Pacific Rim imagines a world in which humans pilot giant robots (Jaegers) to fight off the onslaught of humungous interdimensional aliens (Kaiju), hellbent on ravaging Earth.
Being a Guillermo del Toro picture, there’s a ridiculous amount of detail loitering in the background. From the tech that goes into building the Jaegers – including the mind-melding ‘Drift’ that pilots have to enter into to control their creations – to the carnage wreaked by the monstrous Kaiju, the film is swimming in details that you might not pick up on during your first viewing.
So when we sat down with del Toro and cast members Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Robert Kazinsky, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman, we asked them to tell us about the most fascinating hidden details in the Pacific Rim world.
Watch the video below to find out what they had to say:

Despite the fact that Guillermo del Toro was initially hesitant to release Pacific Rim in 3D, Warner Bros has announced that the film will now be post-converted.
The film will receive the three-dimensional treatment in post production, but director Guillermo del Toro had previously been of the opinion that the film wouldn’t be well suited to the technology.
“I didn’t want to make the movie 3D,” said del Toro at this year’s Comic-Con , “because when you have things that big, the thing that happens naturally is you’re looking at two buildings at 300 feet. If you move, the buildings don’t go like this (moves his hands closer together), there’s no parallax.”
“They’re so big that you barely notice anything no matter how fast you’re moving, so to force the 3D effect on robots and monsters that are supposed to be that height, you’re making them miniaturised, you’re making them human-scale. I knew that the 3D effect sounded like a great idea, but it was gonna be counter.”
However, Warner will be keen to boost the financial return from the project, and with China currently only releasing American films if they are in 3D or IMAX, and a lot of the film’s action taking place in Asia, the decision was probably a no-brainer.
Still, western audiences will get the option to choose their preference between 2D and 3D. Pacific Rim opens in the UK on 12 July 2013.
