Sony’s laid out its broad expectations for its first-party PlayStation portfolio all the way up to 2026, and it seems PS4 releases are going to start winding down soon.

In a new business report (opens in new tab), a slide titled “evolving shape of first-party portfolio” shows the percentage of releases by platform across three fiscal years. In FY19 (on the calendar, that’s April 2019 through March 2020), 90% of those first-party releases were on PS4, with 10% on PC. In FY22 (April 2022 through March 2023), that split is expected to be around 30% PS5, 40% joint PS4 and PS5, 20% PC, and 10% mobile.

By FY25 (April 2025 through March 2026), Sony projects 50% of its releases will be on PS5, 30% on PC, and 20% on mobile. There’s no slice on that chart marked for further first-party PS4 games.

We’ve reached out to Sony for comment and will update if we learn more.

It’s little surprise to see evidence of PS4 winding down by this point, since the console will be turning 10 years old as of 2023 – a lifetime in consumer electronics terms. Still, the previous generation of consoles had already lasted far longer than most that had come before, and ongoing supply issues have meant that adoption of the new machines has been slow.

As part of this same report, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said that PS5 demand is far beyond that for PS4 at the same time period in its life, but because of those supply issues the new console’s sales haven’t been matching up. Sony expects to start closing the gap in 2023, and in 2024 the company projects that PS5 will finally start outdoing its predecessor.

Maybe it’s time to start rounding out your library of the best PS4 games.

Gears of War developer The Coalition is going to show off a demo created in Unreal Engine 5 at GDC.

The GDC panel (opens in new tab), which is set to run for an hour, is going to be presented on July 20 at 1:20 PM PT. The demo is called Alpha Point and will showcase how The Coalition has fared working with the Unreal Engine 5 technology, what the studio learned about it in a development environment, and the technology it’s taken advantage of. You won’t be able to access the panel unless you have a pass for the show though.

It’s important to note that this will not be a showcase of anything The Coalition is actively working on, at least in terms of a brand new game. This is purely a tech demo being made to showcase what the studio can achieve with the engine. So, don’t expect anything Gears of War or new IP-related from the developer.

However, it will be useful for developers to see exactly what can be done with the powerful new technology in a capacity outside of Epic Games. We’ve already seen Unreal Engine 5 in use in a showcase from the Fortnite developer last year, but this will demonstrate what can be done in other hands.

That means, even if you aren’t a developer, while there will be a lot of technical jargon, you will be able to get a sense of what truly next-gen games look like running in Unreal Engine 5. A session description confirms the demo will be running entirely on the Xbox Series X, meaning that it will literally show off what is possible on the console.

While fans won’t get a look at a new Gears of War here, this demo should at least give players some insight on what’s coming. The Coalition has moved over to Unreal Engine 5 for future games. All in all, it should be a fascinating glimpse whether you are a developer interested in working with the engine or just a game enthusiast looking for a glimpse at the future of games.

Check out what other
games are upcoming up on the Xbox Series X.

Microsoft has revealed the full specs for the Xbox Series X size, so now you’ll know exactly e and whether it’ll fit in your TV unit. The Xbox Series X will be 301 x 151 x 151mm, making it vastly smaller and slicker in build compared to the launch version of the Xbox One.

The news was originally revealed in a humorous Tweet from Xbox comparing the Xbox Series X to a fridge (news flash: the console is a fair bit smaller, but – sadly – isn’t capable of keeping food cold), as just one more piece of information part of another next-gen news blowout from Microsoft.

Previous images and trailers of the Xbox Series X allowed eagle-eyed users to make smart estimations about the console’s height, width, and density, but this specific numbers finally let us determine whether our TV cabinets are big enough for the upcoming platform, which is scheduled to release on November 10.

Thankfully, you’ll be able to either have the console sat upwards or laying down, depending on your gaming set-up, ensuring there should be enough room for it despite its beefier depth.

In other news, Microsoft also showed off the Xbox Series X loading times (opens in new tab) in a new trailer comparing it to that of the Xbox One X. Spoilers; It’s quite impressive.

Resident Evil 3 managed to heal my childhood fear of the Nemesis (opens in new tab)

Aside from promoting a digital strategy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and boosting sales of existing titles such as Resident Evil 3 Remake (opens in new tab) and Monster Hunter World (opens in new tab), the company confirms its intention to launch a number of major, unannounced games between now and the end of March 2021.

What those games could be is anyone’s guess, but rumours of Resident Evil 8 (opens in new tab) have been circulating for some time now, while Capcom has plenty of other IP to drawn from its well of licenses, such as Dino Crisis and Street Fighter.

There’s also the question of next-gen. With the release of PS5 (opens in new tab) and Xbox Series X (opens in new tab) scheduled to hit markets this Holiday, does Capcom have any ambition to exploit those new platforms with remasters of existing titles or an enticing launch exclusive? Hopefully it won’t be too much longer until we learn more.

Update: The Mafia Twitter account has piped up again, sending out another one-word missive after years of inactivity.

This time, the Mafia Word of the Day is “Power.”

We’ll have to wait and see what these teasers mean, but until then you can check out our original story for more context.

Original story follows

The official Mafia Twitter account posted a one word tweet on Sunday, following years of silence, fuelling speculation that a big announcement is on the way.

The account, whose last tweet was in September 2018 to promote Mafia 3 (opens in new tab) being the new free PS Plus game (opens in new tab) for that month, published and pinned the following on its timeline yesterday, seemingly in recognition of Mother’s Day in the US.

Naturally, this has already stirred up the Mafia fanbase, as rumours of a Mafia 2 remaster (opens in new tab) have been doing the rounds since a listing for the game was discovered on the Korean Ratings Board earlier this year.

Alternatively, there’s all the prospect that Mafia 3 developer Hangar 13 is working on a sequel, Mafia 4, especially as the opportunity afforded by upcoming next-gen consoles, the PS5 (opens in new tab) and Xbox Series X (opens in new tab), are now only a few months’ away from releasing.

2K Games, the publisher in possession of the Mafia license, have said nothing about the future of its open world crime franchise, but in an interview with GamesRadar (opens in new tab) in 2018, Hangar 13’s then VP and Executive Producer Andy Wilson made it clear that the series wouldn’t be going to bed following the mixed reception to Mafia 3.

“We own it, we love it, and we’ve got a few ideas that we’re kicking around,” said Wilson. “We’ll announce what we announce in due course, but it’s still very much part of our DNA as a studio.”

We’ve reached out to 2K for comment, and will let you know if we hear anything more.

Big in 2020: Dying Light 2 might be delayed indefinitely, but it will certainly not be forgotten (opens in new tab)

Dying Light: Hellraid is inspired by Techland’s unreleased fantasy role-playing game, Hellraid, which the studio emphasizes remains on hold for now, as it continues to work on both Dying Light 2 and another new IP yet to be revealed.

Instead, this paid expansion is Techland’s way of bringing a piece of Hellraid to the Dying Light universe while fans continue to wait for the launch of Dying Light 2, which was scheduled to release this Spring, but saw an indefinite delay earlier in the year.

It’s unclear what exactly you’ll be up to in Dying Light: Hellraid, but the trailer for the game (seen above) seems to suggest it involves some sort of demonic arcade machine, which will no doubt bring new terrors to the hugely popular sandbox of Harran.

If you’re curious, find out why so many people are still playing Techland’s sleeper hit (opens in new tab), five years after it launched. You can also find the Steam page for Dying Light: Hellraid here (opens in new tab)

Microsoft has explained why they’re sticking with AA batteries in the Xbox Series X controller.

Confirming the news in a new deep dive into the Xbox Series X (opens in new tab) with Digital Foundry (opens in new tab), partner director of program management at Xbox Jason Ronald explained Microsoft’s decision to stick with the battery pack for the next iteration of its Xbox controller.

Xbox Series X: 10 things we learned from the latest Phil Spencer reveal post (opens in new tab)

“What it comes down to is when actually talking to gamers, it’s kind of polarising and there is a strong camp that really want AAs.” said Ronald. “So just giving flexibility is the way to please both [sets of] people… You can use a rechargeable battery pack and it works just like it does on the Elite, [but] it is a separate thing.”

Ronald continued to say that the use of batteries also allows for a longer shelf life for the controller, as these can be easily replaced while internal cell units – like the ones found in the DualShock 4 on PS4 – eventually wear out, forcing players to buy an entirely new controller.

Meanwhile, a recently discovered PS5 (opens in new tab) patent suggests the PS5 controller (opens in new tab) for Sony’s own next-gen platform could feature wireless charging capabilities, with an external accessory that allows users to charge their gamepad while playing without having to hook up the device to the console itself.

The Digital Foundry piece goes into deeper detail on the Xbox Series X size (opens in new tab), Xbox Series X specs (opens in new tab), and more, but Microsoft has yet to reveal the price and release date for the hardware, which is set to launch sometime in Holiday 2020. Given how often, and much, the company is revealing about its latest product these days, however, I don’t imagine we’ll be waiting much longer to hear more about that.

Microsoft has clarified that the Xbox Series X (opens in new tab) won’t feature a S/PDIF optical output port when it releases later this Holiday, despite appearing on the back of the several prototype units used to promote the console so far.

The news arrives from Microsoft via WindowsCentral (opens in new tab), confirming that the port, which currently exists on both the Xbox One S and Xbox One X, will be one of the few (alongside the HDMI IN port (opens in new tab)) to be cut from their next-gen successor.

Confirmed with Microsoft: the final, retail Xbox Series X does NOT have an optical out. I know @JezCorden / @windowscentral had official confirmation on this the other day, but lots of folks have been tweeting me after seeing this in the Xbox dev stream today, so I followed up. https://t.co/xGHh93fcuJMarch 18, 2020

Xbox Series X: 10 things we learned from the latest Phil Spencer reveal post (opens in new tab)

This means that a number of soundbars, speakers, and high-end headsets that connect via an optical audio port won’t be compatible with the Xbox Series X, though most modern televisions now feature the S/PDIF output themselves, somewhat mitigating the effect this will have on Xbox users.

In related developments, WindowsCentral (opens in new tab) also confirmed that respected headset manufacturer Astro is working with Microsoft to develop devices that are compatible with the Xbox Series X, despite its A50 range of headsets and MixAmps typically relying on an optical audio port to hook up to Xbox One consoles at present.

Hopefully, other manufacturers like Turtle Beach and HyperX will follow suit, otherwise some of the best gaming headsets (opens in new tab) on the market will have to be hooked up to your TV, rather than your next-gen console, once the Xbox Series X lands later this year. Stay tuned to GamesRadar for all Xbox and PS5 (opens in new tab) news as it arrives.

Those who purchase a copy of Cyberpunk 2077 (opens in new tab) on Xbox One will be able to play the game on Xbox Series X (opens in new tab) for free, developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed.

In response to the latest Xbox Series X specs news (opens in new tab) for Microsoft’s next-gen console, The Witcher 3 (opens in new tab) studio stated in a tweet that “gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades.”

Thus the upcoming sci-fi RPG will be playable on Xbox Series X as a free “upgrade” for those who already own Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One, “when available”.

What’s less clear is whether this “upgrade” is simply the backwards compatible version of Cyberpunk 2077 on current gen consoles, or a fully fledged next-gen port developed specifically for the Xbox Series X and its direct competitor, the PS5 (opens in new tab)

CDPR has already stated that Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be available (opens in new tab) on either of those upcoming consoles when they launch this Holiday, and when contacted by GamesRadar, the studio explained it had nothing more to share at this time.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has confirmed that “four generations” of Xbox games will be compatible with the Xbox Series X, with its Smart Delivery technology ensuring that “you only have to purchase a title once in order to play the best available version for whichever Xbox console they choose to play on.”
