As diehard fans will know, Resident Evil’s timeline is pretty complicated. Mainline games exist alongside CGI films in canon, while there are several spin-offs to take into account across the years. The Netflix series confuses things further by jumping even further forward in time, being in dialogue with past events, and building on pre-existing canon.

To help make sense of it all, we’ve provided an overview of the Resident Evil timeline’s main events – including where exactly the new Netflix series fits in.

When does the Resident Evil Netflix series take place?

Resident Evil Netflix series

The Resident Evil Netflix series takes place both in 2022 and 2036. That makes them the latest events chronologically on the Resident Evil timeline.

In 2022, Umbrella is still alive and kicking, with Albert Wesker (who has seemingly returned from the dead) living with his daughters Billie and Jade in New Raccoon City.

14 years later and an adult Jade is surviving in a post-outbreak world. Flesh-eating zombies have overrun much of the population, with various corporations carving out their own regions and city states. It is also heavily implied that the outbreak started in 2022.

These events, as is revealed in the show, all take place decades after the Raccoon City Incident in 1998. There, a zombie outbreak was covered up by Umbrella and the US Government, with the city eventually being nuked to hide the truth of what really happened. If you’re new to the series and keen to see how that played out, be sure to play the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 Remakes.

Showrunner Andrew Dabb has already told us “everything that happened in the games exists in this world,” so here’s how the rest of the series fits alongside the Resident Evil Netflix show.

  • Resident Evil Zero (July 1998)
  • Resident Evil (July 1998)
  • Resident Evil 2 (September 1998)
  • Resident Evil 3 (September 1998)
  • Resident Evil: Code Veronica (December 1998)
  • Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness [Penamstan Civil War flashbacks] (2000)
  • Resident Evil 4 (2004)
  • Resident Evil: Revelations (2004-2005)
  • Resident Evil: Degeneration (2005)
  • Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2006)
  • Resident Evil 5 (2009)
  • Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (2011)
  • Resident Evil: Damnation (2011)
  • Resident Evil 6 (2012-2013)
  • Resident Evil: Vendetta (2014)
  • Resident Evil 7 (2017)
  • Resident Evil: Village (2021)
  • Resident Evil Netflix series (New Raccoon City scenes, 2022)
  • Resident Evil Netflix series (2036)

For the TL;DR crowd: the Resident Evil Netflix series takes place both 24 years and 38 years after the first three games. Wesker arriving in New Raccoon City in 2022 comes 13 years after his supposed death in Resident Evil 5.

If applying ‘games are canon’ as a blanket theory across the entire series, Resident Evil: Village is the closest in date to the Netflix series, technically taking place a year before the events of the new show. What that means for Umbrella’s resurgence both as Blue Umbrella in the latter games and as an evil corporation in the Netflix series is unclear, and there are likely to be some discrepancies if you map out every game in relation to the Netflix series.

To keep things as straightforward as possible, we can be sure that the genesis of the story began in 1998 with the first three games; the Resident Evil Netflix series builds upon it decades later. Phew. We made it.

Black Mirror season 6 is in the works – and with an all-new star-studded cast. Netflix’s dystopian anthology series, created by Charlie Brooker, has added Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, Zazie Beetz, Danny Ramirez, Josh Harnett, Paapa Essiedu, Clara Rugaard, Anjana Vasa, and Auden Thornton to the cast. According to Variety (opens in new tab), this particular casting spans three episodes, and a whole other slew of actors will soon be added to the roster.

Season 5 premiered back in 2019, and consists of only three episodes, with notable cast members including Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Miley Cyrus, and Andrew Scott. The new episodes will be “even more cinematic in scope” with each installment essentially being treated as an individual film.

Paul, best known for his starring role in Breaking Bad, currently plays Caleb on HBO’s Westworld and recently starred alongside Karen Gillan and Jesse Eisenberg in Riley Stearns’ satirical sci-fi thriller Dual. Beetz plays Van on FX’s Atlanta and can be seen next in David Leitch’s upcoming action flick Bullet Train. Ramirez appeared in blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick and will next star in Netflix’s Look Both Ways alongside Luke Wilson and Riverdale star Lili Reinhart.

Essiedu stars as George in Sky TV’s action drama time loop series The Lazarus Project, Thorton plays Lucy Damon in NBC’s This Is Us, and Vasan can be seen on Channel 4 and Peacock’s “We Are Lady Parts.” Former teen heartthrob Josh Harnett is set to play Nobel Prize-winning nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

The first trailer for Orphan: First Kill is here – and, unsurprisingly, it sees Isabelle Fuhrman’s fresh-faced villain terrorising another wealthy American family.

Set years before the events of the 2009 hit, the sequel-turned-prequel centers on Leena Klammer, who went by Esther in the first flick – a woman suffering from a hormone disorder that stunts her growth – as she travels to the US after orchestrating an elaborate escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility. There, she impersonates the missing daughter of Tricia (Julia Stiles) and Allen Albright (Rossif Sutherland), Esther, and quickly moves into their home, but Tricia soon becomes convinced that Esther isn’t who she claims to be.

Judging from the synopsis and the teaser, which you can watch above, what follows is pretty standard horror movie stuff: Allen, the husband, doesn’t believe his wife’s concerns, while Leena/Esther splits her time between painting eerie pictures and trying her best to separate them (or worse). If its predecessor is anything to go by, though, it’s sure to have a few surprises in store.

What’s perhaps most impressive about the clip, however, is how they’ve managed to de-age Fuhrman. The 25-year-old actor was just 12 when she made the twisty original, and word on the street is that no visual effects were used to make her look younger. Esther isn’t actually as young as she presents herself to be, either, so it’s kind of wild to think about how Fuhrman was once a pre-teen, playing a 33-year-old disguised as a nine-year-old, and now she’s in her mid-20s, playing an even younger version of that same character.

Julia Stiles as Tricia in Orphan: First Kill

“I love the challenge of being able to play a kid because that’s never historically been done in cinema — I was like looking all this up, because I love looking up old movie history and things like that, and I was like, ‘Oh, an adult has never reprised the role that they played as a child,'” she told The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) last year. “Will Smith, for example, recently did that movie [Gemini Man] where they de-age somebody, but to reprise a role that you literally did as a kid as an adult has never been done before. It’s kind of impossible. And we did it.

“We didn’t use special effects, we didn’t use any crazy makeup tricks. And I think that’s what makes the movie work, is because you really can’t figure out how I look like a [9-year-old], but I do. It’s really creepy.”

Written by Scream’s David Coggeshall and directed by The Boy’s William Brent Bell, Orphan: First Kill is set to release in select theaters, on Digital, and on Paramount+ on August 19. In the UK, it will be coming out exclusively in cinemas.

The next installment of The Walking Dead series has launched in the form of a new massively interactive live event available through Facebook Gaming.

The Walking Dead: Last Mile kicked off on July 11, 2022, and is available to take part in for free. All you need is a Facebook account. The next chapter in The Walking Dead series sees players tune into a daily, choice-based narrative experience which is set to take place over the course of the next four months.

Being developed in collaboration with Genvid Entertainment, Skybound Entertainment, and of course Meta, the idea of the project is that it isn’t quite a game, isn’t quite a TV show, it’s somewhere in between. Players can create avatars to join the universe and make decisions about the adventure unfolding in front of them. The story will also be explored through a series of live streams which are being hosted by actors Yvette Nicole Brown and Felicia Day.

One of the appeals of The Walking Dead: Last Mile (opens in new tab) is that it actually does exist within the wider The Walking Dead universe. So whatever the story’s outcome turns out to be in a few months’ time, it will technically line up with the story from the original The Walking Dead comics. It’s also pretty simple to get involved, all you need is access to either the desktop site or the Facebook app on mobile to join in.

There’s been a tonne of other The Walking Dead games over the years from mobile games, FPS games, choice-based games, and more. Aside from The Walking Dead: Last Mile though, we’ve also got another The Walking Dead game to look forward to as The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners gets a sequel for PSVR 2 later this year.

If you’re looking for something else to play, take a look at our best zombie games list.

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things 4, Volume 2*

Netflix has unveiled a new billboard dedicated to a dead Stranger Things character, who was killed in the fantasy horror show’s fourth season. The Duffer brothers – and Noah Schnapp – warned us there would be casualties in the two-part finale to season 4, but viewers were still left shocked and devastated when fan-favorite Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) bled out after being bitten by a bunch of Demobats in episode 9. The Dungeons & Dragons-loving metalhead had been tasked with distracting the winged beasts alongside Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), so that Robin, Steve, and Nancy could attack villain Vecna‘s body in the Upside Down.

At first, their plan to put on the loudest, “most metal” rock concert worked, and drew the creatures towards the alternate version of Eddie’s real-world trailer. But when the bats started coming through the vents, the duo bailed – or at least Dustin did. Plagued by his guilt for running away when cheerleader Chrissy, Vecna’s first victim of the season, was murdered, he vows not to flee this time and instead, bursts out of the trailer and bikes down the road to buy the others some more time. Sadly, for Eddie, the swarm catches up with him and by the time Dustin re-enters the dark dimension and kneels by his side, he’s already fading.

“I didn’t run this time, right?” the Hellfire Club leader asks Dustin as he lay dying. “I think it’s my year, Henderson. I think it’s finally my year. I love you man.” A hero’s outing if ever we saw one, and Netflix has honored his brave actions by erecting a display panel that says, “Eddie freaking Munson.”

Yesterday (July 6), the streamer tweeted out a photo of the billboard alongside the words, “The Man, The Myth, The Legend.” And the platform isn’t the only one paying tribute to the character. If you’re still hung up on what happened, then check out our heartfelt reaction to Stranger Things’ Eddie death, or if you want to torture yourself, then read up on all of the Stranger Things season 4, Volume 2 deaths.

Stranger Things is a love letter to pop culture, written and created by pop culture lovers Matt and Ross Duffer. The series frequently borrows from and is inspired by classic films – and Stranger Things season 4 is no different. The season pays homage to horror icons like Doug Bradley’s Pinhead and Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter, and even takes some inspiration from haunted house horrors like The Amityville Horror and The Changeling.

If you’ve finished Volume 1 and 2 and are looking for something to fill the Hawkins-shaped void in your heart, we’ve compiled a watchlist full of creepy goodness to keep you busy. Some of the films on this list have a pretty direct influence on Stranger Things season 4, and others are simply scary flicks that we think are a must-watch after finishing this season. Scroll on down to see our spooky selection – and be warned, there are spoilers for Stranger Things ahead as we discuss how these movies influenced the Netflix series.

Carrie (1976)

Sissy Spacey as Carrie

There’s a riff on Brian De Palma’s Carrie in episode 2, one that was acknowledged by author Stephen King himself. (opens in new tab) Much like Eleven, Carrie (Sissy Spacek) is a shy teenage girl with psychic and telekinetic abilities who doesn’t quite fit in with everyone else. Eleven’s high school bullies are cruel and inhumane, not unlike Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen) and co.

The roller rink scene combines two scenes from Carrie: one where Chris and the girls corner Carrie in the girls’ locker room and pelt her with tampons and pads while she cowers on the floor, and the infamous prom scene in which Carrie is doused in pig blood on stage – another move orchestrated by Chris. Carrie retaliates by using her telekinetic powers to set the auditorium on fire and send her bullies to their deaths. When Angela and co. throw a milkshake at Eleven and push her to the floor, El – who doesn’t have her special powers – bashes Angela in the head with a roller skate.

The Gate (1987)

The Gate

The Gate, directed by Tibor Takacs, follows a twelve-year-old named Glen (Stephen Dorff) who lives in a house that, at first, appears to be haunted… but it’s actually a gateway to a demonic other-realm. Sound familiar?

Glen and his best friend Terry (Louis Tripp) accidentally open the gate, and everyone who inhabits the house becomes plagued with horrifying supernatural happenings that result in death, destruction, and demons disguised as their own parents. If you liked the Creel House’s connection to the Upside Down, you might like The Gate’s direct connection to hell.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

Robert Englund as Freddy Kreuger

Of course Freddy Kreuger is on this list: he’s played by Robert Englund, who plays Vecna-plagued, falsely accused serial killer Victor Creel. But that’s not the only connection.

Vecna preys on teenagers who are actively hurting or wracked with guilt after surviving a traumatic event and forces them to undergo some kind of twisted reenactment prior to taking their lives – not unlike our man Freddy. Both villains have twisted, fleshy faces and are seemingly immortal – but Freddy gets you the second you fall asleep.

While every installment of West Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street franchise more or less follows the same premise (i.e. Freddy Kreuger hunting teenagers in their dreams), Dream Warriors (directed by Chuck Russell) focuses a whole lot more on the trauma that plagues each victim – and even takes place in the psychiatric hospital where they’re trying to heal. We also learn a bit more about Freddy’s origin story which, spoiler alert, isn’t as cool as Vecna’s.

The Ring (2002) / Ringu (1998)

The Ring

Whether you know The Ring by its ominous ‘You’re gonna die in seven days’ phone calls or as the ‘movie with the creepy girl who comes out of the TV’ – it’s definitely worth a watch.

After viewing a ‘cursed’ videotape, each victim is killed approximately seven days later by an unseen force. Each body is left with what some viewers have dubbed as the ‘death face,’ in which the victim’s jaw is broken and their face is violently contorted – not unlike what Vecna does to the kids.

While Gore Verbinski’s 2002 remake might be more popular with Western viewers, the original Japanese film by Hideo Nakata is a little more complex and delves into the concept of murder via psychic abilities and ESP – and the little girl at the center of it all. We definitely recommend a double feature.

Firestarter (1984)

Firestarter (1984)

A little girl with special powers being hunted down by the government…sound familiar? While we can’t necessarily verify that the Duffer brothers took inspiration from Charlie McGee (Drew Barrymore) in order to craft Eleven’s storyline, we don’t think it’s entirely out of the realm of possibility. Especially considering that one of the promotional posters for season one (opens in new tab) was a clear riff on the film’s poster, putting Eleven in a similar pose with her hair blowing in the wind. While Eleven’s powers are more telekinetic, Charlie has pyrokinesis: the ability to control heat and fire.

A secret government agency known as the Department of Scientific Intelligence or “The Shop” (which did actually exist in the United States for some time) takes Charlie from her family and experiments on her with the goal to weaponize her powers. She and her father Andy (David Keith) live life on the run, but are eventually captured by a member of The Shop who wants Charlie killed. Sounds a little bit like season four… or maybe a lot a bit.

Alien 3 (1992)

Alien 3

When Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) crash-lands onto an all-male maximum-security prison planet, she accidentally unleashes a facehugger who promptly gives birth to a terrifying alien – who ends up hunting down the prisoners one by one.

David Harbour even confirmed (opens in new tab) the David Fincher film’s influence on season 4, which makes perfect sense given that Hopper is being held at a maximum-security prison that happens to be housing a live Demogorgon. Much like Ripley, it’s Hopper who ends up leading the charge against the creature while the other inmates back away – or get instantly slaughtered.

The Amityville Horror (1979)

Irene Dailey in The Amityville Horror

In 1975, George (James Brolin) and Kathy Lutz (Margot Kidder) buy a new home in Amityville, New York, and are excited to start a brand new chapter… until they become plagued with violent supernatural occurrences. Much like the Creel House is another entrance to the Upside Down, the Amityville house is referred to as a “passage to hell.” It starts off with missing items and unexplainable locked doors and quickly escalates to blood oozing down the walls to a pig with glowing red eyes – who is their young daughter Amy’s (Natasha Ryan) ‘imaginary’ friend.

Even scarier, the film is based on the real-life story of the Lutz family, who bought the house at a ‘bargain price’ just one year after Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family upstairs.

Don’t Look Under the Bed (1999)

Don't Look Under the Bed (1999)

This one might seem like the true outlier on the list, but stick with us. Don’t Look Under the Bed is a made-for-TV fantasy horror flick that premiered on the Disney Channel in 1999 under the Disney Channel Original Movie banner. When strange things start happening in the small down of Middleberg – such as dogs appearing on peoples’ roofs and packets of gelatin being poured into the school swimming pool, all signs seem to point to high school freshman Frances McCausland (Erin Chambers), though she’s really not sure why. When an imaginary friend named Larry (Eric “T” Hodges II) shows up, evident by the fact that only children can see him, he informs Frances that she’s being framed by the Boogeyman.

Larry and Frances end up journeying into a dream-like version of the Upside Down, which exists under Frances’ bed. And, uh, the Boogeyman is terrifying. If his jagged teeth and abnormally long and pointed fingers weren’t enough, he has a fish scale-like extra skin that suddenly puffs up – like that of a Demogorgon – when he’s trying to terrify Frances. This one might give you nightmares, but it’s definitely worth the watch.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs stars Jodie Foster as an FBI agent named Clarice Starling who, while hunting down gruesome murderer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) seeks out the advice of former psychiatrist turned cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins).

Though Victor Kreel isn’t a killer like Dr. Hannibal Lecter, there are definitely some parallels: namely between Robin and Nancy’s visit with Kreel and Clarice Starling’s visit with Lecter. Even though Lecter and Victor are sentenced to spend a life behind bars, their life experience is needed in order to capture a serial killer and solve a murder mystery. Both Lecter and Victor are held in institutions for the criminally insane, and are kept under tight watch in a cell at the end of a dark corridor. Nancy and Robin are taunted by the other inmates as they head toward Victor’s cell, which is undoubtedly an homage to Jonathan Demme’s Academy Award-winning psychological thriller.

Hellraiser (1987)

Hellraiser

Ross Duffer said it himself (opens in new tab): “Pinhead really freaked us out when we were younger. We really want to imbue Vecna with some Pinhead vibes.” And imbue they did.

Hellraiser, directed by Clive Barker and based on Barker’s book The Hellbound Heart, follows a morally corrupt man who buys a mystical puzzle box and ends up opening a direct portal into a sadomasochistic type of hell. Much like Vecna, Pinhead (Doug Bradley) – named for, you guessed it, the extremely sharp needles that protrude from his face and head – was once human, too. The Cenobites were born as earthly beings, but later transformed into grotesque demonic creatures due to their blind devotion to sadomasochism – and Pinhead, being the most depraved of them all, is their leader.

And it isn’t just their creepy low-octave voices that make them similar: Both Vecna and Pinhead speak to their victims in eerily calm, collected tones before causing their victims pain. That’s part of what makes them so terrifying: they aren’t in a rush. They don’t mind explaining. Plus, they show up when summoned.

The Changeling (1980)

The Changeling

It’s another horror flick about a haunted house, yes, but it isn’t just the stained glass windows and square Victorian turrets that made us think the Duffer brothers might’ve given The Changeling a rewatch before writing season 4.

When widowed composer John Russell (George C. Scott) decides to buy a historic mansion from an agent named Claire Norman (Trish Van Devere), the paranormal happenings start. However, unlike some of the other films we’ve listed, it isn’t demons this time. Instead, it’s the ghost of a sickly six-year-old boy who was drowned in the house by his father.

When Victor Creel recounts his encounter with Vecna via flashback in episode 4, he enters the attic and finds a rather ominous, rusted wheelchair. We also learn in episode 7 that it was Vecna’s favorite place in the house as a boy – the room where he set up candles and focused on channeling his psychic abilities in order to torture his family. In The Changeling, John quickly realizes that the paranormal presence is coming from the attic. It’s here that Claire discovers the sickly boy’s cobweb-covered antique wheelchair – triggering a terrifying chain of events.

Summer of ’84 (2018)

Summer of '84

When the trailer for Summer of ’84 first debuted, the Stranger Things comparisons were almost immediate. It’s set in the 80s, follows a group of teenage boys who set out to uncover the mystery of multiple missing teenage boys, and yes they ride through their neighborhood on bikes.

While the film, directed by Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, might’ve been inspired by the recent boom in pop culture nostalgia brought about by the popularity of Stranger Things, it’s a realistic, true-crime kind of horror that borrows more from Stand By Me. There isn’t a Demogorgon at the center of these terrifying happenings – everything is painfully human.

The Black Phone (2022)

Ethan Hawke as The Grabber in The Black Phone

Late 70s nostalgia, bullies, psychic abilities, supernatural happenings, missing kids, and a terrifying villain who watches while you sleep? Yeah, this flick has something for everyone. Based on the novel by Joe Hill, The Black Phone follows Finney (Mason Thames), a teenager who gets abducted by a sadistic child murderer (Ethan Hawke) and uses a disconnected phone in his cell to communicate with his captor’s previous victims. The film was directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson, helmer of Sinister, another Ethan Hawke-led horror that is frequently considered to be one of the scariest movies of all time.

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have a hard time letting go of their characters. Not only have they admitted it themselves, but lead actor Millie Bobby Brown has called them out for only killing off a handful since the Netflix show began in 2016.

Stranger Things season 4, Volume 2 saw a couple of villains and a hero meet their demise, however, and now the duo has confirmed that one character in particular is “definitively” dead: Matthew Modine’s villainous Dr. Martin Brenner.

“For real this time. He’s toast,” the pair joked while appearing on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast (opens in new tab), referencing how Brenner was believed to have wiped out by a Demogorgon way back in season 1, only to resurface in the most recent installment. (Modine did show up in season 2, but the scenes in question were flashbacks).

The scientist, who used to carry out tests on Eleven and the other superpowered children at Hawkins National Lab, was fatally shot by Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan’s troops in the eighth episode of season 4, titled ‘Papa’, as he tried to carry a sedated Eleven away from the compromised NINA Project compound. While he was the one that drugged her before placing a shock collar around her neck, he tells Eleven as he bleeds out that he’s always seen her as is family. A master manipulator with murky morals until the very end, eh, Martin?

Elsewhere in the new interview, the Duffers stated that everyone’s favorite D&D-loving metalhead Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) is “sadly” gone, too – having been attacked be a bunch of Demobats. But that’s fortunately not the case for Sadie Sink’s Max Mayfield, who just about escaped with her life after using herself as bait for big bad Vecna in episode 9.

“She’s brain dead, but yeah, she’s alive. She’s blind and all of her bones are broken, but yeah, she’s doing great, Josh,” they teased. “She’s seen better days.”

We’re just about halfway through the year 2022 which means we’re also just about halfway through the ‘The Year of Valiant,’ the editorial-marketing initiative by comic book publisher Valiant Entertainment.

As part of the drive, one of its core characters Bloodshot will return in September in the form of Bloodshot Unleashed, Valiant’s first mature readers series.

Bloodshot Unleashed is written by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Jon Davis-Hunt. In the new series the nanite-powered supersoldier journeys across the United States to stop “twisted and lethal” living weapons that break out of a top-secret facility from unleashing “bloodshed and devastation on the neglected small towns and forgotten corners of the country,” battling his own demons along the way.

The debut issue will feature eight covers, including covers by artists on Davis-Hunt, Nicole Rifkin, Pete Woods, and Gerardo Zaffino. Here’s a look at those illustrated covers:

Bloodshot Unleashed #1 will also feature four variant covers that pay homage to past Bloodshot covers featuring the new FigZero S 1/12 Bloodshot action figure with designer-manufacturer threezero. Newsarama readers get a first look at those covers below.

In case you don’t know what “FigZero S 1/12” means, the action figure (which is available for preorder (opens in new tab)) stands at 6″ (~15.2cm) tall with – according to Valiant – “a highly-detailed sculpt and fully-articulated body with 39 points of articulation. Accessories include fabric black t-shirt and harness, one katana with scabbard, one semi-Automatic rifle, one submachine gun, one pistol, and four pairs of interchangeable hands.”

The Callisto Protocol will be a much gorier game than Dead Space thanks to improved enemy dismemberment.

That’s according to director and Striking Distance founder Glen Schofield, who previously oversaw the Dead Space series at EA. Speaking with Eurogamer (opens in new tab), Schofield affirmed that the gore system in The Callisto Protocol is “so advanced compared to Dead Space” and allows for “some pretty horrific moments.”

“It’s a lot of rendering, and you break up the characters into jumps, cut them up with bones sticking out and all that,” he said. “Then the rendering guys, they do their special thing to it which is make everything look wet. And so every character had to be done that way – and however you go at it, chunks break off, or parts of the face, parts of the head.”

We also discussed the game’s gore system with Schofield back at Summer Game Fest’s Play Days event. He noted that dismemberment has become much more common in action games since Dead Space was released, so the team made a point to improve on it with a more reactive gore system.

“It’s got variety, you can cut off the head, take off the legs,” Schofield told GamesRadar (as part of a longer The Callisto Protocol interview). “We’ve got a gore system, and it’s just chunks. You can take pieces off the character all over.”

The uncensored debut trailer for The Callisto Protocol shows an inmate melt from the inside out after a revolting tentacle monster half-devours him, so there was never any doubt that it wasn’t pulling punches on the gore factor. After Schofield’s comments, we’re even more eager to see how The Callisto Protocol outdoes the infamous needle death scene in Dead Space 2.

We also spoke to Schofield about why The Callisto Protocol is no longer in the PUBG universe.

The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson has revealed a major detail about the film’s finale was changed at the last minute. The film stars Ethan Hawke as the sinister, child-abducting Grabber – and follows his latest victim, Finney (Mason Thames) as he attempts to escape the man’s clutches. Spoilers for The Black Phone ahead!

Still here? Then you’ve seen the horror movie, and you’ll know that, towards the end, Finney sees the ghost of Robin (Miguel Cazarez Mora), who is one of the Grabber’s previous victims. Robin then helps Finney escape from the basement.

“In the script, Robin wasn’t in the room. It was just a phone call,” Derrickson told The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab). “A day or two before we shot that … it suddenly hit me out of nowhere. I was like, ‘Oh, the audience wants to see that kid again. We got to see him again. It’s not going feel right if we don’t see him again.’ I was like, ‘Where’s that kid?’ and they were like, ‘We just flew him home.’ I was like, ‘Get him back. You got to fly him back.'”

The director also elaborated on how the scene came together, revealing he came up with ideas on the spot about how to stage the scene while alone on set. “I end up doing it all in one shot,” he explained. “I think a good director always has an antenna up trying to hear what this movie really wants to be. If you do that, you can sometimes make decisions that are bigger than you.”
