Red Dead Online (opens in new tab) may be arriving today (at least for those who own the Ultimate Edition), but the single player portion of Red Dead Redemption 2 (opens in new tab) is still awash in secrets and Easter eggs that have yet to be uncovered by the game’s giant player base.

Just yesterday, a Redditor posted their latest discovery online, and its implications could be huge for the future of Rockstar’s latest open world masterpiece. First, though, a warning; this video from Brodythebeast20 (opens in new tab) features major endgame spoilers for Red Dead Redemption 2, so don’t click on it, or indeed read beyond this point, until you’ve reached the Epilogue in the main campaign. To reiterate…

*** BEWARE: SPOILERS LIE BEYOND THE MOUSTACHE OF TRUTH ***

Reached the epilogue? Good. Let’s talk about John Marston’s skeletal face. Upon jumping down a well in the Tall Trees region of the map (bordering New Austin), the character’s features begin to glow in the dark, revealing his zombified alter ego that dons the cover of Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare expansion.

How to make money fast in Red Dead Redemption (opens in new tab)2

Players have discovered that the same thing happens when playing as Arthur Morgan, though it’s not quite as glaring, but many have interpreted this as a tease for Red Dead Redemption 2’s very own Undead Nightmare DLC.

Since, by the end of the game, we’re back playing as John in New Austin, the door has certainly been left open by Rockstar for a sequel to the original spin-off expansion, in which zombies infest the western frontier for a campy, horror-tinged mini campaign.

If it is a bona fide portent, don’t expect any news for a while. Rockstar is no doubt focusing on setting up Red Dead Online for a smooth launch right now, and the studio’s previous commitments to story DLC for GTA 5 (opens in new tab) eventually turned out to be nothing more than false promises. We’ll keep you posted if and when we hear anything else but, for now, this Easter egg is a creepy little nod to Red Dead Redemption’s brief affair with B-movie schlock.

In the meantime, check out our guide to the Red Dead Redemption 2 Legendary Animals (opens in new tab), and catch ’em all to unlock every costume at the Trapper.

UPDATE: Rockstar has confirmed Red Dead Redemption 2 (opens in new tab) and it’s coming Spring 2018.

My love for John Marston is so deep that I could cry. Hell, I genuinely did, when that very upsetting thing happens to him, at the end of RDR. Yet while the charismatic cowboy is likely gone for good, I’m frothing at the mouth for Red Dead Redemption 2. Even more so following the leak of its apparent in-game map (opens in new tab). Pity I’m not on board with the idea of a prequel.

If that naughtily dribbled out diagram is anything to go by, we’ll be mounting trusty PS4 steeds in an era set long before John’s journey. Look closely at the map and you’ll spot caravan camps and a railroad-free take on RDR’s established Great Plains area, suggesting a more barren, less modernised take on the American frontier.

Thematically, this makes sense. After all, the original RDR was focused on the death of the West. Trouble is, Marston’s tale was such an all-encompassing checklist of every major cowboy trope that it’s hard to know where a (presumably 19th century) sequel could go. High noon duels? Done. Stagecoach robberies? Check. Cattle-herding? Been there. Skinning buffalo? Too late, amigo. What else can Red Dead 2 add to the overflowing outlaw stew?

Enter the Coen brothers’ laconic, ’80s-set Oscar winner. No Country For Old Men and RDR might be separated by 70 years, but they both represent peak cowboy. No Country lays down a cracking blueprint for Red Dead 2 – the post-modern Western that shows you don’t need swinging saloon doors to capture the genre’s doomed romanticism.

Rockstar has already shown its affinity for Cormac McCarthy’s tale of obsession – GTAV has an event in which you can net a cool $25k from a cursed briefcase – so why not go one further and make Red Dead 2 a present-day cowboy caper? Horses AND cars! Modern guns! Dolly Parton on the radio!

If that map leak is to be believed, the presence of an area called Heartland Oil Fields may point to a There Will Be Blood-style story. Yet I’d still rather play Marston’s descendant, and make grandpappy proud as a modern-day outlaw.

Over and above the freebies, Rockstar has pledged to return the Undead Overrun mode to its original settings. Provided you haven’t already traded in your Red Dead Redemption copy, or shelved it for the busy release season ahead, the one-two combo of a free DLC pack and Undead Overrun update should be ample motivation to mount up and partake in some old timey multiplayer.

Rockstar has announced one last DLC hurrah for loyal fans of Red Dead Redemption’s online mode. The “Myths and Mavericks” pack is on track for a September release, and will unlock fan-favorite characters for online multiplayer, as well as new locations for matches. In a “show of appreciation for the awesome long-term support” shown for the title’s online mode – which could easily have been written off as an addendum to the story-heavy single-player section of the title – the pack will be as free as the stars above your bonfire and the prairie wind in your hair.

Above: Landon Ricketts, soon available for your playing pleasure dead or alive

The pack will be available on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network in September and unlocks characters including fan favorite Landon Ricketts, previously only available for play in undead form. On that note, Rockstar has also announced that under considerable fan pressure, it’ll be restoring the original settings to the Undead Overrun mode via an update during the lead up to the new pack. The mode’s boundaries and time-penalties were tightened in an earlier update which met with widespread dissatisfaction – so before declaring an end to RDR support, the original mode will be restored. And let that be a lesson to you: whenever anyone changes something you like, you should definitely complain about it! Looking forward to getting into the “Myths and Mavericks” pack?
