Star Trek: Discovery season 3 already has one big underlying mystery, but it’s slowly introducing another (perhaps more immediate) head-scratcher to keep fans compelled week-to-week.

Warning: spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery season 3 follow…

The leap into the 32nd Century may be headline-grabbing news as Star Trek boldly goes where it’s never gone before but, inevitably, there must come a crash landing. Discovery’s dive into the icy depths of The Colony not only put the crew in peril, it seems to have adversely affected one of its most notable deck engineers, Lieutenant Detmer.

The part-cybernetic officer was perhaps hit hardest as the crew brushed themselves down and made their way back to active duty. But what happened? Is it PTSD? Or something that could, perhaps, tie Detmer into a returning Big Bad.

Whatever has happened to Detmer, it’s clear that something isn’t right. She ignores Culber in the sickbay and is generally framed as being not in complete control. Watch as she leaves the bridge for the first time; her movement is stilted and almost robotic. Has someone hacked into her cybernetic implant and started pulling some (robo) strings? Quite possibly…

Enter: Control. Section 31’s Control risk assessment system eventually went rogue through the course of season 2 and ended up attaching itself to Leland. The AI sought Sphere data and also went all HAL by murdering Section 31 crew members and also possessing Airiam. So, Star Trek: Discovery certainly has previous for AI hostile takeovers.

The first clue as to Detmer’s condition comes, handily, before the episode even starts. The “Previously On” segment makes pointed reference to Georgiou’s defeat of the Control-controlled Leland (that’s a mouthful, let’s just call it Control-Leland from hereon out).

While Control-Leland may have been stopped by Michelle Yeoh’s ass-kicking Mirror Emperor, there are scattered blue molecules that form a puddle around his shattered husk of a body. Even in death, there’s certainly scope for an infinitesimal amount of Control to be hanging around on the Starfleet ship, especially given as it was contained in the spore drive’s reaction cube.

Fast forward several hundred years to the beginning of the second episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 3 and it’s lights out – both on the ship and for the unconscious crew. Once they come to, however, it’s the first sighting of Saru that could tip us off to something particularly interesting moving forward.

By his downed body are a series of blueish particles bouncing around. That could be nothing, but given that the show was making a big song and dance about Leyland’s death just minutes ago, it’s curious timing. The two images also look pretty similar with each figure lying on their left-hand side. Could zooming through the wormhole also have caused an inadvertent escape for Control?

It’s also probably no coincidence that the big ticking-clock of the episode – nightfall and the ice that’s slowly crushing the grounded Discovery – mirrors what Detmer is likely going through.

The ice is described by bandit Zaher (Jake Weber) as “parasitic.” It’ll connect to its host and inevitably destroy it. That’s a none-too-subtle reflection of Detmer’s current situation.

By the episode’s end, she is, admittedly, happy to see Michael show up on-screen, presumably having wrestled back full control of whatever is affecting her. But this is something that is likely going to run across a chunk of the third season.

While The Burn – the apocalyptic event that put a pause on galaxy-wide warp travel – and the surroundings of the 3100s may intrigue many, this feels like the start of a mystery that’s going to bubble away for a few weeks before potentially bringing back a Big Bad – and dramatically changing one of the show’s most beloved characters.

All caught up on Discovery? Here are 7 New Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple Plus, and HBO Max movies and shows to watch this weekend.

With the end in sight, Star Trek Discovery season 2 (opens in new tab) stops messing around and gets down to business with a revelatory episode about the Star Trek Discovery Red Angel (opens in new tab), which moves the story forward, but leaves more than a few plot holes in its wake. The Red Angel is full to the brim with shocking revelations and a shining performance from Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham, but the central plot leaves much to be desired in terms of logic – let’s hope the show can straighten everything out before the finale! With some story spoilers from this point on, here’s our verdict on Star Trek Discovery season 2, episode 10.

The Red Angel starts with a goodbye to Airiam (Hannah Cheesman), which, like most of episode 9 (opens in new tab), is effective, but feels a little out of place given we didn’t even get such a significant sendoff for Culber (Wilson Cruz) in Star Trek Discovery season 1 (opens in new tab). Once everyone’s dried their eyes, they get down to the business of trying to figure out who or what the Red Angel is with the ‘help’ of Section 31, and less than 10 minutes into the episode, the bomb is dropped that the Red Angel is in fact future Burnham. Armed with the knowledge that the time travelling Red Angel is someone they know and trust, and is clearly trying to stop the apocalypse that Spock (Ethan Peck) has foreseen, no one wonders whether they should just let her get on with it, and instead devises a clever plan to capture the Red Angel. Yeah, that makes sense.

Timey wimey nonsense

An image from Star Trek Discovery season 2, episode 10 - The Red Angel

There’s lots of problems with this course of action, not least of which the time travel element. If the Red Angel is indeed future Burnham, then wouldn’t she be aware of any plot to capture her in the past? Maybe, but honestly, time travel conundrums come in all shapes and sizes in sci-fi storytelling and the only thing they all have in common is that none of them make any sense. Ignoring the headache-inducing implications of time travel, the Discovery crew plow full steam ahead with trying to capture the Red Angel, so they can… ask her what’s going on. It feels like a pretty extreme course of action given how dangerous messing with time travel can be, not to mention the fact that the Discovery crew realise the only way to force the Red Angel into their trap is to threaten Burnham’s life. Cue a hilariously dangerous and nonsensical mission!

Every Star Trek Discovery Easter egg (opens in new tab) and hidden reference you might have missed

It’s not all bad though. While episode 10’s main plot leaves a lot to be desired (and more than a few plot holes), everything around it is still Star Trek Discovery-levels of excellent. Anyone who’s still not sure about Martin-Green in the lead role (anyone?) will surely be convinced by her performance in The Red Angel, which is some of the best acting seen on the small or big screen in recent years. Whether it’s her subdued grief and understanding directed at Tyler (Shazad Latif) after Airiam’s funeral, or the defeating rage she attacks Leland (Alan van Sprang) with after he reveals his role in her parent’s death, this episode reminds us why Burnham is at the center of things. Plus, the continued banter with her brother, Spock, is still one of my favourite things about the new season, offering moments of genuine humour amongst all the doom and gloom of the on-coming apocalypse.

Haunted by the past

An image from Star Trek Discovery season 2, episode 10 - The Red Angel

Sadly, Burnham seems to be one of the few original Star Trek Discovery characters who is thriving in the second season. Culber is still floating around, somehow involved in missions while not actually being back on active duty. Tyler doesn’t really have a role separate from his relationship with Burnham (which does the character a great disservice considering his epic role in the first season). And Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) continues her weird, so-far unexplained character change from cold-blooded murderer/dictator to caring mother-like figure. While fans rightly rejoiced about the return of these characters which made the first season so good, we’re now ten episodes into season 2 and it’s looking like the show doesn’t really know what to do with them. There’s still time for this to change (we’ve got four episodes of season 2 left), but if Georgiou’s change of heart is never explained, Tyler remains merely a love interest, and Culber’s story continues in limbo, it will be a disappointing end for some of the best TV characters (opens in new tab) of all time.

Let’s not sugar coat it, The Red Angel is a middeling Star Trek Discovery episode at best, and it’s looking like, despite a strong start, the second season is struggling to live up to the dizzying heights of its debut. But one thing episode 10 does do is drastically move things forward and end on a huge cliffhanger, which will surely keep the momentum going. Heading into the final four episodes of the season, this can only be a good thing and while there’s a lot that doesn’t make sense about this episode, that’s time travel for you, right? If you can’t suspend your belief for the length of this episode, you probably shouldn’t be watching a Star Trek show, so while we’ve come to expect better from Discovery, episode 10 is hardly a travesty. Plus, if I haven’t already said it enough, Martin-Green is the bomb!

Don’t miss any of the other best new TV shows (opens in new tab) with our breakdown of the top series coming soon.

You can finally watch the Star Trek Discovery Short Treks on Netflix UK! The only trick is finding them, since Netflix decided to be fancy instead of just sticking the Short Treks in their own entry. Don’t let that discourage you from watching the shorts – especially since they’ll give you some nice context as you head into Star Trek Discovery season 2 (opens in new tab) – as it’s still quite easy to pull them up.

With that in mind, here are some illustrated instructions on how to find Star Trek Discovery Short Treks. Unfortunately they don’t apply for the US version of Netflix, because Star Trek Discovery is exclusively available on CBS All Access in the States. You could always check out our guide to the best VPN for Netflix (opens in new tab) if you’d rather fib to Netflix about your location than pay for another streaming service subscription.

First, pull up the same Star Trek Discovery entry you use to watch the show. You may need to search for it if Netflix’s all-knowing algorithms have shuffled Star Trek Discovery off your front page. Don’t worry if these images look a little different from what you’re seeing; Netflix clients vary by platform but the overall instructions should still apply.

Next, move your cursor down until you see several tabs that say “Overview”, “Episodes”, “Trailers & More”, and so on. Select “Trailers & More”.

Scroll to the right past all the trailers for Star Trek Discovery season 1 (opens in new tab) and the second season, and you’ll finally find the shorts. They should be presented in the same order they were released: Runaway, Calypso, The Brightest Star, and finally Escape Artist. Now you can watch them like you would any other episode.

That’s all there is to it! Hopefully the four Star Trek Discovery Short Treks give you enough spacefaring adventures to enjoy while you wait for the next full episode.

Make sure you don’t miss out on any little details with our guide to Star Trek Discovery Easter eggs (opens in new tab) and here’s how to watch Star Trek Discovery online (opens in new tab) wherever you are the world.

It’s been spoken about in whispers for a while, but it’s now official: a Michelle Yeoh Star Trek Discovery spin-off has been confirmed. The actress (who plays Mirrorverse Georgiou, lest we forget), will still appear in the main series, including Star Trek Discovery season 2 (opens in new tab) – and it’s there where we’ll see the foundations being laid for the new Star Trek TV show.

As reported by Deadline (opens in new tab), the as-yet-unnamed Star Trek Discovery spin-off will feature Yeoh’s Mirrorverse Georgiou fully entrenched in the shadowy corridors of Section 31, a covert ops unit that has been around for over 20 years in Star Trek. It’s previously taken part in assassinations and even genocide, all for the sake of the supposed greater good.

Basically, Section 31 has got the official power to get its hands dirty and do things that the Starfleet higher-ups wouldn’t dream of doing. Think Mission: Impossible in space with a dash of Splinter Cell and you’re probably on the right track.

Yeoh, for her part, is immensely excited to continue her Star Trek journey, saying: “I’m so excited to continue telling these rich Star Trek stories. Being a part of this Universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no woman has ever gone before!’”

If you’re sitting here worried that Yeoh – undoubtedly one of the highlights of Star Trek Discovery season 1 (opens in new tab) in both her original and Mirrorverse roles – would take a back seat in the main series then you put those fears to rest: Yeoh is going to be part of future Star Trek Discovery seasons, according to Deadline.

With that, Star Trek Discovery season 2, and the small matter of a Captain Picard spin-off (opens in new tab) all taking shape, it’s clear that Star Trek has eyes on taking over the universe once again. Make it so, Yeoh. Make it so.

I think there’s officially now too many great new TV shows (opens in new tab) on the way – so be sure to note down which ones you want to binge before anything else.

Welp. Star Trek Discovery (opens in new tab) episode 13 was a wild ride. At the risk of sounding like a broken record every week: Watch. This. Show. Seriously. For those of you who haven’t caught up (or haven’t even boarded the Discovery yet, for shame!) then there are big spoilers in the Twitter reactions below. So make like a parallel universe and split.

Where do I start? Mirror Lorca and Mirror Stamets both seemingly died (as did the Emperor); we got one of the best hand-to-hand fistfights this side of Daredevil and – here’s the kicker – the USS Discovery made it home… 9 months late. Yes, the Klingons have won the war. All is lost, for now…

Mirror Lorca falls

Star Trek Discovery’s capacity to surprise every week is quite remarkable. Not only did Mirror Lorca die (I think?), he did so in spectacular fashion: he fell into a giant star and, before that, was impaled by Emperor Georgiou in a scene resembling her own mirror self’s death. Poetic..

Time for change

This episode almost acted as a season finale and soft reboot all wrapped into one – and we’ve still got two episodes left! Good thing, too. The dilemma that reared its ugly head at the end of the episode won’t go away easily: the Discovery returned to its own universe, only to be met by news that they’d arrived home 9 months after they left and that the Klingons have won the war. For Voq’s sake.

Star Trek Discovery (opens in new tab) continues to be one of the most engaging shows going right now. The giant watercooler that is the internet keeps bubbling over with discussion, ‘Did you see that?’ moments and even some reactions that, if you aren’t watching already, will make you want to binge like there’s no tomorrow. Mirror Lorca

Did you see it coming? I didn’t, that’s for sure. The episode teased a few things early on – Lorca referring to Michael as ‘You’ was a little weird in hindsight – but the 36-minute episode, while slightly shorter than most would want, ended with a bang that will reverberate for some time to come. Paul is a fun guy

Well, one Paul is at least. The Mirror Stamets, who we got to meet properly this week, probably has a few spore jump-themed tricks up his sleeve. Still, at least our Paul got to have a proper goodbye with his good doctor. D’aww.

Disappointed if Stamets doesn’t end up more mushroom than man.22 January 2018

Isn’t this strange? There is all this great acting, fantastic twists, and all those nuances going on – and all I can think is “… all I want to know is if there is a chance for Stamets and Culber?” What did you do with my emotions @StarTrekRoom? #StarTrekDiscovery22 January 2018

Voq? Ash? Voq? Ash…?

Which is it? Not gonna lie, I’m a little confused. As it turns out, so is half of the internet – so that’s reassuring. L’Rell seemed none too happy with how her planned surgery went down though. Ash is still there, though. That’s something to Klingon to, right?

Only thing I’m confused about… is Voq dead? Is Tyler dead? Both? #StarTrekDiscovery22 January 2018

I’m confused. Who’s Voq again (from the original universe)? Damn these Klingons! I can’t remember their freaking names.22 January 2018

Discovery’s Dany

Giving the Mother of Dragons etc etc etc a run for her money in this episode was Emperor Georgiou. Not only does she get a roll call of honours to make Dany’s look positively rubbish, she also took out half-a-dozen people in one go. Killer. That’s without even mentioning, in the Mirror Universe, she takes Sarek’s role as adoptive parent.

I loved this episode. Even though we’ve had the Lorca reveal, the idea of affection between Burnham & Evil Geogieau was awesome, & I didn’t expect Burnham to bring her into her confidence.22 January 2018

Ganglia on toast, anyone?

Though the episode, rightly, focused on the breakdown in relationships and who is who, we  also got some levity. By levity I, of course, mean Michael chowing down on some fear ganglia. Mmm, chewy.

Hey, Star Trek Discovery (opens in new tab) viewer: welcome aboard the USS OhGodDidThatJustHappen. This week’s episode – The Wolf Inside (opens in new tab) – dished out some big reveals, answering many of the big questions we had from last week’s show (opens in new tab), and from the first half of the season. Spoilers follow, obviously.

Yes, Ash Tyler is indeed the Klingon Voq; yes, the Emperor is a megalomaniacal version of Captain Georgiou; yes, confident, assertive Tilly is a far better character than nervous Tilly. These things are all confirmed. But the episode still leaves us with plenty of questions, which are likely to be unpicked by forthcoming episodes of the show. These are they…

1. Is Mirror Stamets evil? And is he similarly trapped in the Mycelial network?

So, we see that Mirror Stamets is inside the Mycelial network along with regular Stamets. His greeting appears loaded with passive aggression, but we don’t know for certain that he’s actually evil. We can assume that the crossing over of universes similarly incapacitated Mirror Stamets on board the Terran version of Discovery, and that he has ended up inside the network too. The pair appear trapped, but this seems very likely to be the thing that will get the two versions of Discovery back to their respective universes.

Problem is, the two Stamets’ will likely need to cooperate if they’re to achieve this, but how will that happen if one is evil and the other good? Perhaps they’re both men of pure science, which will override any potential moral alignment. Perhaps not, and we’ll see some kind of awesome fist-fight in the Mycelial network. And, of note, why did Tilly wait until now to attempt her cure of Stamets? Couldn’t she have done that in the last episode? This one seems like a bit of artistic license, although you could argue that it has taken her a while to adjust to the Terran universe, and she’s not only just had time to think of it, but she’s also recently grown the confidence to suggest it.

2. Why is Saru on board the Discovery, even as a slave? And why didn’t Burnham tell Saru about his mirror self?

Given the Terran’s hatred of other species, and their contempt for anyone who dares defy the Emperor or chain of command, it seems puzzling that they’d keep Saru on board the ISS Discovery. Even if he’s a slave, he’s still an alien species. Perhaps they keep him around for his Kelpien sense of threat… that would be a particularly useful asset in a universe filled with people attempting to stab you in the back. Saru’s threat ganglia might have saved Terran Burnham’s life a few times as others attempted to assassinate her.

Still, for someone as hardline as Terran Burnham, it seems odd she’s tolerate alien presence at all. The other question is: why didn’t Burnham mention his presence to the real Saru? Perhaps, given their history of Burnham belittling Saru, she didn’t want to tell him how low his mirror version had been forced to sink. It was a kindness.

3. When did Burnham get a chance to message her ‘Tyler transport’ plan to the Discovery?

This all happens so fast, it’s tricky to tell whether the plan Burnham formulates to detain Tyler (or is it Voq from now on?) is a plot hole or a narrative convenience. She doesn’t discover his true identity until he reveals himself (steady on) in her quarters, and from there he’s immediately dragged to the transporter room for execution. Burnham appears to simply follow him in, as a sign of strength to demonstrate that she isn’t flustered. However, this leaves the question: how does she communicate this to the Discovery? Including his exact coordinates after teleporting? It’s a weird one.

Maybe she doesn’t go directly to the transporter room, and nips back into her quarters to make the call. It seems like an awkward process to create the secure connection, but it’s technically possible. Maybe the Discovery is trailing the Shenzhou and they simply detect Tyler’s lifesign and beams him aboard once he’s in space, but that wouldn’t explain how they know he’s Voq. But wouldn’t the crew of the Shenzhou notice he’d been teleported elsewhere? Perhaps we’re meant to fill in the blanks for ourselves here, but it requires more than a little suspension of disbelief. The reveal of what Burnham has done, however, is more than worth the vagaries.

4. Why did Burnham have Lorca sent to the bridge at the end?

This feels a little inconsistent too. Given that Lorca is the highest value prisoner in the galaxy, and she was so protective of him when they first arrived on the ISS Shenzhou (because, she says, his bounty is so high) it seems very strange that she’d just tell one of her crew to fetch him. And why bring him to the bridge? The explanation is that she’s panicking because of the attack on the resistance but, given how precisely she acted when the man she ‘loved’ turned out to be an arch enemy, this seems hugely out of character.

More than that, surely the Emperor – who acknowledges the presence of Lorca – will find it a little odd that he’s onboard the bridge of the Starship, in full view of her. Note that Lorca, in the scene before, suggests they stay aboard the Shenzhou, despite having all they need to escape. Perhaps he’s just being careful, but perhaps he has ulterior motives – after all, some theories suggest he’s actually Terran Lorca, and not the one from the Starfleet universe.

5. Yes, why can’t they see the Emperor’s ship?

It seems odd that the Shenzhou isn’t able to see or detect the Emperor’s ship, as she bombards the rebel bases. Sure, active cloaking and cloaking tech clearly exists in the Terran universe, but you’d think Terran vessels would be able to keep track of each other. Maybe the Emperor is a special exception, and she’s off the grid because she wants to prevent any assassination attempts. That’d make sense. Or maybe it’s something to do with Klingon cloaking tech. It’s a big leap, but what if she somehow managed to acquire the data that the USS Discovery brought through to the Mirror Universe? And has applied it to her own ship? That really does open up a whole can-factory of worms.

6. Is Burnham not Sarek’s adopted daughter? If not, who are her parents?

Given Mirror Sarek’s lack of acknowledgement of Burnham at the rebel base, it’s safe to assume he isn’t her adopted father in the Mirror universe. If so, who are her parents? Are we going to discover that Emperor Georgiou – who was always like a mother to Burnham in the regular universe – is her adopted mum? Now that would be delicious. Also of note, while we’re talking about Sarek. Love the goatee (a wonderful nod to Mirror Spock from the Original Series), but given how decent Sarek is in the regular universe, shouldn’t he be a bit of a bastard in the Mirror dimension? He seems like a nice chap.

7. Is Tyler completely gone? And is there a Mirror Tyler?

So, Tyler is Voq. Most have known that for a while, so the reveal comes as little surprise. For me, it’s well handled though and adds extra spice to the relationship between him and Burnham. Based on her reaction, it casts questions over whether or not she really loved him but… perhaps we’ll see her grief manifest in later episodes. However, it does beg the question: is Tyler completely gone now? The answer is most likely yes, as he was probably a mere ‘shell identity’ based on Voq’s research of the crew manifests after he was stranded post-Battle of the Binary stars.

There’s no doubt an Ash Tyler existed, but he’s almost certainly dead in the regular universe. And given that he was just a cover for Voq and L’Rell to infiltrate Discovery, he’s probably gone for good. Unless… they come across Mirror Tyler in the Terran universe. That might be a nice way to keep the character (and actor Shazad Latif) in the show for season 2, and to avoid completely crushing Burnham’s spirit. It’s a longshot, though, as Tyler is probably gone for good.
