Director Sam Mendes has been promoting the latest Bond outing Spectre ahead of its US release this week, and although he’s previously reneged on his original plans to only direct one Bond film, the chances of that happening again are slim.

Speaking with Deadline (opens in new tab), he confirmed that “There is a sense of completeness that wasn’t there at the end of Skyfall, and that’s what makes this feel different. It feels like there’s a rightness to it, that I have finished a journey.”

“You cast a new actor and find a new director, and make something totally new. I can, off the top of my head, give you three or four ideas for where it could go next. They’re all daring and big. To me, the enemy is repetition and laziness, and the great danger is not challenging the preexisting format.”

“These are my two chapters of the Bond myth. Someone else is going to write a chapter or 10 or 50, because Bond is strong enough for that, and because there’s enough to play with. Daniel may absolutely turn around six months’ time and feel his energy renewed. Or he might say just the opposite. If he is as sensible as I think he is, he needs to go away and have some time to think and do another job that’s completely different, which he’s already doing with Othello.” Never say never, right? Spectre is now open in UK and US cinemas.

Skyfall opens in the UK imminently, and to tide you over another full-length trailer has been released.

This one doesn’t offer up much in the way of new clips, but does a decent enough job of shuffling the already released promo material into an impressive showcase.

If you look closely during the final montage, you can see frames snatched from new action beats. Although you might not want to look too closely, if you’re avoiding spoilers.

You’re advised to instead enjoy Javier Bardem’s sinister stylings as Silva, the villain of the piece. As a franchise baddie who’s smart, tough and ludicrously camp, he deserved to be savoured.

And Judi Dench’s M is in for a tough ride, with threatening computer messages forcing the MI6 ballbuster to ‘think on her sins’.

What convinced you to get on board a Bond film?

I think it’s always about the material in the script. When I read it, I felt ‘Wow, this is powerful!’

Of course, you have everything that you can expect in James Bond movies, but it has more than that. It’s very accomplished and powerful.

And then I talked to Sam and he gave me his ideas. I thought they were very good – brave, in some way.

And then there was Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench and Daniel, and then it’s like, ‘What the hell am I doing? Of course!’

Come on then, tell us a little bit about your character Silva. What’s his beef with Bond?

Jesus. So hard! It’s very difficult to talk about a movie that you cannot talk about, and also talk about a movie that you are doing!

Is he more of a cool, ruthless bastard or a screaming maniac?

Screaming maniac? What about a bit of everything?

Listen, many Bond villains have been beautifully made, and I’m the one to discover the fire.

Now it’s about pointing at that from different perspectives, bringing a different idea of that.

What kind of physical training did you have to do to prepare?

Very easy. White meat and fish on the grill. Vegetables. And gym. And sweat.

You’ve got blond hair in the film – how much input did you have into how Silva looked?

I cannot tell you what that blond hair is. Because… [shrugs mysteriously] Yes, I have some input in the way he looks and the way he talks. But it was Sam’s ideas that I wanted to follow and go with.

Is it difficult to balance more artistic and commercial work?

Really commercial work – I’ve only done two movies, Eat Pray Love and this one. I’m kind of new in this territory.

But I don’t see the difference, as long as you more or less carefully choose.

And you may be wrong. I’ve been wrong many times. I’ve done very bad movies. But the good news is that I choose them for the right reasons and I felt good doing it, I was proud doing it, and then the movie was a disaster or my performance was a disaster. But I believed in it.

Skyfall will be exploding into cinemas in a matter of weeks and there could be more good news for fans of Daniel Craig’s Bond, with the fansite MI6 (opens in new tab) reporting that the star has signed on for a further two films.

The site claims that Craig is already contracted to appear in Bond 24 and Bond 25, which would bring him up to five films in total. That would see him become the third longest-serving Bond, behind Roger Moore and Sean Connery on seven each.

Craig has often suggested that he intends to stick with the role as a long-term thing, and clearly takes the responsibility of portraying 007 very seriously.

“Bond movies live or die on their popularity,” he told Esquire earlier this year. “They force you to care about what people think. And I’m involved [ in the films ] on a very deep level. I have it in my mind all the time.”

From the sounds of things, he’ll have international terrorists and impossibly glamourous women running around his brain for a good while to come. In the shorter term, Skyfall opens in the UK on 26 October 2012.
