An Elder Scrolls Online game on Twitter lets you choose your own adventure.

Bethesda Australia/New Zealand has posted an interactive game to its Twitter account which allows you to take part in a series of Elder Scrolls Online-inspired quests in the form of tweets.

The start of the quest line has you standing before Markarth, the City of Stone, before you choose your first step. Each quest will give you three options to choose in the Twitter thread, with each one resulting in a different path. Certain paths you select will result in your journey ending sooner than expected – running into a vampire, for example, will mean the end of the road – but you can always try again.

Before you stands Markarth, the City of Stone, with its bustling streets dotted by scenic waterfalls. You’re looking for adventure, which is never far away in the Reach. You overhear the words ‘Briar Rock Ruins’ & ‘danger’ in a nearby conversation. Perfect! Time to head out.⬇️ pic.twitter.com/YaKGRruoc9December 4, 2020

Another quest will find inside a cave with a man in armor who is struggling to open a small chest. You can choose to help him unlock the chest or carry on moving through the cave, but while one choice will allow you to carry on with your adventure, players intent on helping everyone they find in their RPGs could meet an untimely end.

The interactive quest line was posted for a chance of winning Elder Scrolls Online prize packs. Reaching the end of the story will allow you to enter the prize draw for a digital reward. The Elder Scrolls Online is also free for the week, ending December 9.

The game seems to also be in celebration of the release of The Elder Scrolls Online’s new Markarth DLC, which recently introduced new story quests. Markarth’s story centers around your character heading to the Reach with your allies to take on a vampire lord and their army.

Here’s our definitive list of the best MMORPG games you can play right now.

The Elder Scrolls Online is hosting a Halloween event where you can earn bonus XP, goody-filled Plunder Skull containers, and even turn your character into a member of the undead army.

The Witches Festival (opens in new tab) returns to The Elder Scrolls Online Thursday, October 22 and runs until Tuesday, November 3 at 7am PT / 10am ET / 3pm BST. But before you show up to the party, you need to find a costume.

If you haven’t already, complete The Witchmother’s Bargain quest from the Holiday section of the Crown Store to get the Witchmother’s Whistle memento. Use the whistle during the event period and unlock a two-hour 100% XP boost and receive the Witchmother’s Cauldron, and then use the Cauldron to put on your new zombie Halloween costume.

Now that you’re suited up, you’ll want to down as many bosses as possible, as in return you’ll get Plunder Skulls on top of the regular loot. Plunder Skulls have the chance to get you all sorts of in-season rewards like all-new pieces of the Throwing Bones memento, Hollowjack and Dremora style items, witch-themed recipes and furnishings, and more.

The first big bad you kill will drop Dremora Plunder Skulls, which includes something from normal Plunder Skulls on top of another reward that could include a Dremora Motif chapter, Witches Festival Writs you can complete to unlock a new Witch hat and Witch title, Glenmoril Treasure Maps and Armor Outfit Style pages, or the all-new Grave Dancer Weapon Style pages. Depending on the boss you take down, you’ll also earn one of two different Dremora Motif pages.

For the duration of the event, the first boss killed each day will drop three event tickets, which you can trade to the Impresario for items like the all-new grab bags. Open up a grab bag and you’ll find treats you’ve never owned before, possibly including a collectible from a previous Witches Festival event.

Finally, head to the Crown Store to snag some killer Halloween-themed deals on the Dark Passions Regalia costume, Witches Coven furnishing pack, Nightmare Firestalker Cub pet, and Sister Gellenna houseguest.

Here’s our chat with the developers on how classic horror inspired Elder Scrolls Online’s Stonethorn DLC.

The latest chapter in The Elder Scrolls Online, titled Greymoor, takes players back to the white cold expanse of Skyrim (opens in new tab), or at least, the very northwestern corner. While the new playground doesn’t stretch the entirety of Skyrim’s map, what is there effectively captures the look and mood of 2011’s The Elder Scrolls 5, while adding a distinctly dark, gothic flavor. Some areas, like Morthal, look almost identical to how we remember them, while Blackreach, for instance, has been substantially expanded and tweaked.

We’ve been playing Greymoor for a couple weeks now, and in that time collected folders of screenshots. Make no mistake, The Dark Heart of Skyrim has been kind to Elder Scrolls Online visually, and the latest chapter is the MMO’s prettiest yet. If you’re looking for a few scenic rest stops to punctuate battles with vampires, werewolves, and witches, look no further than this handy travel guide for the best spots to see and explore.

6. Blackreach: Greymoor Caverns

Skyrim’s dark, witch-infested underbelly is utterly grand. Blackreach was in Elder Scrolls 5, but not as we see it in Greymoor – the original Blackreach from Skyrim is now just one of four distinct cavern structures. Luminous purple geodes shoot from the ground in Dusktown, while Greymoor Keep is home to a massive gothic vampire castle. Diverse, otherworldly, and dangerous, the underground caves of Blackreach might not be ideal for smooth, leisurely strolls, but they’re fascinating to explore nonetheless.

Playing through the main story and sidequests of Greymoor will take you through Blackreach more than once, but it’s worth the time touring every square inch. You can access Blackreach by finding one of three “Great Lifts,” which will take you below the ground to the caverns.

5. Solitude

A famous landmark and centerpiece of Greymoor, strolling through Solitude is the nostalgic mind trip you’re looking for in The Elder Scrolls Online’s latest chapter. You’ll be introduced to Solitude almost immediately after watching the opening cinematic, ZeniMax using the power of nostalgia to pull you in right from the get-go. You’d be hard-pressed to find any substantial differences between Greymoor and Skyrim’s versions of Solitude, even though Greymoor is set roughly 1000 years before The Elder Scrolls 5.

Though admittedly ZeniMax could’ve done more to rewind Solitude and make it better reflect Greymoor’s much earlier timeline, there are some differences. First of all, you’ll notice right away it’s a younger, cleaner city in its prime. The centuries have yet to wear down the walls and roads, leaving Solitude with a glow you don’t see in The Elder Scrolls 5. Likewise, some local businesses have yet to change hands in Greymoor’s Solitude, like The Lonely Troll, which is The Winking Skeever from the original Skyrim.

4. Dragon Bridge

While civilized areas like Solitude and Morthal look strikingly similar to their Skyrim counterparts, Dragon Bridge is a reminder that Greymoor takes place 10 centuries before Skyrim. The iconic bridge itself looks structurally identical, but without the stone tiles that would later mark the path.

Likewise, the adjacent village you’ll remember from Skyrim is a humble military outpost in Greymoor, occupied only by guards and a few small tents. Once the novelty of seeing Skyrim again wears off, it’s areas like Dragon Bridge that make Greymoor feel like its own game instead of a 2020 massively-multiplayer remaster.

3. Wreck of the Icerunner

In Skyrim, this location is the scene of a shipwreck caused by the Solitude lighthouse being put out by the Dragonborn. But for whatever reason, ships were crashing into the same coastline 1000 years earlier in Greymoor. Messy continuity aside, in Greymoor times the wreck site rests between the frozen Karth river and the Solitude coast, and it’s an enchanting stay exploring the graves of the misfortuned vessels.

You’ll find the icy ship graveyard by talking to a shivering NPC near Solitude, who will ask you to find some raw meat and take it to his starving comrades at their beached ship. And that’s apparently because it’d be far too tasking for the sailors to simply walk a few minutes to the bustling metropolis of Solitude. Regardless, it’s a snappy little mini-quest well worth taking on, if only for the sights you’ll encounter along the way.

2. The wilderness

If there is one single image that represents Skyrim, for many it’s not built-up cities like Solitude or Whiterun – which sadly isn’t featured in Greymoor – it’s the streams that run through and away from them and the countless powdered trees that populate the backdrop. Wintery, rocky, forested nature.

That’s why roaming around directionless could be the best way for ESO players to recapture that oft-desired Skyrim atmosphere. Breaking away from towns is also the only way to (mostly) avoid big crowds of other players facing off in spectacular magic fights atop strange mounts – something you definitely won’t find strolling through the streets of Western Skyrim in The Elder Scrolls 5. Better yet, the new Antiquities system rewards you for simply roaming around looking for hidden relics. And if you thought the landscapes were beautiful in 2011’s Skyrim, seeing them through the lens of 2020’s Elder Scrolls Greymoor will make you realize what a difference nine years can mean.

1. Harrowstorms

Part of the Icereach Witch Coven’s attempts to take over Skyrim, Harrowstorms are epic new world events that demand attention no matter what you might’ve been doing before. Massive, swirling red supernatural rituals capable of zapping the life from entire town populations, Harrowstorms are every bit as spectacular as they are… harrowing.

In the eye of each storm is a big baddie surrounded by Harrowed, with your goal being to defeat the enemies and expel the storm. Harrowstorms play a key role in Greymoor’s story, and they’ll continue to occur randomly across the map even after you’ve completed the main quest, so don’t worry about trying to find one – they’ll find you.

Good thing The Elder Scrolls Online keeps getting bigger, otherwise we’d have nothing scrolls-y to do while we wait on Elder Scrolls 6 (opens in new tab).

Free trials for a game usually take place over the weekend, but you’re gonna need more time than that to explore all of Tamriel in Elder Scrolls Online (opens in new tab) – lucky you, Zenimax Online is hosting a free trial week from April 11 to April 18.

All you need to do is head to the Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, or Steam page for ESO: Tamriel Unlimited after 10am Eastern / 3pm BST and download the game. After that you’ll be able to create an account and login free of charge. Should you choose to take part in the free trial week, you’ll be given 500 Crowns (the in-game currency used for cosmetics, boosts, and loot boxes), and any progress you make will be carried over to the full version.

If you decide your adventures in Tamriel are worth continuing, you’ll receive a discount on the base game or the Gold Edition, which contains the Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood DLC packs. ESO no longer requires a subscription, so no need to plan out a monthly budget beyond the game itself.

ESO has changed a lot since launch (opens in new tab), with even more content planned for the future. Next up for the MMO? The island of Vvardenfell with The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind (opens in new tab).

In the grand tradition of all MMOs, the launch of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (opens in new tab) on console isn’t going particularly well. With many a cry of ‘Elder Scrolls Offline’, the PS4 and Xbox One version, developed by Zenimax Online Studios is having multiple issues, from not loading at all to characters glitching out of view. You can see our full list of Elder Scrolls Online console issues and fixes (opens in new tab)here.

Reddit (opens in new tab) and the Elder Scrolls Online forums (opens in new tab) are filled with frustrated players who have been unable to login since launch at midnight last night and have been faced with a constant loading screen. Some have managed to skip between NA and EU servers to get access but this has only been working for some people. Zenimax has been responding to complaints and is working on a fix for both EU and NA servers.

Community co-ordinator Jason Leavey commented on the Elder Scrolls Online forum (opens in new tab) this morning. “Hey everyone. If you have been experiencing login errors, we ask that you please try to log into the console megaservers again. While we are continuing to work on resolving the issue, we have found that the issue has been fixed for some players at this point. We will continue to work on this until it’s resolved for all players, and we’ll provide an update when we can. Thank you again for your patience throughout the night.”

We’re working to fix an issue affecting #ESOTU console logins on NA and EU. Keep an eye on this thread for updates: http://t.co/1mply44M3AJune 9, 2015

But login issues don’t appear to be the only problems. The above image shows a relatively common complaint reported on both ESO’s forums (opens in new tab) and Reddit (opens in new tab) where Lyris Titanborn disappears from view. No interactions can then take place and players are unable to progress. Hopefully fixes are coming for multiple issues. Someone at Zenimax isn’t going to be sleeping for a while.
