While Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode, she spends the movie in hospital, recovering from a nasty injury Michael inflicted in 2018’s Halloween. That leaves her daughter Karen Strode (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson Strode (Andi Matichak) to confront The Shape.

When Allyson is on the wrong end of Michael’s knife at the Myers House, Karen saves her, and lures The Boogeyman outside after unmasking him. It’s a trap for Michael, with the mob waiting for him. The townsfolk seem to put him down for good, but he gets right back up again and continues the slaughter. Karen makes the fatal mistake of thinking The Shape has been defeated, and goes to look from the window of Judith Myer’s bedroom – right at the end of the movie, Michael appears, and stabs her to death.

“I was writing with Danny McBride and Scott Teems, and as we were writing it, that just happened,” director David Gordon Green tells GamesRadar+ of the decision to kill Karen. “And then we stopped writing.”

But how will that affect Laurie and her emotional state in the upcoming Halloween Ends?

“Well, if you look at where Laurie Strode went from 1978 over the next 40 years, we found the person in a very different state than we’d left her,” Green explains. “And the most enjoyable characters to write and watch are the ones that evolve and go through change. There’ll be a lot of unexpected character evolution in the next one, and that’s because processing grief and tragedy and a massacre like this can only go in any number of infinite directions. And so we just get to pick one and take that journey with her.”

That might seem a strange move, considering Candyman is currently performing well at the box office, and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has smashed Labor Day weekend records. But Deadline (opens in new tab) says that it’s to do with “eventizing” the movie, and indicate the film will (unsurprisingly) be available on the streamer’s paying tiers.

According to the report, the new strategy has nothing to do with the ongoing pandemic. Universal is said to have been happy with the performance of The Boss Baby: Family Business over its Independence Day weekend release (which also went to Peacock and theaters simultaneously), and so the studio is trying the same strategy with Halloween Kills.

The sequel to 2018’s Halloween debuted at Venice Film Festival, with our review calling it “a blast while ably setting up the big finale.” The film picks up directly where its predecessor left off, with Michael Myers surviving the house fire unscathed – and prepared for another night wreaking havoc on the residents of Haddonfield.

David Gordon Green returns to direct, while Jamie Lee Curtis is back as Laurie Strode, Judy Greer returns as Karen, and Andi Matichak is back as Allyson. Anthony Michael Hall will play Tommy Doyle, and Kyle Richards reprises her role from the original Halloween as Lindsey Wallace. Also returning from the original is Will Patton as Deputy Frank Hawkins, and Nancy Stephens as Marion Chambers. 

Speaking to our sister publication Total Film, Curtis described the sequel as “intense and brutal. Just brutal.”

“There’s an incredible amount of killing in this movie,” co-writer Danny McBride added. “It’s so bloody. It’s wild. David just went for it. This is such a vicious sequel. It’s relentless.”

The director of Knives Out and Star Wars: The Last Jedi will serve as creator, writer and director of the series (presumably flexing the muscles he honed on the former project), while Lyonne will star in the lead role. 

Lyonne is co-creator, co-writer, executive producer, and director of the Netflix time loop comedy Russian Doll. Season 2 is on its way, with Schitt’s Creek’s Annie Murphy recently joining the cast for the show’s next installment. Lyonne has also recently had supporting roles in movies like The United States vs. Billie Holiday and Ad Astra, as well as working behind the camera on TV shows like Shrill and High Fidelity.

Meanwhile, Johnson is currently working on a sequel to his 2019 mystery movie Knives Out. While Poker Face is his first time working as a showrunner, it’s not his first foray into the small screen – he directed multiple episodes of hit crime drama Breaking Bad between 2010 and 2013. 

“I’m very excited to dig into the type of fun, character driven, case-of-the-week mystery goodness I grew up watching,” Johnson said in a statement. “It’s my happy place. Having Natasha as a partner in crime is a dream, and we’ve found the perfect home at Peacock.”
