This Breath of the Wild player is teaching a bunch of fun new ways to kill Guardians every day.

Breath of the Wild’s Guardians are probably the most obnoxious enemies in the game. It’s not that they’re particularly hard – once you get the hang of the shield parry, they’re a breeze to kill – it’s just that they can’t always be ignored, forcing you to stop what you’re doing, equip a disposable shield, and dispatch them just so you can carry on with whatever you were doing. And heaven forbid you mess up the timing and get hit by their laser beam, which knocks you down and does a heck of a lot of damage for such a common enemy.

Anyway, the next time you’re out in the wild and come across one of these suckers, perhaps try taking a page from Redditor DonkeyKindly7310, who’s made it their mission to kill a Guardian in a different way “until it’s over the top.” The first day (opens in new tab), they employed the tried-and-true shield method described just above, which the player notes will work just fine even using a pot lid on Master Mode. The second day (opens in new tab) of their campaign showcased another popular method: shoot ’em in the eye until they die.

The third day is where things take a turn toward the unconventional, which of course is where things get really fun. In this clip, you can see the player use stasis to freeze a steel crate and then whack at it a bunch of times with a boulder breaker before shooting it with an arrow. When the stasis effect ends, the crate ploughs into an unsuspecting Guardian at such a velocity that its legs go all wonky and stretchy. A few seconds later you can see the Guardian hurling through the air toward infinity.

The third method (opens in new tab) shows another quick and efficient way to take down Guardians without having to potentially break a good shield. The most recent video, however, might be the most amusing. Here, the player toys around with Guardians like they’re play things, and toward the end you almost feel bad for the octopods… almost.

Check it out:

Who knows how long this can go on? DonkeyKindly says they have 10 videos recorded, which means another five videos are already in the bag, ready to be released. Hopefully we’ll see even more than that as they continue experimenting with those Guardians’ poor, worthless lives… Is that too far?

In the meantime, watch this Breath of the Wild speedrunner beat every shrine without using runes.

Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild hacks and exploits are something the community has taken to like octoroks to water, not hacking the game via code, but combining special mechanics and in-game physics to create whole new ways of solving problems, beating enemies and exploring the world of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (opens in new tab). From makeshift vehicles to weaponised poultry, we can’t imagine Nintendo ever had these in mind, but damned if they don’t look pretty fun to try out.

These are the most creative things I’ve seen in Breath of the Wild so far. Good luck trying to copy these.

Magnesis Airship takes Link to new heights

Galloping around Hyrule on your trusty steed is a fantastic way to see the sights, but it doesn’t come close to taking to the skies and enjoying the sweeping plains and landscaped vistas with your very own flying machine. YouTuber mety333 devised one of my favourite inventions, putting both the paraglider and the Magnesis Rune to fantastic use. The flying machine can be made by combining one metal block and a discarded mine cart and is controlled by magnetizing the mine cart with Link’s Magnesis Rune. Once you have reached the highest point, simply jump off and paraglide your way around Hyrule. Just make sure you cook up a bunch of stamina boosting meals and potions to avoid making a Link size imprint in the ground below. Be sure check out this handy cooking guide to ensure you’re best prepared before for your flight.

Bringing Mario Kart to Hyrule

Considering just how large the map in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is, why not cruise around Hyrule in style? Before you start zooming around the lush green plains and rocky mountains, the following materials are required. Thankfully, the list is short and the materials are easy to acquire, as the go-kart only requires: one metal treasure chest and a mine cart. Both these items can be found in the northern part of the map on Death Mountain. Once you’ve located the items needed, simply place the chest in the front of the Kart with your Magnesis Rune and use it to propel yourself forward. It’s not perfect, as it’s all too easy to push the chest out of its socket, especially when you’re on uneven terrain, but with a little practice you’ll be tearing through Hyrule in no time.

Crafty climbing

Climbing towers and scaling mountains doesn’t always need to be arduous, as a Japanese Twitter user found out. Kfurumiya used Link’s Magnesis and Remote Bomb to turn a humble tree into a useful climbing aid. The player cuts down the tree and lets it fall on top of the bomb, before applying Magnesis on the log, freezing it in place while Link slashes at it with his sword. Just before the timer runs out, Kfurumiya activates the bomb which launches Link into the clouds above. The temporary boost gives Link enough time to jump off the log and begin his flight towards the tower. This simple technique can be used almost anywhere and is especially helpful when dealing with some of the game’s trickier towers and obstacles.

Cooking up a Cucco storm

Attacking a Cucco in any Zelda game is not only incredibly mean, but it will also cause the normally docile chickens to become utterly ruthless in their pursuit for revenge. When provoked, the Cucco will call upon the entire flock to raise hell from the skies, forcing the player to run away as fast as they can or seek shelter from their onslaught. This has led to players using Hyrule’s feisty birds to take down all manner of enemies, especially those that prove rather troublesome. Simply grab a Cucco from a nearby town or village, put it in front of an attacking enemy, and let the poultry storm begin. The Master Sword may be more efficient at killing enemies, but the Cucco’s certainly provide a more humorous way to settle a fight.

Shrine shortcuts

Breath of the Wild’s shrines offer a variety of puzzles and challenges that most players need to solve in order to obtain what lies within them. However, some folks have figured out ways to break shrines in ways that allow them to skip certain trials. There are many elaborate ways to exploit the physics within Breath of the Wild, but the most common shrine skips utilise shield jumps and bomb boosting. Shield jumping gives Link a double jump, while the use of the Remote Bomb gives Link an added boost. YouTuber Adrylek has a whole host of videos dedicated to finding unique ways to solve Breath of the Wild’s various shrines. The video above for example, uses Cryonis to give Link some added height before using a shield jump and bomb to launch him into the locked room. Shrine skips have become extremely popular and they are one of the ways that show off just how creative Breath of the Wild’s community really is.

Hylian crafted fireworks

There are no tricky mechanics needed to make this pretty fireworks display, but there are some expensive and very rare items involved. Dragon Horns are the main ingredient here and they just happen to be one of the most valuable items in the game. These horns can be used to upgrade various armour and provide 30 minute boosts when cooked into recipes, so blowing them up is usually the last thing on most people’s minds. Collecting the horns also takes a lot of time as well, especially when you consider that Link can only collect one horn from each dragon per in-game day. However, YouTube user GirKart64 showcased that blowing up a bunch of these prized horns can make for a rather pretty spectacle. If you have a bunch of unused horns lying around, why not have a crack at lighting up the night sky?

Battle of the behemoths

Part of what makes Breath of the Wild such a joy to play is the interaction the various enemies have with the world around them. Watching a pack of Bokoblins trying to hunt a wild boar or seeing them dance around a crackling fire makes the world feel alive. However, Breath of the Wild’s baddies don’t really interact with one another, unless you happen to lead a Stone Talus into a Guardian’s territory. YouTube user Tristan Cooper captured the moment he provoked these two behemoths into fighting one another. Both originally had their sights firmly trained on Link, but this all changed when the Stone Talus accidentally hit the Guardian with a rocky blow. The ancient machine tries to respond by firing its deadly laser, but it’s unable to target Talus’ weak spot and instead lays motionless on the floor. There’s something rather nice about seeing a Guardian being launched across the field, especially since their deadly lasers led to many of Link’s deaths.

An expert Breath of the Wild player reacted beautifully to a Moblin throwing a Bokoblin their way, turning the potentially perilous situation into a friendly game of baseball. Well, it’s friendly for the player and the Moblin – not so much for the unlucky Bokoblin who gets snatched up, hurled into the air and parried off a cliff by the player. What a way to go.

If you’ve never seen a Moblin use a Bokoblin as a projectile, this video will likely be a treat right off the bat, but it gets even better when the player sees what’s coming, whips out their shield, and executes a flawless parry that deflects the poor Bokoblin into the air. The Boko nearly recovers from the humiliating attack, but the momentum from the parry sends it tumbling over a massive cliff. But don’t worry, it probably died of embarrassment long before the fall.

In the agonizing wait for Breath of the Wild 2which is reportedly still on track to launch in 2022 – people are constantly experimenting in Breath of the Wild and sharing their discoveries online. One recent example reveals a handy magnesis trick to turn off Guardians’ brains and give you some extra time to down them. If you’re truly desperate for something to do, here’s a Breath of the Wild glitch you can exploit to fly around the map without a paraglider.

If you think you’ve done all there is to do in Hyrule, here are some games like Zelda to give a try.

Breath of the Wild’s ice arrows can put an end to accidental horse death, if you’re quick and accurate enough.

If you’ve been playing Breath of the Wild long enough, you probably know better than to leave your horse near a cliff. Horses are easily startled, and all sorts of loud noises will send them leaping tragically to their deaths, but as long as you’ve got a bow and an ice arrow equipped, you can prevent these accidents from having an animal toll.

As Redditor TheAmazingDraco demonstrates in this video, if you’re quick enough on your feet, you can shoot an ice arrow at your horse to break their fall before it makes impact. It’s probably a terrifying few moments for the horse – first falling off a cliff and then being shot by an arrow and frozen solid just before hitting the ground – but at least they’re alive. And that’s one less visit to the Horse God Malanya for you.

It’s worth reminding in any story like this that Breath of the Wild is approaching its fifth anniversary, and players are still finding little tricks largely unknown to the general public. Sometimes it’s an intended feature like this cute little musical flourish that you might’ve missed or this new updraft technique, and other times it’s a glitch that lets Link fly around the map without a paraglider. Though, it’s hard to deny that this particular finding is one of the more humanitarian the community has come across, as it could prevent the needless deaths of countless jumpy Eponas.

Even if there’s still plenty to discover, here are some games like Zelda to play once you’ve seen enough of Hyrule.

Almost five years from launch, Breath of the Wild speedrunners have figured out how to fly, and they are absolutely wigging out.

The “sky gliding” exploit was first discovered over the weekend by Twitter user LegendofLinkk, who was kind enough to share some pretty intricate instructions on how you can take to the skies as Link in Breath of the Wild yourself. In our testing, GamesRadar found the exploit to be very accessible, even to someone who’s never messed around with Breath of the Wild glitches before.

All you need to do is equip a bow and shield, place a bomb right in front of link in a way that it won’t move from its position, hold ZL so that Link is using his shield, then hit ZR and A really quickly while still holding ZL. The timing of that step is crucial, as you need to almost roll into A from ZR for it to work. If you see Link holding the bomb and his bow over his head, you’re on the right track.

Now, jump, and while in midair, press B and start at the same time. This should unequip your bow without dropping the bomb. While you’re on the pause screen, unequip your shield and unpause, and you’ll see Link standing with the bomb and bow overhead again. Finally, aim your bow but cancel the shot with B, and then walk onto the ledge at the end of the tower while holding B and the directional pad. Off you go! (You can also check out tutorials from JoeDun (opens in new tab) and Kleric (opens in new tab) if you’re more of a visual learner.)

As you can see in the above tweets, speedrunners are having a blast with the new exploit, which makes sense – it’s fun getting to fly around when you’re not supposed to. Obviously though, this is a much bigger deal to speedrunners, who are now able to bypass pretty much any obstacle in the game – not to mention the laws of gravity – to get to Ganon and initiate the final battle.

Here are some games like Breath of the Wild to play if you feel like you’re running out of stuff to do in Hyrule.

A new video has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild began life as a prototype based on a map of the Japanese city of Kyoto.

In a video published earlier this week from DidYouKnowGaming?, several intriguing facts about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are revealed. At the very beginning of the video, it’s revealed that one of the very first decisions made by Hidemaro Fujibayashi, game director of Breath of the Wild, was to build a prototype of the game’s map of Hyrule on the scale of Kyoto, the Japanese city in which Nintendo’s headquarters are located.

The video outlines that this was done to convey how huge the developers intended the map of Hyrule to be. The development team then thought about all the smaller details in Kyoto, like how often you’d run into post boxes, and considered this a template for how often you should encounter landmarks in Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule.

It’s a fascinating detail in a fascinating video. If you’re looking to uncover some little-known facts about Nintendo’s astounding game, we’d absolutely recommend giving the full video a watch, where you can uncover amazing details like the castle at the centre of the Kyoto prototype that Fujibayashi insisted they include, and many more details.

This is certainly one excellent way to celebrate The Legend of Zelda’s 35th anniversary, which occurs this year in 2021. Recently, Nintendo revealed Skyward Sword HD, a remaster of the 2011 Wii game for the Switch, which is due to release later this year in July. Outside of that, rumors have persisted of a Twilight Princess/Wind Waker HD double pack release for later this year on the Switch, but Nintendo has yet to announce anything else Zelda-related outside of the Skyward Sword remaster.

For a complete list of all the games confirmed to be coming to the Switch at some point in the future, head over to our upcoming Switch games guide for more.

A Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild fan has pointed out a detail in the game which paints NPC Beedle as even weirder than players first realised.

As part of a thread, where Twitter user @TristianACooper (opens in new tab) – in celebration of Breath of the Wild’s fouth anniversary – shares fun things they’ve noticed during their playthrough of the game, Tristan translated the notebook that Beedle is always scribbling in and revealed that the character has actually been writing nonsense the whole time.

Remember how Beedle is always thinking carefully about what he’s writing while he’s resting at stables? If you translate his notes, you can see… they’re complete nonsense (but also on-brand for Beedle). pic.twitter.com/6qKvqK6bxeMarch 3, 2021

The character, who has been a series regular since Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, (which if rumours are to be believed may be getting a remaster soon) can be found near Hyrule stables to trade items with in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. What players might not know is that Beedle has a very complex mind that requires him to note down anything that pops into his head, for example: “writing, very important, document, remember, amazing, memo memo.”

This same thread also highlights other easily-missed details in the game such as Selmie does not appreciate it when Link tries to torch her surfing shields (opens in new tab). Speaking of torches, if Link starts feeling malicious he can actually set the dragonflies and butterflies alight (opens in new tab). Not that we think anyone should!

Tristan also linked to an older thread of theirs which contains even more Breath of the Wild trivia, including our personal favourite: Link’s shirtless idle animation (opens in new tab)

For fans of Nintendo’s 2017 title, there’s good news. Development on Breath of the Wild 2 was recently reported as “proceeding smoothly,” and fans can even expect more news on the project to be revealed this year. However, according to a leak from a retailer, the sequel could be released as soon as Q2 of this year. Until we get an official release date from Nintendo though, we’ll just have to keep reliving Link’s adventures in Hyrule.

People are getting more and more creative when it comes to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and this new speedrun is toe-tally no exception.

One Zelda fan has completed the game in just over eight hours using their feet to hold the controller. Joedun (opens in new tab), who streamed their run on Twitch (opens in new tab), said that it was at least “ten times worse” than the 100% no-hit run which they also completed not too long ago.

This feat might make Joedun the first person in the world to officially clear the game’s major dungeons and defeat Ganon using only his feet to do so.

I was the FIRST PERSON in the WORLD to do ALL DUNGEONS in #BreathoftheWild with my FEET AND A PRO CONTROLLER, this was 10x worse then 100% damagless btw pic.twitter.com/WAx3sPuSleFebruary 16, 2021

Speaking to Polygon (opens in new tab), Joedun said: “When 100% was a test of skill and endurance, the feet run was a giant test of patience”. “I would take the test of skill any day honestly. Not to say you don’t need skill to beat [BOTW] with your feet, but damn did it make me a little bit upset at times.”

The playthrough, which you can view over on Twitch, is 8 hours and 18 minutes in its entirety. Joedun said that this was a first for him, stating he’s never played a game using his soles and toes before.

As you might expect, there are plenty of ways to make a speedrun of Breath of the Wild pretty simple, but they almost definitely require the use of your hands and probably wouldn’t be able to be pulled off using just your feet; making the run all the more impressive.

With that in mind, Joedun said that he managed to get some of the classic tricks working, like pulling off the whistle-sprint exploit to let you run faster and shield clipping into areas. How they managed to do that with their feet is a weird thought to wrap your head around.

An Irish historical novel has an unexpected The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (opens in new tab) Easter egg, and the accident behind its inclusion is entirely too relatable.

A Traveller at the Gates of Wisdom is a historical tale set across many generations of history (it also isn’t officially coming out until August 11 (opens in new tab), but there are apparently a good number of pre-release copies out there). Dana Schwartz, who is also a writer, noticed a Reddit thread about the book (opens in new tab) that calls out some strange inclusions in a list of ingredients for dressmaking dyes.

OKAY. This is a thread, but it’s worth it I promise. On Reddit today, user u/NoNoNo_OhOhOh posted a page from acclaimed Irish novelist John Boyne’s latest book, ‘The Traveller At the Gates of Wisdom.Note the ingredients. pic.twitter.com/4RTgZxtUT7August 3, 2020

Every single one of the 11 ingredients listed is an item from Breath of the Wild. You could argue that nightshade and sapphire both exist in our world as well, but there’s no doubt about where Octorok eyeballs, red lizalfos tail, and least of all Hylian shrooms come from. Why in Nayru’s name does this straight-faced historical novel suddenly take a Ready Player One (opens in new tab) turn in this paragraph about preparing a poison for Attila the Hun?

Schwartz had a hunch, so she Googled “ingredients red dye clothes” (opens in new tab), as anybody doing a quick bit of historical research might. There in the info box that Google shares before it even gets to the standard results was a list of the fantastical items, pulled straight from a guide to Breath of the Wild. But could such a silly oversight really be the explanation? As author John Boyne himself confirmed, the answer is an embarrassed “yup”.

LOL that is actually kinda hilarious. I’m totally willing to own it. 😂🤣Something tells me I’ll be telling this anecdote on stage for many years to come… 😂August 3, 2020

The author says he has no plans (opens in new tab) to edit the list out of future editions of his book, so this strange little nod to Hylian dye making will remain in perpetuity. Now we’ve just got to work out where A Traveller at the Gates of Wisdom falls on the Zelda timeline…

I wonder if Nintendo will reference this reference in the Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel (opens in new tab).
