Sea of Thieves is collaborating with Disney to create a whole new story.

Announced during today’s Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase during the busy E3 2021 week, Sea of Thieves has been revealed to be partnering with Disney to introduce a number of characters from Pirates of the Caribbean including Captain Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones, and more.

The new story is titled ‘A Pirate’s Life’ and will find players embarking on a brand new journey that will also be free to all players as part of the game’s Season 3 update that lands on June 22. There will be 5 Tall Tales to embark on throughout the seas and will find players sailing alongside Jack Sparrow himself as they visit new locations and battle new enemies.

Some of these new enemies are Sirens lurking in the oceans, Phantoms, and Ocean Crawlers. More details on what to expect from Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life will be revealed nearer the time, for now, the official website shows off the developer’s excitement to collaborate with Disney.

Sea of Thieves has recently started a new progression system along with a seasonal update structure. Season 2 of the game launched back in April, and the upcoming Season 3 Pirates of the Caribbean-themed crossover will be the game’s biggest update since its anniversary update.

Sea of Thieves is also optimized for the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles that launched last year. While Xbox wishes it “had more supply,” those who do have the console are able to experience games that have been optimized for the console, making use of raytracing, high frames per second, and Quick Resume. There was also an FPS boost to over 70 Xbox One games last month.

Rare will no longer let Sea of Thieves players in Arena mode communicate with other crews via voice or text chat due to toxicity reports. This applies to the Arena mode’s Sea Dog Tavern as well as crews sailing out on the open sea.

The change will come with the introduction of Sea of Thieves Season One tomorrow, which will also see Rare stepping away from further Arena development in general. Apparently, players are a lot meaner in the PvP-focused Arena mode than the main Adventure mode, which itself has a pretty active PvP community.

In the announcement (opens in new tab), Rare shared a startling statistic: “In a given month, just over half of toxicity reports that hit our Customer Service team come from the Arena, despite Arena accounting for around 3% of overall playtime in Sea of Thieves.”

Rare says the move is designed to make Arena mode “a more welcoming” experience, and honestly, it’s a good place to start. For what other reason would opposing crews in an exclusively PvP environment want to communicate with each other than to relentlessly talk crap?

We’ll still be able to use emotes and pre-canned messages from the chat wheel to communicate with other crews, and of course voice and text chat will stick around for in-crew talk, but going forward we’ll be spared from hearing what would surely be spirited, yet polite, constructive criticism from enemy ships.

Sea of Thieves’ first season will usher in a new era of bigger, three-month updates with smaller monthly updates in-between. Coming in season one is a new progression system, a battle pass, new rewards, and a bunch more.

Here are some essential Sea of Thieves tips if you’re just starting out.

Sea of Thieves‘ Season One update is going live Thursday, January 28, Rare has announced. You can also see the new home screen up top and in the announcement tweet below.

Rare revealed last month that Sea of Thieves would be ditching its long-held monthly update structure for new seasonal content drops and a battle pass system. As part of this transition, the PvP Arena mode won’t be getting any new content, though it’ll still be available to play for the foreseeable future. We aren’t sure just yet how much the battle pass – er, Plunder Pass – will cost, but it’ll likely fall roughly in line with battle passes for other games.

Like most online games, the seasons will launch every three months and introduce “a new experience or way of play,” various live events, tons of new rewards, quality-of-life updates, Emporium updates, and Twitch drops. Season One will also usher in a new progression system where, by “engaging in all aspects of the pirate’s life,” you earn rewards and rank through 100 levels of Pirate Renown. So basically, there’s a clearer sense of progression in the usual day-to-day grind.

Rare didn’t say anything new about Season One in the release date announcement, but we’ve heard it adds a new voyage type at the Merchant Alliance that takes players to a lost shipwreck in search of treasure, which sounds about par for the course. Personally, I can’t wait to see some of the new baddies and world events coming in Season One and later updates, because I still can’t imagine anything more terrifying than being pulled underwater by a Kraken.

If you’re still trying to find your sea legs, don’t miss out on these essential Sea of Thieves tips for beginners and seasoned pirates alike.

For many, Rare just announced its most important Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab) update: dogs. Woofing, circling, huggable good boys and girls. That’s right – not only can you pet the dogs, you can hug them. It might not be the most piratey thing to do, but what kind of monster could resist?

You can already have parrots, cats, and monkeys for pets, and I can only imagine dogs were feeling awfully left-out until now. Now you can finally add a lovable dog to your crew, likely to the chagrin of your ship’s cat. But watch your step and look out for discolored puddles, as pirate dogs don’t come potty trained. You can check out some in-game doggy antics over at IGN’s Gamescom presentation (opens in new tab)

🐶 Woof woof! Just announced at #gamescom2020, good boys and girls of various breeds will be able to join you on the Sea of Thieves for scritches and hugs with our next content update! Please act surprised. pic.twitter.com/ZGOhBRkYBhAugust 28, 2020

While arguably the most exciting, dogs aren’t the only addition in Sea of Thieves’ September update. There’s also a new and permanent voyage being added for Gold Hoarders, which Rare says we’ll hear more about at a later date.

The studio also says they’ll continue to add new features, quality of life improvements, and bug fixes every month, with a focus on expanding the “range and visibility” of live events. “Our aim is to have something unique for players to do throughout the month and not just looking towards the next monthly update,” executive producer Joe Neate said. Mind, you still have until September 30 to get new loot and titles from the Summer of Sea of Thieves event (opens in new tab).

The latest crossover event coming to Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab) is none other than the Fightin’ Frogs ship set, inspired by the new Battletoads remake (opens in new tab). You can get your hands on the new amphibious ship set tomorrow, August 20, to mark the release of the new Battletoads.

There is a catch though – you’ll need to play through Act One of the remake in order to get your Battletoads ship set. It sounds like that deal’s ongoing, as Rare says you can finish the mission and earn your reward “any time.”

Fortunately, Battletoads is launching on Xbox Game Pass, so subscribers won’t need to make a separate purchase, but that does mean everyone else will need to fork up for the special gear cosmetics.

The Battletoads return tomorrow, August 20th, courtesy of @dlalastudios! To celebrate, anyone who finishes Act One of the raucous multi-genre adventure, at any time, will be able to festoon their ship with a family of fighting frogs! Or are they toads? We hear it’s a wart thing. pic.twitter.com/1BRKaglxHEAugust 19, 2020

Like most ship sets, the Battletoads collection includes themed sails, cannons, capstan, figurehead, flag, hull, and wheel. As you might expect, it makes your ship very green, but it’ll be your opponents who will turn green with envy when they see three giant toads clinging to the front of your ship.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has brought one of its studio’s IPs into the high seas – the most recent example was a State of Decay ship set, but there’s also been Halo-inspired and Gears 5-inspired Sea of Thieves ship sets. Personally, the only thing cooler than a frog ship would be a turtle ship, which I could only see happening if Microsoft releases an exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game.

For Sea of Thieves players, a skull cloud appearing in the sky means one of two things. For the combat-averse, it means avoid the area, just totally steer clear. But for the more daring, gold-motivated pirates, a skull means it’s time to fight for a massive bounty. Each skull cloud hangs over a fortress, which hosts the Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab) raids. Whether you’re wondering how many rounds it takes to get to the boss or how to best fend off attacking players looking to cash in on your hard work, here’s what you need to know about skull clouds, skeleton forts, and those precious fort keys.

Sea of Thieves tips (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves update (opens in new tab) | How to fish in Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves Tall Tales (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves animal locations (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves pirate legend guide (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves gold guide (opens in new tab) | How to defeat a Sea of Thieves kraken (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves Gold Hoarders guide (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves Merchant Alliance guide (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves Order of Souls mission guide (opens in new tab)

The Skull Cloud

Let’s get the obvious bit out of the way first: when you see the skull cloud, sail towards it. Underneath is a skeleton fort, manned by (surprise surprise) skeletons, who are in turn manning cannons. They’re very accurate, so make sure your best sailor is manning the steering wheel as you want to avoid as many of their cannon balls as possible. Don’t be scared if there are other players’ ship waiting when you cast anchor: you should all team up together to take on the waves of skeletons that will soon be inching your way. In fact, if the eyes are intermittently blinking red it means that another crew is currently battling through the fortress to get to the sweet loot inside, so you might want to give them a hand.

Taking on the Skeleton Fort

When you land on the island, you’ll be met by a not-so-friendly horde of skeletons. Fight off the first wave with your friends (we really don’t recommend going in alone), then stock up on bananas and ammo before the next onslaught starts. You’ll know when the next wave is about to strike because a horn will be sounded when it’s near.

There are around 10 to 20 waves of skeleton enemies, depending on the size of the fortress you’re attacking. And what makes it even more… fun… is that you’ll face different types of skeletons. The normal ones are white, with blue headbands on. But then there are green, leafy ones that regenerate health in the water. Grey ones that are weakened by the sunlight or the light from your lantern. And gold ones that can’t be attacked unless you douse them in water, or lure them into the shallows.

Eventually a skeleton captain will turn up. Defeat it, and grab the skeleton fort key that it drops. It’s also known as a stronghold key, so don’t panic if it isn’t described in the same way. Now you can get into the Cursed Island treasure room. Plenty of skeletons will try and prevent your progress, so make sure you tackle it in a sizeable group so one of you can ferry the treasure back to your ship while someone else defends you.

Oh, and other crews can and will steal your treasure if you give them the chance, even if you’ve killed all those skeletons yourself. So keep an eye out for those salty sea dogs.

Sea of Thieves Pirate Legend status is just the first major hurdle in the game, but it’s the most prestigious one that entices countless players every day to set sail once again. Achieving Pirate Legend status requires players hit level 50 in the Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab) original three companies: Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance. Getting there is fun, but it’s a grind too, so use our guide on how to start your quest to become a Sea of Thieves Pirate Legend.

Becoming a Sea of Thieves pirate legend will gain you access to exclusive clothes, ship decorations and open up the Pirate Legend Hideout. Rare has added a lot of exclusive cosmetics for those that prove themselves worthy – things like new hair styles and multi-colored hair dyes, so follow our guide to quickly attain levels 50/50/50 in the game’s original factions.

Sea of Thieves tips (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves update (opens in new tab) | How to fish in Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves Tall Tales (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves animal locations (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves gold guide (opens in new tab) | How to defeat a Sea of Thieves kraken (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves Gold Hoarders guide (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves Merchant Alliance guide (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves Order of Souls mission guide (opens in new tab) | Sea of Thieves skeleton fort guide (opens in new tab)

How do you become a Pirate Legend?

Easy! Just reach level 50 with all the in-game factions then solve a few more riddles Wait, sorry, that’s not easy – that’s super hard, or at least very time consuming. There are no tricks to it, just a whole lot of leg work. Fortunately, we have some more guides to get you started building up your rep with the factions.

Once you reach 50 with every faction and purchase all your promotion, you can talk to the Mysterious Stranger for the final step toward becoming a pirate legend. Spoiler warning in case you’d rather figure the last part out yourself. The Stranger will give you access to a special new sea shanty and one final riddle: “Take this tune and make a sound, the secret lies near in the ground.” Do what the Stranger says and play your new shanty in the tavern, and you’ll notice a glowing insignia appear on some of the cobblestones nearby. Then they’ll drop down and reveal a hidden entrance to the pirate hideaway!

What are the rewards for being a Pirate Legend?

A fully clothed Pirate Legend in Sea of Thieves.

Aside from the inherent bragging rights of being a legendary pirate, you’ll get quite a few exclusive rewards for your troubles. They start with gaining admission to an exclusive Pirate Legend hideout located somewhere in the Sea of Thieves (you can take your non-legendary crewmates in with you if you want). Inside you can collect extra-lucrative Pirate Legend Voyages and purchase customization options to kit out both yourself and your ship. See the full set of Pirate Legend clothes above.

Later on, Rare plans to allow Pirate Legends become Legendary Captains with their own special vessels – they’ll spawn in at the hideout and then sail their ship right out from a hidden cave under a waterfall, Goonies-style! You’ll have to put even more work in to get to that point, though.

Who is the Mysterious Stranger?

They wouldn’t be very mysterious if we knew the answer to that question, would they? All you need to know is that there are many of them, and that they’re key in your quest to becoming a Pirate Legend. Don’t expect them to be of much help before you reach that everybody-at-50 prerequisite – they’ll just keep telling you to report back when you’re a few levels higher.

Where is the Mysterious Stranger?

You’ll find a Mysterious Stranger lurking at the back of every tavern in every outpost in the Sea of Thieves (you appear at a tavern whenever you log in). They’re the ones with the glowing eyes, you really can’t miss them. Every Mysterious Stranger serves the same purpose – think of them as particularly cryptic faction reps – so don’t worry about which one you talk to.

Not sure how to get gold quickly in Sea of Thieves? After all, a pirate with empty pockets is like a scarecrow without straw: utterly incomplete. If you’re going to live life one wave at a time in Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab), you’ll need to know how to enrich yourself quickly. For that, use our guide on getting gold in Sea of Thieves in a hurry, and in no time you’ll be sporting the rarest cosmetics and dancing the night away with your crew.

1. Order of Souls missions get you the most gold in the early stages

Although the Gold Hoarders quests might be the easiest to pull off when you’re still trying to work out where the sails are, you might want to head over to the Order of Souls questgivers instead. Their journeys work on a similar basis to the Gold Hoarders, but rather than going hunting for buried treasure, you’ll be asked to go to a certain island to take out an undead pirate captain who just happens to be a skeleton. Just look for a clutter of skeletons, and once you’ve picked them all off, their boss will appear. Kill it and then take its head back to any outpost’s Order of Souls tent to get your reward.

To begin with you’ll get a couple hundred gold coins per skull, while a Gold Hoarders’ chest will net you around 50-100 gold coins. When you’re starting out getting basically double the gold for doing a very similar quest will feel like winning the lottery, and get you steadily closer to obtaining all that nice new kit.

2. Merchant Alliance missions are also great for gold, but more complicated to pull off

If you get bored of killing the undead – although, why would you – you can dabble in some Merchant Alliance missions as they tend to be as lucrative as the Order of Souls deliveries. However, they’re a lot more complicated to pull off. Initially you’ll be tasked with delivering a couple of chickens, of varying colours, but to do this you need a chicken coop. The Merchant Alliance vendor will give you one per player, so if you’re trying to do this on your own, you’ll have to find the second coop yourself by scouting around the many, many islands of Sea of Thieves’ map. If you do manage to deliver a chicken, you’ll get a couple of hundred gold for your efforts. But it is a lot of effort.

3. Finding cursed skulls or expensive trinkets is ridiculously lucrative

Ooh what’s that over there? I see something shiny, glinting in the sand. For goodness sake, go and get it. Anything you find just lying about on a island, nab it and put it on your ship. For a cursed skull I got given a whopping 900 gold, and the same again for an ornate gold goblet I just found on a beach. They’re rare, but if you see anything glimmering on the lands during your treasure hunting, sell it as soon as you can and then just watch the gold roll in.

4. Watch out for cloud skulls, but you’ll need some friends

The very, very best way to earn yourself serious gold in Sea of Thieves is by accessing the Cursed Island treasure room hidden deep within the Skeleton Fort, which is marked on your map (when it appears) by a giant skull cloud. Heading over there, defeating the waves of skeletons that appear, and getting the Skeleton Key will allow you access to all the loot, but you’re going to need some help. The increasingly difficult waves of skeletons are an absolute pain in the bones to take out if you’ve got a small crew. You’ll need to team up with other pirate crews – I know, perish the thought of sharing loot – in order to take them all out. If you do though, you’ll have the best ship on the seas in no time.

5. The seas can be home to floating rewards

If another ship has been dragged into the depths, hopefully not by your crew you dirty scoundrels, you can occasionally find some of their treasures will come floating back up to the surface. As you sail the seas, watch out for floating barrels. Drop your anchor and then dive into to see what’s been left behind. Sometimes you might only get gunpowder and bananas, but who’s to look a gift(sea)horse in the mouth?

‘Tis the season of generosity in Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab), as the Festival of Giving event is now live and adds Gift Seeker Voyages, a new tutorial mode called Maiden Voyage, and a load of other holiday-themed content.

The lore behind the Gift Seeker Voyages isn’t your average holiday story. Apparently, a massive shipment of gifts was lost to the sea and somehow scattered across the map, and Stitcher Jim wants you to collect them and deliver them to his “love” at The Reaper’s Hideout – his love being this absolutely lovely masked stranger.

Never mind why Stitcher Jim’s beloved is so greedy for gifts this season, as you’re rewarded with Doubloons for your service. To take on Gift Seeker Voyages, simply visit Stitcher Jim in any tavern. And in the spirit of the holiday season, you can also choose to leave any gifts you find under the brightly-lit and very festive mast on The Reaper’s Hideout for special Commendations.

The other major update now available to Sea of Thieves players is the Maiden Voyage mode, a tutorial for new players to learn the ropes in a safe space before taking on the open seas. The tutorial can be accessed by any Sea of Thieves player and takes you to an offline island to practice sailing and docking your ship, battling skellies, and finding treasure.

The Festival of Giving update also adds new themed items to the Pirate Emporium and Black Market – check out the complete release notes (opens in new tab) straight from Rare for a complete look at everything new, including balancing updates and bug fixes.

Holidays are always better with a few pets around, so find your new friend with our Sea of Thieves animal location guide (opens in new tab).

Sea Of Thieves riddles are usually quite tricky, even the randomized ones found during Sea of Thieves (opens in new tab) Gold Hoarder missions have a reputation for rattling the brain at times – most often when you’re wandering round a forgotten island digging daft holes. Now thanks to the Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update (opens in new tab), Rare has given players a suite of new riddles tied to the Sea of Thieves Tall Tales (opens in new tab) story quests that have far more depth and nuance. In this guide we’re going to run you through the main Sea of Thieves riddles in the questline, offering you a handy cheat sheet for when you get stuck.

Sea of Thieves Totem Cheat Sheet

Sea of Thieves Totem Cheat Sheet

Before we start, here’s a cheat sheet for the Sea of Thieves totems you receive across all of the main missions in Tall Tales – you’re going to need to consult this later.

  • Crab – Uncharted Vault Island (N13)
  • Moon – Crescent Isle
  • Scarab – Crook’s Hollow
  • Boar – Devil’s Ridge
  • Shark – Kraken’s Fall
  • Snake – Mermaid’s Hideaway

Sea of Thieves Shroudbreaker Riddles

Sea of Thieves Shroudbreaker Riddles

Now, the first puzzle in Tall Tales is fairly simple. You’re going to receive a quest book when you embark on your first adventure in the questline, and the details will always lead you to the Uncharted Island at N13 “The jagged spires of Crooked Masts to the fore, Old Crook’s Hollow to the aft.” so head there and dive underwater on the north side to grab the log.

The next riddle in this quest is near the end – when you manage to open the ancient cave with your totem, you will have to light the braziers within the chamber and rotate the blocks to serve a string of symbols – the symbols are always listed within your book right at the end beneath the heading ‘Shroudbreaker’- there are three rows of four, simply input them in segments by turning the blocks and confirming your choice at the table – if you do it correctly you’ll receive the Shroudbreaker.

The Cursed Rogue Riddles

The Cursed Rogue Riddles

Another fairly simple set of riddles, Sea of Thieves The Cursed Rogue has you chasing the remnants of Briggsy, a Pirate Lord. The first riddle has you looking for the Skeleton Key, which can be at any of the locations listed below depending on the words (and helpful images) in your quest book.

  • “Northern Ancient Isles” – Snake Island
  • “Southern Ancient Isles” – Shark Bait Cove
  • “Eastern Ancient Isles” – Devil’s Ridge

Head to the corresponding location and you should find some skeletons ready for a scrap (and the aforementioned key, for your trouble!)

Once you’ve got the key, now you need the chest – if you turn the pages of your quest book you’ll find another entry which mentions certain locations (corresponding to landmarks in sketches within the book!) Check out our list to figure out where you need to go.

  • Three Maoi heads sketch – Thieves’ Haven
  • Bird statue sketch – Plunder Valley
  • Rowing skeleton sketch – Crook’s Hollow

The Legendary Storyteller Riddles

The Legendary Storyteller Riddles

Here’s where things get tricky. In The Legendary Storyteller there are multiple riddles which correspond to the childish entries in your log book, and they’re randomized every time you start the mission. Below we’re going to list the titles of some of Tasha’s tales and the corresponding island you need to go to, hopefully your book matches up!

  • Treasure Adventure – K9 (Uncharted Island with shipwreck)
  • Fish Friends – Mermaid’s Hideaway
  • Baddies Attack – Old Salts Atoll
  • Monster Hunting – The Crooked Masts (Shipwreck)
  • Naughty Man – Scurvy Isle
  • Smallest Boat – Lone Cove

Later on there is another set of riddles when you’re given a plank, but all you have to do is flip the plank to find the exact coordinates where you should head to line up the broken bits – sorry, spoilers!

Stars of a Thief Riddles

Stars of a Thief Riddles

Stars of a thief is even more convoluted than the last – with a whole system to explain to understand it’s main riddles. But we’ll get onto that, the first one is fairly simple.

When you first open your log the notes on how to find the Ancient Spyglass will read one or two ways – here’s where to head and dig:

  • “Face the North Star” – Rum Runner’s Isle (near a solitary hanging lantern)
  • “My back to the North Star” – Twin Groves (beneath a tree between two rocks)

Once that’s sorted things get more complex. The spyglass reveals constellations in the sky which correspond to certain riddle entries – you need to decipher them to find the Star Jewels. We could list it per entry, but we don’t know if we’ve got them all (they’re random, just like in The Legendary Storyteller) so it’s easier to show you how the constellations work.

In every riddle we’ve found you get a place location and and a constellation direction to follow. We’re sure you can do the detective work for yourself by simply finding the location in your given entry and following the directions. Here’s what every constellation corresponds to, direction-wise:

  • Great Kraken – North
  • Sea Queen – North/North-East
  • Boar – North-East
  • Fish – East/North-East
  • Great Warrior/Warmonger – East
  • Crab – East/South-East
  • Scarab – South-East
  • Feather – South/South East
  • One-Eyed Shark – South
  • Bear – South/South-West
  • Arrow – South-West
  • Flame – West/South-West
  • Boat – West
  • Snake – West/North-West
  • Eagle – North West
  • Turtle – North/North-West

So, for example – if you receive the instructions “Followed arrow to land unmarked” you would find the direction corresponding to the Arrow constellation, and in this case head south-west from your listed location.

Once you’ve got your jewels simply head to the underground cave at N13 to lock them into place and receive the totem which when followed (consult the Totem cheat sheet!) opens the ancient chamber.

Once you’re in there the next riddle section starts, but now you understand the constellation system its easy. In this section, you’ll receive a two stanza poem which is randomized. Though, each line corresponds to the description of each constellation within your textbook. Navigate there and you will be able to infer what each line means. “Warmonger” means Great Warrior, “Old Mother” means Kraken – the list goes on. Once you’ve mapped each line to a symbol, turn the blocks in the chamber to match and you will complete the mission. Phew!

The Wild Rose Riddles

The Wild Rose Riddles

Back to some straight-forward riddle stuff – The Wild Rose has you solving a long-winded puzzle about two lovers. First up it’s going to ask you to find the Chest of Memories via the journal entries in the quest book.

There are three major locations where it can be found and they’re clear as day in the logbook – so head to either Boulder Cay, Rapier Cay or Sandy Shallows depending on what is mentioned in your journal to dig it up.

After you dig up the chest you need to find the mementos – a music box and a spice box which can be transformed into an enchanted compass. It’s another case of randomized entries, so here’s every entry title and its corresponding island:

  • Our First Dance – Wanderer’s Refuge
  • Our First Kiss – Lagoon of Whispers
  • The pig chase! – Salty Sands
  • Doing what I do best! – Boulder Cay
  • The day we found our pendants! – Sea Dogs Rest
  • Day 81 – Lonely Isle
  • Our First Bounty – Lone Cove
  • The Argument – Twin Groves
  • The Perfect Plan – Sailor’s Bounty
  • Our Vows – Smuggler’s Bay
  • We survived our first ambush! – Cannon Cove

Sometimes there are extra steps that need to be taken – for example, ‘Our First Dance’ has you study their movements to find the exact location of the chest – in every entry there is a sketch of Rose and George standing over a certain location – below them is almost always where the chest is!

The Art of the Trickster Riddles

The Art of the Trickster Riddles

Back to convoluted riddles, The Art of the Trickster takes you to Plunder Valley to meet Salty the parrot. Once you’ve kicked off the quest head into the nearby cave where you will have to reposition some skeletons to unlock the caged spyglass. Follow the instructions:

  • “Captain points to fire and ash” – Make the skeleton point at the fire
  • “Hand in hand, two lovers face their destiny” – Make the coupled skeletons hold hands (aw!)
  • “The thief hides behind her mask of gold” – Keep interacting with the mask-holding skeleton until they wear it
  • “The Rum Runner laid her drink to rest” – Make sure the skeleton who is boozing up is downing their drink

This will drop the cage with the spyglass. Sorted! Now you’ve got that you want to check your quest book again to find the location of markings on either Discovery Ridge or Plunder Valley – for some reason the writers of this book have figured out LIDAR so they’ve made the process easy by marking the skull on each map – simply stand on the point and align the eyes of the broken spyglass on the objects in your eyeline and you will find the key.

The rest of the quest is linear – escape the island and head to Sailor’s Bounty for a skeletal scrap and a ton of traps. Good luck!

The Fate of the Morningstar Riddles

Once you’ve started this mission by heading to the Ferry of the Damned (feed yourself to the sharks!) you will be asked via riddle to head to the highest peak of either Kraken’s Fall or Marauder’s Arch (check the wording in your logbook) and you’ll find a sarcophagus with an Enchanted Lantern inside – which will reveal spooky ghosts!

Once you’ve got the lantern head to Old Faithful Isle – this bit is again very straight forward, follow the footsteps of the Morningstar crew around the island and find the related keys to free them. The only point to note is that you need to use the map behind the trio to find the chest at the end, where X marks the spot on the island is where you need to dig – no other riddles involved.

Revenge of the Morningstar Riddles

Revenge of the Morningstar Riddles

Again you’re looking for a shipwreck with secret logs, and luckily this time it is once more in a static location, no riddle required – head to Boulder Cay – the logs are in an underwater shipwreck on the south side of the island – the next part of the quest is a chest which is also found here, underneath a palm tree on the opposite end of Boulder Cay.

Once you’ve donned your fancy new outfit, head to Cannon Cove and kill Captain Gripper for Graymarrow’s Orders – which add a code and a legend to your quest book – there’s no secret to this riddle, all you have to do is match the symbols to the given legend and the game will give you directions to the skull – the answers are laid out for you. We found ours in a cave.

Now head to Sunken Grove, defeat Captain Shaw, grab the orders and decode them for directions to the chalice. Once you get the chalice you might think you’re done, but now you need to have a showdown with Greymarrow. Study your orders once more for the last riddle – there will be a letter and a number surrounded by apostrophes on the penultimate page – ‘Q’ for Cannon Cove and ‘3’ for Sunken Grove – combine them to get Q3, the co-ordinates necessary to find Graymarrow and have your final showdown. Good luck!

Shores of Gold Riddles

Shores of Gold Riddles

At last, it’s time to chart a course for the Shores of Gold – but how do you get there? Head to the Devil’s Shroud (check the handy map image above for directions) and you’ll end up in this mysterious pirate el dorado.

Once there, you need four tokens from four vaults, with a riddle tied to each. Here’s how to solve them.

  • West Vault: Check the middle table from the vault for four circles on the map. Usually you need to go and find the symbols yourself, but this is a guide damn it! From left to right it goes Kraken, Shark, Turtle, Flame.
  • North Vault: Avoid the spikes and spin the blocks twice until they’re all the same. The first time you want snakes, the second time you’re looking for the three characters holding up a flame.
  • East Vault: Check the ceiling and you should see a Gold Hoarders key formation – simply make that shape out of the blocks and get out of there with the token!
  • South Vault: Light the braziers and check your book for the Southern Vault log, you’re looking for the symbols that are only found on each specific pillar, regardless of order. Rotate and grab that medallion!

Once you’ve got the tokens all you have to do is slot them into the southern Compass Vault and the rest of the mission is a linear run through a trap filled chamber resulting in a deadly boss battle with the Gold Hoarder! Claim your riches, o mighty pirate!
