Let me preface this by saying that the only gun you should be taking into the Returnal Ixion boss fight is the Tachyomatic Carbine. The Spitmaw Blaster doesn’t work because Ixion always keeps its distance from you except in the final phase, the Modified Sidearm can do the job but will take ages, and the Hollowseeker is just one of the worst guns in the game.
With that in mind, and the Tachyomatic Carbine equipped, the Ixion boss fight begins when you hop into the arena. As with all the Returnal bosses, there are three phases, and the first phase is the easiest; never let Ixion out of your sight and keep your finger over the dash button. It will dash from one side of the arena to the other, firing a lot of general shots in a wide pattern, but one attack will also follow your movements. Dodge constantly when this is chasing you, then fire your Carbine whenever there’s a lull in the shots coming at you.

The second phase kicks off without any targeted shots, but a lot of equally-spaced big blue balls to dodge, along with a tall forcefield wall to jump over repeatedly. Rather than pressing circle to dash here, weave your way through the shots by strafing and jumping over the walls, while hip firing your Carbine.
After a short while, when Ixion leaps off the ground again, flee to one side of the arena. You want to be perpendicular when Ixion zooms back across and unleashes more shots and walls – oppposite the ledge you entered the arena from is the best spot. Dodge all of these attacks and Ixion will return to doing what he did in the first phase by staying stationary with similar shots. The only thing to watch out for is when he goes to the side of the arena with the big spire, make sure you strafe because he’s about to fire a huge beam.

Then there’s the third phase. It begins in a very similar manner to the second, although when jumping the walls, watch out for the shots above your head so you don’t jump into more damage. After this, Ixion will start dashing towards you and slashing, so the importance of dashing away here cannot be understated. Keep backing off. dodge the constant outward pulses when he bangs the ground, and Ixion won’t survive for long.

Kicking things off in the list of Returnal best weapons is the Tachyomatic Carbine, which is the closest thing to an assault rifle you’re going to find on Atropos. Depending on the weapon traits, it has multiple firing modes like a slower rate of fire with higher damage per shot or akin to a chain gun that fires faster the longer you hold the trigger down for, but either way the Tachyomatic Carbine is the best all-round weapon in Returnal that can deal serious damage up close or from a distance. It’s especially good against flying enemies.

The Spitmaw Blaster is essentially the shotgun of the Returnal world, which means it knows its role and it fills it well. Firing from the hip when you’re in the face of enemies and dashing about the place as quickly as you can works well, or you can aim down the sights to focus your shots and hit targets slightly further away. It’s not quite as versatile as the Tachyomatic Carbine but will serve you well up close.

This is sort of a trick inclusion because you’ll always have the sword on you (once you unlock it for the first time), but it is seriously good at taking down smaller enemies. Test it out on the standard foes in the Overgrown Ruins and you’ll find it one-hit-kills basically all of them, along with being a useful tool to finish off tougher enemies in later areas like the Derelict Citadel.

Finally, we have the Electropylon Driver. You won’t unlock this lightning-themed weapon until much later in the game so don’t think you can find it from the get-go, but when you do unlock it and start coming across it, we don’t recommend passing it up. This essentially sends out pylons that can attach to enemies and surfaces, causing damage over time.

]]>Returnal patch 1.3.3 went live earlier on Wednesday with a few stability improvements and bug fixes. But as @bowman290 flagged on Twitter (opens in new tab), error code CE-100028-1 has been blocking the game from opening for some players who downloaded the new update.
While at the moment there isn’t a fix available for the error code, Housemarque has acknowledged the problem, reverted to an earlier version, and promised a new patch is coming shortly.
“Patch 1.3.3 has been pulled and we are reverting back to 1.3.1 until it’s fixed,” the studio wrote in a Twitter update. “We are fixing the issue now and a new patch will be published in a few hours.”
Unfortunately, if you’re seeing error code CE-100028-1 when trying to open Returnal, you’re going to need to wait for tonight’s new update and then re-download the game. Housemarque even goes so far as to advise players against playing Returnal until the new update is live. “So to be safe, don’t start the game before the upcoming patch is available and downloaded,” the studio said.

The most tragic part about this situation is that some players over on Reddit (opens in new tab) are reporting lost save files due to the error, and because you can’t save your progress mid-run in Returnal, this means players could lose hours to this issue. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Returnal’s feeds for any updates, but for now, it’s probably best to heed the advice currently available from Housemarque.
