DualSense tricks and haptic feedback can start to feel overdone when every PS5 game under the sun is pushing them – stop me if you’ve ever seen a game use the triggers to mimic bowstring tension – but The Medium has really pulled out all the stops to pull off some cool-looking features. That said, the opener is a classic: as protagonist Marianna charges up a spirit blast, the triggers will reduce simulated tension.  

Thankfully, the rest of the trailer shows off less familiar ideas, some of which remind me of the DualSense magic in PS5 exclusive Returnal, which many regard as one of the best showcases for the tech. When you put up a spirit shield to block a storm of moths from getting to you, for instance, you’ll feel small, rapid pulses all over the controller as they collide with your shield. On the other palm, when you hold your breath while hiding, you’ll feel big pulses to indicate when Marianne will run out of breath. This is further amped up by a trick with the light bar which causes it to flicker in time with Marianne’s flashlight when monsters are near. 

It’s not just haptic feedback, either. You can use the DualSense touchpad to rotate objects as you inspect them for clues, and its built-in gyro sensor can be used to control the camera in first-person examinations (presumably in case the trusty right stick is MIA). And when you’re using tools to cut through environmental blockades, the small speaker right on the DualSense will give off sounds mimicking whatever tool you’re using, from bolt cutters to scalpels.

As spotted by Gematsu (opens in new tab), the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has been updated to reflect a rating (opens in new tab) for PS5 – an interesting development given the game is currently only available on Xbox Series X and PC. 

The sighting suggests that the console-exclusivity period may soon be drawing to a close, intimating the horror may have only been exclusive to Xbox and its associated subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, for six months. If true, that means the game may release on PlayStation as soon as next month – although we don’t yet have that confirmed, of course. 

In case you wondered, the ESRB describes The Medium as “an adventure horror game in which players assume the role of a medium investigating an abandoned communist resort in Poland”. It relays “instances of violence”, “large bloodstains on the walls and floors”, and unsavory language, but otherwise has very little to say about the innovative horror.

The Medium was first revealed in May 2020, and after a slight delay from its initial December 2020 release window, it finally launched on January 28. Just a few days later, Bloober Team announced it had already recouped its development and marketing costs (opens in new tab).

In the GamesRadar+ The Medium review (opens in new tab), Leon gave the horror 2.5 out of 5, saying: “Gameplay and narrative are desperate for a streamlining edit that never came. There are flashes where you can see what this could have been: atmospheric moments of exploration, a couple of lovely detective-style puzzles, some really interesting insights into the traumatic post-communist 90s Poland setting. But it tries to do too much and what nice beats there are feel like luck struck through quantity rather than quality intent.”

The Medium tie clip location 

The Medium tie clip is in Jack’s room which is the left turn above, at the end of the corridor. When you get inside check the wall on the left to find a prompt that will let you examine a display of pins and medals. 

While the wall of framed badges and pins are hard to miss it is easy to miss the smaller prompt below, on the shelf by the clock. This is the box where The Medium tie clip should be, but isn’t. If you open you’ll find it empty but as long as you actually notice it and interact with it you’ll be okay – this triggers the tutorial for Insight, your spiritual instinct mode which will reveal Jack’s tie clip is under the clock. 

All you have to do now is interact with the clock to move it and you can grab The Medium tie clip and get out of the apartment to continue the game. While that’s the only thing you need to do to proceed, there are plenty of other things you can do in the flat  while you’re there, like check out Marianne’s room and feed the cat.

The anticipated horror game from Bloober Team will now launch on Microsoft’s next-gen consoles and PC early next year, on January 28, 2021. You can see the full announcement below from Bloober Team, in which the developer partly attributes the delay to the COVID-19 situation in Poland.

“The additional development time will allow us to add further polish, ensuring we deliver our innovative, genre-pushing vision of interactive psychological horror,” the statement reads. “Rest assured, the delay will not stop us sharing information with you, and you can expect us to unravel a few more layers of The Medium‘s great mystery soon.”

The Medium was originally set to launch on both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on December 10, 2020. From the sounds of the statement, it certainly seems like Bloober Team wanted to avoid going up against Cyberpunk 2077, which is now due to launch on the same day in December (recently, Path of Exile’s expansion was delayed to Cyberpunk 2077’s move to December).

Nonetheless, there’s still plenty to look forward to with Bloober Team’s new game when it does eventually launch. A reality-altering horror game set in Poland during the 1990s, you’ll adventure across multiple realities at once, at the same time. It’s a pretty ambitious design philosophy from Bloober Team, that’s for sure.
