name of the chain of bars Cruise’s character is hoping to open one day. Speaking to Uproxx (opens in new tab), Waititi acknowledged the reference before adding how he’d initially hoped to include it in his previous Thor movie. He said: “My big regret with Ragnarok was not doing Cocktail. Well, probably Jeff Goldblum’s big palace in Ragnarok? It should have been in there.”

Was Jane snapped?

Avengers: Endgame still

A small piece of dialogue between Thor and Jane addresses the fact she may have been among the victims of Thanos’ snap. When the pair meet again, they have a slight disagreement on how long they’ve been broken up. Jane suggests it was only three or four years, while Thor says it was “eight years, seven months, and six days, give or take”. The difference in time is likely due to the fact Jane was snapped out of existence by Thanos for five years. This was seemingly confirmed in the script for Avengers: Endgame (opens in new tab). In the notes on the scene, Jane’s name is among those listed as victims of the snap.

Potential link to Moon Knight

Moon Knight

Thor name-drops a number of Gods ahead of him, Valkyrie, Korg, and the Mighty Thor leaving for Omnipotence City. Among them is the Egyptian god Ra, who is a part of the Moon Knight comic books. He’s not in the Disney Plus series, but should Moon Knight season 2 happen, he could potentially play a role. Moon Knight’s writer Jeremy Slater also previously told The Direct (opens in new tab) that his script included a reference to Thor as well. He was going to include some dialogue about a rumor that “Gods were being killed” in a nod to Gorr the God Butcher.

While Thor: Love and Thunder will inevitably end up on Disney Plus, right now, Marvel’s latest is only in cinemas, with Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waititi back in the director’s chair. This time around, Chris Hemsworth’s long-haired hero faces off against Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale – as you can probably tell from the name, he’s not good news for Thor.

Franchise regulars King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Korg (Waititi), and Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) are also back for another round, along with plenty of new faces, too. If you’ve already seen the movie, you might be itching for an at-home re-watch. But when will the Marvel movie be available to stream on Disney Plus, the home of the rest of the MCU?

When is Thor: Love and Thunder releasing on Disney Plus?

While we don’t have an official Thor: Love and Thunder streaming release date just yet, we’ve done our best to estimate when it might arrive on Disney Plus. To use some recent Marvel movies as examples, Eternals arrived on the streamer 70 days after its theatrical release, while Black Widow dropped 90 days after arriving in cinemas (though the movie was simultaneously available on Disney Plus but for a $30/£20 additional fee). However, Disney’s most recent theatrical release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, arrived on Disney Plus only 48 days after it first arrived on the big screen.

That leaves us with a pretty big window, but it does narrow things down a bit. As Thor: Love and Thunder was released on July 7, 48 days after that takes us to August 24. At the other end of the window, 90 days from July 7 is October 5. Chances are, the movie will arrive on Disney Plus this September.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Thor: Love and Thunder! Turn back now if you haven’t seen the new Marvel movie!

Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher wreaks havoc on the MCU’s deities in Thor: Love and Thunder, wielding his sinister Necrosword to take revenge against all gods after the death of his daughter. Director Taika Waititi hyped the bad guy up before the film arrived, teasing he tested the best of any Marvel villain in test screenings – and with the movie finally here, fans finally get to see the god-slayer in action.

“Thor: Love and Thunder was fun and I enjoyed it overall,” says one person (opens in new tab). “The biggest highlight for me was Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher. He was mesmerizing. He’s got some really kickass and creepy scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed every second he was on screen.”

Another person (opens in new tab) thinks Gorr is a highlight: “Thor Love and Thunder was really good, a lot more emotional than I was expecting and Gorr is a really good villain, stole every scene he was in. Not as good as Ragnarok, but pretty close there.”

“Just when I thought I couldn’t be more amazed with how incredible Christian Bale is, he absolutely nails it as Gorr The God Butcher in Thor: Love & Thunder. He’s the GOAT, people,” says another fan (opens in new tab)

One person (opens in new tab) is lukewarm on the movie, but has high praise for Gorr. “Thor: Love and Thunder was not bad. Typical marvel movie, fun but nothing groundbreaking. Marvel is falling off pretty hard with the new phase but Gorr was amazing! He was creepy and well written and portrayed. Best MCU villain since Thanos”

Another fan (opens in new tab) liked the villain, but wished he had more screen time: “I had a lot fun watching this, the comedy and emotion are well-balanced. I love the chemistry between the characters, especially Thor and Jane. Gorr is terrifying and menacing, but I wish we could have seen him more throughout the movie.”

One person on Reddit (opens in new tab) feels similarly: “Christian Bale was great but feels so underutilized. For a God butcher, there wasn’t much butchering.”

“Christian Bale deserved way better screen time. He was absolutely brilliant as Gorr but his character was wasted in Love And Thunder man wtf,” thinks another person (opens in new tab)

“Gorr was the only thing I really liked about Thor Love and Thunder… he needed WAYYY more screen time!” agrees one Twitter user (opens in new tab).

There’s no word yet on if the God of Thunder will be returning for a potential Thor 5, but considering Love and Thunder’s post-credits scenes, we can safely assume there’s more story to tell. The MCU currently continues on Disney Plus with Ms. Marvel, while the next Marvel movie to hit the big screen is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which lands this November 11. In the meantime, for much more on Love and Thunder, check out our explainers on:

Where does Thor: Love and Thunder fit on the Marvel timeline? It’s not an easy question to answer, because the exact timeframe of the movie is fairly vague. Still, there are some clues that help pinpoint when the movie might take place in the Marvel line-up.

The film sees the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, now the Mighty Thor, who teams up with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, and Taika Waititi’s Korg to go up against Christian Bale’s terrifying Gorr the God Butcher, who, as the name suggests, intends to kill all of the MCU’s gods.

The most recent Marvel releases, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ms. Marvel, are both set in the same year. So how does Thor: Love and Thunder fit into the chronology? We explain all below… and don’t worry, the following is completely spoiler free, so you can read on even if you haven’t had a chance to catch the movie just yet.

When does Thor: Love and Thunder take place on the Marvel timeline?

Director Taika Waititi previously indicated that the movie takes place four years after Avengers: Endgame, which places it in 2027 – for context, Doctor Strange 2 and Ms. Marvel both take place in 2025 (remember, MCU time is a bit ahead of our own due to the Blip). That seems a little too far ahead, then, and potentially a simple misstep from the director as the movie itself offers more clues.

For one thing, Thor says exactly how long it’s been since he and Jane last saw each other: eight years, seven months, and six days. We don’t know exactly when the God of Thunder and the astrophysicist parted ways, but the breakup is referenced in Thor: Ragnarok, which is set in 2017/2018.

Eight years on from then puts Love and Thunder at around 2026, which is just a little further on than Multiverse of Madness and Ms. Marvel. So, depending on when Thor and Jane actually called it quits, the movie could be set anytime from 2025 to 2027, though it’s probably safe to pin it between 2025-2026. Narrowing the window down any further is pretty much impossible, because the time of year isn’t very obvious in the movie and there aren’t any references to the events of other recent MCU films.

Things could become clearer once Guardians of the Galaxy 3 arrives, as those characters appear in Love and Thunder. Until then, though, we’ll have to stick with the broader timeframe of somewhere between 2025 and 2026.

Gorr actor Christian Bale has seemingly confirmed a pair of Marvel cameos were planned for Thor: Love and Thunder – but haven’t made the final cut.

While praising the cast in an interview with Prensa Escenario (opens in new tab), Bale let slip that he filmed scenes with none other than Peter Dinklage and Jeff Goldblum.

“I got to work with Peter Dinklage. That’s not in the final film but he’s fantastic,” he revealed. “I got to work with Jeff Goldblum, he’s not in the final film either. As you see, lots of stuff ends up on the cutting room floor, even though it was beautiful, brilliant stuff.”

Dinklage previously appeared as Eitri – the King of the Dwarves – in Avengers: Infinity War. Jeff Goldblum was part of Thor: Ragnarok as the Grandmaster. Neither had been confirmed to return, though Goldblum had previously addressed the possibility of a Grandmaster comeback in Love and Thunder during a wonderfully bizarre interview with Esquire (opens in new tab).

“Am I going to be in Love and Thunder? The truth is, and I can say it now because the trailer has come out, I appear in it,” Goldblum joked. “It’s my most challenging role to date, and I believe my highest accomplishment. I’m not seen, visually. You never see me. And you don’t hear me. Nor am I referred to, I believe, in any scene. I am sensed, only vibrationally.”

Thor: Love and Thunder, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Tessa Thompson, is set for release on July 7 in the UK and July 8 in the US. For more on the movie, be sure to check out Total Film’s exclusive coverage from its new issue, including how Natalie Portman prepared for her superhero role and Christian Bale’s horrified reaction to Googling Gorr.

Thor: Love and Thunder may be the titular god’s fourth solo film, but Chris Hemsworth isn’t ruling out another return. The only condition is: it has to be something new, as the actor explains in the latest issue of Total Film, which features Love and Thunder on the cover

“Each time, if the opportunity comes up and presents itself, I’m just open to whatever creative exploration can happen, thanks to different writers and directors and so on,” the actor says of his journey so far. “But I love playing the character, I really do. It always comes down to: ‘Is this script different to the last one? Are we repeating something?’ And when it becomes too familiar, I think that’s when I’d have to say, ‘Yeah, no, this doesn’t… I think I’ve…'” He pauses, laughs. “I’d like to exit before people tell me to exit.”

Hemsworth isn’t the only one who thinks another appearance could be on the cards. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is of the never say never opinion, too. “I know this: there are many, many other Thor stories in the comics that we talk about a lot,” he says. “And as we watch Chris Hemsworth continue to grow and evolve as a major acting talent, I would be excited to see how he keeps evolving this complex character.”

There’s certainly plenty about Love and Thunder that’s different to what’s come before. Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster is transformed into Mighty Thor, while Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is King of Asgard.

We don’t have long to wait to see the film, either. Thor: Love and Thunder opens in UK cinemas on July 7, before opening in the US on July 8. For much more from Hemsworth, Feige, Portman, Thompson, Christian Bale, and director Taika Waititi, check out the new issue of Total Film (opens in new tab) when it hits shelves (and digital newsstands) this Thursday, June 23.

Thor: Love and Thunder has scored a PG-13 rating – and one of the reasons might be a tad surprising.

Per FilmRatings.com (opens in new tab), the movie is rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, language, some suggestive material and partial nudity.”

From the trailer, we can assume the partial nudity is the moment Russell Crowe’s Zeus accidentally “flicks” off all of Thor’s clothes (which also reveals Thor has a strange tribute to his brother Loki tattooed on his back). As for the sci-fi violence, action, and language, that’s all standard Marvel fare.

The film sees the return of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, but this time she’s wielding Mjolnir as Mighty Thor. The first clip released from the movie shows her in action, with Thor apparently meeting her again for the first time since their break-up – and stunned to see her transformation into a hero.

Love and Thunder also features the Guardians of the Galaxy, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, and Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher – who is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s best villains yet. In fact, according to director Taika Waititi, Gorr has had the best reaction of any villain in test screenings.

“I’d say he’s the most sympathetic villain they’ve had,” Waititi commented. “He’s also tested the highest out of any villain that Marvel’s had.” From the trailers, Gorr certainly looks to be a sinister threat indeed, so Thor has his work cut out for him.

Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters this July 7. In the meantime, check out our ultimate guide to Marvel Phase 4 for everything else coming soon – and catch up on the MCU on Disney Plus

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has nothing but praise for Christian Bale’s god-killing villain in the upcoming Marvel sequel.

“In my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale,” Waititi told Associated Press (opens in new tab).

Given Marvel’s recent track record of iconic villains – Thanos, Loki, and Green Goblin might have something to say about that – it’s big talk indeed. Bale is set to play Gorr the God Butcher, a maniacal threat ripped from Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic’s legendary Thor comic book run, who makes it his life’s mission to hunt down and kill a pantheon of deities.

While Bale’s villain has been conspicuously absent from the first Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, recent merchandise leaks have filled in the gaps and presented a look at Gorr’s design. He’s a pallid, gray-skinned alien wearing a white cloak and possessing a pitch-black sword, potentially the Necrosword.

Marvel’s official synopsis has revealed that Thor will put together a new team to combat Gorr – including Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor – in “a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.”

Waititi also teased more of the group dynamics in Love and Thunder. He revealed: “It’s a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes, a new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie and The Mighty Thor.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is set for release in cinemas on July 8. For more on the MCU’s future plans, check out our comprehensive guide to Marvel Phase 4.

The first trailer and synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder show comic book writer Jason Aaron’s fingerprints all over the July film’s plot, from the main villain Gorr the God Butcher to Jane Foster taking up Mjolnir to become the Mighty Thor. But the just-released trailer also highlights the critical importance of artist Esad Ribic, Aaron’s creative partner on Thor: God of Thunder (opens in new tab), the first volume of his years-long run.

In fact, artist Ribic’s work has such a strong impact on the film, at least one shot shown in the trailer is taken almost directly from one of Ribic’s panels from Thor: God of Thunder.

What’s more, though we haven’t seen his official look for movies, Ribic is the co-creator of Gorr the God Butcher. He’s also the artist who designed Jane Foster’s costume as Thor as well as drawing her first appearance wielding Mjolnir in Thor: God of Thunder #25 (opens in new tab), before the secret identity of the new Thor was even revealed as Jane Foster.

After Ribic’s run on Thor: God of Thunder, artist Russell Dauterman took over as the main artist of Aaron’s 2014 launching volume of the simply titled Thor (opens in new tab), with Jane Foster in the title role, as well as the subsequent volume, Mighty Thor (opens in new tab), which concluded Jane’s story as Thor (though she’s picking Mjolnir back up in comics just in time for the release of Love and Thunder this summer). Dauterman put his own spin on Jane’s look as Thor, as well as redefining a sci-fi influenced, high fantasy look for Asgard and its inhabitants.

The influence of both Ribic and Dauterman’s art on Thor: Love and Thunder, down to the direct recreation of some of Ribic’s work on Thor: God of Thunder, highlights just how crucial the design and storytelling work by comic artists is to the process of creating superhero movies.

Jane Foster is just one of the heroes who are worthy of wielding Mjolnir.
