‘Into Darkness’… Abrams admits it’s “odd”. “But my favourite thing about it was the first week it was out there, the fans were going ‘ Star Trek Into What? I don’t understand it. It’s stupid’,” he wryly remembers. But a couple of weeks later, it had stuck. What’s more, it fits.

“It definitely feels like the title’s appropriate,” he adds. “This is a story about these characters being challenged and tested and taken to a place that’s about sacrifice and life and death…” The words Into Darkness also leave room for ambiguity. “I remember there was a movie, An Innocent Man [ 1989 ], and I was like, doesn’t that kinda ruin everything?!?” he laughs.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens in the UK on 9 May 2013.

J.J. Abrams has shared a few more tidbits concerning forthcoming sequel Star Trek Into Darkness , singling Benedict Cumberbatch out for particular praise, without giving anything more away about his character.

“I just can’t wait for people to see the movie,” says Abrams. “Benedict is unbelievable. It’s a tall order, coming into that movie, because the crew of the Enterprise – that cast – is so damn good and they’re wonderful to work with and they’re all good hearts.

“So, to come into that group, as he did, as Alice Eve did and as Peter Weller did, and be one of the family was something that I was doubtful could happen. And he completely did it. I not only love him in the movie, but I love him, as a human being. He’s an amazing guy. I can’t wait for people to see the movie and experience what he’s done.”

Praise indeed. So what else can audiences expect from Abrams’ second bite of the cherry? Well from the sounds of things, the answer to that is scale.

“It’s a far bigger movie,” says Abrams. “What I’m still grappling with and learning how to do is to be looking and thinking cinematically, having come from television. A lot of that is about keeping all that stuff in frame and understanding composition.

“There were things I wish I had done on the first movie, that I got a chance to do this time. There were shots I wished I’d gotten, that I never got a chance to get, so it was fun to get that chance this time. But, there are no gimmicky things that I’m aware of, that I’m imposing or forcing down an audience’s throat.”

Star Trek Into Darkness opens in the UK on 17 May 2013.

And it feels like it’s now shifting up a further gear, with the report that JJ Abrams is about to offer the lead villain role to Benicio Del Toro.

The usually reliable Variety has gleaned this info from ‘sources close to the the project,’ but unsurprisingly for a JJ movie, details are being kept tightly under wraps.

Things have been a little quite for Del Toro recently, with his last memorable role occurring in 2008’s Che two-parter (we’re blocking The Wolfman from our memories), but he has recently finished work on Oliver Stone’s Savages .

It’d be great to see Del Toro on ‘big bad’ duties for what’s guaranteed to be a huge event picture, as he has the right blend of feral intensity and menacing charisma.

The untitled sequel is set to go into production in early 2012, with all of the key cast returning.
