]]>Taking to Vero (opens in new tab), Snyder posted a set photo from his version of Justice League. Presumably, this is part of the small amount of additional photography that took place in late 2020 – one that included Jared Leto. In it, you can see – what else? – a joker card and a tantalizingly out-of-focus shot of the Batman villain.

Snyder even paid tribute to Suicide Squad director David Ayer, the man who brought this iteration of the character to life back in 2016: “Amazing character you created. Honored to have our worlds collide,” the director said.
But it’s the oh-so-small tease of Joker’s new look that will grab the most attention. Without jumping to conclusions too much (as we’re likely going to have to wait until March to see the finished product), it’s worlds apart from Leto’s Suicide Squad design.
The hair looks longer, almost Ledger-esque, and the eyes are a little more sunken. Snyder previously promised the Joker would adopt a more “road weary” look in his Justice League and that certainly bears out when looking at the rougher, rounder Joker compared to his short stint in Suicide Squad. The divisive tattoos are also not visible.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League, meanwhile, now has an official release date. The four-hour cut is going to land on HBO Max on March 18 and will include over 80% new, unseen footage and even a fresh Superman-themed opening.

Exactly who Deathstroke is conversing with in that storyboard isn’t made clear – although smart money says it’s Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor – and while it would be fun to see Slade Wilson confront the Justice League it’s more likely that his appearance will sow the seeds for Affleck’s solo Batman movie. In any case, it’ll be good to get an early look at Manganiello’s character in action.

]]>“People of my generation remember Commissioner Gordon as this jolly, ineffectual Santa Claus type, and I think over the years in the comics there’s definitely much more of a badass side to him,” Simmons explained to Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab). “One of the things that’s interesting to me is investigating hopefully a little bit more of that badass [side]…You’re living in a universe where it’s pretty tough to be a badass compared to somebody like Batman, but in the universe of non-superheroes I like the idea of Commissioner Gordon as a guy that can take care of himself, a guy that’s a real partner to Batman, not just a guy that turns on the bat signal and goes, ‘Help! Help, Batman!’”
Simmons’ casting – and this insane workout pic (opens in new tab) – was a pretty big indicator that the DCEU version of Gordon will be a little more intense than we’re used to, and it’s great to hear the actor more or less confirm that here. As illustrated by films like Whiplash, Simmons is no stranger to playing tough guys, and I’m excited to see how his Gordon develops over multiple movies. In the meantime, if you want a hint at what a more hardened Gordon might look like you could do worse than the animated version of Batman: Year One, which features an excellent vocal performance from Bryan Cranston.

Who needs Batfleck when you have Simmons’ Gordon? With a physique like that the actor should be getting fitted for spandex rather than the Commissioner’s signature overcoat…On a more serious note, this could point towards a Gordon who sees a little more action in the field, and that is no bad thing.

]]>Birth.Movies.Death. also report that Snyder is filming the underwater scenes in Justice League much differently to how he did for Batman v Superman (opens in new tab). While the latter film had Aquaman actor Jason Momoa hold his breath in a water tank in his underwhelming cameo, Snyder has chosen to film Momoa on a “green screen stage” for Justice League. In fact, the report notes that “a majority of the movie will be shot on sets and Snyder will utilize background replacement”.
I have little doubt that Justice League will be visually impressive – that’s always been Snyder’s forte – but after Batman v Superman I’m much less confident on whether or not the big team-up movie will have a compelling narrative. In any case I’m sure Snyder will put the fancy rigging to good use, and having an actor of Dafoe’s calibre on your set almost always makes the final film a little bit better.

Though he’s mostly stuck to intimate indie films so far, Ezra Miller will soon be breaking into comic-book movies as speedy superhero The Flash, and he spoke to MTV this week about how he landed the role.
Best known for his roles in We Need To Talk About Kevin and Perks Of Being A Wallflower, the 22-year-old actor talked to MTV (opens in new tab) about receiving a phone call from Zack Snyder after landing the role.
“I pick it up and [my agent’s] like, ‘Listen I have Zack Snyder on the phone, I gotta put you through he wants to talk to you about this DC Universe thing,’ and I was like, ‘What?!’” Ezra laughs.
“And then he got on the phone and you know Zack, he’s just gung-ho, he’s in it, he’s completely involved so he just starts talking about how I’m going to play The Flash. And I was just in sort of a state of shock and disbelief.”
Though Miller isn’t expected to appear as The Flash in next year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, he should turn up in the two-part Justice League movie in 2017, plus his own solo outing as The Flash in 2018.
The latter is yet to find a director or writer, though it seems likely that Snyder will oversee the film in some capacity.
The movie version of The Flash isn’t expected to have anything to do with the same-named TV series, which is currently airing on The CW in the US.

Just yesterday we heard from Mark Millar about his misgivings regarding a Justice League movie, and today we’re hearing rumours that the project has hit yet another roadblock.
Various sources for Badass Digest (opens in new tab) claim that Warner Bros has thrown out Will Beall’s script altogether, a serious setback for a project that currently has no director nor confirmed cast members.
Last we heard, Beall’s script was positioning the villainous Darkseid as the story’s primary antagonist alongside an unnamed “cosmic threat”. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern were set to be the primary heroes.
However, it seems that Warner isn’t happy with the direction the script has taken, so don’t be surprised if that lineup is subject to change should a new writer be brought on board.
At present the film is still lined up for a 2015 release, but with nothing concrete in place so far, we’d be surprised if the film made it out of the blocks any time soon…
