Know your M.O.D.O.Ks from your Mordos? You can prove it as Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, is heading to the web and getting set to host an online Marvel quiz on social media.

Head on over to Tom Holland’s Instagram account (opens in new tab) on Wednesday, April 29 at 12:00 PM Pacific/3:00 PM Eastern/8:00 PM BST and you’ll be able to take part in the pub quiz, which is being run in conjunction with The Brothers Trust, a group spearheaded by Holland and designed to shine a light on charities that need it most.

“This is it not intended as a fundraiser but more a community building exercise for people across the world who might be struggling for things to do at this time and indeed are looking to feel part of something,” reads a post on The Brothers Trust website (opens in new tab) about the aptly-titled The Massive Marvel Online Pub Quiz. “Everyone is very welcome and the more the merrier as we say in the UK.”

Appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel Show (opens in new tab), Holland was keen to point out that community rather than donating to charity is key for the upcoming event: “We felt a little bit uncomfortable asking people for money at this difficult time. So, we as a collective have been doing the donations. The reason why we’re doing the pub quiz is to galvanise people, to give people a sense of community, and to bring people together, and just have a laugh.”

The webhead may not be the best quizmaster, however, after revealing to Kimmel that his online quizzes with Marvel alumni in the past have gone terribly wrong when he was put in charge. “Loads of my questions I got the answers wrong,” Holland admitted.

Maybe this isn’t going to be the best indicator of your Marvel knowledge – but it’s certainly going to be a lot of fun with Spidey putting on a quiz like no other.

Brush up on Marvel’s past, present, and future with these guides.

Thor: Love and Thunder has been announced at San Diego Comic Con 2019. Tessa Thompson will also return as Valkyrie.

Taika Waititi will be back to direct the film, having also helmed Thor: Ragnarok. Waititi apparently moved on from his live-action adaptation of Akira to get to work on Thor 4.

Thor: Love and Thunder, which will take inspiration from Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor run, will reach cinemas November 5, 2021.

While we’ll finally be getting solo movies for Wonder Woman (opens in new tab) and Captain Marvel – the latter of whom was confirmed to be played by Brie Larson (opens in new tab) at San Diego Comic Con (opens in new tab) over the weekend – we’re still waiting for Black Widow to get her standalone due. Joss Whedon directed Scarlett Johansson’s superspy in two Avengers movies, and despite leaving the Marvel fold after Age of Ultron he revealed that he’d relish an opportunity to delve deeper into the character:

“If somebody pointed to me and said, ‘You want to make a Black Widow movie?’ the answer would be ‘Duh.’”, Whedon told IGN (opens in new tab). “For two reasons: I think that character really is very interesting and very earthbound and so it’s the kind of action that I got to do less of with somebody like Thor or The Vision. When you get into your Superman territory it’s harder to maintain that sort of gritty action that the Russo brothers do so beautifully. And she’s got that kind of thing… and really do a spy thriller, really do a good, paranoid sort of John LeCarré on crack sort of thing. Also, Scarlett Johansson is just delightful. She works really hard, but she just spends most of her time cracking me up, so it would be a fun shoot”.

Making the Black Widow movie a spy thriller – a genre mashup that Marvel haven’t tried yet – is a really smart call, and having left Team Iron Man during Captain America: Civil War Natasha is an a really interesting place right now.

The only problem is that it’s currently a little tough to see where Marvel would find the time for a Black Widow movie. Their ‘Phase Three’ schedule is pretty stacked for the next couple years – they have three movies coming out in 2017 and 2018 already – so if Johansson and Whedon ever do get their solo movie it probably won’t be until ‘Phase Four’. I don’t see the demand for a Black Widow movie dissipating between now and then though, so here’s hoping Marvel are as committed as they say they are (opens in new tab) when it comes to delivering the goods.

Directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: Civil War arrives in digital format in the US on September 2. The Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and DVD hit the UK on September 5 and the US on September 13.

We got a look at some concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (opens in new tab) and Doctor Strange (opens in new tab) ahead of this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con (opens in new tab) a few days ago, and today it’s the turn of Luke Cage (opens in new tab). The first series for Harlem’s hero will debut on Netflix later this year, and the first poster has been officially released (via TV Insider (opens in new tab)).

Check it out below…

“There’s always great pressure with superhero posters”, noted Marvel Entertainment chief creative officer – and designer of Luke Cage’s striking one-sheet – Joe Quesada. “You’ve got one shot to encapsulate a character with a pose that’s provocative and that you hope will someday be iconic. Mike [Colter] gives Luke a smouldering strength. He’s sexy and calming. And the ladies love it”.

I’ve been excited about Luke Cage’s solo series ever since Colter made a great first impression in Jessica Jones. It’s going to be really interesting to see how both the character and the world develops, not least because we’re getting closer and closer to The Defenders. Here’s hoping a trailer makes its way online after the show’s Comic-Con panel this weekend.

Starring Mike Colter, Mahershala Ali, Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, Rosario Dawson, Frank Whaley, and Sônia Braga, season 1 of Marvel’s Luke Cage arrives in its entirety on Netflix September 30, 2016.

At this point, any Marvel fan worth their salt knows that it pays to stay in your seat after the credits roll on their latest superhero film. Since Samuel L. Jackson’s eye-patched Nick Fury appeared at the end of 2008’s Iron Man, the studio has become famous for its post-credit scenes. According to The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams however, Star Wars will not be following suit.

At the Los Angeles press conference for the film last Sunday, the director was asked if we could expect any surprises after the credits for the film. The answer was short and to the point: “No. All of the scenes are actually in the movie.” Whether that will hold true for future Star Wars films remains to be seen, but unless you want to acknowledge all the people who worked on The Force Awakens – an admirable endeavour, it should be noted – there’s little point in staying in your seat once the credits begin this time round.

Directed by Abrams and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released in UK cinemas on December 17 2015 before opening in US theatres a day later.

Just as Stan the Man Lee is one of the greatest people to have ever walked the face of the Earth and definitely one of the greatest ever writers of fiction Marvel Comics, with whom he has been inexorably linked for more than 50 years, is a company that has made this world of ours a better place to live in. And thats the gospel truth.

In recent years, Marvel has also triumphed in the cinema, the likes of the Spider-Man and Iron Man films and Avengers: Age of Ultron (opens in new tab) drawing in huge crowds all around the world. Computer wizardry has made it possible for Marvels visions to be magnificently realised on the big screen, in a way they never could be on television in the past.

With a number of projects in planning, including sequels and reboots in most of the major franchises, the future for Marvel is bright. So now seems like a good time to look back at Marvel in the cinema with every film they’ve released so far…

Howard the Duck – 1986

A humanoid duck saves the world. Crass and awful movie for one of Marvels less endearing creations, with a story seemingly aimed at slow five-year-olds, but weirdly done in an adult manner. It sucks, big time.

Director: Willard Huyck, Cast: Lea Thompson, Jeffrey Jones, Tim Robbins, Ed Gale

The Punisher – 1990

An armed vigilante battles city criminals. Based on one of Marvels darkest characters, this serves up nearly non-stop action and doesnt trouble the grey matter too much.

Director: Mark Goldblatt, Cast: Dolph Lundgren, Louis Gossett Jr, Jeroen Krabb

Captain America – 1990

Its Cap to the rescue when the Red Skull kidnaps the US President. A superhero movie that stinks to high heaven its abysmally scripted and produced on a budget of a packet of Twinkies. Action sequences are ham-fisted and repetitive, the hero is limited (to say the least), the plot is inane, even the wardrobe is awful… just complete dreck.

Director: Albert Pyun, Cast: Matt Salinger, Scott Paulin, Kim Gillingham

Blade – 1998

A half-human/half-vampire takes self-loathing to a new level by exterminating vamps he comes across. Wesley Snipes cuts an imposing figure as the Daywalker infused with the superpowers of a vampire, yet without the pesky weaknesses. He shows off some mad moves and goes up against a cocky Dorff who gives great villain. Overall, the film comes off as low-budget despite some great action sequences.

Director: Stephen Norrington, Cast: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Stephen Dorff

X-Men – 2000

Two opposing groups of super-powered mutants battle it out for supremacy. Glossy, watchable action flick with a decent assortment of costumed characters.

Director: Bryan Singer, Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos

Blade 2 – 2002

Blade looks for his lost mentor, Whistler, and then battles Reaper vamps. Del Toro brings his dark aesthetic to the franchise and elevates the quality of the series with his rich attention to detail. He crafts some great visuals, especially the three-ply jaws of the Reapers. Theres more blood and gore with lots of noisy action but the story isnt the most engaging.

Director: Guillermo del Toro, Cast: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Ron Perlman, Leonor Varela

Spider-Man – 2002

A young student is bitten by a radioactive spider which gives him remarkable arachnid powers. He soon has to use them against the evil Green Goblin. Finally this great comic book superhero is done justice on celluloid, not least in the special effects department which convey Spider-Mans movement convincingly. For keen fans of the strip its a fondly assembled treat with a perfect choice of lead actor, and for anyone else, an exciting blockbuster with a good heart.

Director: Sam Raimi, Cast: Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst

Daredevil – 2002

A blind lawyer is also a spectacular costumed superhero. While hardly in Spider-Mans class, this is a half-decent adaptation with some boisterous action Bullseye is particularly lively. The film looks like it was cut down from a greater length and is rather too keen to promise a sequel.

Director: Mark Steven Johnson, Cast: Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Colin Farrell, Michael Clarke Duncan

X-Men 2 – 2003

A fanatical military man attacks Professor Xaviers band of mutants. A superior sequel, for what its worth, which generally succeeds in reproducing a comic-strip vibe. As franchises go, X-Men isnt the easiest to warm to but its aided by the different superpower exhibitions and a starry cast.

Director: Bryan Singer, Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, James Marsden, Anna Paquin, Brian Cox

It may feature a teeny hero, but the new Ant-Man trailer is big on thrills, laughs and cool-looking miniature scraps. While Marvel’s previous trailer for the film was low on content thanks to the beleaguered production schedule, this new trailer more than makes up for that.

“I want you to break into a place and steal something,” says Michael Douglas as he hires Paul Rudd’s ex-con to become a new superhero.

It’s all very tongue-in-cheek, hinting this will be one of the funniest films Marvel has released so far. But sandwiched between Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, there’s a risk Ant-Man could feel like the forgotten Marvel film sneaking in at the end of Phase 2, which is why Hank Pym’s line “If you give godlike powers to everyone, it’s gonna be chaos” is so interesting. Could the events of Ant-Man further fuel the flames that lead to the Superhero Registration Act in Civil War? Regardless, sounds like Hank Pym would be on Tony Stark’s side.

Also, there’s a closing moment that we’re still in stitches over.

Check out the trailer below…

Ant-Man opens in the UK on 17 July.

Sure, playing as Wolverine is fun, but being able to feel immersed in a new character can be even better. Letting us choose our own path and create our own story can make us feel like the character is an extension of ourselves, instead of feeling like we’re a kid running around in a Wolverine costume. This is the promise of Silicon Knights’ X-Men: Destiny: to let us live in the X-Men world in a way that other super-powered games haven’t. To let us make our own choices, customize our own hero, and pave our own destiny. Surprisingly, it just about pulls the concept off… but that’s about all it does right.

X-Men: Destiny takes place out of Marvel continuity in a dark, depressing future in which Professor X has been killed by a robot named Bastion. Things haven’t gone well since the head of the peaceful side of the mutant/human relations movement was cut off – the X-Men have drifted apart, a militant, anti-mutant organization called the Purifiers assaults mutants in the streets, and Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters has been shut down and moved to the earthquake-plagued West Coast. Things reach a boiling point during a rally in San Francisco, where a statue commemorating peace is thrown through the streets in an apparent attack by Magneto, who disappeared after Xavier’s assassination.

But as luck would have it, the mutations of Japanese refuge Aimi Yoshida, meat-head jock Grant Alexander, and anti-mutant extremist Adrian Luca manifested just as the attack began. After choosing between these characters, each with a unique personality and motives, we picked a power – again from a pool of three, and began to draw lines in the sand in a world on the brink of all-out war.

Throughout the game we’re asked to make the occasional moral choices, siding with either the Brotherhood or the X-Men in how we approach different missions. Sometimes it’s a minor decision – do we let the Purifier general live, or do we kill him? Other times it’s more direct, and involves taking a stand beside Magneto or Cyclops. The choices are a far cry from the ones found in games like Mass Effect, Deus Ex, and Infamous, but they’re serviceable in adding some replayability and giving us the feeling we’re involved in the events instead of just watching them unfold.

Also helping us feel connected to our heroes is Destiny’s character customization. While there are only three choices initially, more are unlocked throughout the game, as well as separate skills for each power type, multiple costumes with unique abilities, and collectible X-Genes that allow equipping of offensive, defensive, and utility powers, such as Ice Man’s ability to freeze foes, Wolverine’s regeneration, and Colossus’s durability.

All of the abilities have direct connections to the game’s combat which, while not entirely complex, gets the job done. It plays like a scaled-back God of War, with combo-based attacks and multiple powers that made us feel extraordinarily powerful. By the end of the campaign we felt right at home fighting beside popular characters from the X-Men comics, which is something that many other games have failed to accomplish.

Power doesn’t mean much if we don’t have anything to do with it, though, and that’s where X-Men: Destiny begins to stumble. With the exception of a few interesting boss battles later in the game, most of the encounters are dull. Gaining a new ability enhances the next few fights, but a majority of the battles take place in sectioned-off arenas and had us fighting the same handful of foes from beginning to end. Even with our power growing and new abilities being learned we still handled combat exactly the same throughout. New mechanics arrive rapidly in the first half of the six-hour campaign, but after that it’s just the same battles over and over again.

Even if encounters had been consistently fun, X-Men: Destiny would still simply feel unfinished. The presentation varies between passable and intolerable. It often looks like an HD remake of a last-gen game – some characters, like Cyclops and Magneto look good, with strong character models and impressive voice acting, but others, like Mystique and Emma Frost, look absolutely offensive, with character models that look like they were brought over from a GameCube game. It’s like they had time to go through and finish some of the character models and not others, and it’s quite distracting.

There are even times where the lack of polish bleeds into the game’s cutscenes and makes the story harder to follow. Certain animations are missing entirely, and we were sometimes confused by what characters were talking about as they stood motionless and described things we couldn’t see. Other times they’d talk over each other, making important plot details hard to follow. We were eventually able to figure it out, but it took us out of the moment and represents a level of shoddiness that shouldn’t exist in modern games.

We’re not too sure that a few months of polish could have turned X-Men: Destiny into a great game, but it definitely would have propelled it from a mediocre game to a good one. Some boss battles are absolutely thrilling, and the plot, while somewhat convoluted, definitely feels like a proper X-Men story, but the dull, monotonous battles and lack of polish hamstring the game. It’s a shame, too, because most of the ingredients are here for a fun experience. The characters are different enough that we would have loved to go back and replay the game, and the combat itself isn’t all that bad. It’s just that all of the good ideas are mixed in with dull ones, and the finished product is half-baked, making this an experience worth skipping for all but the most diehard of X-Men fans.
