As diehard fans will know, Resident Evil’s timeline is pretty complicated. Mainline games exist alongside CGI films in canon, while there are several spin-offs to take into account across the years. The Netflix series confuses things further by jumping even further forward in time, being in dialogue with past events, and building on pre-existing canon.

To help make sense of it all, we’ve provided an overview of the Resident Evil timeline’s main events – including where exactly the new Netflix series fits in.

When does the Resident Evil Netflix series take place?

Resident Evil Netflix series

The Resident Evil Netflix series takes place both in 2022 and 2036. That makes them the latest events chronologically on the Resident Evil timeline.

In 2022, Umbrella is still alive and kicking, with Albert Wesker (who has seemingly returned from the dead) living with his daughters Billie and Jade in New Raccoon City.

14 years later and an adult Jade is surviving in a post-outbreak world. Flesh-eating zombies have overrun much of the population, with various corporations carving out their own regions and city states. It is also heavily implied that the outbreak started in 2022.

These events, as is revealed in the show, all take place decades after the Raccoon City Incident in 1998. There, a zombie outbreak was covered up by Umbrella and the US Government, with the city eventually being nuked to hide the truth of what really happened. If you’re new to the series and keen to see how that played out, be sure to play the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 Remakes.

Showrunner Andrew Dabb has already told us “everything that happened in the games exists in this world,” so here’s how the rest of the series fits alongside the Resident Evil Netflix show.

  • Resident Evil Zero (July 1998)
  • Resident Evil (July 1998)
  • Resident Evil 2 (September 1998)
  • Resident Evil 3 (September 1998)
  • Resident Evil: Code Veronica (December 1998)
  • Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness [Penamstan Civil War flashbacks] (2000)
  • Resident Evil 4 (2004)
  • Resident Evil: Revelations (2004-2005)
  • Resident Evil: Degeneration (2005)
  • Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2006)
  • Resident Evil 5 (2009)
  • Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (2011)
  • Resident Evil: Damnation (2011)
  • Resident Evil 6 (2012-2013)
  • Resident Evil: Vendetta (2014)
  • Resident Evil 7 (2017)
  • Resident Evil: Village (2021)
  • Resident Evil Netflix series (New Raccoon City scenes, 2022)
  • Resident Evil Netflix series (2036)

For the TL;DR crowd: the Resident Evil Netflix series takes place both 24 years and 38 years after the first three games. Wesker arriving in New Raccoon City in 2022 comes 13 years after his supposed death in Resident Evil 5.

If applying ‘games are canon’ as a blanket theory across the entire series, Resident Evil: Village is the closest in date to the Netflix series, technically taking place a year before the events of the new show. What that means for Umbrella’s resurgence both as Blue Umbrella in the latter games and as an evil corporation in the Netflix series is unclear, and there are likely to be some discrepancies if you map out every game in relation to the Netflix series.

To keep things as straightforward as possible, we can be sure that the genesis of the story began in 1998 with the first three games; the Resident Evil Netflix series builds upon it decades later. Phew. We made it.

The director of the 2021 Resident Evil movie has opened up about the upcoming video game adaptation. Johannes Roberts has revealed everything from the official title to how the Resident Evil 2 remake inspired his work on the movie.

Speaking to IGN (opens in new tab) at SXSW, Roberts said the Resident Evil movie – now officially called Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City – will be an “origin story” for the franchise and separate from the Paul WS Anderson series.

“It’s an ensemble piece, and Raccoon City plays a big part and is a character in the movie,” he said. “It’s about this group of people all coming from different angles – some coming into town, some already having grown up in this town – meeting over this one fateful night.”

Several iconic Resident Evil characters have already confirmed to be part of that ensemble. Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario), Chris Redfield (Robbie Amell), Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen), and Leon Kennedy (Avan Jogia) are all set to appear – but Roberts is also looking towards Resident Evil’s recent game history for inspiration.

“That game came out and it just blew me away, and from that moment on I think we all knew where we were going with this movie because it was such a wonderful cinematic experience with the tone, the constant dark rain, that sort of aspect of the game. And I just took that and went, ‘That’s the world I want to work in,’” Robers explained.

That’ll be music to the ears of Resident Evil fans everywhere. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is set to hit theatres on September 3, 2021. In the meantime, check out the best video game movies ever made.

Move over, Milla Jovovich, there’s a new Resident Evil film franchise on its way.

Deadline (opens in new tab)reports a Resident Evil reboot is in the works, and all of your favorite characters have been re-cast.

Kaya Scodelario (Skins, Maze Runner) will play Claire Redfield, Robbie Amell (Upload) will play Chris Redfield, and Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and The Wasp) is our Jill Valentine. The cast also includes The Umbrella Academy’s Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, and several other familiar faces.

The film is an original story adaptation from writer-director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) that will tie in faithfully to the games. Deadline reports the film will be set in Raccoon City in 1998. “With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences,” says Roberts.

The franchise’s original producer, Robert Kulzer, will return to produce again. “After a dozen games, six live-action movies, and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Racoon City,” Kulzer says.

The rebooted Resident Evil film is not related to the recently announced Resident Evil Netflix series, which will star Albert Wesker’s kids. As we recently reported, the series will debut on Netflix sometime in 2021. No word yet on when the Resident Evil film reboot will release, but expect there to be quite some time before we see it.

Where will the Resident Evil reboot land on our list of the best video game movies?

Capcom has pulled the Resident Evil: Resistance (opens in new tab) beta from Steam and PlayStation 4.

The open beta test of the asymmetric multiplayer spin-off game that will be bundled with the Resident Evil 3 Remake (opens in new tab) got off to a bumpy start when PS4 and PC players struggled almost immediately to successfully match in matchmaking lobbies.

Due to technical issues, there is a delay for the RE Resistance Open Beta on PS4 and Steam. The XB1 version is unaffected and is available. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as we can and will keep you updated. Apologies for the inconvenience.March 27, 2020

“We’re aware that PS4 users trying to play the Resident Evil Resistance beta are experiencing matchmaking issues at this time, and are working on resolving the problem,” Capcom said via a tweet on the official Resident Evil Twitter account (thanks, Eurogamer (opens in new tab)). “Please stay tuned for further updates. We appreciate your patience!”

Before long, however, it became apparent that whatever the issue was, it couldn’t be resolved quickly. Just a few hours later, Capcom confirmed it had to pull the beta completely “due to technical issues”, although the Xbox One test presently remains online and unaffected.

“Due to technical issues, there is a delay for the RE Resistance Open Beta on PS4 and Steam,” Capcom added later that same day. “The XB1 version is unaffected and is available. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as we can and will keep you updated. Apologies for the inconvenience.”

At the time of writing, there’s no confirmation on when the beta test might return to Steam and the PlayStation Store.

The producer of Project Resistance responded publicly to criticism of the series’ new direction (opens in new tab) when the spin-off was first announced, stating that while it’s “totally valid that people want more of the quality core [Resident Evil] experience” Capcom needs “to continue to branch out and try to offer up new gameplay in addition to refining the experiences people expect”.

For more on Project Resistance, find out why Josh thinks that while it isn’t the Resident Evil game any of us asked for, he’s sure glad that it exists (opens in new tab).

For sixteen years, Capcom has been unleashing hordes of zombies upon us in the form of Resident Evil. With close to two-dozen games in the franchise, it’s easy to get lost in the lore. It’s even more complicated for newcomers to the series who haven’t been following all the twists, turns, back-stabbings, deaths, revivals, and variations on viruses that have permeated Resident Evils narrative.

With Resident Evil 6 (opens in new tab) about to drop like a bomb on Raccoon City, we decided to put together this Cliff Notes version of Resident Evil to make sure you’re ready for the next installment. It goes without saying, but if you’ve somehow managed not to play a Resident Evil game in the last decade-and-a-half, beware of spoilers.

The Umbrella Corp is the root of all evil (also the root of all zombies)

Everything in Resident Evil (opens in new tab) starts with the Umbrella Corporation. A major pharmaceutical and medical research company, Umbrella was constantly working on consumer grade products like food and cosmetics. Meanwhile, they were also elbow-deep in the manufacturing of biological weapons.

Those very same weapons would ultimately be the downfall of the company. (Note to all future pharmaceutical CEOs, don’t fire the guy who has access to the virus that will turn your secret underground research facility into ground zero for a zombie outbreak.) After a few other instances of bad luck with a batch of biological terrorism, Umbrella crumbled, but the company’s legacy would impact the world for the foreseeable future.

Raccoon City is where it all started

Remember that secret underground research facility we mentioned? Well it happened to be located beneath a mansion on the outskirts of Raccoon City. Though the initial outbreak was limited to the facility in the Arklay Mountains, some of the virus happened to find its way into the sewer system, which in turn led to a vast majority of Raccoon City turning into mindless monsters with a very particular palette.

Raccoon City’s outbreak was contained a few days after it had begun, but it took a lot of hard work, diligence, square cranks, green herbs, and a few nuclear warheads. Though Umbrella was able to cover up this first small incident, many more would soon follow. Mostly because the company was interested in wiping out the population, but also so Capcom could make another sequel.

The outbreaks have always been contained

For the most part, the zombie outbreaks in Resident Evil have been fairly self-contained. Though each new game in the Resident Evil franchise saw its characters exploring new corners of the world, the catastrophe had yet to reach a global scale like it has in Resident Evil 6. Previous games saw the occurrences happen in a single city, a mansion, a cargo ship, or a secluded island.

Of course, not counting the Outbreak spin-offs (which no one does), Resident Evil 6 is the first game in the franchise with so many lead protagonists. It makes sense then the conflict at the heart of the game would have to be bigger than anything that came before. Ultimately, you’re still battling hordes of zombies, still searching for ammunition, and still trying to find the door the rooster key opens.

Chris Redfield has been battling Umbrella from the start

Chris Redfield is the only returning protagonist from the first Resident Evil. He was there at the mansion when Umbrella first unleashed hell, and he’s still chasing the undead to this very day. Of course, he’s started using HGH as a performance enhancer to keep up with all the advances in modern day zombie outbreaks, but hes still the same old Chris Redfield at heart.

Chris has lost a partner or two over the years, but somehow he’s still managed to push on in his quest to rid the world of bio organic weapons. Umbrella may no longer be a thorn in his side, but the amount of damage they caused while in business has created plenty of problems for Chris and the BSAA to solve. It’d be nice for the poor guy to get a break, but as the star or co-star of four games in the franchise, it doesn’t look like Chris will be ending his crusade any time soon.

Chris and Albert Wesker used to be partners

Chris was once a member of an elite special forces detachment in the Raccoon City Police Department called the Special Tactics and Rescue Service. Also on S.T.A.R.S. was a man by the name of Albert Wesker. Both he and Chris were both on the scene at the mansion outbreak, though their motives may have been a bit different.

Despite his penchant for sunglasses, menacing voice, and general creepy disposition, Chris didn’t think anything was wrong with Wesker.

Until Wesker was revealed to be a superhuman evil mastermind

Wesker set the S.T.A.R.S. team up to die in the mansion that night, yet Chris foiled his plans. Rather than being caught, Wesker injected himself with a prototype virus that only made it appear as if he had died. Instead, he was resurrected with newfound strength, speed, and the ability to regenerate, which is always what happens to people who inject themselves with mysterious liquids.

Albert tried to continue the work of Umbrella for the next few years. He also continued to star as one of the main antagonists of the franchise. In Resident Evil 5 (opens in new tab) though, Chris finally managed to track Wesker down in Kijuju, and put an end to all the misery he’d caused countless millions of people.

And then Chris had to kill him

Holding a grudge as long as Chris had was bound to end badly for Albert once Chris finally caught up to him. Even though Wesker had all the heightened senses and abilities one would expect from a science experiment, and he injected himself with another deadly strain known as the Uroboros virus, that still wasnt enough to stop Chris from kicking him into a volcano.

We know what youre thinking. If Wesker is dead, why did we need to know all of that information about him? Well it just so happens Wesker had a kid named Jake, who believe it or not, is one of the protagonists in Resident Evil 6. Will Jake go all Inigo Montoya on Chris? Will Chris proudly show off the boot with which he kicked Jake’s fathers posterior? We cant wait to find out.

Before working for the US government, Leon Kennedy was an ordinary cop in Raccoon City

During the outbreak in Raccoon City, the new cop in town Leon Kennedy was basically left to fight off Umbrella all on his own. Maybe he had a little bit of help from Chris sister Claire Redfield, but Leon definitely did most of the heavy lifting. During his time in the city, Leon befriended a young girl name Sherry Birkin, whose father Leon had to kill after he infected himself with the G-virus. Were sensing a theme here.

Leon managed to destroy Umbrellas underground facility and escape the city by train before it was blown to smithereens by the U.S. government. Funnily enough, that same government then hired Leon for his expertise, and turned him from an everyman rookie cop into one of the most able special agents in history.

Leon saved the last US President’s daughter from Los Zombies

As a special agent, one of Leon’s missions was recovering the then-President’s daughter, Ashley, from the hands of a Spanish cult known as Los Illuminados. There’s no such thing as routine in the world of Resident Evil, so what should have been an easy recovery mission soon turned into another one-man battle against a zombie outbreak.

This time though, the outbreak was even more dangerous because the infected werent undead. They were merely hosts to a parasite known as the Plaga, which allowed the people to be controlled by a master, and gain strength, speed, and an ability to resist pain. Leon was able to overcome the odds stacked against him once more, and saved Ashley (despite her best efforts to get herself killed), forever ensuring his place at the President’s side.

Capcom has announced today that they will be opening up aResident Evil themed restaurant (opens in new tab)in Japan next month to tie-in with (and promote) the upcoming release of Resident Evil 6 in October.

Unfortunately, the question we’re all dying to know the answer to – “what’s on the menu?” – has not yet been announced, but we wait with bated breath to know what kind of food will be served at a restaurant themed on a video game about the eating of human flesh.

The restaurant will feature special swag for fans of the series along with performances by the dance troupe S.T.A.R.S. Angelique. Biohazard Cafe & Grill S.T.A.R.S. will only be open for about one year, and will host its grand opening in Shibuya, Tokyo on July 13, 2012.

We’re very much looking forward to finding out how many people are willing to eat at a restaurant called Biohazard.

Just when you thought the Resident Evil series was going too far action – with the more flare, less scare style of Resident Evil 5 and upcoming third-person shooter Operation Raccoon City – Capcom promises a true survival horror sequel on Nintendo 3DS with Resident Evil: Revelations. We went hands-on with some of the game’s new items, more diverse characters and recently revealed RPG-esque Raid Mode.

First we were introduced to two tech-nerd type characters, Keith Lumley and Quint Cetcham, and their Bioscanner. With this item, you can scan enemies and the environment to gather information – the heroes were forced to whip out the gadget to get a bead on a new invisible enemy, the Hunter. These hulking monsters fade from vision only to reappear just before they attack. Looking through the Bioscanner highlights the Hunter’s outline, enabling the player to pull out a gun and fire on the enemy’s location.

Campaign details are always nice, but the most surprising and interesting part of our hands-on time was the brand new multiplayer feature, Raid. In this challenge mode, players choose their characters, loadout and stage, then tackle levels alone or with a friend via Nintendo WiFi or internet connection. Don’t jump to conclusions and assume this is merely Mercenaries tacked on to another Resident Evil, as Raid unexpectedly adds significant RPG elements. Characters can be leveled up to increase damage, health and resistances; loot is dropped in the form of weapons and weapon parts; and enemies have levels, attributes and resistances. The goal of Raid is to move from point A to point B, kill all of the enemies to get keys, and break a giant floating coin at the end. Performance determines the ranking at the end of the level and completing more difficult challenges nets better loot.

The variety of environments, satisfying weapons and intimidating high-level enemy encounters was impressive, but we are concerned with how Raid will fare in replay value. Stages – at least the ones we experienced – are short and don’t require much effort to memorize enemy locations. The RPG staple of grinding may also rear its ugly head, negating the horror elements with overpowered characters.

During our Resident Evil: Revelations demo, we also tried out the game with the 3DS’s Circle Pad Pro. When attached, the peripheral enables a fourth control option with the right control pad controlling the camera and aiming. The dual stick option felt very natural and the added bulk even made the 3DS more comfortable to hold. Anyone accustomed to playing the console Resident Evil games should feel right at home. The standard control scheme with gyro enabled aiming also felt fantastic and was the most precise, so you don’t necessarily have to plan on forking over the dough for a Circle Pad Pro.

Resident Evil: Revelations is scheduled to release next February in the US, and next January in Europe and Japan.
