A new Splinter Cell rumor claims that the next outing for Sam Fisher will be a stealth-powered open world game.

Tom Henderson, who previously shared a number of details about Battlefield 2042 ahead of its official announcement among numerous other leaks, briefly touched on the future of the Splinter Cell franchise. Rumors from October claimed that a new Splinter Cell was in early production at Ubisoft, but they didn’t include any more details about the game beyond it being a new mainline entry in the series.

Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell game that is in early development is currently scoped as a… You guessed it… Open World of sorts.”A more stealthy version of Assassin’s Creed””Similar to how Halo Infinite has done its Open World” pic.twitter.com/eqSzRplhu5December 8, 2021

Henderson specifically refers to the Splinter Cell as being “in early development,” so he’s likely talking about the same thing. He says it will be an “open world of sorts” and cites a few anonymous quotes, presumably from people who are close to the project, who compare the new Splinter Cell project to a stealthier version of Assassin’s Creed or similar to Halo Infinite’s own open-world approach.

While series protagonist Sam Fisher has continued to appear in spinoff games or via cameos in other Tom Clancy’s titles from Ubisoft, the last main entry in the franchise was 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist. That game took the franchise in a more action-heavy direction, which was controversial at the time, and online servers for its multiplayer mode are largely broken at this point (though you definitely won’t be banned for sending in support tickets about them).

If you’re from Ubisoft and are reading this, might we recommend our guides to the best stealth games and the best open world games to give you some extra inspiration?

A new game in the Splinter Cell series could finally be coming… to Oculus VR headsets. The Facebook-owned virtual reality company has reportedly signed deals with Ubisoft to bring exclusive versions of Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed to Oculus. While Assassin’s Creed has been going strong for more than a decade with appearances on scads of modern platforms, it would be the first new project for the Tom Clancy-verse stealth franchise since 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

Some VR games like Budget Cuts have already made a compelling example of how to handle stealth in virtual reality, which could give us some idea of what to expect from the new Splinter Cell project. Whatever it is, hopefully Ubisoft brings back Michael Ironside to do the voicework – he clearly showed he was up to it in that Ghost Recon Wildlands cameo (opens in new tab).

According to The Information (opens in new tab), Oculus is looking to lock down deals with major video game franchises to help drive interest in its range of VR headsets and encourage current users to spend more time with them. The company’s first headset, Oculus Rift, officially went on sale to the public in 2016 but still hasn’t achieved widespread adoption. However, the same report indicates that the new Oculus Quest headset – which is wireless and works on its own without the need for a separate PC or console – has blown past Oculus’ sales projections since launching in May.

Here’s how a Facebook spokesperson responded when I asked them if the company could confirm or deny the report: “The response to Oculus Quest and Rift S gaming have been incredible. We cannot comment on specific partnerships, but we will continue to focus on expanding our library and reaching broader gaming audiences for years to come.”

As cagey as you’d expect for an official response to this kind of report, but at least it isn’t a flat out denial. I wonder if this is what Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillmeot was talking about when he finally addressed the status of the Splinter Cell franchise earlier this year (opens in new tab)?

“Now there are some things and some people that are now looking at the brand; taking care of the brand,” Guillemot said. “At one point you will see something but I can’t say more than that.”

The new Splinter Cell could be a ways off, but you can start saving money for it now with our early Amazon Prime day game deals (opens in new tab).

It’s been six years since the last entry in Ubisoft’s acclaimed stealth franchise, Splinter Cells, and – as you might imagine – fans are starting to get impatient. We heard rumours last year of a new sequel in the works (opens in new tab), but that came and went without an announcement, while several Easter eggs in the likes of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey (opens in new tab) and The Division 2 (opens in new tab) appear to be nothing more than cheeky winks to the wider Ubiverse.

Now, in an interview with IGN (opens in new tab), Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has finally offered some clarity on what’s going on with the Tom Clancy IP and its lead character Sam Fischer, who was last seen bemoaning the death of the Metal Gear franchise (opens in new tab) in Ghost Recon: Wildlands (opens in new tab) in 2017.

“When you create a game, you have to make sure you will come with something that will be different enough from what you did before,” Guillemot told IGN, explaining that the “last time we did a Splinter Cell, we had lots of pressure from all the fans saying, ‘Don’t change it; don’t do this; don’t do that.’ So some of the teams were more anxious to work on the brand.”

Guillemot is, of course, referring to 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist (opens in new tab), which divided fans over its action-oriented direction and cinematic style compared to the stripped back stealth focus of its predecessors. Despite expressing caution at returning to the franchise so hastily following that backlash however, Guillemot promises that Ubisoft hasn’t forgotten Sam Fischer outright.

“Now there are some things and some people that are now looking at the brand; taking care of the brand.” teased the CEO. “At one point you will see something but I can’t say more than that.” Could a new Splinter Cell be one of the unannounced E3 2019 games (opens in new tab) about to debut this summer? It’s unlikely, given that both the rumoured Watch Dogs 3 and Beyond Good & Evil 2 (opens in new tab) are both on Ubisoft’s plate right now, but don’t count out the return of Mr. Sam Fischer just yet…

Could Splinter Cell become one of the big new games of 2019 (opens in new tab) on the way this year? Watch the video below to discover the upcoming titles we’re most excited about right now.
