The Lord of the Rings TV show (opens in new tab) is taking us back to Middle-earth – but likely without many of the iconic characters from Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy (due to the Amazon series taking place thousands of years before the demise of Sauron). Elijah Wood – who played Frodo – recently said, though, that he would welcome the chance to cameo in the show.

IndieWire (opens in new tab) posed the question to Wood on whether he’d be down to reprise his role in the series. His response? “Absolutely.”

“If there was a world where that made sense and was organic to what they’re doing then yes. Look, any excuse to get to go to New Zealand to work on something I am absolutely there,” Wood said.

While there are currently no plans in motion for Frodo to appear in The Lord of the Rings TV series, it’s clear that Wood would jump at the chance if it made sense.

What doesn’t quite compute for the actor, though, is the show title. For now, it’s The Lord of the Rings. Wood has a better suggestion, one that will chime with the Tolkien lore buffs out there.

“They’re calling it The Lord of the Rings, but I think that’s slightly misleading. From what I understand, the material they are working on exists chronologically further back in history in the lore of Lord of the Rings or Middle-earth than any characters represented in Lord of the Rings. It sounds more ‘Silmarillion’ era. Not to get nerdy, but it’s the Second Age of Middle-earth.”

The marketing team might take some umbrage with that suggestion. For now, it’s simply The Lord of the Rings TV series – even if Frodo doesn’t turn up.

The main cast of Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings TV series (opens in new tab) has been announced. The official Twitter account for the series posted a lengthy thread (opens in new tab) naming 15 new actors as part of the fellowship as central characters, including Robert Aramayo, who portrayed a young Eddard Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The complete casting announcement includes Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, and Daniel Weyman.

We’d seen reports about four of the actors – Aramayo, Horvath, Kavenagh, and Mawle (opens in new tab) – joining the cast of The Lord of the Rings, but Amazon hadn’t confirmed their casting until now. Mawle played Benjen Stark on Game of Thrones and is expected to play a major role in The Lord of the Rings, and now another Stark alum is confirmed to the cast with Aramayo in an unnamed role.

Roles for the new cast members haven’t been announced, but a report from THR (opens in new tab) says Mawle will play the series’ villain, Oren. Deadline (opens in new tab) first reported that Aramayo will replace Will Poulter in the Lord of the Rings TV series’ leading role, Beldor. Kavenagh’s character is named Tyra, as Variety (opens in new tab) reported in July.

JD Payne and Patrick McKay serve as showrunners, with prolific Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman stepping in for consulting. Other writers include Gennifer Hutchinson (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), Helen Shang (Hannibal), Justin Dohle (Stranger Things), and Stephany Folsom (Toy Story 4).

We don’t know when the Lord of the Rings TV show will premiere, but it’s likely to be among the best new TV shows (opens in new tab) of the next couple years.
