There’s nothing better than adding a new face to your ranks. Whether you’ve recruited a new knight or unlocked some special character mode, it’s a great feeling knowing there’s more to a game than the starting roster. Nothing spices up a skating game like a Sith Lord, and nothing makes a survival horror game more intense than playing as a piece of food.
Even though fighting games are famous for expanding rosters, there are new characters to uncover in platformers, adventure games, and RPGs too. Get ready to recruit new party members and fight some hidden badasses, because we’re starting with…

There’s no better way to start talking about secret characters than with Reptile: he was literally the first unlockable boss character in fighting game history. All you had to do was win with a Double Flawless Victory without blocking and finish the fight with a Fatality, all when a certain object flew past the moon in the one very specific level. Pssh, easy.
The master of the Pit has appeared in all the Mortal Kombat games since, alternating between a human form in green garb and a full-on lizard man. The scaly dude has quite a legacy; David Icke would be proud.

So you’re playing Resident Evil 2. You could play as Claire Redfield or Leon Kennedy and enjoy the thrill of narrowly escaping death at the hands of zombies or you could play as a floppy, larger-than-life block of tofu.
Finish all parts of the game with A rankings, and he’s yours. He was originally just meant to test the game’s collision physics, but Capcom wisely made him playable – starting with just a knife and few herbs. Sure, he can take more damage than other characters, but that doesn’t save him from being eaten by fellow operative Hunk at the end of the game. Poor, delicious friend.

Oddly enough, Mewtwo isn’t considered that good of a fighter in the Smash Bros. series. Sure, he can dodge better than most, but it’s his status of being the only playable legendary Pokemon that makes him, well, legendary.
Originally meant for Smash on the Nintendo 64, Mewtwo didn’t make the cut until Melee on the GameCube – where you had to play dozens of hours and hundreds of matches to unlock him. After fan outrage at not being included in Brawl, those same fans freaked the hell out – in a good way – (opens in new tab) when he was announced as DLC for the Wii U and 3DS versions. Yay, Pocket Monsters!

There are Ryu and Ken, and then there’s Akuma. While the two Street Fighter posterboys battle for good, Akuma exists only to defeat others with his dark arts. Funny, considering he’s actually Ryu’s adoptive uncle.
The coolest thing about Akuma is his conception. An April Fool’s Day joke in an old issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly hinted at unlocking Ryu and Ken’s master Shen Long in the original game. After massive disappointment from their fan base, Capcom threw the kids a bone by including the evil master Akuma. And with Street Fighter 4, they finally revealed Gouken, Ryu’s adoptive father and Akuma’s older brother. Ah, family.

‘Evil’ versions of characters are nothing new, and palette swaps usually satisfy the fanboys (I’ll take purple suit Luigi for as long as I have to, Nintendo). But there’s something extra special about Devil Jin, who is Tekken’s main protagonist consumed by the evil genes inside him – just look at those wicked wings!
He showed up in Tekken 3 and 4 in cut scenes, but we finally got our hands on his horns in Tekken 5. While Jin fights with traditional karate techniques, Devil Jin pounds foes with the high-level Mishima fighting style, full of dragon punches, tsunami kicks, and 10-hit combos. Bad to the bone.

If you’re a fan of manga like Dragon Ball and Sandland but haven’t played Tobal No. 1, shame on you – all the characters are designed by mangaka Akira Toriyama. This is important, as Toriyama includes a “Tori Bot” in most of his work; it’s a little robot that represents himself in funny situations. And that bot is playable in Tobal No. 1, going by the nickname Toriyama Robo.
The best part is that you won’t even know Robo exists until you finish an especially difficult 30-floor dungeon in the game’s Quest Mode. “Who’s this fool?” you’ll ask until you beat him and realize he was a secret character all along.

The NES version had Mike Tyson, so Nintendo knew it needed another celebrity final boss for its Wii revival. It went internal, setting up the great ape Donkey Kong as the ultimate boss. Even better, you can spot DK in the audience in multiple Punch-Out games.
You’ll have to complete the game a few times over to reach the fight, but when DK finally hops into the ring, it’s on like something, I can’t remember. Anyway, the red-tied tank can take you down with pretty much any attack, arguably making him the most difficult fight in Punch Out history. Where was that verse in the DK rap?

Poor Luigi, always living in his brother’s shadow. In Super Mario Galaxy, he gets literally lost in space and is taken prisoner at some point. Mario has to rescue him from the Ghostly Galaxy, at which point the green brother will assist him in collecting three stars.
A total of 120 stars and a Bowser fight later, and you can actually play as the other brother. Luigi runs faster and jumps farther, and his Cosmic Form is much smarter than Mario’s. The weird part? Luigi can also rescue Luigi from the Ghostly Galaxy, though his imprisoned twin looks a little ‘off.’ At least he has his own mansion…

Tony Hawk, Bam Margera, Bob Burnquist – these are real, professional skaters. Who better to join them on the halfpipe than Star Wars’ totally out-of-Lucas’-head Darth Maul? Kickflips and grinds are only made cooler with a double-ended red lightsaber in hand. What’s extra cool is that when you select Darth Maul inside the skate shop, the shopkeeper will actually be choking from the Force in the background.
So how do you unlock the Sith fiend? It’s a simple matter of completing all the game’s goals and getting every gold medal as Tony Hawk. Too much? Just use the cheat code YOHOMIES instead.

Once upon a time, the term cyborg called to mind man-machine combinations like Robocop. Those augmented humans boasted the firepower of tanks, but had the limited mobility to match. Flash forward to today, where the current craze in the fictional cyborg community that makes Robocop look like an Apple II. These killers have robotic implants, but that doesnt stop them from learning the art of ninjutsu, or at least the part where you sneak up on someone and stab them in the back.
Currently cyborg ninjas rule the roost in gaming, combining two concepts players love into one silent, deadly, cybernetic package. To prepare yourself for the launch of Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z–2014’s leading cyborg ninja zombie killer–I’ve rounded up the best examples of robo-eyed assassins gaming has ever known. So charge up your sword as we pay tribute to enhanced ninjas like

A member of the Tekken roster since the original entry, Yoshimitsu has retained an air of mystery fitting for a ninja. Weve never really seen his face, his motives and age are hard to discern, and we cant even nail down exactly how many cyborg attachments he has. Based on how he can spin his right arm with unnatural speed (he often uses it like a helicopter), at least that appendage is mechanized, which is enough for a spot on this list.
Though his looks might scare some, at heart Yoshimitsu is less a stealthy murderer than a giving goofball, and thats true no matter the timeline. Whether in Tekken or guest starring in Soucalibur, Yoshimitsu enjoys a good laugh, and is often seen sharing his tournament winnings with the common folk. Its also admirable that hes somehow still a cyborg in Soulcalibur. As implausible as it might seem, his wooden right arm in SC functions almost exactly the same as its modern day equivalent. But weve learned to not question a series with lizard men and swords that can blink.

These guys were some of the earliest gaming combinations of ninjas and robotics, though their look owes more to Predator than Robocop. All three of these Lin Kuei warriors were skilled in the deadly arts, but that wasnt going to cut it in a world where Shao Khan can tear the fabric of reality with his bare hands. The clan elders decided to step up their game with robotic enhancements, including dreadlocks that must have some useful function (that we can’t possibly fathom).
Sektor and Cyrax took the upgrade willingly, while Smoke unsuccessfully tried to reject the procedure due to one of the side effects: it destroys your soul. What did these ninjas get for paying that price? Energy nets, teleportation, and chests with a storage capacity akin to Futuramas Bender. These guys werent the stealthiest of killers, but well give them extra credit for having tech powerful enough to blow up the Earth.

There were cyborg ninjas before Metal Gear Solid came to the PlayStation in 1998, but this robotic ninjutsu practitioner was arguably the first to make the trend famous. At the start of MGS, it seemed hard to believe anyone could be more intimidating than Solid Snake–but Cyborg Ninja surpassed the Foxhound agent immediately with the trail of bloody corpses he left in his wake. Snake was barely able to hold his own against the assassin, and all computer expert Otakon could do was wet his pants in fear.
Beneath his striking white mask and blazing red eye, Cyborg Ninja had the pathos and secret pain youd expect from a Metal Gear character. He was once Foxhound agent Gray Fox, but had been transformed against his will into the cyber monstrosity/badass we all know and love. Eventually he worked against his programming and was committed to stopping instruments of destruction like Metal Gear Rex. In the end, helping Snake defeat the Metal Gear would cost Cyborg Ninja his life, but his sacrifice is fondly remembered by Snake and gamers everywhere.

Natsumes 1990 NES predicts a future that might still come true by 2029, but doesnt seem all that likely. America has been conquered by Lord Garudo, and can only be freed by the combined ninja might of Hayate and is non-enhanced colleague Kaede. The awesomely non-sensical story makes sense for the era it was created, and the same goes for how Hayates cybernetic powers feel like an afterthought.
The US cover art clearly shows Hayate is equipped with a robotic left arm, but it isnt all that clear in the games simple graphics, nor with his shuriken and sword skills that seem pretty average by ninja standards. Even more confusing is the fact that the UK box art also has Hayate with a cyborg arm, only this time its his right appendage. It makes you hope for an HD remake, if for no other reason than to clear up this discrepancy.

Originally a 360 Indie game, this XBLA success story reveled in the hardcore fun of hacking up cyborg ninjas–along with boring, regular cyborgs. The protagonist, a dishwasher turned samurai for the dystopia, wanted to free the world from cyborg oppression, as well as avenge the death of his sister, Yuki. Unfortunately for the dishwasher, one of his most challenging cyborg foes turned out to be his reanimated sister, and he had to de-animate her (so to speak) in his quest to save the world.
Sequels have a way of fixing tragedies like killing your brainwashed sister, and Yuki returned as a co-star in The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile. Now that she was back from the grave, players got to control her devastating combination of sword and chainsaw attacks. Old-school horror fans no doubt appreciated her Evil Dead-like appendage, and Yuki turned that unwanted enhancement back on her enemies with finesse matching her brothers. Perhaps she misses her right hand, but its hard to argue with the results.

Strider might be relegated to cameos and fighting game rosters these days, but there was a time when his futuristic adventures ruled both the Genesis and arcades. The Genesis version was one of the most expensive of its time–clocking in at a cool $80–but it was worth it for the privilege of cutting down robots left and right with Striders electrified blade. Like a ninjariffic Blade Runner, Strider hunted whoever he was told to hunt, and dispatched them down with unmatched skill.
Some sticklers might object and say Strider does have any implants, but merely uses futuristic equipment. We dont buy it. Not only is his grip strength suspect for an unaugmented human, theres the fact that he can call upon robotic animals at a moments notice during a fight. We dont see him holding a remote, so the only logical explanation is that he has some sort of receiver built into his body somewhere. Its just like a ninja to hide his tech upgrades in plain sight.

Yaiba has quite the pedigree for this list. Cyborgs and ninjas are pretty high on the list of disposable game enemies, but these days zombies are the hot trend when it comes to filler bad guys. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z has the creative fearlessness to combine all those clichs into one pissed off assassin. Hes a reanimated, cybernetically altered ninja, and hes cutting through waves of other zombies to get revenge.
You see, Yaiba got his start as one of the faceless ninjas that Ninja Gaidens Ryu Hayabusa kills by the dozens. The newly modified Yaiba is stronger than ever and is ready to hunt down Ryu, but his vengeful quest seems to conflict with an ill-timed zombie outbreak. Can Yaiba cut through enough zombies to finally take another shot at Ryu Hayabusa?

If youre a fan of the brainless fun inherent in chopping down dudes as a cyborg ninja, Deus Exs introspective analysis of the price one pays for the benefits of cybernetic technology is a bit of a buzz kill. Adam Jensen was given a new lease on life after becoming a cyborg, but hes continually questioning the moral rightness of his upgrades, which really gets in the way of having mechanical arms. And its even more of a waste when Adam could be realizing his full potential as a cyborg ninja.
Deus Ex: Human Revolutions impressive openness means you can approach a stage in many different ways, but we dont understand why youd choose anything but the path of the ninja. If you play the level right, Adam can sneak into a building, grab what he needs, and sneak back out, silently cutting the throats of his enemies all the while. Sure, Adam hasnt really earned his diploma from ninja school, but his talent for stealth proves that some of the best cyborg ninjas are self-taught.

Raiden demonstrates that cybernetic upgrades dont just make you a better ninja–they make you more likable too. Raiden was one of the most hated characters in gaming, mostly because he abruptly replaced Snake as the lead in Metal Gear Solid 2, though it didnt help that he was prone to fits of whining. Even though he showed flashes of swordsmanship akin to the beloved Cyborg Ninja, fans rejected him with a passion. Perhaps thats why MGS creator Hideo Kojima decided to try and reform Raiden in the fans eyes, by going all the way with his Cyborg Ninja tribute.
When Raiden burst back onto the stage in Metal Gear Solid 4, he had transitioned into an unbeatable cyborg ninja. You can read the gory details of his transformation here, but the important part is that, from the neck down, Raiden was now an robotic killing machine. His unplayable appearances in MGS4 won him so many new fans, he earned his rightful place as the star of his own game, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Believe it or not, Raiden isnt the only cyborg ninja that appeared in a 2013 title developed by Platinum Games. Januarys Anarchy Reigns has a virtually all cyborg cast, from chainsaw lover Jack to the brute force Big Bull, so theres obviously room for a man of Zeros ninja skills. Like everyone else in the game, Zero is an unrepentant killer, but he does his job with a certain delicacy.
Zero pops in and out of the campaign hunting down AR hero Jack, holding his own for some time until Zero ultimately met the same fate as most people that challenge Jack (grisly death). Zero is also playable in the multiplayer, where people can wield his twin katanas Onimaru and Juzumaru. You know a guy has cut a lot of people in half for money when his swords have names.

Yes, you read that right, there is more than one cyborg ninja named Zero, though this Borderlands character mixes things up by replacing the o with the number. Zer0 joined a team of Vault Hunters searching for loot after growing bored with killing people who wont even fight back. While Zer0 isnt against using a gun, hes more inclined to stab enemies in the back with a laser sword after distracting them with a hologram version of himself.
Zer0 takes the silence of his role somewhat seriously, but he finds clever, internet age workarounds. He never talks, instead replacing speech with pre-recorded haikus and emoticons that pop up on his faceplate. Seeing him text FML when downed fits with the dark comedy of the Borderlands world, as does the fact Zer0 only has four fingers per hand a la Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny. At least youll have a nice chuckle before he disembowels you.

Cybernetic implants are a dime a dozen in the world of Mass Effect, used by soldiers and politicians alike. Many became more efficient killers thanks to the wonders of technology, but Kai Leng took cyber assassinations to a new level. He was so talented that, after a decorated stint as an N7 marine, the Earth-born soldier eventually became the most trusted killer in the employ of the Illusive Man. It seems the two bonded over a shared distaste for aliens.
Kai pops up in some Mass Effect side fiction, but he makes his greatest impact battling Commander Shepard on and off through much of Mass Effect 3. Kai chafes at Illusive Mans decree that he not murder Shepard, but Leng battles Shepards team regardless, ultimately leading to one of the tougher boss fights in the game. Leng ends up losing to Shepard, but youve got to give him credit for dying with a sword in his hand.

Did we miss any cybernetic assassins of note? Tell us in the comments, but before you do, be sure youre suggesting a cyborg ninja and not a robot ninja. Itll take too long to explain intrinsic differences between the two, so do your research first, ok?

]]>I’ve always liked Rain – the purple outfit is a nice, rarely used color for male fighting game characters (or male characters in general) and again, his moves are so weird and confounding that they make every match a constant guessing game. Also, this character has forever infiltrated my mind when it comes to songs about precipitation. Seriously, every one of these is 100% better if you think about Rain the entire time.
Hot on the heels of theKenshiandSkarletDLC releases, NetherRealm is now unleashing Rain, a purple-clad ninja who uses lightning, water and teleportation to confuse opponents. As you’ll see in the trailer, his moves are highly unorthadox; the water ball lets you trap and then physically move the other fighter, and his high kick actually sends opponents flying off one side of the screen and back in through the other in a very “around the world” kind of way. Longtime fans probably remember him from Ultimate MK3 or MK Trilogy. As of July 19, he’s officially part of the new Kombat krew.

Okay, Mortal Kombat. We get the fact that folks get punched, kicked, sliced, chopped and mutilated in a ton of ways. It makes that blood fly, and that blood sure is fun. Know what we think you need, though? Somebody dripping in blood. Nay, how about a fighter made of blood? Got one of those lying around?

BARAKA
——
Baraka is the fiercest of the Tarkatans, vicious nomadic mutants from the
wastes of Outworld. Like all Tarkatan males, he joined Shao Kahn’s army
once he came of age and survived the brutal Ritual of Blood. He gained
the rank of Enforcer after single-handedly defeating a rebel faction. His
loyalty and strength make him a favorite of the emperor; his retractable
blades have slain many of Shao Kahn’s most bitter enemies. As a kontestant
in the Mortal Kombat tournament, he will ensure his emperor’s claim to
Earthrealm.

A skilled Motswana warrior, Cyrax relies on his natural fighting ability,
his chi, to carry out Lin Kuei missions. He is proud to serve, but when
the Grand Master initiates a program to convert the clan into cyborgs,
Cyrax resists. He is reluctant to lose his humanity, which he believes
is more effective than any mechanical augmentation. He has contemplated
leaving the clan, fearing that it is no longer an organization of
honorable assassins. Cyrax knows, however, that such a decision means
death at the hands of his former comrades. No one leaves the Lin Kuei.

JADE

“This will be easy!”
An assassin for Shao Kahn, Jade has earned a reputation as an agile and stealthy
warrior. Her family was Edenian nobility and served the emperor once he
conquered their realm, giving Jade to him as tribute when she was a child.
After years of rigorous training in the art of kombat, Shao Kahn awarded her
the position of Bodyguard to Princess Kitana. Over the centuries she and Kitana
have become close friends, which makes Jade’s secret orders from Shao Kahn
painful to accept: Should Kitana’s loyalty falter, Jade must kill her friend.

JAX
—
“Bring it!”
A decorated member of the U.S. Special Forces and a formidable close-kombat
warrior, Major Jackson Briggs’ current mission is to bring down the notorious
criminal organization known as the Black Dragon. With Lieutenant Sonya Blade,
he has seized many of their weapons caches. But when a trusted informant, Kano,
was revealed to be a high-ranking member of the Black Dragon, Jax made Kano’s
capture his priority. Kano has gotten the better of Jax thus far, leading the
Special Forces into numerous deadly ambushes. Jax and Sonya finally cornered
Kano on an uncharted island but were overpowered by the island’s inhabitants.
They have now been forced into a sadistic ritual of bloody kombat.

“I make this look easy!”
There is no greater martial arts movie star than Johnny Cage. Films such
as “Dragon Fist”, “Time Smashers” and “Citizen Cage” have made him one of
the most highly paid actors in Hollywood. But there is more to Johnny than
even he knows. He is a descendant of an ancient Mediterranean cult who bred
warriors for the gods — warriors who possessed power beyond that of mortals.
This legacy has made Johnny Cage a star. More important, it will aid him in
the battle to come.

ease the pain of dark memories. But when New York was invaded he underwent

Kano was fitted with several high-tech enhancements, most notably his eye
laser. With these new weapons, Kano’s reign of terror has only just begun.

Most of her life she has loyally served her father, Shao Kahn, in his unending

life she has known is a deception. For the moment, Kitana dutifully works to

KRATOS
——
(NOTE: PS3 ONLY)
“You will not see the end of this day!”
Ancient Greece knew no more bloodthirsty a warrior than Kratos, who for a
time was the God of War. Mortal once more, Kratos withdrew from the ages-old
clash between men and gods. But his solitude was broken when he was ripped
through space and time. As the madness subsided, Kratos found himself in
present-day Outworld, kneeling before Shao Kahn. To ensure his victory in
Mortal Kombat, the emperor had invoked an ancient ritual, sacrificing the souls
of his vanguard to summon and enslave the most powerful warrior of all time.
But the spell alone could not contain Kratos, who soon regained his free will.
Enraged by Shao Kahn’s arrogance, Kratos vowed to rip the warlord’s spine from
his body. The God of War had returned to battle.

Kung Lao’s ancestor was defeated by Goro 500 years ago in the pivotal match
that saw Shang Tsung attain control of the Mortal Kombat tournament. To him
this contest is about more than Earthrealm’s freedom. His life’s goal has been
to slay Goro and win the tournament, thus restoring his family’s honor. After
being defeated by Liu Kang in a qualifying bout, he disguised himself as one
of Shang Tsung’s guards to gain admittance. Kung Lao believes he is ready for

LIU-KANG
——–
“Show me what you can do!”
Orphaned at a very young age, Liu Kang was raised by Shaolin monks, who taught
him the way of the spiritual warrior. They soon recognized his potential as a
contender for the Mortal Kombat tournament and rigorously trained him for this
task. Raiden, too, understood that Liu Kang was Earthrealm’s best hope for
freedom and introduced him to Master Bo’ Rai Cho to further his development.
Once fully trained, Liu Kang bested all challengers and earned the high honor
of representing the Shaolin in the Mortal Kombat tournament. He and Raiden then
embarked on their fateful journey to Shang Tsung’s island to compete in this
pivotal kontest.

prone to fits of madness and savagery. Though she has the appearance of a

———
“Ancestors, give me strength!”
Nightwolf is one of few Earthrealm mortals with a strong connection to the
spirit world. A powerful Native American shaman, he is guided by the empyrean
forces and communes with divine beings such as Haokah, known to the East as
Raiden. Nightwolf’s devotion allows the Spirits to work through him, granting
him unnatural long life and ethereal weapons to kombat the darkness that
threatens mortalkind. In the coming crisis, however, it is not Nightwolf’s
arsenal that will alter fate. His faith in the Spirits will inspire those who

Noob Saibot’s origins are unknown, but he is likely a revenant: a fallen
warrior resurrected by the Netherrealm sorcerer Quan Chi to fulfill a dark
objective. Noob has been assigned to aid Shao Kahn in his acquisition of
Earthrealm. A faithful servant and a recent addition to the Brotherhood
of Shadow, he will obey his master, Quan Chi, and complete his mission. But

QUAN CHI
——–
“You will serve me in the Netherrealm!”
(NOTE: To unlock Quan Chi, complete chapter 16 in Story Mode)
The Netherrealm has produced many vile beings, but none rival the
Arch-Sorcerer Quan Chi. In lieu of Netherrealm demons, he prefers to
resurrect deceased warriors for use in his sinister plans. Foremost
among them is the tortured Shirai Ryu ninja Scorpion, who is Quan Chi’s
personal assassin. Quan Chi is building an army of such specters–the
purpose of which has yet to be revealed. Another mystery is the
sorcerer’s involvement in the Mortal Kombat tournament. The Netherrealm
has no stake in its outcome, which leads some observers to question
his presence….

RAIDEN
——
“Thunder take you!”
Raiden is the God of Thunder and Protector of Earthrealm. Ageless and
wise beyond measure, he leads Earthrealm’s mortals in the endless battle
against the forces of darkness. When Shao Kahn, Emperor of OutworlDown,
threatened to merge his realm with Earthrealm, an overwhelmed Raiden
implored the Elder Gods to give Earthrealm a fighting chance. Thus the
Mortal Kombat tournament was created. For millennia Shao Kahn has been
kept at bay, but nine consecutive losses to Goro have eroded hope that
Earthrealm can be saved. Determined to prevent Armageddon, Raiden tirelessly
quests to find a champion worthy of Mortal Kombat.

REPTILE
——-
His home realm of Zaterra is gone, mysteriously destroyed ages ago.
Reptile is the last known surviving member of his race. He has since
made Outworld his home. Shao Kahn has made use of Reptile’s mastery of
stealth to spy on suspected traitors and slay known enemies of the empire.
But the knowledge that he is the last of his kind gnaws at Reptile. He
would give anything, kill anyone, if it would bring his realm back from
the abyss. Self-pity fuels his aggression as he inflicts suffering and
death on others.

]]>With so many missteps since the last major hit, what could the franchise do to regain its former glory? Ignore all the mediocre stuff and take things back to the original three games that started it all.

Above: And that means a lot of blood
For the most part, this new MK sticks to the characters and tone of the first few games, meaning tons of vicious, mean-spirited attacks with just a hint of humor; groin punches and hilariously excessive fatalities are in, farting attacks and tacked-on kart racer minigames are out. Even the roster preys upon the world’s fondness for MK1-3, pulling just about every single character from those early days into one game. It’s clear developer NetherRealm’s goal was to tug at our misty-eyed recollections of the past, and on that front, it totally succeeded.

Above: Classic backgrounds reappear, like this tournament scene from the very first game

Above: The MK2 armory returns with loads more background detail

Above: I’m sure we all remember the Living Forest?

Above: Even MK3’s memorable areas have come back, and in many cases have story-based context now
Beyond the superficial pandering lies a commendably fun scrapper that mixes successful elements of the first three games. Combat falls somewhere in between MK2 and MK3, with emphasis on chaining normal moves into specials; stringing combos together is slightly more freeform than MK3’s infamous “dial a combo” system that only allowed combos with pre-set button combinations, but it’s also not as open to experimentation as say, Street Fighter IV.
Speaking of SFIV, new MK freely cribs from not just Capcom’s workhorse, but also, of all things, Rare’s Killer Instinct. Along the bottom of the screen is a meter that fills up as you deal and receive damage. When one section is full, you can execute an “enhanced” version of any special move your character has; in other words, it’s the same as SFIV’s EX moves, where Ryu’s fireball deals an extra hit or in this case, Kano throws two knives instead of one.

Above: C-C-C-C-etc
Two full sections give you the ability to cancel someone’s combo and break free of their attack. Both enhanced attacks and combobreakers have tactical applications that can increase damage or set up more elaborate moves, so they’re far from copycat afterthoughts. If you refrain from using those moves and fill up the meter completely, you have access to X-ray moves, which are this game’s equivalent to Street Fighter’s big-damageUltra Combos.
All these elements form a game that mostly plays like MK2, just with more juggle, combo and interrupt options. It’s great, flashy fun for button mashers yet rewards those who want to dissect each move and how it reacts with another, so in our opinion that makes this the “best” Mortal Kombat to date. That said, I noticed several instances where moves would connect when they really shouldn’t have, even cases where my fighter would be jumping over another and magically reappear back in front of the computer, somehow being thrown. Most of the time special moves behave like they should, but there were more than a few times were I legitimately could not understand why one move has priority over another, or why the hit range on one move is as wide or tall as it is.
But that’s getting into tournament-level play discussion, which is not how most of us will judge the new Mortal Kombat. And in all fairness, MK has always favored style over substance, and this time the “style” is shredded faces, broken bones and splattered blood, which all combine to create a thoroughly violent experience.

Above: Blood splatters dynamically on your fighter and the opponent, so no two victory screens are quite the same

Above: Take too much damage and the kombatants actually lose pieces of their head and costume
This persistent damage is purely cosmetic, but it does indeed add to the flavor. It helps convey how much these guys are pounding the hell out of each other, and when one finally stands tall as the winner, with his costume tattered and teeth showing through his jaw, it truly feels like a victory. Before, blood flew around the screen for the sake of blood flying around the screen; now, it helps sell the dark, macabre atmosphere.
Topping all this off are the aforementioned X-ray moves, which are devastating new attacks unique to this version of MK. Land one of these suckers and you can deal up to 50% damage, which, while cool for comebacks, is perhaps too much. We want to always have a chance at victory, but uh, some of these moves can turn the tide in a very un-fun way.

Above: Plus how the hell are they walking away from this??
These features make up the guts of the game (no pun int… fuck it, pun intended) and power all the other single and multiplayer components. I’ll get into those on the next page, which are all surprisingly awesome and worth checking out.
