Marvel sometimes puts fake scenes in its trailers to protect against spoilers. You would have been forgiven for thinking Loki did the same thing – especially as Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief was shown sitting on an Asgardian throne in multiple teasers without that moment coming to pass in the show itself.

Director Kate Herron, though, has revealed in an interview with TV Line (opens in new tab) that any cuts and deleted scenes were all about maintaining the tone of the Disney Plus series.

“They tended to lean a bit more into comedy, and the scenes weren’t bad. But when we were putting the edit together, they were quite near where [Loki] sees Frigga [dying],” Herron said.

“Obviously, we didn’t want to take away from that moment, because it’s his mom dying and it’s very emotional,” Herron continued. “It’s always tricky. The scenes weren’t necessarily not good, but they weren’t quite sitting right. That’s why there’s sometimes bits that people see that don’t end up in the show.”

In previous days, Herron has also teased a little more about what did and didn’t make it into Loki.

One such instance was a planned sequence involving Miss Minutes throwing (clock) hands with Loki and/or Sylvie in the Citadel at the End of Time.

“At one point, we had a fight scene with Miss Minutes in the Citadel; we had all kinds of stuff [for her],” Herron told Marvel’s official site (opens in new tab).

One thing is for certain: Loki season 2 is a-coming. The reveal was rubber-stamped in the finale’s mid-credits sting, but Herron is not returning – despite directing all six episodes of the first season. “I always planned to come in and do this one season,” Herron said.

It may be one-and-done (with a few things left on the cutting room floor), but Herron’s impact cannot be understated: the Loki ending has fully opened up the multiverse, introduced a Thanos-level threat, and set in motion a chain of events that could completely change the MCU as we know it.

Xbox has designed new controllers themed around Loki variants from the MCU TV show.

Just yesterday on July 14, Xbox posted the tweet just below through their official Twitter account, showcasing the four new Xbox Series X controllers themed around each variant of Loki. This was to coincide with the release of the season finale of Loki, which just wrapped up yesterday on Disney Plus.

There’s a controller for every variant pic.twitter.com/t1WLMt1jf8July 14, 2021

Bad news if you’re looking to get your hands on these however: they’re not actually for sale. However, through Xbox’s new initiative, which allows anyone to customize a new Xbox Series X controller for purchase, you can pretty accurately recreate any one of the four controllers depicted above.

This new creation by Xbox is actually called the Xbox Design Lab. Note that, although you can customize your own Xbox Series X controller with whatever color scheme you can imagine and then order it, it’ll cost a fair bit more than your average Xbox Series X controller, if you were to purchase the controller without any customization straight from Xbox.

If you’re unfamiliar with what these four new controllers are referencing, then you’ve got a fair bit of catching up to do. Loki just rounded out its debut season on Disney Plus after six episodes, as Tom Hiddleston’s mischievous character got up to no good once again, this time surrounded by Lokis from alternate realities and dimensions, like Alligator Loki and Richard E. Grant’s Classic Loki, to name but a few of the bunch.

If you enjoyed the latest Disney Plus offering, then good news, because Loki is coming back for a sophomore season. Right now, there’s no information on when the forthcoming season will be gracing our screens, or even when it’ll start filming, but it’s welcome news for anyone who enjoyed the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s decidedly weird new foray.

But if you were left a bit confused by all the goings on in the final few episodes of Loki though, allow us to fill in the gaps. You can head right over to our Loki Sylvie explainer, our breakdown of the Loki ending, or our guide on the background of Morbius throughout Marvel’s comics.

The saga of Mobius M. Mobius keeps getting stranger.

Owen Wilson’s breakout performance as a brand new MCU character in Disney Plus’ Loki quickly garnered him a legion of fans despite his lack of flash as an action-oriented superhero.

Mobius may strike the image of a high school history teacher, but he’s proven his worth both as a badass field analyst and something of an armchair psychologist, managing to get inside Loki’s head and maybe even more remarkably, making a genuine friend of the Norse god of mischief and the MCU’s foremost lovable miscreant.

Spoilers ahead for Loki episode 6.

Now that Loki season 1 is a wrap and it’s public knowledge that a season two is coming, we can almost certainly expect Mobius to return sooner (in a film?) or later (the next Loki season?).

Well, a Mobius will return anyway.

What do we mean? Well, you’re gonna keep reading for that 411, but suffice it to say, Mobius has one of the most peculiar comic book histories at Marvel and Marvel Studios seems to be adapting him embracing that spirit.

Whatever happens with him next, Loki season 1 seemed to suggest at his core, Mobius is just a flat-out good guy in the end.

So check out Newsarama’s recap of Mobius’ comic book history for clues as to when and where he may show up next in the MCU and in what role.

Who is Mobius M. Mobius in Marvel comic books?

Image of Mobius M. Mobius

Mobius M. Mobius – ‘Moby’ to his pals – is one of the uncountable number of bureaucrats working for the Time Variance Authority, a sort of cosmic organization with nebulous origins which exists outside of time, and true to its name monitors and fixes trouble in the timestream.

Nearly all of the agents of the comic book TVA are clones, genetically engineered to serve their specific functions in the organization under so-called lifetime employment, rising through the infinitely vast ranks of the TVA until they are killed or meet some other fate.

In the case of Moby (we’re all friends here right?), he started out in middle management before rising all the way to the rank of one of the TVA’s judges of time-based crimes thanks to his eidetic memory for facts and minutiae.

It’s in this capacity that Moby (it’s growing on us, we’re starting to think less of the ’90s singer now) has had most of his encounters with the Marvel Universe at large – though not with Loki, whose comic book relationship with the TVA is limited to a few panels.

Instead, Moby (fits like a glove now!) spent a good portion of his time chasing down Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four, trying to make him and his team take responsibility for their own time-breaking shenanigans.

Reed Richards, screw around willy-nilly with fundamental forces beyond his control? The hell you say! The MCU is in for a whirlwind when he debuts.

First appearing in 1991’s Fantastic Four #353 (opens in new tab) from writer/artist Walt Simonson, Mobius M. Mobius was one of the managers who dispatched Justice Peace (the first TVA agent to appear, also created, as was the TVA itself, by Simonson) to bring in the members of the FF. The Fantastic Four naturally resisted, and Moby became something of a recurring nemesis for the team as he managed to move up in the TVA’s ranks despite his failure to capture the FF.

Ironically, it was actually the Fantastic Four who wound up helping Moby get his promotions, as they helped him apply for work in Chronopolis, the far-flung future city ruled by Kang the Conqueror. In business terms, Moby leveraged his offer from Kang to garner a promotion from the TVA, which set him on his upward trajectory from then on.

Later, Moby (that’s the Honorable Judge Mobius M. Mobius to you!) was one of the judges who presided over the trial of Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk in the story She-Hulk: Time Trials (opens in new tab) – and the only judge at the trial to survive the attack of the villain Clockwise, who She-Hulk defeated to earn her freedom.

And that’s pretty much where comic books left Mobius M. Mobius – although, with time travel and the TVA involved, it’s not so much a matter of if he’ll return, it’s a matter of when.

Mobius M. Mobius in the Marvel Universe

So what was with all that stuff about our dear pal Moby – or the guy he’s based on – having a lot to do with the state of the current MCU?

Mobius M. Mobius was Loki’s liaison with the TVA and the agent who recruited him to help apprehend another variant of Loki. Played by Owen Wilson, the MCU character is the spitting image of the comic book version, down to his charming mustache.

Oddly enough, Moby’s comic book appearance is itself based on a real person – none other than long-time Marvel Comics writer and editor Mark Gruenwald, whose years-long run on Captain America introduced the character of John Walker and formed the basis of much of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Likewise, Gruenwald’s work on the Avengers, which helped define the powers and origin of the Scarlet Witch including tying in the Darkhold to her history, was hugely influential in the story of WandaVison.

Known for his almost encyclopedic knowledge of and memory for the history of Marvel Comics, Gruenwald started as an editor for the publisher in 1978. Following a brief diversion as a penciler (including a few illustrations for DC’s Who’s Who character guide), Gruenwald began contributing to Marvel Comics as a writer in the early ’80s alongside his editorial duties.

Like Mobius M. Mobius, Gruenwald became known at Marvel Comics for his nearly inexhaustible knowledge of the publisher’s characters and history, eventually taking a position as Marvel’s executive editor while also writing his seminal Captain America run.

When Walt Simonson created Moby, he drew on the demeanor and encyclopedic mind of his pal and co-worker Mark Gruenwald, paying homage to Gruenwald’s behind-the-scenes role as Marvel’s unofficial keeper of continuity for the character – right down to Mobius M. Mobius being depicted on the page as a caricatured version of Gruenwald himself. In fact, an editor’s note from editor Ralph Macchio (not the Karate Kid) in Fantastic Four Annual #24 (opens in new tab) describes the TVA as “sort of the Mark Gruenwalds of time continuity.”

And, though he didn’t create the TVA, Gruenwald did create the Time-Keepers – also a presence in Loki – a group who predate the Time Keepers in the real world, and who have in-continuity ties to the TVA’s future.

Funnily enough, Gruenwald himself played into his own pastiche, writing Mobius M. Mobius in 1994’s Fantastic Four Annual #27 (opens in new tab), which depicted another attempt to bring in the FF. In this story, Gruenwald introduces another executive of the TVA, his boss Mr. Alternity.

This is where things get hilariously meta.

As Mobius M. Mobius was based on Marvel editor Mark Gruenwald, Gruenwald himself based Mr. Alternity on his own boss Tom DeFalco, who was then serving as Marvel’s editor-in-chief. So Gruenwald wrote a fictional version of himself dealing with a fictional version of his own boss, that his boss then had to edit.

Since these stories, just about all the agents of the TVA have been visually based on Gruenwald and DeFalco, who actually appeared as themselves in editorial comic strips that once ran inside Marvel Comics, in the classic Bullpen Bulletins section.

Mobius M. Mobius in the MCU

Meta commentary aside, Mobius M. Mobius could have an ongoing role in the MCU following Loki. Since there theoretically could be infinite numbers of TVA agents who look like him (and we’ve already seen at least one Mobius variant in Loki episode 6), there’s nothing but potential to bring the character back – or to have him spread out throughout the MCU’s other shows and movies.

Now, of course, for the moment, the Loki season one finale seems to set up Mobius’ immediate future.

Losing a physical fight with Ravonna in short order, Mobius expects to be pruned again like in episode 4, but his former boss (who displays genuine affection for him) spares him and makes her escape, seemingly off to seek the power to control the ‘sacred timeline’ by herself.

We don’t catch up with Mobius again until the final seconds of the episode when Loki seeks him out at the TVA having just been expelled by Sylvie from the secret boss of the TVA He Who Remains’ Citadel at the End of Time, just before she kills He Who Remains.

But there’s a twist.

still from Loki episode 6

(opens in new tab)

When Loki finds Mobius (and Hunter B-15), he discovers they don’t recognize him, and Loki is in a TVA headquarters in which classic Avengers villains Kang (who is a variant of He Who Remains) is in charge, spelling trouble for the MCU.

Whether Loki is in another variant timeline where there is also a variant TVA or Kang rewrote the ‘sacred timeline,’ remains to be seen.

So it appears wherever Loki and Mobius appear next, they’re going to have to establish their friendship and rapport all over again and interestingly somewhat in reverse, with Loki likely having to try to win Mobius’ trust.

Though his comic book history isn’t as dense as many of the other characters that the MCU adapts, Mobius M. Mobius plays a pretty unique role in Marvel lore and has the comic book story connections to find his way into many of the MCU’s upcoming properties when the cliffhanger Loki story resolves itself.

For one thing, there’s Moby’s whole relationship with the Fantastic Four – soon to make their MCU debut. With very little known about how director Jon Watts will bring the FF to the MCU, and the Multiverse/alt-timelines seemingly only becoming more prevalent, it’s entirely possible that Moby or the TVA could play a role in bringing them into the story.

And of course, there’s Moby’s other big comic book connection, his appearances in She-Hulk as one of the judges at her trial.

She-Hulk has her own MCU show coming up on Disney Plus starring Tatiana Maslany in the title role of Jennifer Walters, lawyer-plus-superhero. Many of her most prominent comic book stories revolve around bizarre meta concepts like the TVA, who are central characters in at least one volume of her solo comic book title, including Mobius M. Mobius himself. That may just pave the way for an onscreen She-Hulk connection too.

Mobius M. Mobius

(opens in new tab)

We also have to mention Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Though Strange and Mobius M. Mobius don’t particularly have any comic book ties, the film seems to be one of the most prominent places Marvel Studios will explore the concept of the Multiverse, potentially paving the way for someone with Mobius’s knowledge of the Multiverse to appear.

Reports are surfacing Tom Hiddleston will appear in The Multiverse of Madness and since Loki was last seen in his company, Wilson could conceivably show up too.

And finally, there’s the time Moby applied for a job in Kang’s empire. Kang himself will be the villain of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, played by Jonathan Majors, who pulled double duty as the Kang variant (or is the other way around?) He Who Remains.

The bottom line is, with multiverses, alternate timelines, clones, and more involved, Mobius M. Mobius could potentially go anywhere – or anywhen – in the MCU and provide connective tissue between the franchise’s various films and shows. And that’s saying nothing of what could be possible if Marvel Studios picks up the metatextual storytelling traditions that Mobius M. Mobius carries in comic books.

Of course, it should also be noted that Loki episode 4 reveals Mobius is just a variant of a real human person that had a life but was mind-wiped to serve He Who Remains’ TVA. So he has a whole backstory to be told.

So while Mobius’ future as a timeline-hopping TVA analyst in the MCU still has significant questions marks surrounding it, Wilson’s winning portrayal seems to have garnered the new character an MCU fanbase and Marvel Studios will almost certainly find a place for him in the ‘future.’

Almost all of the Loki pre-release material only includes footage from the first three episodes. So, if you’re like us, you’re probably desperate for any scrap, hint, or morsel from the second half of the Disney Plus series.

Marvel Studios has, mercifully, oh-so-briefly teased us with a new featurette that showcases some new scenes from upcoming episodes – and even finds time to debunk one of the show’s earliest and wildest theories.

Possible spoilers for Loki follow. If you want to go in blind, look away now!

The new Loki teaser focuses on the MCU’s new arrival, Sophie Di Martino’s Sylvie (AKA Lady Loki). There are a smattering of new scenes sprinkled throughout the minute-long preview, including another heart-to-heart between Loki and the Variant on what appears to be the purple-hued planet of Lamentis.

“The universe wants to break free so it manifests chaos, like me,” Sylvie says while perched next to Loki. The words may yet hint at some larger design, but it’s the setting that intrigues most. This is official confirmation that the mysterious woman spotted in one of the very first Loki trailers is, in fact, Di Martino’s character and not Black Widow on Vormir – as some had theorized.

The featurette also reveals that we’re likely to delve into Sylvie’s own past in a flashback scene in the coming weeks. Di Martino says “the audience will be intrigued by Sylvie’s arc and the backstory,” while focusing on a young girl in Loki-style garb.

At the risk of putting two and two together and getting 14,000,605, there’s every chance more of Sylvie’s own history will be explored in the coming weeks.

Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has been in the spotlight all this time, and it could be time for Sylvie to spill the beans on her past as the TVA closes in on the Stage 10 apocalypse. That, when coupled with a new scene that hints at Loki and Sylvie’s arrival at the Time-Keepers’ doorstep (check out that blueish glow and TVA bodies littered on the floor) indicates that the clock is well and truly ticking for everyone involved.

Catch up on the MCU story so far with our guide on how to watch the Marvel movies in order.

The Loki episode 2 ending marks a definitive shift in the Disney Plus show. Not only has a villain been revealed – the identity of which is very much TBC, as you’ll soon find out – but a major plan has been set into motion that could have serious aftershocks in the MCU-at-large.

If you’re still reeling from the final scene, completely transfixed by the cliffhanger, or just want the lay of the land before Loki’s next episode – here’s our guide to the Loki episode 2 ending: why it matters, what it all means, and how important it could be for Marvel’s future.

Major spoilers for Loki episode 2 (and possibly beyond) follow. You have been warned!

Who is Lady Loki?

Lady Loki

The identity of the Loki ‘Variant’ has been revealed. Maybe.

At the end of the episode, the hooded figure who had been possessing people and running amok everywhere from 1980s renaissance fairs to the not-too-distant future was finally unmasked: a blonde woman, played by Sophia Di Martino, is seen with a familiar looking horned helmet and cloak.

This could be Lady Loki, a character from the comics who – in the pages of Marvel’s works – is actually Loki inhabiting a woman’s body. This variation on Disney Plus is an entirely new character and could be hinting at a multiverse of characters all similar by nature but unique in their own way.

It would certainly line up with the different ‘type’ of Loki that has been causing chaos. Earlier in the episode, we caught a glimpse of other different Lokis, from a Troll Loki to what looks to be a Loki as a professional cyclist. Is Lady Loki just another ‘flavor’ of Loki that’s been running around?

Maybe not. **Potential spoilers for future episodes** The end credits have revealed that Sophia Di Martino’s character is actually called “Sylvie” – which could be a reference to comic character Sylvie Lushton, AKA The Enchantress. If that’s the case, that would mean there might still be another Loki Variant out there causing mischief and using Sylvie as a means to an end.

Lady Loki’s powers: is she possessing people?

Loki episode 2 ending

Throughout the episode, Lady Loki (we’ll keep calling her that until we officially hear otherwise in the show) is seen possessing people Scarlet Witch-style with just a touch of the hands. Everyone from Hunter C-20 to Randy the Roxxcart clerk fell victim to being possessed by Lady Loki, hinting that her magic is at the very least close to the power levels of a Loki, Scarlet Witch, or Agatha Harkness.

When coupled with her possible Enchantress origins, there’s every chance that Lady Loki will be pulling out every (literal) trick in the book to stay one step ahead of the TVA. Possession might just be one aspect of her skillset. Expect the likes of illusion, enchantment, and more mind control to come.

Lady Loki’s plan: timeline bombs and Reset Charges

Loki episode 2 ending

Lady Loki already has one trick. In episode 2’s final moments, her first grand scheme starts rolling: a series of Reset Charges are placed around Roxxcon’s store floor and filled with some sort of swirling purple energy. Then, they are each put through a portal.

So, what happened? For the moment, the specifics are unclear but the general consensus is Lady Loki’s plan is designed to cause as much chaos as possible and to throw the Time Keepers’ vision into disarray. Loki, of course, values chaos over order.

By putting Reset Charges into different periods in history, it appears to cause havoc with the main ‘Sacred Timeline’. Events that were supposed to have happened now may not have done or will occur slightly differently. After all, Reset Charges from 2050 helping to reset some things in the distant past is something that is surely not meant to occur on the main timeline. Either that, or the Reset Charges have been reverse-engineered to un-reset the splintered timelines before it. We’ll have to wait until next week to find out the sepcifics.

What is happening to the Sacred Timeline?

Loki episode 2 ending

This could all, in turn, lead to some multiverse-based shenanigans. The motivations and the exact specifics of Lady Loki’s Reset Charge-based plan may not be obvious, but the end result is. The Sacred Timeline is seen branching off back at TVA HQ. Several Nexus Events are taking place from locations on Earth and even further afield on planets such as Thanos’ homeworld of Titan, which means that Variants could be running around in different versions of the timeline without being brought to heel by the TVA.

In effect, that’s very, very bad news. We’ll wait to see what the end result is, but this could be the start of blurring the lines between universes and alternate timelines, as well as properly introducing the concept of the multiverse into the MCU.

Why did Loki follow Lady Loki?

Loki episode 2 ending

Honestly? It’s just Loki being Loki. Mostly, though, curiosity is getting the better of the God of Mischief. After finding out about the events of Thor: Ragnarok, Loki has turned from trickster into somewhat of a team member. Our Loki, for sure, has his own motives, but getting to the heart of the mystery is probably at the forefront of his mind right now. Where they’re heading to is another matter – and something we’ll find out about in the third episode.

For more on the show, check out the Loki Easter eggs that have been found so far, as well a compelling theory that suggests the TVA might not all be as it seems. And while you’re here, get ahead of the game with the latest Prime Day TV deals before next week’s inevitable rush.

Loki could be heading to Fortnite at some point in the near future.

Yesterday, Epic Game’s Fortnite updated to v16.50, and as you’d expect leakers have been busy rummaging through the nooks and crannies of the game. As noticed by ESTNN (opens in new tab), one leaker known as HYPEX seems to have pulled a loading screen that shows a silhouette of Loki (opens in new tab).

Although, HYPEX followed that up with another look at the same loading screen that also appears to include a silhouette for Thor (opens in new tab). Although if it is Thor, it could be a Marvel Cinematic Universe styled skin as Thor’s comic-themed skin has already been available in Fortnite.

Fans of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe will know that a standalone series based on Loki is to launch next month on Disney Plus. With Epic Games seemingly planning to have Fortnite and Marvel plans for “many, many, many years”, this could tie in as a promotion for the series. As of right now, there’s no official confirmation that Loki is heading to Fortnite.

We have seen leakers in the past uncover skins, such as a possible Ant-Man skin at the time, which turned out to be true when the skin became available back in March. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania isn’t set to release until next year.

Outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe skins, Fortnite has seen skins for popular video game characters recently, such as Lara Croft, Master Chief, Aloy, and even Kratos

Stopwatches at the ready. If you don’t have time to catch up with the God of Mischief’s, many, many betrayals and brotherly encounters across the MCU before his own series hits Disney Plus next month, you’re in luck. Tom Hiddleston has provided the goods, recapping Loki’s Marvel journey in just under 30 seconds.

Hiddleston, inevitably, takes some liberties with plot details. From Asgardian outcast to fugitive, he races through the events of Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame in record time. But there can’t be a Loki recap without some underhanded behavior. Hiddleston stops at the 28-second mark to take a big breather before unveiling the next chapter in Loki’s story: his temporal run-in with the Time Variance Authority and Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius.

The Loki series, though, is set to have a less-than-linear approach to that whole time thing. He’s been seen in recent teasers and trailers flitting about between time and space, essentially as the MCU’s answer to Doctor Who – which we’re completely on board with.

But trust Loki to start messing with time, even in our world. The series will air on Disney Plus on Wednesdays starting from June 9. That’s a marked departure from Marvel’s first two efforts, WandaVision and Falcon and The Winter Soldier, filling up our Fridays with a dose of MCU magic.

The Loki trailer that was revealed during the Disney Investor stream was a surprise in and of itself – but trust the God of Mischief to have a few tricks and surprises up his sleeve.

Towards the end of the trailer for the Disney Plus series, a mysterious woman can be spotted sat down near some pipes while lights surround her.

Of course, fans – now adjusted to searching every frame for MCU clues – were sent into overdrive. The prevailing theory being that it was Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow coiled and ready for action.

It’s not a stretch to suggest Loki would bump into Black Widow at some stage. After all, Tom Hiddleston’s trickster is already seen bouncing around time – including 2012’s Avengers Assemble – in the trailer. Couple that with the purple-hued environment looking decidedly similar to Nat’s final resting place in Avengers: Endgame and it appears to be a watertight theory.

However, there’s another woman in the frame – Sophia Di Martino’s unknown character. She was previously spotted in set photos in a costume that indicates we’re seeing Lady Loki being pulled from the comics and into Marvel’s on-screen adventures.

That would certainly be more likely than having Black Widow return after her story is seemingly being tied away with her own standalone movie this May. Or maybe, just maybe, Kevin Feige and company are taking a leaf out of the Asgardian’s playbook and confusing us until the very end.

We’ll find out when Loki hits Disney Plus this May. For more on Marvel’s future, check out our complete guide to Marvel Phase 4.
