CW Arrowverse character Dreamer is about to make her mainstream DC comics debut in Superman: Son of Kal-El #13, and she’s bringing Nicole Maines, the actor who portrayed Dreamer on CW’s Supergirl show, with her. And now, DC has released a preview of interior pages from the issue.

Maines, who previously wrote a story starring Dreamer in the DC Pride 2022 one-shot and who will also write a solo Dreamer graphic novel, will co-write Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 alongside regular series writer Tom Taylor, with the title’s regular artist Clayton Henry providing art.

Dreamer is Nia Nal, an alien superhero who is also the ancestor of the hero Dream Girl from the Legion of Super-Heroes, an expansive team of heroes from many different worlds who exist in the 31st century, and who have adventured alongside Jon Kent when he was still going by the moniker ‘Superboy.’

Here’s the gallery of pages and covers from Superman: Son of Kal-El #13:

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #13, Jon Kent and his boyfriend, journalist Jay Nakamura, team up with Dreamer after she has a premonition about superheroes in the DC Universe. Considering many of the top heroes of the DC Universe are currently dead in the Dark Crisis event, whatever she’s dreaming of must be pretty bad.

Dreamer’s dark premonition also seems to involve both Lex Luthor, Superman’s traditional arch enemy, and Henry Bendix, who has been butting heads with Jon Kent for some time now – or, as DC describes Luthor and Bendix, “a pair of old capitalists who have literally weaponized trampling on human rights.”

Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 goes one sale July 12.

Dreamer is one of the most prominent trans superhero characters. Here are the most iconic LGBTQIA+ characters in comic books.

ENTER: MAGOG

So begins the final issue of DC’s Earth-Prime, the six-issue comic book limited series that brought together the heroes of the publisher’s CW TV universe in a story set in Arrowverse canon. Characters like Batwoman, the Flash, and more starred in each of one of the series’ six issues, challenged by the machinations of a shadowy Big Bad. Now that Big Bad is coming into the spotlight to conclude his plan, and it spells chaos for the heroes of Earth-Prime.

Earth-Prime’s superheroes came from their TV home to comic books for this multiversal, in-continuity adventure, so it would make sense that the story reverberates in the Arrowverse going forward. But how much it does and whether it will at all is apparently a mixed bag.

Since the series finale just went on sale June 21, we’ll start with one of these before we explain:

Spoilers ahead for Earth-Prime #6: Hero’s Twilight

Earth-Prime #6: Hero's Twilight

(opens in new tab)

Earth-Prime #6: Hero’s Twilight is drawn by Will Robson, written by Jeff Hersh and Thomas Pound, colored by Alex Sinclair, and lettered by Tom Napolitano. If you’ve been keeping up with Newsarama’s coverage of Earth-Prime, you know the comic’s Big Bad is Magog, originally introduced in the pages of the landmark comic book series Kingdom Come

Unlike his comics counterpart, the CW-verse iteration of Magog seeks to end humanity’s dependence on superheroes. To do so, he’s assembled a team of villains including the mind-warping Evil Eye, the shape-shifting Clayface, the Flash villain Bloodwork (put in a pin in that), and an alternate-reality version of Kal-El. Together, they become a threat that will require every one of Earth-Prime’s heroes to defeat.

Unfortunately, most of them have disappeared.

After every confrontation between hero and villain, a strange green mist makes the headliners of the CW-verse (and stars of Earth-Prime) disappear from their reality. By the time Magog himself descends upon Central City in the year 2049, the only heroes left to stop him are recent additions to the Flash family: Nora West-Allen, AKA XS, and Bart West-Alen, AKA Impulse.

Doing what little they can to stave off Magog’s assault of Earth-Prime, XS and Impulse finally manage to track down an older Clark Kent from Superman & Lois. Retired from his Superman identity, Clark still manages to give the best advice in the multiverse, spurring the two speedsters to lead one last-ditch attack on the head of the invasion: Magog himself.

XS and Impulse learn that the source of Magog’s power is in his golden spear. The heroes manage to splinter it, negating Magog’s abilities. Just then, before Magog’s army of supervillains can regroup, a strange green cloud brings back the superheroes of Earth-Prime. With the might of the CW’s heroes behind them, XS and Impulse defeat Magog for good, and the world is saved.

Or is it?

As the returned heroes round up the villains, they discover a problem. No one can find the black-clad, evil Kal-El from another reality. This evil Kryptonian, who sought to “save” his world by brutally murdering everyone he considered bad or weak, has completely vanished. The heroes decide not to deal with it just yet, with Jay Garrick calling it “a mystery for another day.”

Earth-Prime #6: Hero's Twilight

Earth-Prime #6: Hero’s Twilight finale page (Image credit: DC)

(opens in new tab)

But that’s not even the main kicker. On the final page of Earth-Prime #6, a mysterious, green-cloaked figure who appeared throughout the story reveals himself as the late Oliver Queen in his Arrowverse role as the Spectre. Oliver/the Spectre reveals he was behind the appearance and reappearance of the heroes during the battle with Magog, and its purpose was to teach XS and Impulse to rely on each other and to prepare them for something coming in their future.

“They must be ready for what’s coming,” Ollie-Spectre ominously warns.

Earlier in the Earth-Prime saga, Newsarama speculated that Kingdom Come was coming to the CW, with Magog as its primary antagonist. And though that’s still a possibility, the events of Earth-Prime #6 make it seem like this evil Kal-El will be a more immediate threat in the heroes’ future.

But with the Arrowverse shrinking through a series of recent cancellations, does all the foreshadowing mean anything? The final pages of Earth-Prime #6 are clearly intended to tease a future event. The story in fact end with the copy “The End … For Now.”

But not so fast, says DC. The publisher tells Newsarama nothing in the main Earth-Prime story is connected to any kind of future Arrowverse crossover.

Oddly, however, the Earth-Prime finale also hints at something that will immediately affect the Arrowverse – specifically the upcoming season 9 of The Flash.

A backup story by Hersh and Pound with art by Pablo M. Collar, colors by John Kalisz, and letters by Napolitano (which continues from a back-up in Earth-Prime #5L The Flash by writers Jess Carson and Emily Palizzi, Collar, Kalisz, and Andworld Design) takes place back in 2022, at the A.R.G.U.S. Headquarters, where Cisco Ramon trains the new Phantom Girl to take up a role as a superhero.

When a breakout begins in the security ward, it’s up to the duo to stop a cadre of villains from getting out of A.R.G.U.S. HQ. And though they do manage to stop them (for the most part), there is one escapee that gets by them. That’s Bloodwork, Dr. Ramsey Rosso (played by actor Sendhil Ramamurthy in the Arrowverse), one of the most monstrous villains to ever be on The Flash, who was seen in the year 2049. And the backup story ends with an explicit confirmation of his return to TV.

“To be continued in Season 9 of The Flash,” the story promises.

So The Flash fans should expect to Bloodwork/Ramamurthy in the new season of the series, perhaps even as its big bad. But as to Oliver Queen’s prophecy and preparations, not so much.

It gets hot in August in most of the US (and very hot in a big part of it) so DC is letting some of its superheroes ditch the spandex that doesn’t breathe so well in the summertime to cavort in swimsuits (or swimming costumes as our British friends at GamesRadar would say) for the month.

Hey, in this case, ‘swimming costumes’ might actually be more appropriate!

No, Bruce Wayne won’t be facing down the Joker rockin’ just the famous black trunks in the pages of Batman, but DC will be letting the Dark Knight, Catwoman, Nubia, Nightwing, Black Adam, and more hit the beach and the pool in a series of swimsuit variant covers during the summer month by artists like Artgerm, Joëlle Jones, Nicola Scott, Mikel Janín and more.

Once a staple of the ’90s during the Wizard Magazine era, Newsarama counts 10 swimsuit variant covers in August that are a little more subtle in 2022 than they might have once been.

Hey, did we also mention the DC full August 2022 solicits hit your browser on Friday, May 20 at noon ET?

So here’s a slightly early look at the swimsuit variant covers we found in DC’s August offerings, who drew them, and what issues you’ll find the covers on.

The DC Universe’s greatest cooperative of superheroes, the Justice League, is dead.

On April 26 in the pages of Justice League #75 (opens in new tab), nine of the ten core members of the Justice League including Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman were gathered in deep space to battle a conglomeration of the most vicious villains in the universe known as the Dark Army and were during the fight – with only one member returning alive.

And so, the comics world is mourning the sudden, sad deaths of the Metropolis’s Man of Steel, Gotham City’s Caped Crusader, and the Warrior Princess of Themyscira along with Aquaman, Zatanna, John Stewart (Green Lantern), Green Arrow, Black Canary, Hawkgirl, and Martian Manhunter. And in a larger sense, the world also mourns the loss of the preeminent superhero organization the Justice League itself, which will remain dormant for the foreseeable future according to a spokesperson for the organization, DC writer Joshua Williamson.

The Justice League was founded in 1960 when the alien conqueror Starro first attempted to conquer Earth, with Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter joining forces to defeat the psychic starfish, along with an assist from Superman and Batman, a tale told in the immortal The Brave & The Bold #28 (opens in new tab).

Shortly after, the team was officially codified with Superman and Batman joining up during an attack by another alien despot, Despero, who attempted to use his mind-control abilities to commandeer the League.

This burgeoning era is chronicled starting in Justice League of America #1 (opens in new tab) (also in 1960), which began the League’s original heyday. In these years, they expanded their membership quickly, bringing in heroes such as Zatanna, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and many more – forming a core membership roster that has lasted off-and-on as the heart of the Justice League until their deaths on April 26.

Through the decades, the League has protected the Earth from threats greater than most of us could even imagine, from the existential destruction of reality itself to countless alien invasions, and the innumerable plots of those who would use their own superpowers for evil instead of good.

The world may never see the likes of the Justice League again – let alone the individual heroes such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

(Or will it?

And though there are still those with the power to step into the shoes of Earth’s greatest protectors, most of us will be left with a sentiment perhaps best expressed by Superman himself in his eulogy for Martian Manhunter’s first funeral during the Final Crisis (opens in new tab) event: “We’ll all miss [them], and pray for a resurrection.”

The Justice League is survived by the Titans and the Teen Titans.

‘Death of the Justice League’ in Justice League #75 (opens in new tab) has finally arrived. In the April 26 issue, the core team members including Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman are killed and the subsequent upcoming event Dark Crisis will explore how their deaths impact the larger DC Universe … at least in the pages of Dark Crisis, anyway.

And since this is comic books we’re talking about, you can bet that Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and the rest won’t stay dead forever. Hell, most of them have already come back from the dead at least once.

The idea of heroes returning from the dead has been part of fiction as long as, well, heroes themselves. Even in popular fiction, characters such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes perished on the page, only to return later when time and authorship demanded. In terms of superheroes, the number of villains and minor heroes who seemed to die only to return with little or no fanfare in the early years of the genre is almost uncountable.

The Death of Superman

(opens in new tab)

In the early ’80s, Marvel Comics began popularizing the idea of superhero death and rebirth as a storytelling (and even marketing) tool ‘Dark Phoenix Saga (opens in new tab),’ in which Jean Grey died only to be resurrected a few years later when the course of storytelling demanded it.

And of course, there’s Marvel’s first-ever graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel (opens in new tab), from which the title hero, Mar-Vell, has never actually returned. DC didn’t shy away from the idea itself, with the deaths of Barry Allen, the Silver Age Flash, and Kara Zor-El (the original Supergirl) serving as centerpiece moments for the crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths (opens in new tab) – which was, in a way, about the death and rebirth of an entire superhero multiverse and its continuity.

But the concept of superheroes dying and returning from the dead truly took hold in 1992’s landmark story ‘The Death of Superman (opens in new tab)‘ (still some of the highest-selling comic books and then subsequent collections of all time), which took not just the comic industry but mainstream media by storm, leading to fans lining up around the block across the country to purchase copies of what was, at the time, one of the most famous stories ever told in comics.

The Death of Superman

(opens in new tab)

This flipped the comic industry on its head, and along with Todd McFarlane’s 1990 relaunch of Spider-Man and then the subsequent 1991 X-Men relaunch by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee, 1992’s ‘Death of Superman’ sent the comic book market into a speculation boom with sales numbers that were (and still are) nearly unheard of – all on the back of the death of one of the most popular characters in fiction.

Readers today can get salty over the fact superheroes dying and returning soon after have become commonplace and a tool to boost sales, fully embracing (and some would say chasing) the industry highs that arrived on the back of the ‘Death of Superman’.

Still, Newsarama’s most-read and far-reaching articles over the past few years show that, whatever fans may think of the concept, the idea of superheroes like the aforementioned Justice League or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dying remains a tried and true way to attract widespread attention and can move units like little else in the comic book industry.

But it all comes back to the ‘Death of Superman’ and its subsequent ‘Funeral for a Friend (opens in new tab)‘ and ‘Reign of the Supermen (opens in new tab)‘ arcs – the collective three-part story that codified the place occupied by superhero death and resurrection in both storytelling and comic book marketing to this day, for fans, publishers, and retailers alike.

The Death of Superman

The Death of Superman

Though the idea of Superman dying wasn’t brand new in 1992, it was a fresh concept for the era of more interconnected mainstream superhero comics with bigger ongoing arcs, which rarely veer into what DC once called “Imaginary Stories” that don’t factor into the continued narrative of a character. This means that, for the first time, readers, retailers, and even a publisher were faced with what was purported to be the true, real death of a character of Superman’s popularity in mainstream continuity, where it ‘counted.’

At the time of the story, Superman had four separate ongoing titles – Action Comics, Superman, Superman: The Man of Steel, and The Adventures of Superman (a model that would later be copied by Marvel for Spider-Man, eventually leading to the idea of weekly series at both publishers, such as in the current ‘Spider-Man Beyond’ era). ‘The Death of Superman’ stretched through all four of these, as well as Justice League of America (where Superman was a central character) and Green Lantern (one of the first subsequent titles to chase the ‘Death of Superman’ hype for itself).

Throughout November 1992, the issues of the various Superman titles teased the arrival of a monster known as Doomsday – a threat massive enough to scare even the supposedly invulnerable Superman. When Doomsday and Superman finally clashed in Superman #75 (opens in new tab), Superman’s fears were proven completely founded, as the villain managed to beat Superman to death, with the Man of Steel dying in Lois Lane’s arms, surrounded by his allies in the Justice League.

The hype around Superman’s death almost couldn’t have been bigger. Mainstream media outlets published high-profile stories that mourned Superman almost the same way they would cover the death of an important real-world figure.

The Death of Superman

The landmark Superman #75 cover (Image credit: DC)

(opens in new tab)

Still despite the hype, few comic shop owners or fans held onto the illusion that Superman may stay permanently dead, with some even publicly acknowledging that the story was ultimately a marketing gimmick well before it was published.

“Superman’s death is being done for the same reason that a TV series may throw in a wedding: to give ratings a boost,” stated Don Thompson, then co-editor of Comics Buyer’s Guide, in a September 1992 Newsday article from the time, which was syndicated through numerous major newspapers.

(h/t to Superman fan-site Fortress of Baileytude (opens in new tab) who have archived numerous articles and publications from the time of the ‘Death of Superman’).

That same article quotes retailer Glenn Fischette of Fourth World Comics in Smithtown, New York (still open, and still owned and operated by Fischette (opens in new tab)), who told the publication “I wouldn’t be surprised, and I heard this from someone else in the industry, if they reconstructed him and brought him back even more powerful.”

Then as now, however, this inherent skepticism to the genre trappings of superhero comics did little to curtail sales of Superman #75 and the subsequent milestone issues of the story.

Fans flocked to retailers, lining up and waiting to hoard multiple copies of the death of Superman which, it was widely believed, would undoubtedly skyrocket in value. Few fans made their fortunes reselling those millions of copies, but retailers – who collectively moved the mind-boggling number of over six million copies of Superman #75, including variant editions – managed to make a mint for themselves and for DC, putting the burgeoning speculation boom into overdrive and sending fans flocking to buy any and all comic books they perceived could appreciate in value.

Superman – Funeral for a Friend

The Death of Superman

art from Superman – Funeral for a Friend (Image credit: DC)

Just about everyone who doesn’t actually live in the DC Universe was of the understanding that Superman would return. But in the DC Universe, Superman’s death was feared to be permanent and was as momentous an occasion among Kal-El’s fellow heroes as it was among fans and retailers in the real world.

The arc immediately following Superman’s death was titled ‘Funeral for a Friend,’ and dealt with exactly what the title implies – the effect on the world of the loss of its greatest protector, and the impact of both Superman’s life and death on his fellow superheroes.

The emotional tragedy of the larger story doesn’t stop at Superman’s death, and in fact, only ramps up in ‘Funeral for a Friend’. In the wake of Superman’s death, Metropolis is overrun by a wave of crime that even a team of heroes funded by Superman’s former foe Lex Luthor can’t overcome, while Superman’s closest friends – and even some enemies – begin wearing black armbands with Superman’s logo on them to openly display their mourning.

(opens in new tab)

But it all caps off with Superman’s human father, Jonathan Kent, suffering a potentially fatal heart attack, a compounded horror for those closest to Clark Kent just as they’re already caught up in Clark’s death.

In the real world, DC took another relatively unprecedented move in the wake of Pa Kent’s death (pun not intended), suspending all four of Superman’s ongoing titles for several months to prolong any chance at maintaining some surprise in Superman’s return by delaying the publication of solicitation text that would undoubtedly give away the timeframe in which he was planned to come back, if not how it would happen (something that has only become more prevalent for modern readers thanks to the rapid turnaround of the entertainment news cycle).

This had the added impact of delaying readers’ knowledge of whether Pa Kent had died or not till after the break, when it was revealed that he was still alive, but comatose – and that in his coma, he had a vision of Clark, telling him to return.

‘Funeral for a Friend’ wraps up with the arrival of four new heroes, each claiming the right to be Superman (or even that they truly are the original Superman, returned) – and the reveal that Superman’s grave is empty.

Reign of the Supermen

Following ‘Funeral for a Friend,’ DC turned to another tried-and-true superhero concept by replacing Kal-El in the mantle of Superman – sort of. This idea was, again, nothing totally new for superheroes. Just a few years prior, in the ’80s, Marvel Comics had a whole wave of replacement heroes taking on established mantles, from John Walker becoming Captain America, to James Rhodes becoming Iron Man, and more.

And at DC, that idea was even more baked in thanks to the publisher having rebooted many of its Golden Age heroes (such as the aforementioned Green Lantern and Flash) as totally new characters in the ’50s and ’60s to kick off the superhero resurgence of the Silver Age – with the Silver Age Flash himself, Barry Allen, having been permanently replaced by his protégé/sidekick Wally West a little less than a decade before Superman’s death.

But true to the story’s nature, the third chapter in the saga, ‘Reign of the Supermen,’ kicked things up a notch by replacing Kal-El with not one but four heroes – Superboy, Cyborg Superman, Steel, and the Eradicator – each occupying one of the four Superman ongoing titles, while each also claiming to be the rightful heir to Superman’s legacy.

If you were a Superman fan at the time, you undoubtedly had a favorite from among the four, all of whom have stuck around in one form or another since their introductions, with Superboy and Steel embarking on superhero careers that forged their own legacies, Eradicator and Cyborg Superman have remained recurring villains, owing to their secret malicious nature which was hidden when ‘Reign of the Supermen’ first started.

The idea was so popular that it even spun off into a video game titled The Death and Return of Superman, in which players took control of Kal-El until his death, and then played through the rest of the game as the four Supermen – until Superman’s inevitable return, just as in comics.

Nowadays, it’s perfectly common for multiple heroes to use the same codename – there are two Supermans, two Batmans, two Captain Americas, two Spider-Mans, who knows how many Green Lanterns, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. But in 1993, the idea of having four different versions of Superman all running around, even competing for the right to be Superman, was a fresh twist on the concept of legacy heroes.

But Superman himself had to return eventually – few folks who followed the story, be they readers, retailers, or even some of the creators, held onto the illusion that Superman’s death could be permanent.

Before the story actually even started, then Superman line editor Mike Carlin stated in a faux-obituary, published in now-defunct comic distributor Capital Distributors solicitation catalog Advance Comics (h/t to Fortress of Baileytude again), that fans should recognize the possibility that Superman may come back from the dead.

“We don’t really know what death means to a Kryptonian,” Carlin stated at the time. “Never say we wouldn’t kill Superman, never say we wouldn’t bring him back.”

And of course, that’s exactly what happened – Superman returned with a slightly redesigned costume (the infamous mullet haircut), and after a short while resumed his life as the protector of Metropolis and the greatest hero of the DC Universe, while both his fans and his DC Universe contemporaries readjusted to his presence, after almost a full year of absence.

Superman’s full return arrived in Adventures of Superman #505 (opens in new tab), but by the time it was on shelves, the sales bubble of ‘The Death of Superman’ had somewhat peaked with Adventures of Superman #500 (opens in new tab), the issue in which Superman was initially planned to return before that aspect of the story was delayed.

Still, the impact on the industry as a whole – in terms of both the expectations of fans when a superhero dies or is retired and on the way comic books are marketed to mainstream audiences that drive larger sales numbers – had already taken place by the time the Superman bubble burst and the story went back to business as usual.

DC immediately chased the spike caused by a ‘death and return’ type plot by killing off or retiring and replacing Green Lantern, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, and others all in rapid succession, with varying levels of sales and story success, and Marvel followed suit in its own ways.

(opens in new tab)

And in the years since its publication, the ‘Death of Superman’ has become one of the Man of Steel’s most enduring stories, having been adapted as the aforementioned video game, a pair of animated films, multiple prose novels, several spiritual comic book sequels, and of course serving as a main plot point in the story of the films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (opens in new tab) and Justice League (opens in new tab).

The trend started by Superman’s death and return continues to this day, with DC even specifically repeating itself on this year’s 30th anniversary of Superman’s death in Superman #75. April’s Justice League #75 is slated to kill off nine major DC heroes, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, John Stewart, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna, Black Canary, Green Arrow, and Hawkgirl (one of whom, we don’t know who, will survive the deadly mission that kills the rest).

But unlike 1992’s ‘Death of Superman’, DC is taking a slightly different tactic with its marketing, with writer Joshua Williamson doing his best to sell readers on the idea that these heroes, and the Justice League they once formed, will be dead and gone for some time to come (even we’re somewhat skeptical of what it all means).

Whatever happens, one thing is for certain – the story reporting on April’s ‘Death of the Justice League’ has been one of the most widely read and shared articles Newsarama has published in years, and nearly everyone, long time reader and non-comic fan alike, has some level of reaction to the news of the impending death of DC’s greatest heroes.

‘The Death of Superman’ altered comics forever, but it took some major cues from Todd McFarlane’s 1990 launch of Spider-Man #1.

DC’s big June event is the start of the seven-issue event Dark Crisis proper, along with questions about how Dark Crisis fits in the current DCU timeline.

Dark Crisis is set in the future, when the Justice League is dead, even though there is no longer a monthly Justice League title, the dead Justice League members such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Aquaman are still alive and kicking in their ongoing series.

But June’s The Flash ongoing begins a story arc trying into the events of Dark Crisis, and DC is launching a new limited series Dark Crisis: Young Justice (there’s that Dark Crisis-colon stuff we told you to look for) in which Tim Drake, Impulse, Superboy, and Cassie Sandsmark get the band back together in the wake of the world mourning the loss of the dead Justice Leaguers … who aren’t dead in their own titles.

Hmmm, we’ll have thoughts on that game of DC continuity Jenga another time, but until then check out the rest of what DC has in store for June, including its Pride Month celebration with a new volume of its now-annual DC Pride anthology and new series starring Nubia, the Earth-11 Teen Justice, Poison Ivy, and a Tim Drake special, who reunites with his old Young Justice teammates Impulse, Superboy and … wait a minute.

No, as we say … another time.

The still-alive Batman returns to Gotham City, Black Adam also gets a new series, Flashpoint Beyond keeps going, Aquaman and the Flash team-up before or after they die in the new series Voidsong, and the Earth-Prime CW-DC comic book series wraps up.

So check out all of DC’s June 2022 solicitations and covers and you can also check out the DC March 2022 solicitations, the DC April 2022 solicitations, and the DC May 2022 solicitations and/or scroll through all of DC and Marvel’s most recent solicitations (including Marvel’s May edition) on our solicitations tab.

Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s Batman/Superman World’s Finest is leveling up into a new ongoing series on March 15 and DC has released a preview of the first nine pages of the 32-page debut issue.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1 cover by Dan Mora (Image credit: DC)

(opens in new tab)

Published without house ads, Batman/Superman World’s Finest #1 includes the creative team’s January 25 Detective Comics #1050 (opens in new tab) lead-in story.

Described as a “brand-new day” for the classic superhero pairing, the series takes place in the “not-too-distant past,” when Dick Grayson was 17-18 years old and still operating as Robin.

In the debut issue, the Man of Steel’s Kryptonian power powers are dangerously super-charged following an attack by his arch-villain Metallo, and Superman turns to Batman for help. A near-fatal burst of power makes the Caped Crusader go to his own extreme measures to help his friend, with the extreme measures asking the Doom Patrol for help.

Check out the preview below, which also includes an appearance by Poison Ivy.

The World’s Finest title began its life in 1941 and was published continually until 1986, featuring some form of a Superman and Batman team-up in most issues.

It’s been replaced in more recent years by a few series simply titled Batman/Superman, but DC seems to be combining the two title conventions for the new Waid/Mora series.

World's Finest

(opens in new tab)

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1 has multiple variant covers, including two ‘Slap Battle’ variants by Chip Zdarsky humorously lampooning Superman and Batman arguing over whose name goes first in the title (Batman won), a “High Five” variant by Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner, and covers by Jim Lee, Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, Jason Fabok, Lee Weeks, and a “Jerry Seinfeld in the Bat-Mobile Getting Coffee” variant by Mora.

For Waid, World’s Finest is one of two major DC projects for the prolific writer/editor/executive/retailer in 2022 after he broke a 12-year-hiatus late in 2020 with a story in Dark Nights: Death Metal: The Last Stories of the DC Universe (opens in new tab) anthology. Waid will write a DC Black Label Superman series with Bryan Hitch in 2022 as well, at least according to Hitch.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest qualifies for inclusion on Newsarama’s list of all new Batman comics, graphic novels, and collections in 2022.

Writer Tom Taylor and Yasmine Putri’s Dark Knights of Steel is a fun alternate world romp (what DC likes to call “Elseworlds”) featuring one of today’s most popular story devices – twists on iconic superheroes, characters, and plotlines. And in December 7’s Dark Knights of Steel #2 (opens in new tab), Taylor and Putri serve up a fun twist on the Superman-Supergirl relationship, along with introducing a surprising romantic partner for that world’s Wonder Woman.

Dark Knights of Steel #2

(opens in new tab)

Spoilers ahead for Dark Knights of Steel #2

Dark Knights of Steel is set in a medieval-like/fantasy world in which numerous recognizable DC characters appear in familiar roles comparable to their contemporary status quos – but with the aforementioned medieval twists.

Black Lightning, Batman and all his Robins, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Harley Quinn, and more all appear, with the biggest difference between the world of Dark Knights of Steel and the DC Universe most fans know is that Superman’s parents Jor-El and Lara accompany baby Kal in a spaceship escaping the destruction of Krypton.

Landing on this medieval-like world, Jor-El and Lara wind up as monarchs of a kingdom at war with a rival nation led by Black Lightning.

Set immediately after the murder of Jor-El in issue #1 by an assassin who’s referred to as the Green Man (the presumably but so far not-fully-revealed Green Lantern of this world) and Oliver (Green Arrow, of course), and Lois Lane is sent to Amazon Island to deliver the news of Jor-El’s death.

There, readers meet the Dark Knights of Steel incarnation of Diana/Wonder Woman along with someone who looks a lot like the traditional DC Universe’s Supergirl/Kara Zor-El – but who in this reality is surprisingly revealed as Princess Zala, Jor-El’s daughter and Kal-El’s sister.

Dark Knights of Steel #2

meet ZALA Kal-El (Image credit: DC)

Which makes her Superman’s second sibling to be introduced in the first two issues of this series – and the first brand new character to be introduced as a Kryptonian sibling for Kal-El, albeit in an alt-reality.

Zala, like her brother Kal, has yet to discover Bruce Wayne is secretly their half-brother (as revealed in the final pages of the first issue) in what’s quickly becoming DC’s very own super-Game of Thrones style epic.

The pair briefly grieve Jor-El’s murder, and Diana offers Zala comfort, revealing Diana and Zala are lovers and partners before Zala flies off.

Dark Knights of Steel #2

Diana and Zala share a moment (Image credit: DC)

The moment adds a second upending of Earth-Prime continuity and its traditional relationships and a fun twist to what’s been a decades-long flirtation between Superman and Wonder Woman over their history, which was fully consummated during the ‘New 52’ era when the publisher rebooted the Man of Steel’s long-time relationship with Lois Lane and Clark and Diana officially but briefly became a couple.

And while it’s not Kara per se, the moment could be seen as something of DC’s answer to another version of Supergirl, the WB’s live-action Kara Danvers, whose romantic relationship with Lena Luthor that was never fully embraced onscreen despite loyal fans clamoring for confirmation of their romance before the series ended last month – a media trope sometimes derisively called ‘queer-baiting’ in which characters are implied to be queer with stories and subjects that relate to queer fans, without ever confirming the character’s sexuality or place in the queer community.

The comic book version of Kara/Supergirl herself is something gay icon. And though she’s never been outwardly portrayed as queer, she’s been perceived as ‘queer-coded’ before, meaning aspects of her story and personality are relatable to queer fans, despite there being no official confirmation of the character’s sexuality.

In creator Mariko Tamaki and Joëlle Jones’s 2016-2017’s out-of-continuity Supergirl: Being Super (opens in new tab) limited series, Kara is not expressly codified as being queer, though writer Tamaki has related the emotions and experiences of her version of Supergirl to her own experience as a queer woman.

The Supergirl-Wonder Woman relationship and passionate kiss also further DC’s ongoing embrace of the LGBTQIA+ community in more recent years, and especially in 2021. The publisher recently reunited the fan-favorite couple Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, and introduced high-profile, attention-grabbing storylines in which Alan Scott/Green Lantern, Tim Drake/Red Robin, and Jon Kent/Superman all began journeys discovering and embracing their queerness.

Dark Knights of Steel #2

That’s cold Zala… (Image credit: DC)

(opens in new tab)

We’ll see where Zala’s relationships with Kal and Diana go in upcoming issues, but it may not be all idyllic sibling and romantic love as in the final pages of the issue, Zala straight-up murders Black Lightning’s son in retaliation for the murder of her father. King Jefferson Pierce appears to have Jor-El killed based on his advisor Constantine’s prophecy around the aliens-versus-magic-users feud between the Kingdoms.

Zala almost gleefully dropping Black Lightning’s son out of the sky to his death will certainly escalate the war between the kingdoms and complicate her relationships.

But you’ll have to wait until January’s Dark Knights of Steel #3 to find out.

Despite the brevity of the relationship, the Wonder Woman-Superman pairing still makes them one of the most iconic superhero couples of all time.

DC’s solicitations for all comic books on sale on February 2022 features some interesting spins on its iconic superheroes.

Aquaman turns 81 in 2022 but he isn’t too old to adapt. He begins the next phase of his career as one-half of the new duo of Aquamen, co-starring in a new ongoing series along with former Aqualad Jackson Hyde by co-writers Brandon Thomas and Chuck Brown and artist Sami Basri.

And Mary Marvel … AKA Mary Bromfield AKA Lady Shazam gets the ‘Lady’ qualifier removed from her title as for the first time in her long career as she takes over as the sole Champion of Shazam from Billy Batson and stars in her hard-to-believe first-ever solo limited series appropriately titled The New Champion of Shazam by writer Josie Campbell and artist Evan “Doc” Shaner.

Batman (no, not that one) leaves Gotham City for the real-world New York City in I Am Batman #6 by John Ridley and Ken Lashley, and Jace Fox is bringing the entire Fox family with him to the Big Apple.

As for Gotham City, the extended Bat-family contends with Batman (yes, that one) leaving his home city in the continued ‘Shadows of the Bat’ event in four issues of the weekly Detective Comics

In the main story by writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Max Raynor of two serialized tales, Psycho-Pirate is back in Gotham after interning for Darkseid for a few weeks in Infinite Frontier and is making his presence felt in Gotham’s new criminally-insane asylum Arkham Tower.

Plus the debut of a new Monkey Prince series, a new “horrific and blackhearted” Suicide Squad series, and DC celebrates Valentine’s Day the comic book way in a Weird Love Tales one-shot special.

So check out all of DC’s February 2022 solicitations and covers and you can also check out the DC November 2021 solicitations, the DC December 2021 solicitations, and the DC January 2022 solicitations, and/or scroll through all of DC and Marvel’s most recent solicitations on our solicitations tab.

The list of people very badly wanting to kill Dr. Wear grows, and Nightwing is on the precipice of cracking the whole scheme wide open! But with the maniacal Party Crashers waging war against the Bat-Family across Gotham, Dick must choose between helping a tower full of villains and helping his family!
Then, it’s Knightfall in Gotham during part seven of “House of Gotham,” as the Boy (growing into a man before our eyes) runs afoul of an uber-violent, unhinged Azrael Batman! This latest conflict pushes Gotham’s most vulnerable into madness, and one man’s rogues gallery reveals itself as another man’s salvation.

It’s Nightwing versus Psycho-Pirate in the grand finale of “Shadows of the Bat” act two of three! As Gotham’s elite gather to celebrate the formal opening of Arkham Tower, Dr. Wear’s secret weapon is more unhinged than ever, and the storm clouds of disaster gather above the city’s monument to reform! The Party Crashers, the Bat-Family, Penguin’s forces, and a tower full of innocent civilians and villainous patients converge in the chapter you’ll need to see to believe! Spoiler alert: not everyone makes it out alive!
Every story has two sides, and as much as Batman has reached out his hand through the darkness to try to help the Boy, there are too many hands in the shadows of Gotham pulling in the other direction. The finale of act two of “House of Gotham” poses a stark choice: Live with the family you know, or betray everything you’ve learned to be true?

The attacks begin without warning. Brutal, sudden…cannibalistic. A metahuman with all the power of Superman but none of his humanity. An unstoppable being ruled only by hunger and instinct, striking at random across the world. To stop this threat, Harley Quinn, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark have been assigned to corral, nursemaid, and if necessary execute five deadly new recruits: the expendable products of a secret government procedure called BLAZE. They’re ordinary prisoners, endowed with incredible power…and the certain knowledge that it’ll burn through them like wildfire. They have six months to live, maximum. If you’re staring down life in prison, maybe that’s a good deal—especially if you’re Michael Van Zandt, desperate to reunite with the mad lover who forsook you after your Bonnie-and-Clyde crime spree.
But that power? It’s surprisingly transferable. As each member of the Squad dies…the others get stronger. What would a hardened criminal do with that knowledge? Worse yet: What would a desperate, lovesick idiot do with it? One thing’s certain: this time the Suicide Squad’s bitten off more than it can chew. Win or lose—they all burn.
Simon Spurrier and Aaron Campbell, the creative team behind the critically acclaimed John Constantine: Hellblazer, have been turned loose on the one DC title even more horrific and blackhearted than that one! We suggest you brace yourselves…

The terrifying debut of the tie-in to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It begins here, with a story that’s bursting at the seams with clues about the Conjuring’s latest villainess…Meet Jessica. Jessica just returned to her freshman year of college after winter break, bringing with her the anxieties of last semester’s poor grades, the awkwardness of facing a boy she wishes she’d never slept with, and an undeniably unnerving feeling of being watched. She soon comes to realize that something evil made her its target, and it will not rest until it has her in its unholy grip. But why did this sinister presence set its sights on a seemingly normal college freshman? Read this nerve-racking tale, creepily crafted by Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It screenwriter David L. Johnson-McGoldrick and Rex Ogle with heart-stopping art from Garry Brown and chill-inducing covers by Bill Sienkiewicz, to find out! Featuring backup stories from the famed artifact room by some of comics best and creepiest creators! Collecting issues 1-5.

Don’t worry Superman fans.

That’s the message from comic book writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson in response to fans’ concerns about the future of the Man of Steel – and these days that means we need to distinguish that we’re talking about the elder, Kal-El/Clark Kent Man of Steel and not his son Jon, who has also taken up the Superman name.

While Jon has been getting all the mainstream media attention of late, and Clark has literally left Earth and installed his son as his replacement, Johnson, who writes Action Comics that features Superman Sr. has apparently seen online fretting and speculation that DC is prepared to permanently replace the soon-to-be 82-year old character.

[We italicized the word to acknowledge ‘permanent’ has a different connotation in the world of comic books, where almost nothing is permanent].

Heck, he might have even seen Newsarama’s recent story speculating as to whether the publisher plans to kill Superman on the 30th anniversary of the landmark 1992 ‘Death of Superman’ storyline in the ‘Warworld Saga’ story that kicked off in November 9’s Action Comics #1036 (opens in new tab).

While the writer doesn’t outright deny plans for another ‘Death of Superman’-type storyline, he tweets a different kind of assurance.

“I’ve been hearing from a lot of Superman fans who are scared by all the recent speculation that Warworld is part of some shady, backdoor corporate plan to ‘replace’ Clark as Superman,” Johnson writes on Twitter (opens in new tab).

“To those fans: I don’t know how to easy [sic] your worries without spoiling what’s coming, and I can’t do that. But I love Clark Kent as much as you do. Keep reading, and I promise we won’t betray you. Superman is forever.”

“Won’t betray you…” is pretty strong language. As is “shady, backdoor corporate plan.”

Action Comics #1039

Action Comics #1039 variant cover by Riccardo Federici (Image credit: DC)

(opens in new tab)

Johnson goes on to thank readers (in fact he tweets he can’t thank them enough and tweeted out an Action Comics #1039 variant cover by the series upcoming regular penciler Riccardo Federici as a sign of appreciation) for the love they’ve shown Action Comics and the ‘Warlord Saga’ and the trust he and his creative collaborators have gotten from DC.

While that doesn’t sound like someone about to kill a comic book icon, on the other hand, a worthy heroic death could also be seen as the ultimate gesture of respect, so we’re going to keep an eye on the Superman landscape well in 2022.

Will the ‘Warworld Saga’ someday be considered one of the best Superman stories of all time? For the record, ‘Death of Superman’ didn’t make the list.
