The post Two more Star Trek shows are reportedly in the works – including one set at Starfleet Academy appeared first on Game News.
]]>A Section 31 spinoff with Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as Emperor/Captain Georgiou has long been rumored to be in the works. Now, it’s seemingly becoming a reality – though no other information is forthcoming at this early stage.
Fans could have been forgiven for thinking it would be stuck in limbo forever, especially given Discovery’s unparalleled leap to the 32nd Century. Georgiou’s story, though, is neatly wrapped up and allows her to slide into any potential lead role in the more covert-heavy environment of Section 31.
The other series is aimed at a ‘younger audience’ and will be set at Starfleet Academy.
“I think we’re just getting started,” Kurtzman said of the expansion plans. “There’s just so much more to be had.” He added that he hopes Star Trek will be going further in future, “If it were up to me only, I would be pushing the boundaries much further than I think most people would want. I think we might get there,” he teased.
One of the next entries in the Star Trek television franchise, meanwhile, is the Strange New Worlds spinoff. Anson Mount (Captain Pike), Ethan Peck (Spock) and Rebecca Romijn (Number One) are all set to return in the undated series.
Alongside the heaving roster of Star Trek shows is a bright future on the big screen. WandaVision director Matt Shakman is helming a new movie, despite Quentin Tarantino’s own planned feature falling by the wayside.
From the depths of space to the far-flung future on Earth: here are the best sci-fi movies you absolutely have to watch.

]]>The post Star Trek: William Shatner would play Captain Kirk again with the right script appeared first on Game News.
]]>Talking to Metro (opens in new tab), Shatner detailed rather precisely what would need to happen for him to appear in as Captain Kirk for the first time in 26 years.
“If they wrote it and it made reasonable sense then I’d love to [play Captain Kirk],” the actor said. But if he’s going to come back as Captain Kirk, Shatner wants it to be a proper revival in a feature film.
“I wouldn’t do a series,” he clarified. “If the role was written properly and it wasn’t a cameo or gratuitous; being there just to show my face, I wouldn’t do that.”
Shatner also clarified that he hadn’t been contacted about appearing on Star Trek: Picard, and in fact confirmed he hadn’t been watching the series.
The fact that Shatner isn’t interested in a series rules out the recent Star Trek TV shows, including the aforementioned Picard, as well as Discovery and Short Treks. As for new Star Trek movies, the last to release in cinemas was 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, and it’s unclear if that film will ever get a sequel. Regardless, it’s safe to say Star Trek is sure to spawn at least a couple more movies at some point. Hopefully, then we’ll see Shatner reprise his iconic role as Captain Kirk once more – maybe even in that rumoured Quentin Tarantino Star Trek movie (opens in new tab)?
While release schedules are more than a bit uncertain at the moment, here’s what we know about the most exciting upcoming movies of 2020 (opens in new tab).

]]>The post Star Trek cast and more pay tribute to Anton Yelchin appeared first on Game News.
]]>It’s terribly sad news, not least because the talented actor had impressed in a number of other movies – including Like Crazy, Terminator: Salvation, Alpha Dog, and more recently Green Room – and still clearly had so much left to give. By all accounts he was well-liked across the industry too, something which has become even more apparent in the wake of his passing.
The cast and crew of the rebooted Star Trek franchise (and more) have filled Twitter with tributes to the actor who will reprise his role as Chekov in Star Trek Beyond (opens in new tab) when it hits cinemas this July.
Still in shock. Rest in peace, Anton. Your passion and enthusiasm will live on with everyone that had the pleasure of knowing you.June 19, 2016

]]>The post Star Treks Michael Dorn wants Worf TV show appeared first on Game News.
]]>In an interview with Den of Geek (opens in new tab), Dorn offered an update on the status of his proposed spin-off, which he calls The Worf Chronicles: “The idea that we have is a great idea, so what we’d like to do is use it to start a new franchise. I think if we populate [the series] with Star Trek franchise actors, I think that’s a good place to start. We’d be able to promote it through the conventions we already do, and the great thing about it would be that we’d own it. We’d be free to do what we wanted to do.”
“I think if we populate [the series] with Star Trek franchise actors, I think that’s a good place to start”, Dorn continued. “We’d be able to promote it through the conventions we already do, and the great thing about it would be that we’d own it. We’d be free to do what we wanted to do”. This is no doubt encouraging news for fans of the Klingon commander; in addition to expanding the Star Trek universe, a Worf-centred TV series would also give Dorn the opportunity to flesh out a character he clearly loves. Here’s hoping it comes to pass.

]]>The post Tributes to Leonard Nimoy appeared first on Game News.
]]>His co-stars in the classic original series of Star Trek, William Shatner and George Takei, both took to Twitter to express their feelings of loss.
Shatner posted, “I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love.”
Takei, meanwhile, quoted a line of dialogue from The Wrath Of Khan:

The inheritor of the role of Spock, Zachary Quinto, left a touching message on Instagram. “My heart is broken. I love you profoundly my dear friend. And I will miss you everyday. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”
Trek director JJ Abrams, meanwhile, posted a hand-written message: “What a man you were, what a life you lived. As funny and thoughtful and generous and loving as you were talented. You taught us all, at every encounter. We will miss and love you forever.”

Others figures from the world of Star Trek also shared their sadness.
Patrick Stewart tweeted, “I was lucky to spend many happy, inspiring hours with him. He won’t be forgotten.”
Stewart’s Next Generation co-star Jonathan Frakes simply stated, “RIP to the best First Officer.”
Gates McFadden described Nimoy as “the epitome of sci-fi icons, artist of intelligence and great depth”, while Marina Sirtis called him, “a true gentleman.”
Wil Wheaton thanked the actor, explaining, “We stood on your shoulders, and wouldn’t have had a galaxy to explore if you hadn’t been there, first. “ Wheaton has also written a blog on his feelings about Nimoy’s passing.
This was just a small part of a global outpouring of grief, of course.
Remarkably, The White House released the following statement from President Obama:
“Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his talent and his time. And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the center of Star Trek’s optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity’s future.
I loved Spock.
In 2007, I had the chance to meet Leonard in person. It was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for “Live long and prosper.” And after 83 years on this planet – and on his visits to many others – it’s clear Leonard Nimoy did just that. Michelle and I join his family, friends, and countless fans who miss him so dearly today.”
Obama has history when it comes to declaring his affinity for Spock; in 2012 he was pictured making the Vulcan salute when Nichelle Nichols visited the Oval Office.
Other well known figures who paid tribute include Trek fan Seth MacFarlane, (“Leonard Nimoy brought us one of the greatest, noblest characters in the history of American storytelling. Someone find the Genesis planet.”), Neil Gaiman (“A wonderful man”), Firefly star Nathan Fillion (“I have been, and always shall be, your fan”), cult hero Bruce Campbell (“He lived long and prospered”) and, in the following video message, astronauts Mike Fincke and Luca Parmitano.
But the comment that particularly resonated with us, as Star Trek fans who didn’t know Nimoy but – perhaps like you – somehow, felt that we did, came from novelist John Scalzi.
“If you’re having trouble understanding the grief over Leonard Nimoy’s passing, here it is: every geek just lost their favorite grandparent.”

]]>The post Star Trek Legend Leonard Nimoy Dies appeared first on Game News.
]]>The New York Times reports that Nimoy passed away Friday morning at his Bel Air home in Los Angeles. He was 83. His wife Susan Bay Nimoy has confirmed that the cause of death was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the condition that had led to him being hospitalised earlier this week.
Nimoy first appeared as Spock in “The Cage”, the 1965 pilot episode of Star Trek. He played the Enterprise’s half-human, half-Vulcan first officer for three seasons between 1966 and 1969, returning to the role for the mid-’70s animated series and then in 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He went on to appear in five more Star Trek movies between 1982 and 1992 as well as Star Trek: The Next Generation and reprised the role of Spock in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013).
Nimoy became one of the defining icons of Star Trek and science fiction, his sincere, layered, endlessly intriguing performance as the stoic Vulcan enshrining him as part of 20th Century pop culture.

Beyond the 23rd Century Nimoy enjoyed starring roles in a wide variety of TV series. He memorably played master of disguise Paris in Mission: Impossible and, more recently, played the enigmatic William Bell in Fringe. As a director he helmed Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (1984) and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1987), as well as 1987’s mainstream hit Three Men And A Baby.
Nimoy was also an accomplished photographer and poet.
“I’ve had 60 years of working in films and television,” Nimoy told SFX in 2010. “I’m very grateful for all the great opportunities that I’ve had and all the people that I’ve met, the people I’ve worked with. And the fans have been wonderful to me. They’re greatly supportive.
“People very often say to me that Star Trek and Mr Spock was a very positive influence in their lives. Many, many people have told me that they’ve gone into the sciences because of Star Trek and Mr. Spock and made a career in science. It’s a very heartwarming experience.”
In the words of Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan, we shall “remember”.
