Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose is going to be a fairly notable expansion for Capcom’s 2021 survival horror masterclass. The upcoming story DLC is launching as part of the Winters Expansion on October 28, which is also set to include new content for the arcade shooter offshoot The Mercenaries and a perspective-altering reworking of the base game – unlocking a Resident Evil 8 third-person mode. But it’s the Resident Evil Shadows of Rose portion of the package that will no doubt turn heads, particularly as it follows the story of Rose Winters, Ethan’s daughter, 16 years into the future.

While the Winters’ Expansion unlocks ‘Third-Person Mode’ as an option for the core campaign, the Shadows of Rose story DLC takes place entirely in third person – it’s quite the change. Call me a cynic, but I reckon this is a deliberate and admittedly shrewd move from Capcom with an eye on its much-anticipated and recently confirmed Resident Evil 4 Remake. And call me a sell-out, but I’m totally here for it.

I didn’t think we needed a The Last of Us remake until I saw it in motion

Given the acclaim the Resident Evil series has received since pivoting to a first-person perspective in 2017’s Resident Evil 7, the decision to revert to an over-the-shoulder POV here feels like an odd but assured move. Resident Evil Village is a continuation of Ethan Winters’ story from RE7, and likewise carried the first-person torch forward from the Baker estate to the next game’s titular European hamlet setting when it arrived last year. While mostly linear in makeup – in the same vein as its predecessors – Resident Evil Village offers players more in the way of exploration, with more optional areas and secret-laden hidden locations than anything that’s come before. Being shown all of this through the eyes of the protagonist at ground level makes a modestly-sized map feel so much bigger, a feature galvanised by the game world’s astute level design and back-and-forth objective structure.

Moreover, scrambling monsters and half-robot zombies are generally more terrifying when forcing themselves into your personal space – a sense of frantic claustrophobia that goes hand-in-hand with a first-person point of view – and the towering Lady Dimitrescu is doubly scary when viewed from Ethan Winters’ perspective firsthand, the hero often forced to tilt his head back just to take in all nine feet and six inches of the castle countess. In the case of Resident Evil Village’s new Third Person Mode, then, I can’t see how switching camera views can improve any of the original blueprint. We won’t know until we get hands-on with it, but I suspect the map will feel smaller, the enemies less scary, and, heaven forbid, Lady Dimitrescu less imposing.

Resident Evil Village

“Through all of this, a short-term pivot to third-person suddenly makes perfect sense.”

So why do it? The Rose Winters-starring Shadows of Rose expansion looks great, and, following the conclusion of the base game, is likely to be the final twist in frontman Ethan’s tale – one that I can’t wait to discover myself. I already have so many questions, not least: who is that doppelganger, and why has the otherwise helpful shopkeeper, The Duke, seemingly turned hostile? Still, given the Resident Evil Village base game incorporates a first-person perspective as standard, there was really no need to make RE8’s first slice of DLC anything different.

As also revealed during Capcom’s E3 2022 showcase, though, the Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake are both getting current-gen hardware upgrades, with 4K resolution, ray tracing, higher frame rates, and 3D audio all en route to the games first launched in 2019 and 2020 respectively. For PS5 players, the upgrade – free for existing owners of the originals – also adds haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support via the console’s DualSense controller. The RE2 and RE3 remakes are, of course, third-person horror games now on the cusp of being brought in-line with modern standards – in many ways similar to Sony and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part 1

Shortly after announcing Resident Evil Village’s Third Person Mode and its incoming Shadows of Rose DLC, the Resident Evil 4 remake’s director Yasuhiro Anpo and producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi spent five minutes outlining what we can expect from the reimagining when it lands on March 24 next year. Hirabayashi introduced new gameplay footage with the line: “The over-the-shoulder camera returns, of course!”, while Anpo later affirmed: “We want long-time fans and people who are new to Resident Evil to enjoy this storied franchise”.

Village people

“If I’m given small insight into how a modern day Resident Evil 4 might look and feel… then Capcom’s gamble has paid off.”

Through all of this, a short-term pivot to third-person suddenly makes perfect sense. As of last month, Resident Evil Village has sold over six million copies. That audience is locked in, and, I can only assume, raring to go for more story content, no matter how it’s framed and served. Despite being unsure of the value in a Third Person Mode myself, I’ll definitely give it a spin – if for nothing else but to see how Lady Dimitrescu stands up, and to experience Heisenberg’s industrial maze from a different point of view. If, in that process, I’m given small insight into how a modern day Resident Evil 4 might look and feel – it, of course, also set in a nameless, monster-ridden Eastern European village – then Capcom’s gamble has paid off. And whether you’re a longstanding fan or a newcomer, being able to blaze through Resident 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil Village and its coinciding DLC all in third-person view on modern hardware bodes well for Capcom’s next big push towards its Resident Evil 4 remake.

At this point, I would still expect the ninth main series Resident Evil – whatever it’s called and whenever it may arrive – to adopt a first-person camera view, as per numbers eight and nine, and there’s every chance that Capcom will eventually rework Village’s Shadows of Rose DLC through the eyes of its protagonist. When I first learned the expansion was “completely third-person”, I thought it had no business being so – but that, for me, in fact, is exactly what is driving the decision. And, while I find it an odd move, if it acts as a primer for next year’s Resident Evil 4, I am one hundred per cent on board.

Resident Evil Village is among the best horror games out there – how many of the rest have you played?

The Resident Evil Village Maestros Collection code is a combination lock you can find linked to both the Luthier’s house in the main village area. Like a lot of puzzles in this fairly open game, you can see thing on the map long before you can actually solve anything and get the reward inside. So don’t waste hours looking around in search of this one Maestro Collection code combination lock before you know what it is you’re actually meant to be looking for.

First things first, just keep playing through the Resident Evil Village story, until you complete the House Beneviento section where you’ll be able to pick up the all important Luthier’s key. You’ll need this to eventually get to the Maestros Collection code inside the house it’s locked in.

Here’s the Luthier’s key location, at number 1:

If you haven’t done that yet there’s no point trying to get the Resident Evil Village Maestros Collection yet. When you have the key head to the Luthier’s House at 2 on the map.

Once inside you’ll notice a combination lock on a cabinet and an obvious number on the table nearby. This is a decoy and put there to annoy you.

The Resident Evil Village Maestros Collection code

Near the decoy number you’ll find a note that says “I’ll never forget her fifth birthday. Head back into the other room where you’ll see a calendar with some numbers ringed around a date, that is also a decoy, and instead look for the poster in the picture up there. The Resident Evil Village Maestros Collection code is 270917, so pop that in the lock and you’ll get the F2 high capacity mag for you troubles.

The best Resident Evil Village guns will make short work of any werewolves. Once you find, buy or unlock them that it. Most of them will make things significantly easier and some will make a huge difference – like an early chance to grab a rocket launcher. The more open nature of this installment means it’s possible to miss some things, or spend a while fighting without a useful tool that’s ready to collect.

To help you out we’ve got all Resident Evil guns here that you can find on a first playthrough, more or less in the order you can get them. As well as the weapons, we’ll also look at the attachments and upgrades that can turn them from okay-ish to essential. That’s things like a high-capacity mag or recoil suppressor. Because you can’t carry every Resident Evil Village weapon one you at once this list will help you prioritize and find which ones to keep, and what you can safely sell to the Duke to pay for upgrades elsewhere.

LEMI pistol

resident evil village guns

The LEMI semi auto is the first pistol you’ll get when you meet the old man at the start of the game. It’s a basic pistol to start with but well worth hanging onto. You can upgrade it initially via the Duke to be more powerful than the later M1911 for a good chunk of the game, and then jump to the v61 Custom when it becomes available.

LEMI upgrades

Recoil Suppressor

Shortly after you escape the dungeons in Castel Dimitrescu, and one of Dimitrescu’s daughters, you’ll pass through the kitchens and into a corridor where you’ll find the recoil suppressor in a silver case.

LEMI High-Capacity Mag

You can buy a high capacity mag from the Duke for 9000 Lei.

M1897 Shotgun

resident evil village guns

Unusually for a Resident Evil game there’s no puzzles or trick to picking up the shotgun early – you can just pick it up. Although it initially becomes available during your first big lycan encounter, so it’s possible you could miss it in the chaos. You’ll find it in this house:

It’s a good starter shotgun but almost immediately replaceable by any of the later, more powerful, options.

M1897 Shotgun upgrades

M1897 Shotgun Hair Trigger

You can buy a hair trigger for the M1897 Shotgun from the Duke for 8000 Lei.

F2 Rifle

resident evil village guns

The F2 sniper rifle is another Resident Evil Village gun you can’t really miss. While making your way through Castle Dimitrescu you’ll eventually head through the attic onto the roof. You’ll find the F2 Sniper Rifle just before you go outside:

resident evil village guns

It’s a good weapon to take out threats from a distance, obviously, but also a good spare gun if you run short on ammo as you can noscope it. It’s slow to reload though so you might want to upgrade that if you end up using it in tight situations.

F2 Rifle upgrades

F2 Rifle High Capacity Mag – the Maestro’s Collection

resident evil village guns

There’s a two stage process to getting the high capacity mag for the sniper rifle. During the Beneviento section you’ll be able to find the key to the Luthier’s house in the Village at 1. And at the Luthier’s house at 2 you’ll find the high capacity mag locked behind a combination lock with the combination 270917, the birthday on a poster.

F2 Rifle High Magnification Scope

You can buy a F2 Rifle High Magnification Scope from the Duke for 15,000 Lei.

F2 Rifle Cheek Rest

You can get a F2 Rifle Cheek Rest from the Duke for 20,000 Lei to reduce aiming sway.

W870 TAC shotgun

resident evil village guns

The W870 TAC is a more powerful shotgun you can find not that far into the game once you’ve completed the Beneviento section. On the way back from House Beneviento you’ll pass a shed here:

resident evil village guns

Check inside to find the W870 TAC shotgun. Although you’ll probably have to deal with a few enemies first if you want to look for it unhassled.

W870 TAC upgrades

W870 TAC Foregrip

resident evil village guns

Once you have the Crank from the Moreau section, and can lower the gantry by the river at 1, you’ll be able to take a boat to 2 and find a small cave. Go all the way inside and you’ll find a W870 TAC Foregrip among the equipment.

W870 TAC Improved Gunstock

You can buy the W870 TAC Improved Gunstock from the Duke for 22,000 Lei.

GM 79 Grenade Launcher

resident evil village guns

You can get the GM 79 grenade launcher on the way to Moreau’s Reservoir, and more or less need it to proceed through some green slime barriers. It’s in the building with the Iron Insignia lock by the water wheel here on the map, and actually labeled as the ‘water wheel weapon’:

resident evil village guns

It doesn’t have any attachments. Just remember to reload it after you fire it, not when you try to fire it and realize it’s empty. It’s a single shot weapon and slow to re-chamber a new round. You can also press aim and press X to swap between different ammo types if you have them.

M1851 Wolfsbane Magnum – Moreau’s Hidden Weapon

resident evil village guns

The main Resident Evil Village Magnum you’ll find (there’s another in NewGame+) can be found in Moreau’s Laboratory when you’re heading back from his main area. It’s labeled as labeled as Moreau’s Hidden Weapon and you can find it here, behind a gate you need to use the crank on to open:

resident evil village guns

Moreau’s Hidden Weapon is, fitting, probably the only weapon you might actually miss. There’s nothing marked on the map until you use the Crank on the door to Moreau’s Laboratory, and no real reason to return here if you forgot to look and move on.

M1851 Wolfsbane upgrades

M1851 Wolfsbane Long Barrel

Once you have the power back on in Heisenberg’s Factory you’ll be able to press a previously dead button to get into the Operating room here on the MB4 level:

resident evil village guns

As you explore the room a drill guy will attack you through a door and you’ll find the M1851 Wolfsbane long barrel in the room he came from.

M1851 Wolfsbane Increased Capacity Cylinder

You can get the M1851 Wolfsbane Increased Capacity Cylinder from the Duke for 100,000 Lei.

V61 Machine Pistol

resident evil village guns

When you reach Heisenberg’s Factory you’ll unlock some new weapons to buy from the Duke. One of them is the V61 machine pistol which you should get straight away. Despite being a ‘machine pistol’ it still functions like a normal handgun if you tap the trigger, and has good power out of the box. Prioritize getting the attachments and you’ll have a great weapon against basic enemies for the rest of the game.

V61 upgrades

V61 Gunstock

You can buy the recoil reducing V61 Gunstock from the Duke for 35,000 Lei.

V61 Drum Magazine

You can buy the V61 Drum Magazine from the Duke for 70,000 Lei in NewGame+.

V61 Long Barrel

You can buy the V61 Long Barrel from the the Duke for 56,000 Lei.

SYG-12 shotgun

resident evil village guns

The SYG-12 shotgun is another new weapon you can buy when you reach the Duke in Heisenberg’s Factory. It will almost certainly be more powerful at a base level than any of your other shotguns, and probably just about anything else you have. So even if you don’t upgrade it, it’s worth getting and selling your other shotguns once you do.

SYG-12 shotgun upgrades

SYG-12 Red Dot Sight

You can buy the SYG-12 shotgun Red Dot Sight from the Duke for 42,000 Lei.

SYG-12 Long Barrel

You can buy the SYG-12 shotgun Long Barrel from the Duke for 64,000 Lei in NewGame+.

SYG-12 shotgun Drum Magazine

You can buy the SYG-12 shotgun Drum Magazine from the Duke 88,000 Lei in NewGame+.

Why are there so many huge open-world games with tons of map markers to tick off like a checklist? We all know the answer: to create value for money. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially as big-budget games keep impacting our small budget reality. $70 is a lot to invest for a predominantly single-player experience, but when you know that a sprawling open-world title such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will easily last you upwards of 50 hours, it’s a bitter pill that’s easier to swallow.

However, Resident Evil Village – whose core story mode can be completed within 10 to 12 hours – makes the case against the ‘more is more’ theory of value using deeper gameplay systems and reward items to transform the experience. Smashed that first play-through? Now try speed-running the game in under three hours for the elusive Dashing Dad silver trophy. It’s a completely different challenge, requiring a fresh approach to your map navigation and weapon usage. Thought the last boss was a breeze? Try completing the entire game using only melee weapons. We know that Resident Evil Village DLC (opens in new tab) is coming… but the New Game Plus mode makes a compelling argument that value-for-money rests in multiple replays.

Adrift on a sea of content

Assassins Creed Valhalla

As great a time as we have with open-world epics like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Just Cause or Spider-Man, something can grate about the way they’re stuffed with content. A huge, beautiful world can turn to white noise as we traipse across it for the thousandth time to reach a new objective, almost like it’s become a glorified loading screen. We begin to realise that many outposts repeat similar content; and we enter a zen-like state of opening chests without caring what’s inside, just delighting in the serotonin buzz that comes from another task done.

Repetition is at the core of almost all video-games, of course. Tetris Effect is one of the most repetitive games on the planet, but the core of the series is so strong that we could play it forever. We’d like to see more games that test – and deepen – your understanding of a game’s core mechanics, rather than your ability to listen to podcasts / stare out of the window / tape your controller in a fixed position, while you traipse across a broadly tedious archipelago of content.

Village gets closer to home

MGS5

The Metal Gear Games have length story modes, but it’s the deep, often hidden, mechanics that offer lasting value. (Image credit: Konami)

Resident Evil Village is a fantastic game. Its RRP is a slightly more reasonable $59.99, but it also takes a darn sight less time to hit the credits in it than in a huge open-world game. But you can put just as many joyous hours into Capcom’s latest action-focused survival horror as you can an Assassin’s Creed game. Once finished, you can play Resident Evil Village through again and keep things like weapon upgrades, as well as unlock new special items (like infinite ammo) that make subsequent playthroughs more interesting, or even significantly harder.

In earlier eras of gaming, when many of us were dependent on pocket money, we had to make do with a smaller selection of games, and we didn’t have sprawling open worlds to occupy our time. Metal Gear Solid on PS1 had a similar system of unlocks and replays, and the original Resident Evil was great to revisit to see if you could get a faster time. You don’t always need fresh material to enjoy returning to a game either. You don’t want to know how many times I’ve collected all the dragon eggs in Spyro: Year Of The Dragon.

In fact, for as long as it might take you to complete them to the last mission and collectible, huge open-world games can actually feel less encouraging to revisit. Every time I think about going back to Egypt to enjoy Bayek’s story in Assassin’s Creed Origins once again, I remember just how spread-apart the interesting bits are, and wish I had a mission select to get straight to the good bits. In fact, you could make the case for earlier open-world titles – like the smaller, more compact Assassin’s Creed 2 – feeling more welcoming to returning players.

Hopefully the likes of Resident Evil Village prove that games can offer better value for money – and provide a better investment for our time – using a lick of jam, not a tub of butter. A truly great game will always entice us back for another taste, no matter how long the first play-through.

Resident Evil Village’s Mercenaries mode has been shown off in detail, including the mode’s upgrades system for boosting the player character’s traits.

Earlier today, IGN (opens in new tab) published a feature detailing time playing the revitalized Resident Evil Mercenaries mode, which will be bundled into Resident Evil Village next month in May. The outlet revealed that there’ll be mysterious blue orbs found throughout each level in the Mercenaries mode, which you can use to upgrade various aspects of your character, or change the way enemies function.

Every time you pick up a blue orb in Mercenaries, you can pick from one of three abilities to obtain. For example in the preview, the player got to select from Blade Master, where knife attacks do five times the standard damage; Slow Motion, where enemy movement speed decreases; or Super Guard, which lets you take less damage from attacks when you’re guarding.

It’s an interesting aspect that definitely bolsters the replay factor of Mercenaries. Elsewhere in the preview, IGN explains how the mode functions on a base level, challenging players to make it through brutal combat gauntlets within a specific amount of time, encountering different enemies and weapons every time to really mix things up.

Resident Evil Village launches early next month on May 7, and it’ll include the Mercenaries mode on all platforms. Capcom’s horror sequel will launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, and will also come to PS4 and Xbox One as well. Recently, Capcom detailed the frame rates and resolutions of each platform, and it seems as though all next-gen platforms will boast a frame rate of 60FPS while maintaining 4K graphics.

If you’ve yet to check out either of the new gameplay demos for Resident Evil Village, then good news, because Capcom plans to extend the availability period of the final demo launching later this week. After some players were left dissatisfied by having a very limited time to play the Castle and Village demos over the last two weeks, Capcom has extended the time of the final demo that combines both areas by for a full week, so everyone has eight days to check out a slice of Village before it launches.

If you want to see absolutely everything in the forthcoming demo, check out our Resident Evil Village Castle demo walkthrough guide for things you might’ve previously missed.

A new Resident Evil Showcase livestream will be debuting brand new Resident Evil Village gameplay next week.

As you can see in the announcement below, the Resident Evil Showcase will be returning next week on April 15, at 15:00 PT/ 18:00 ET/ 23:00 BST. Since there’s now less than a month to go until Resident Evil Village finally launches, Capcom is pulling out all the stops for their upcoming horror game, and we can expect to see a brand new slice of gameplay during the showcase.

You might remember that a previous Resident Evil Showcase took place earlier this year in January, and was used to debut new Resident Evil Village gameplay. Elsewhere in the showcase, the Maiden demo for the upcoming horror game was immediately released for all PS5 users at the conclusion of the showcase, so here’s hoping Capcom has a few similar surprises up their sleeve for this new show.

In fact, those hopes could be well-founded, going off a recent PlayStation Store listing that surfaced earlier today on April 8. Earlier today, a Twitter user (opens in new tab) noted that a new Resident Evil Village demo had been added to the PlayStation Database, and it seemed as though the new demo was getting ready to launch relatively soon. Could Capcom be about to reveal another game demo for Resident Evil: Village?

Capcom has actually confirmed that Resident Evil Village would receive a second demo after the original Maiden demo. Whereas the Maiden demo was a story-driven prequel taking place before the events of the main game, Capcom revealed the second demo would spice things up with combat and portions from the final game. So far, no release date outside of “Spring” has ever been confirmed for the second, action-packed demo.

Resident Evil Village launches on May 7 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. As of today on April 8, the Resident Evil Re:Verse multiplayer project has entered open beta for PS4 players, bringing characters from all over the series together to face off. Could we be in for more news surrounding the multiplayer game in the Resident Evil Showcase next week?

For a full look at all the other games launching over the coming few months, head over to our complete new games 2021 guide for more.

There’s a lot of questions around the tall Resident Evil Village vampire, Lady Dimitrescu but at least we know her height now: 2.9m or nine foot 6 in hat and heels. So tall then. Even before her impressive tallness was revealed by Capcom, she was the clear breakout star of Resident Evil Village. Given the amount of fan art and general excitement it’s obvious that she’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

However, while most of the attention is focused on her for her looks, many might have overlooked just how much she’s telling us about what’s going on in the game.  In her brief appearance during the last the Resident Evil Village reveal she appeared seated (so… only six foot ish?) making a phone call to a mysterious Mother Miranda. While we only got a half the conversation in the brief exchange Lady Dimitrescu actually seems to give quite a lot of information away if you actually stop to listen to what she’s saying. So let’s take a look at the phone call, what she said, and what we can work out about what’s going on as a result.

Who is the tall Resident Evil Vampire lady in Resident Evil Village?

The tall Resident Evil Vampire lady only appears briefly during the reveal, but we now know she’s called Lady Dimitrescu. Her brief phone call to someone called Mother Miranda actually gives away a lot of information on what we can expect in the game.

This is what she says in full:

“Mother Miranda, I regret to inform you that Ethan Winters has escaped that fool Heisenberg. …because he is in my castle and has already proven too much for my daughters to handle. When I find him… No… Yes, of course. I understand the importance of the ceremony.”

There’s actually quite a lot to unpack there, so let’s break this down piece by piece and see what it might mean.

Who is Mother Miranda?

Clearly, Vampire Lady isn’t the big bad in Resident Evil Village if Lady Dimitrescu is reporting to someone and apologizing for letting the hero Ethan Winters escape. That means there’s a larger villain to confront in the game. Given how Resident Evil games usually work, that probably means someone more powerful and probably a lot more monstrous.

The tall lady has a brother

In a different part of the reveal, the Vampire Lady meets Ethan for the first time and says “you escaped my little brother’s idiot games did you?” This is likely the same person she mentions in the phone call when she says Ethan has “escaped that fool Heisenberg” (potentially the person in the image above). This probably means that the Lady Dimitrescu will be a second act appearance, with the brother being the first person you have to deal with.

The Vampire Lady might not entirely know what’s going on

Resident Evil Village

At one point in the phone call, Lady Dimitrescu is interrupted and remarks “because he is in my castle and has already proven too much for my daughters”. Given that she’s just told Mother Miranda Ethan has escaped, it sounds a lot like she’s answering a question along the lines of ‘how do you know he’s escaped?’ It suggests Vampire Lady maybe wasn’t meant to deal with, or meet Ethan (yet, at least) if she’s having to prove she knows he’s escaped. A press shot for the game (above) has also revealed there are four houses, of which Lady Dimitrescu is only one: House Dimitrescu, House Heisenberg, House Moreau and House Beneviento. Mother Miranda is likely the character that rules over all of them.

The Lady having ‘daughters’ suggests she’s definitely going to turn into a monster at some point

Let’s recap that previous line again: “Because he is in my castle and has already proven too much for my daughters.” The “daughters” have to be the three women who can turn into clouds of insects. This is Resi, so it’s very unlikely that the tall lady means the women are her children in a maternal sense. Whatever weird ‘turn into flies’ abilities the smaller ladies have must have come from Vampy. The Maiden demo has confirmed she’s got some interesting abilities thanks to her growing giant sword finger blades during her brief appearance. The demo also makes it clear that the inhabitant of the castle seem to be consuming the local population, apparently by sealing them in barrels to make a literal blood wine. Given that the long, floor-length dress is clearly hiding something, I’m going to haphazard a guess those aren’t normal legs under there. Giant insect limbs maybe?

Given the flies recall Marguerite’s abilities from Resident Evil 7, some connection there could be a strong candidate. There are other options though. Like the fly limbed C-virus infected J’avo Noga-Trchanje variant from Resident Evil 6. Or the Novistador, created from the Las Plagas in Resident Evil 4. The T-Virus-derived Drain Deimos are less likely, being basically giant mutated fleas.

What is the ceremony?

During her call, the Vampire Lady says she understands the “importance of the ceremony”. There’s no way of knowing what the ceremony is about at this point but there are two things that might have something to do with it. Firstly the image above.

This was revealed when Resident Evil Village was first announced and Capcom seemed to think it gave too much away, hence the mention in the image about how “we debated whether or not to actually put it in the announcement trailer”. It doesn’t really seem to show much, apart from some sort of desiccated fetus in a bird’s nest. The image also appears repeatedly in different parts of the previous reveal trailers suggesting it’s vital to something in the game.

Now. We know that Ethan is trying to get his daughter back and that he’s trying to get to the castle to do that. We also know that the daughter’s mother, Mia, was controlled and infected by the E-Type bioweapon mold and Eveline from Resident Evil 7. It’s also highly likely that Ethan was infected too, given that his hand was chainsawed clean off and then apparently healed perfectly after being stapled back on. That means it’s incredibly likely that their baby was born from at least one, if not two, mold infected parents, meaning she’s some sort of naturally born human-mold hybrid.

Now getting back to the baby/bird nest thing. Nests are where things grow and nurture their young and we also know there’s a character called Mother Miranda. Might she be the literal mother of the various creatures in Village, and after the pure born molded daughter of Ethan and Mia to raise into something powerful? Given that Ethan getting his daughter back is the whole ‘point’ of the game it’s likely that the ceremony is something to do with the baby.

How that might fit Chris Redfield apparently taking the baby at the start of the Resident Evil showcase isn’t clear but given that the whole point of the E-Type bioweapon is mind control, it’s possible he’s not acting of his own free will.

And one last thing I’m just going to throw out: given advanced aging was a part of the E-Type bioweapon’s ‘thing’ – Eveline aged from a 10-year-old girl to an 80-year-old woman in months – I’m laying some pretend money on the Maiden in the free demo being Ethan’s daughter.

Brand new Resident Evil 8 PS5 gameplay has debuted in a new trailer, courtesy of none other than Naomi Osaka.

You can see the PS5 First Play trailer with the tennis superstar just below, in which Osaka explains that using the DualSense is a bit of a shock to her, having been used to the DualShock 4 controller. From the one minute 52 second mark, you can see Osaka briefly playing Resident Evil 8.

Osaka comments that running is a bad thing in horror games, because usually if you can run, it’s only logical that there’ll be something to chase you (and she’s absolutely right, mind you). The rest of the brief Resident Evil 8 gameplay showcases protagonist Ethan Winters running around the rural village, and Osaka commenting that the DualSense vibrates in different ways depending on how Ethan moves. Capcom previously revealed that Resident Evil 8 will support adaptive triggers on the DualSense controller.

This is, oddly enough, our clearest look at actual gameplay for Resident Evil 8 yet. Previously we’ve only seen cutscene footage in trailers, such as village citizens getting devoured by the werewolf-like creatures. Just what you’d expect from a Resident Evil game.

Resident Evil 8 is launching at some point in 2021, on the PS5 and Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Capcom is looking into getting the game on current gen hardware, but they can’t promise it’ll actually release on the PS4 or Xbox One. If you’re looking to buy the PS5, there’s still time to find a deal.

A bunch of brand new screenshots have been revealed for games set to launch on the PS5, and they look stunning.

The screenshots cover a number of games, including Returnal, Horizon Forbidden West, Bugsnax, and more. Kicking things off just below are a bunch of stunning Gran Turismo 7 screenshots. We don’t yet know when Polyphony Digital’s racing sim will be launching, but we do know it’s confirmed for the PS5.

Next up there’s Astro’s Playroom. This is actually a game that comes pre-loaded with all PS5 consoles for free, and I can’t wait for another adventure with Captain Astro on the PS5’s launch day.

Who doesn’t love Bugsnax? Not me, that’s for sure. I’ve loved Young Horses’s weird and whacky game ever since it was revealed for the PS5 earlier this year. Bugsnax will be launching in Holiday 2020 on PS4 and PS5, and I can’t wait for it.

Horizon Forbidden West continues to look extremely sharp and stylish. Arriving at some point in 2021 (for both the PS5 and the PS4), the sequel has Aloy heading out west to explore, you guessed it, some pretty forbidden territory.

Resident Evil 8 is one of the main reasons I’m excited for the next generation of consoles. Ethan’s next harrowing adventure continues to look sublime, even if I know it’ll scare the hell out of me come 2021.

Returnal is a game that I’m equal parts fascinated and confused by. I have absolutely no clue what you’re meant to be doing in the game, but it’s a time loop game with incredible visuals, so I’m here for it.

But these are far from the only PS5 games to have some extremely impressive screenshots recently published. A batch of new Demon’s Souls screenshots were just recently published by Sony, and we think it’s certainly shaping up to be a system-seller for the PS5 later this year.
