PS4 and PS Vita owners can start streaming from a library of backwards compatible titles in 2014, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told IGN this week. North American players will be the first to get access to the cloud of PS3 titles.

The streaming service built on Gaikai will launch with a decent selection of titles and expand over time, Yoshida said, much like Netflix. The games will be playable through PS4, PS Vita, and PS Vita TV, though Sony has no current plans to launch the latter in North America.

Yoshida said PS3 streaming will likely launch in Europe after the North American service gets up and running. He didn’t specify how the games will be accessed; i.e., for previous owners, available for purchase a la carte, or as part of an all-in-one subscription like PlayStation Plus.

The PS Vita usually gets a lot of love at Sony’s GamesCom press event, and this year, among games announced for platform, the system has seen a uniform price cut to $199/€199 that’s effective tomorrow. And a Sony rep also said that the prices of memory cards for the handheld will be decreased significantly.

The system’s price was one of its stronger points at launch, and this price cut likely just makes the portable a more attractive package. Meanwhile, many gamers have been annoyed at the prices for memory cards, so it’s great to hear that those proprietary devices are finally going to be cheaper. But the question is just how much lower the new price will be. We’ll obviously be keeping our eyes on those memory cards for whenever those go on sale.

Does this inspire any of you readers to finally get a Vita? Or is the price still too much?

Your PS4 can play games, sure, but don’t you want it to simulate the feel of dozens of miniature robots squirming around within your grip? Well, you’re in luck (also very strange), because Sony announced this week that the PlayRoom augmented reality suite will come included with every console.

PlayRoom uses the PlayStation Camera combined with the DualShock 4’s light bar, gyro sensors, and touch screen to project a 3D interface over your image on the screen. From there, you can mess around with spherical helper bot Asobi, fill your controller and coat your floor with mini-bots, or even play a holographic game of board-bending air hockey against a friend.

PlayRoom looks like a suitably goofy array of tech demos to keep you amused between games. Just because it’s bundled with the console doesn’t mean you can play it out of the box–you’ll also need to buy a $60 PlayStation Camera separately.

The DualShock 4 is (almost) here

At Sonys PS4 (opens in new tab)-centric press conference today, Mark Cerny unveiled the final version of the controller for the PlayStation 4. Turns out, while some of the functionality appears to be the same as last weeks leaked photos of a dev kit controller, this true DualShock 4 is much sleeker and sexier than previously advertised.

Weve pored over the details that Sony has announced for the DualShock 4, and weve (figuratively) broken down the new controller piece by piece to figure out what it does. Read on for the first details

The Share button could change everything

So, turns out those little black buttons at the top of the PS4 controller (opens in new tab) aren’t the Start and Select buttons. One of those buttons is the Option button, which combines the functionality of Start and Select into one input. The other is the Share button, which stands to completely change the way you spread game content to your buddies.

With a press of this button, you can–on the fly–capture screens or video from the game youre playing, then upload them online. Judging from the new partnerships with Gaikai, youll also be able to upload your finest moments to Facebook, or stream them on Ustream, using this one simple button.

The analog sticks are concave

It seems that Sony has ditched the typical design of its PS2 and PS3 analog sticks, and is modifying their design to be concave. Its difficult to tell at a glance, but it appears that the analog sticks are also further apart in comparison to the PS3 controller. Thats good news for gamers with large hands and/or thumbs.

Other players can take the wheel

Amazingly, the PS4 controller will allow you to take over your friends controller remotely, using Gaikai technology. Say, for instance, youre stuck in a tricky segment of a level, and your friend online can easily clear it. Theoretically, youll now be able to temporarily lend them your controller inputs, so that they can take control and clear the segment for you without even being present.

The light bar will enhance your experience

The suspected motion-sensing bar at the top of the controller also lights up with three color LEDS, and though weve only seen it in a blue glow flavor thus far, Mark Cerny announced that the controller will help identify players. We interpret this as color coding for controllers in multiplayer. Imagine how simpler it will be to say Im blue, youre red instead of Im Player 3, youre Player 4 during intense party gaming. According to a Sony press release sent out after the show, it will also convey “useful information,” like blinking when you’re low on health.

The DualShock 4 has a built-in touchpad

That spiffy-looking rectangle in the middle of the controller isnt a screen–its a touchpad. During a real-time run through the Unreal 4 tech demo, Mark Cerny stated that he could move the camera using the touchpad. Surely there will be more functions for the touchpad, similar to the inventive ways developers use the PS Vitas back touchpad.

The shoulder buttons look pretty much the same

Youll be happy to know that the DualShock 4 has the familiar number of shoulder buttons: two on each side, four total. These look to be a bit more compact in size, with a sort of gradual triangular edge (similar to the general shape of a 360 controller). In another nod to Microsoft’s controller, the shoulder buttons have a slight outward curve for an easier grip.

It comes with a motion-sensing peripheral

That light bar at the top of the controller has a functionality we expected: motion controls. But it wouldnt work without a receiver–which is why it requires the PlayStation 4 Eye, a stereo/camera combo that you hook up to your TV. Cerny stated that when these two interact, the PS4 will be able to track 3D movement with an accurate sense of depth. With two cameras and four microphones inside, it sounds like the PS4 Eye can match (if not outperform) the Kinect’s capabilities.

The d-pad isnt different

Luckily, the leaked screens of the PS4 controller werent the final product. The easiest way to tell is the new d-pad, which retains the classic segmented-cross design that the DualShock series has always had. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

The face buttons are pleasantly familiar

Nothing too fancy here. The PlayStations classic four button layout of Square, Triangle, Circle, and uhX is back, and looks perfectly preserved. It seems the embossed cross behind the four buttons has spread: Instead of being restrained to a mere cross, it now covers the entirely of the d-pad and button faces.

Sony ended its work contract with SuperBot Entertainment, the developer of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, weeks after layoffs hit the studio. Kotaku reports SuperBot will go its own way as Sony’s Santa Monica Studio takes over work on PlayStation All-Stars and its DLC.

“Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that the working agreement with developer SuperBot Entertainment has amicably ended,” Sony said in a press release. “We have had a positive working relationship with this talented studio, and wish them the best of success in their next endeavor.”

SuperBot also confirmed the layoffs, saying this is “the beginning of the next chapter” of their future. That future will likely belong to an even smaller studio, however.

“We don’t have a reduction plan as of yet, however it is unlikely we can continue with our current work force for an extended period of time,” SuperBot director of operations David Yang told Kotaku. “We are still working things out and hope to continue on with as many of us as possible.”

If this story of ended Sony contracts and shrinking studios sounds familiar, it may be because almost the exact same thing happened to former contractor LightBox Interactive a few months after it released Starhawk.

You don’t have to be a high-paid analyst to see that the PS Vita is in a tough spot. You’ll find many stories headlined “3DS outsells PS Vita 46 to 1” or “3DS crushes Vita during Black Friday week.” Add to that the poor reception of some high profile recent releases, the negative news about Sony’s overall business (opens in new tab), and the heavy shadow cast by mobile gaming, and the Vita seems all but dead before its first year of international release comes to an end. But don’t worry, there’s still time for course correction, just not as much as Sony would like.

How can the Vita be saved? You’ve got to start with its most obvious flaw: the price. When Sony announced the $250/$300 price tag at E3 2011, the price drew applause for matching the 3DS’s. But by the time the Vita came to the US, the cheapest Vita was $80 more than the 3DS, and that price disparity has hurt it ever since.

The “charge less to sell more” strategy will work–and we’ve already seen it happen with the Vita. On November 22, many retailers cut a normally $250 Vita bundle down to $200, while Amazon slashed the price to $180. Though Sony didn’t exactly laud the move, the company did call out the promotion (opens in new tab) as a major source of Vita sales that week. Hopefully this was a sign of Sony testing some future, permanent price points for the portable, but the company needs to stop dilly-dallying.

The price cut needs to extend to games, too. $40 for a top of the line Vita game is a fair price, but $20-$30 would be a far better for the majority of its library. In a world with $1 apps and great mobile games under $10, $40 for almost any portable title is a stretch. The price on storage also needs to come down, given that a $60 16GB memory card is only good for about six or seven games.

And lowering the price of storage drops will make it even easier to download the free games offered on PlayStation Plus. The free games so far have been great, but Sony needs to keep that ball rolling, and it doesn’t even need to offer Vita games. In this day and age it’s hard to imagine there are many who would pay full price for PSP titles like Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, Riviera: The Promised Land, or Secret Agent Clank, but all would be quickly embraced as freebies. The same goes for the huge backlog of PSOne games on PSN. Throw Klonoa, Destruction Derby, or Crash Team Racing to Vita owners gratis and it’ll feel like manna from heaven instead of dusty leftovers.

Sony’s July buy-out of cloud gaming company Gaikai could be ready to bear fruit some time soon, if today’s relaunch of the Gaikai website is anything to go by. The redesigned website couldn’t be any more PlayStation-friendly if Kaz Hirai’s smiling face popped out of it upon loading. In 3D.

The cool blue glassy curves are pure Sony before you even get to the character artwork, but the latter hammers the point home with the force of a dinosaur-killing space rock. Uncharted, Killzone, God of War, LittleBigPlanet and Infamous all make an appearance in various areas of the site, alongside Metal Gear Rising: Revengance and what looks like it could be Call of Duty.

No word on exactly what form the Gaikai/Sony co-developments will take, but the site’s statement that “Gaikai will help SCE grow their ecosystem, empower developers with new capabilities, dramatically improve the reach of various content and bring breathtaking new entertainment experiences to end-users around the world” definitely adds fuel to the idea (opens in new tab) that Sony games might be heading to non-traditional formats not too far into the future.

Sony’s adorable Sackboy is back, bringing the “play, create, share” mantra into LittleBigPlanet PlayStation Vita, the fourth entry in the puzzle-platforming series. The intrepid, happy-go-lucky, walking ball of yarn fits in right at home on the new handheld; taking advantage of the PS Vita’s touch controls in a way that not only changes up gameplay, but also allows creative new minigames to be possible. Plus, custom level creation is more intuitive than ever.

Sackboy’s (or Sackgirl’s) new portable adventure takes him to Carnivalia, a fairground-themed planet where an evil Puppeteer and his Hollow minions are sucking all the joy and life out of the once-festive world. It’s a fairly simple tale of “sinister person wreaking havoc upon the world and Sackperson must save the day,” starring a cast of colorful and quirky characters. LBP Vita continues the tradition of having unique, interesting areas in its story mode that are paired with appropriately themed music which brings the handmade world and its inhabitants to life. Through short, fully-voiced cutscenes, you’ll get to know your new set of oddball friends whose eccentric personalities match the wacky environments that they reside in, including a Tron-like ’80s universe complete with camcorders and video tapes.

Watch the game in motion

These locations are a blast to explore, and when armed with power-ups such as the grappling hook and the Grabinator from LBP2, it makes platforming much more exciting. Not only can you play along with two to four players via local and online multiplayer, each world comes with a variety of minigames that give you a reason to return with others. Playing with friends has always been the highlight of LittleBigPlanet, and you’ll need their help if you intend to find every item.

Other than the multiplayer aspect, part of what makes the LittleBigPlanet series stand out–and the Vita version is no exception–is the incredible amount of detail in each area. Whether you’re swimming through Marianne’s Land of Odd, which is a blend of nature and discarded junk, or traipsing through the inner corridors of the Spooky Mansion, the levels are packed with creative platforming sections built out of common objects as well as collectible goodies that you can then use in Create Mode, the game’s powerful level editor.

What’s most impressive is that LBP Vita looks better on the handheld than its console counterparts, and controls better too. It’s rare that you find yourself on the wrong plane and have to wrestle with the controls to discern which one you should be in. And while our little Sackchum is still a bit floaty when he leaps, the stages are designed in such a way that whenever you mess up, it’s almost always entirely your fault.

The same can not be said about the touch controls, which lag behind the precision of an analog stick. But thankfully touch controls are used sparingly in the main story mode and never turn into a point of frustration. Several of the minigames do take advantage of the Vita’s touch screen, but it’s not nearly fast enough when you’re sharing half the Vita with a friend in a rousing game of air hockey. That said, smearing your fingerprints across the screen is useful when building levels at your own pace, be it coloring in a background or changing the dimensions of an object. It’s not required to use the touch controls, but it’s a handy alternative as well as intuitive when you want to use the screen’s shortcuts to select the right tools.

Ultimately it’s up to the community and their collective imagination to keep the game alive and thriving for years to come. It’s unfortunate that the several million levels that have been created on the PlayStation 3 can’t be played on the Vita, but your costumes are transferable. LBP Vita is an open sandbox for anyone who is willing to take the time to learn how everything works, this is a game that will continue to challenge you in many ways–not just with the creator and its massive list of tutorials. While the main story isn’t difficult, there’s an arcade with a collection of minigames (some more fun than others) that will put your skills–and the Vita’s various capabilities–to the test.

LittleBigPlanet PS Vita encapsulates what the system can do, and deserves a spot in your Vita library. Running through each level (even multiple times) is a charming, creative, and incredibly rewarding experience, regardless of whether it’s to beat your friend’s leaderboard score or if you’re simply going after every collectible for that satisfying “pop” sound. Even when you feel like you’ve exhausted all your minigame options, what you can create in the Imagisphere with the game’s powerful toolset is only limited by your imagination. As the narrator Stephen Fry says in the opening, “If ever there was a masterpiece that could be enhanced by a single swish of a paintbrush, then you are that paintbrush, and the painting is LittleBigPlanet.”

Sony has officiallyannounced (opens in new tab)the date when PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be hitting store shelves, along with some new information on what incentives they’re offering to people who pre-order the game.

First off, they announced that those who pre-order will gain access to a completely new set of costumes for each character, separate from those available in the game or downloadable as DLC. They haven’t unveiled those costumes yet, but they say they will soon.

They also announced the far more important bit of information: when we’ll actually be able to play it. They announced today that it will be dropping at retail on PS3 and Vita on October 23, 2012. They haven’t yet announced the official pricing, but they say that bit of info is also coming soon. Normally we’d assume the game would sell at the usual $59.99 on PS3 and $39.99/$49.99 on Vita, but this gives us a bit of hope that the price may come down.
