The post The 20 best PS4 exclusives appeared first on Game News.
]]>Editor’s note – We’ve not added Horizon Forbidden West to this list (which launched February 18 on PS5 and PS5) because we believe it’s best experienced on the newest hardware.
Despite the fact that some of these have now made their way to PC , these are still PS5 exclusives when it comes to consoles. Most are available to play on the PS5 via PS5 backwards compatibility too, so their legendary status lives on. Plus, a lot of these titles will now be included for free as part of the new PS Plus Premium games libraries at the mid and upper tiers.
Before we get stuck in though, here are the rules we’ve laid down: this list of the best PS4 exclusives deals with console exclusivity, so some of them can be found on PC. Exclusivity has to be permanent and not timed (so we had to remove Nier: Automata when it released on Xbox One). Plus, the games have to be full-price releases, and not DLC or add-on content – though if we’re lucky they’ll show up on the free PS Plus games (opens in new tab) list at some point and there are always the best free PS4 games (opens in new tab) if you’re feeling thrifty.

The best racing game on PS4
Release Date: 2017Developer: PolyphonyGenre: Racing
+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Compatible with racing wheels+Online tournaments and events
If you’re looking for a driving experience on PS4… there’s only one choice. Sure, DriveClub was the previous favorite, but GT Sport (opens in new tab) offers everything that game had a way more. There’s the usual raft of high-end sports cars to choose from, and a bunch of high-performance models from commercial manufacturers, along with many of the world’s best tracks, lovingly recreated in game. But what sets this apart is the online options, offering tournaments, special events, and loads more – you can essentially live the life of the most exciting, well-travelled professional racing driver… er, without the risk of crashing (or the millions of dollars they’d probably earn).

A magical adventure that will capture your imagination
Release Date: 2019Developer: PixelopusGenre: Adventure
+Heartfelt story+Beautifully stylised+Creative and imaginative
Concrete Genie offers an enchanting, creatively unique experience using the DualShock 4’s motion sensor controls to paint. Yep, that’s right, you create beautiful artwork by tilting your controller in different directions. While it sounds like a bit of an unconventional way to compose art, it actually works really well. Pixelopus offers a deeply heartwarming adventure that explores the impact of an environmental disaster on a now abandoned seaside town. You play a young bullied teenager called Ash who discovers a magical paintbrush that has the power to restore the town and bring his artwork to life. The story also touches on the issue of bullying with sensitivity, and it also shows you a different side to the bullies that you might not expect to see.

The other great crime sim on PS4
Release Date: 2018Developer: SegaGenre: Action RPG
+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Fully localised for the US and UK+Massive game, so great value
If you’ve never experienced the PS4 exclusive Yakuza series… what the hell have you been doing with your gaming life? It’s time to rectify that mistake with the latest Yakuza. No, really, the sixth core outing for the series is actually one of the best places to start as it does a great job of telling the story so far, while offering the best action and elements from previous games in one, meaty adventure. It’s essentially an action-RPG set in Japan, where you play as ex-Yakuza boss Kazuma Kiryu, who is now a good guy fighting for his adopted children and the people of his town. There are mini-game distractions galore, loads of wonderful side-stories to experience, and a gripping overall narrative.

The fighting legend finds a home on PS4
Release Date: 2016Developer: CapcomGenre: Fighting
+Massive list of characters+Also available on PC+Compatible with fightsticks
It might’ve launched in relatively rough shape, but after over a year of additional content, new characters, and countless refinements, Street Fighter 5 (opens in new tab) has realized its full potential as a phenomenal fighting game. Its ever-growing roster of unique characters has the perfect fit for any playstyle, and the inventive V-Skill and V-Trigger systems add another layer of excitement and strategic depth to each intense match. Whether you go with an old favorite like Ryu or opt for an oddball newcomer like Necalli, Street Fighter 5 delivers more of the infinite replayability and limitless skill ceiling you’ve come to expect from Capcom’s fan-favorite fighting game series.

A superhero adventure that’s not to be missed
Release Date: 2014Developer: Sucker PunchGenre: Action adventure
+Brilliant superhero action+Great use of the DualShock 4+Top notch graphics, despite it’s PS4 launch date release
-Empty List
Despite the fact it was one of the original PS4 launch games, inFamous: Second Son is a wonderful example of how technical tweaks for the PS4 Pro release can change the quality of a game dramatically. Sucker Punch’s brilliant smoke-fuelled superhero story looks fantastic even four years after release, and its tale of origins, family, and brotherhood is still one of my favourite PS4 games to date. It make Seattle your playground, and nothing feels quite as good as chaining together attacks with your newly found powers to stop the big bad that’s threatening your town, and your family. Utterly brilliant.

The best game story ever told
Release Date: 2014Developer: Naughty DogGenre: Action adventure
+One of the best game storylines of all time+Looks fantastic on Pro+Epic stealth sections
-Empty List
Okay, okay, so technically The Last of Us was one of the best PS3 games (opens in new tab), but it’s tricky to compile a list of the best PS4 exclusives without at least mentioning this fantastic remaster. Not only do you get the original The Last of Us game in glorious 4K if you’re rocking a PS4 Pro, but you also get a load of additional content bundled in as well. Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic tale is still one of the best video game stories (opens in new tab) ever told. So if you’ve not experienced Ellie and Joel’s tale yet, settle back (although not too far, this is a tense game with mutants in it), and immerse yourself in one of the best games of all time.

A papercraft adventure where you’re the star
Release Date: 2015Developer: Media MoleculeGenre: Platformer adventure
+Best use of the DualShock 4’s unique feature+Adorable papercraft world+Puts you right in the game
-Empty List
Tearaway Unfolded is one of those rare games that is a sheer delight from start to finish. Its beautiful paper craft world is one that you’re immersed in from the get go, using the touchpad on the DualShock 4 to draw and craft your own creations that get placed inside the game. And, the more you play, the more the world of Tearaway Unfolded becomes a reflection of your artistic talents. Trust me, you don’t need many, thank the PlayStation Gods, but even a shambled together star adds some pizzazz to this already stunning world. Of course, there’s a story here too – it’s not all scissors and glue work – and it’s up to you to help rid the world of the evil Scraps and restore order once and for all. Meet some adorable creatures along the way, make friends, earn yourself some sticks and poke and prod the world using the power of the DualShock 4, and more in this unique PS4 exclusive adventure.

A wonderful remaster of the PS2 classic
Release Date: 2016Developer: Insomniac GamesGenre: Action adventure
+An animated space odyssey+Brilliantly silly weapons and story+A PS2 classic brought into the present day
-Empty List
If you played Ratchet and Clank back in the days of the PS2, you know how amazing the duo’s adventures are. This oddity of a space odyssey will have you chuckling at the ridiculousness of the guns, groaning at the brilliantly awful jokes, and dazzling at the stunning world that Insomniac Games has created, with a colour palette to make any galaxy jealous. This is absolutely the magic of the original brought onto the PS4 in a beautiful remaster that proves that games don’t need to be totally overhauled to be brought onto current gen consoles. This is fun, imaginative and utterly wonderful.

The female-led Uncharted that you absolutely have to play
Release Date: 2017Developer: Naughty DogGenre: Action adventure
+Incredibly compelling fresh protagonists+Storyline is one of the best in the series+Absolutely stunning visuals
-Empty List
While Nathan Drake has been the face of the Uncharted series since it debuted in 2007 on the PS3, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (opens in new tab) is all about giving someone else a turn. Drake moves aside to let two female characters from the series – both former villains/double crossers, I might add – in the form of Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross. The two women are a compelling double act that still retain the feisty, tongue-in-cheek antics that’s synonymous with the Uncharted series, but with a fresh take on the boisterous bromance of Sully and Drake. Brilliant set pieces, top notch puzzles, and a touch of the supernatural all add up to make this an Uncharted spin-off that could just be the start of a new Uncharted tale.

Epic monsters on an epic console
Release Date: 2018Developer: Team IcoGenre: Action adventure
+Atmospheric and intriguing world building+Cinematic and thrilling boss battles+Monsters look fantastic
-Empty List
Shadow of the Colossus (opens in new tab) is one of those games that everyone wanted to be remastered for years upon years. And then it happened. Announced at E3 2017, but arrived in February 2018, this is the kind of game that makes huge ripples in the gaming industry, because it still felt as thought-provoking and artistic as it did when it originally released some 13 years earlier on the PS2. This is a genuine slice of gaming history, and you owe it to yourself to experience it.

A beautiful swan song for the PS4
Release Date: 2020Developer: Sucker PunchGenre: Open world

You’ll be thankful for every minute you spend in the beautiful, full, and surprisingly chill world of Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch’s latest takes an Assassin’s Creed-style Japan, adds a Red Dead Redemption 2-sized world, and blends in an entire library’s worth of Akira Kurosawa movies to create this tribute to the Japanese culture is so clearly reveres. This is a fantastic swan song for the PS4.

One of the smartest narrative games ever made
Release Date: 2018Developer: Quantic DreamGenre: Adventure
+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+So many endings to see+Looks incredible
The latest game to join this exclusive club, Detroit: Become Human is a tour de force of storytelling. It follows the story of three Androids, who all break their programming to become ‘free’ in the year 2038. As well as looking insanely pretty, this game does some interesting things with player choice – not only do you genuinely feel in control of the destiny of each character, but you’re also made aware of the different story paths you could have taken at the end of each level. It’s light on action, but heavy on talking, but that’s the point here. Once you invest in the various characters, and their struggles, you’ll be hooked… and you’ll genuinely fret over some of the game’s tougher moral choices.

One of the finest JRPGs around
Release Date: 2016Developer: AtlusGenre: JRPG
+A classic JRPG+Masses of depth+Looks amazing
Playing Persona 5 (opens in new tab) borders on overstimulation due to its sheer sense of style, where everything from the colorful visuals and snazzy soundtrack to the vibrant menus and peppy voice acting is vying for your rapt attention. This accessible-yet-deep JRPG is like a playable anime, following a group of Japanese high schoolers who become empowered as the Phantom Thieves, bettering society by stealing the coveted items corrupting the hearts of delusional adults. Whether you’re infiltrating the psychological palaces of your chosen target or simply hanging out and building friendships via a wide variety of after-school activities, Persona 5 offers over 100 hours of joy to anyone with even the slightest affinity for JRPG adventures. And yes, you can technically play it on PS3 – but then you’d be missing out on that sweet, sweet 1080p resolution.

A sweeping epic that began life on PS3
Release Date: 2016Developer: SonyGenre: Adventure
+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Prequel to Shadow of the Colossus+Unique story
Fumito Ueda’s games are renowned for the way they stir the player’s emotions and sense of wonderment, and after years of waiting and wondering if it would ever see the light of day, The Last Guardian (opens in new tab) lives up to the same high standard as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. You play as a young boy marooned among ancient ruins, befriending a humongous bird/dog hybrid named Trico as the two of you make your way towards freedom. Trico’s unique, at times disobedient, AI makes him feel like a truly living creature you need to coax and cooperate with in order to solve a variety of third-person puzzles, creating a bond between player and animal that’s not unlike the companionship of a real-world pet.

Nathan Drake’s latest and greatest
Release Date: 2016Developer: Naughty DogGenre: Adventure
+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Incredible looking game+Cracking multiplayer options
Like all the greatest action movies, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (opens in new tab) knows when to balance explosive set-pieces and riveting car chases with quieter moments of human drama and warmth. Nathan Drake’s still a lovable modern-day Indiana Jones, hunting for treasure and evading armed goons with panache, but watching him interact with his loved ones – Elena, Sully, and even his newly introduced brother Sam, all brought to life via fantastic mocapped performances – is more rewarding than the discovery of any ancient secret. Uncharted 4 is a fitting end for Nathan’s story, and playing it feels like completing the satisfying final chapter in a beloved adventure book that’s made an indelible mark on your heart.

From the creators of the Dark Souls series
Release Date: 2015Developer: FromSoftwareGenre: Action RPG
+Super hardcore game+Amazing gothic atmosphere+Going cheap in 2018
The night is dark and full of terrors, the majority of which will mercilessly kill you in seconds if you’re not careful. But that’s a risk you’ll just have to take to explore and experience Bloodborne (opens in new tab)‘s gorgeous gothic city of Yharnam, the setting for From Software’s brilliant spin-off that experiments with the studio’s own Dark Souls designs. This elegant third-person action RPG opts for a quicker pace of play compared to classic Souls without devaluing the need for constant caution and alertness, lest you fall prey to a diverse range of horrific monsters lurking through the Victorian-era environments. The dual forms of each melee weapon, mixed with the careful timing of pistol-enabled parries, gives you even more room to express your preferred fighting style as you claw your way from one memorable boss encounter or picturesque vista to the next, guided (or hostilely invaded) by the ghosts of other players.

The greatest superhero game of the generation
+Movement is incredible+Looks amazing+Loads to do
-Empty List
Easily the best superhero game of recent years, Spider-Man is an absolute storming exclusive for PS4. It looks incredible, is stuffed full of things to see and do, and it feels glorious to play. From the moment you take your first swing around NYC, to the later stages when you’re mixing together movement, combat, and powers this is an absolute delight to just sit and play. The story is gripping, funny, and genuinely surprising in places, and the presentation is slick as hell. It very much captures the spirit of both the comics and the new Marvel versions of Spidey. If you’re looking for something brand new, which will wow your friends and keep you playing for weeks and weeks… this is the one for you.

An incredible open-world adventure
Release Date: 2017Developer: Guerrilla GamesGenre: Adventure
+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Beautiful photo mode+A massive adventure
We’ve seen far too many desolate, lifeless, post-apocalyptic wastelands in games, to the point where they’ve become as dreary as the crumbling world they portray. But Horizon Zero Dawn (opens in new tab) dares to push far, far beyond the fall of modern society to give us a glimpse at a new chapter for humanity, where primitive tribes have slowly begun to rebuild among unique species of sentient, robotic wildlife that roam and own the now-verdant ruins of metropolitan areas. You explore Horizon’s expansive, enchanting open world as Aloy, an instantly likeable lead who’s a capable and courageous hunter in this far-future frontier. Establishing diplomatic relations with other human tribes, exploring the breathtaking environment (and capturing Kodak moments with the delightful photo mode (opens in new tab)), hunting down every last secret tucked away in the sprawling landscape, trying to bag yourself a massive dino-like Thunderjaw – whatever you set out to do in Horizon Zero Dawn, it’s going to be incredible.

The best action PS4 title
Release Date: 2018Developer: Sony Santa MonicaGenre: Adventure
+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Looks incredible+A brilliant, action-filled story
Yes, it’s that good. The latest God of War, which essentially reboots the franchise and takes it to a whole new setting, is the best game you can play on PS4. And that’s something we may well be saying until PS5 inevitably rolls out. Ditching the linear action structure of the originals, this outing lets you explore a fully realised, utterly beautiful Norse world, picking fights and solving puzzles as you go. The story is both well written and well paced, with Kratos far more than a one-dimensional murder-machine now. Enemies are well constructed too, and the combat is just as fluid and thrilling as it always was. There are heaps of things to discover, and each new area is more jaw-dropping and feature-packed than the next. Only Horizon comes close to showing the power and versatility of the PlayStation in the same way, making God of War an essential purchase for anyone with a Dualshock in their hands and a hankering for a fresh experience.

]]>The post Horizon Zero Dawn gets 60fps support on PS5 appeared first on Game News.
]]>During Gamescom Opening Night Live, game director Mathijs de Jonge announced that “the patch for 60fps support for Horizon Zero Dawn on PlaySation 5 is live right now.” de Jonge didn’t share more information, but said that fans would be able to find out more for themselves on developer Guerilla’s social channels.
In a tweet (opens in new tab), Guerilla confirmed that “the Enhanced Performance Patch for Horizon Zero Dawn on PlayStation 5 is live now.” As well as unlocking 60fps mode, the patch, which is free for all PS5 players, offers 4K checkerboard resolution.
Unfortunately, Guerilla’s appearance at Opening Night Live wasn’t all good news. Citing disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, de Jonge announced a delay for Horizon Zero Dawn’s sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. Originally set to release this year, the game will now arrive early next year, launching on February 18, 2022. Rumours of that delay had been circling for a while, but this is the official confirmation from Guerilla that fans have been half-expecting for a while now.
While we’ll be waiting until next year to join Aloy and friends on their journey into the mysterious Forbidden West, if you can’t wait until then, you won’t only have the PS5 patch to keep you occupied. If you can’t contain the hype, you’ll be able to pre-order the game starting next year, from September 2.
If you need a few new games to tide you over until Aloy’s next adventure, check out our list of upcoming PS5 games.

Location: North of Song’s Edge, at a dyeing camp
Travel to the campfire that’s south of the Frostfigures Tallneck. Run south east until you see a large wooden watchtower; the dyeing camp’s right next to it. Go to where there are yellow bits of cloth hanging up, near the walkways that stretch across the water. Just behind this is a tall geyser with pale yellow colouring around the top, with the telltale purple diamond hovering above it. In here you’ll find the pigment.

Location: West of Stone Yield
First, travel to Stone Yield (if you haven’t cleared the bandit camp yet, there’s a campfire directly to the North for you to travel to instead). You’ll need to clear out the bandits before you can find this pigment. Once you’re done sowing death and destruction, head to the upper level where you fought the Bandit Leader. Clamber up the big spiky pile of detritus on the west side of the enclosure and fall down to the hot springs below the wall. In a tall geyser with a pale beige colour at the top you’ll find the pigment.

Location: South west of the two colourful hot springs (near the Trampler site)
Travel to the campfire east of the Dam (again). Head northeast to the hot springs. There’ll be Watchers and Longlegs milling about, so you might want to take care of them first. The pigment can be found in a tall geyser with pale yellow at the top on the side of the same hot springs that are being patrolled by robots.

Location: Centre of the map, by a Frostclaw site
Go to the campfire that’s north of the Frostfigures Tallneck and a bluegleam merchant. Travel north until you get to the sheer rock face and see the handholds leading upwards. You’ll end up at a tent and campfire. Head north towards the Frostclaw site (and be very, very careful). Sneak towards the rock platform that’s by the blue Banuk lanterns, and get to the top of it. At the top near some collectable herbs you’ll find the pigment in a hole in the rock formation.

Location: North of the map, north of Stone Yield
Go to the campfire in the centre of the map, near the trampler site and the two colourful hot springs. Follow the north eastern road and after starting to climb a hill on your right you’ll see the ledges that lead up a rockface. Climb up these all the way to the top, where you’ll incidentally find some bluegleam. Run forwards more and climb up the next set of handholds, and wouldn’t you know, at the top there’s some more bluegleam. Follow the path that heads north along the edge of the mountain, and you’ll see the pigment in a hole in the rockface on your left.

Location: South west of the Dam, on the top of a mountain range
Go to the campfire that’s east of the Dam. Head south until you run face-first into a mountain range. Run eastwards along it until you get to a gap between the two mountain ridges. Enter the gap and you’ll see a zipwire and tall rocky column straight in front of you. Climb up the column, and jump over to the western ridge using the handholds in the rock. Clamber up all the way to the top (the next set of hand holds is on the other side of the zipwire, so be careful when you jump around it). Climb up and around to the west, following the path along the side of the mountain. Keeping going up until you get to the very top – you’ll pass several Banuk paintings on your way. At the pinnacle there’s a hole in the rock outlined in pale yellow, in which you’ll find the pigment.

Location: On the Shaman’s Path on the way to Ourea’s Retreat
You’ll need to collect this one during The Shaman’s Path quest for ultimate efficiency. Go to the rope bridge you pushed down that’s just in front of the water-operated bridge. Climb down it, and head over the walkway. Follow the walkways around the stone column until you’re beside the waterfall. There’ll be a lootable supply crate on the right side of the pigment, which is on a rock that’s coloured a bright yellow.

Location: South east of the map, east of a Stalker site
Travel to Longshot. Follow the road west, and take the path that goes along the northern side of the lake. When you’re almost at the far western edge of the lake, go down to the shoreline. Walk along it until you see the pigment, which is along the rocky bank in a tall geyser with a pale orange top.

Location: South west of the ruins, near a ice fishing camp
Teleport to the campfire that’s just west of a Scorcher site in the western part of the map (it’s also southwest of a Longleg site). Follow the road North until you get to the iced-over lake, where the fishing camp is. Go directly to the west of the lake, following the road up the slight slope. Keep your eyes to the right and you’ll see a rock with a rusty-coloured top in front of some ordinary stone. Loot it and you’ll find the pigment.
Go to the special merchant in Song’s Edge – she’s just north of the bluegleam merchant – to hand in the pigments. You’ll have to climb very far up a wooden structure to get near her, but in return she’ll paint you a nice picture… on the side of a god damn mountain. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

The first creature in the game, which will knock you out if it gets half a chance, watchers alert every machine nearby with a mighty screech if they see you. Take them out quickly and without causing a fuss – if you can. These velociraptor-like machines are most vulnerable to being shot in the eye. Funny, that. A couple of well-placed arrows in their ocular orifice will take them down in no time. Or you can get close and stealthily whack them with a spear if you have the ‘silent strike’ ability. Just watch out for their leaping attack and the flaming laser balls they’ll fire your way.

Along with watchers, Striders are some of the first enemies you’ll encounter, and they’re pretty easy to deal with as long as you don’t let yourself get cornered. Either get in close and hack them once you learn the override ability (then use them as a mount), or use a fire arrow on the blaze canister on its backside to take it out. If you’re lucky it’ll damage any nearby enemies too in a huge explosion, as blaze is the equivalent of a molotov cocktail.

Similar to giant reindeers, these would-be herbivores are about as easy to take down as a strider. Lure them close with a whistle from the tall grass, then silently strike them to take them down in one hit. Or, if you don’t mind running the risk of making an entire herd of them scatter, aim for the blaze canisters on their haunches to deal a chunk of damage. Fire at their antlers to disable their ramming attack too if they look like they’re about to charge.

Scrappers are some of the first robots that’ll give you a real hard time in Horizon, as they often come in packs and can whittle your health down easily if you’re not careful. They’ll use a laser gun along with a pounce attack, which when paired with its saw-blade mouth makes them a bit of a pain. Dodge liberally, and bring your hardpoint arrows or shock weaponry to take out its powercell on its hindquarters, or the gun on its back.

These hunks of metal are a tad stronger than ordinary Watchers, so you’ll need to stay low and quiet to take them out. If you’ve got the multiple arrow perk, notch up a couple in your bowstring and fire at the eye – just make sure the question mark above their head doesn’t turn into an exclamation mark. A stealthy silent strike is a surefire way to take them out quickly, as long as you make sure you don’t get spotted.

Broadheads are big, bull-like robots you’ll see wandering around once you make it into the more arid lands of Horizon: Zero Dawn. They’re a bit like grazers – they’ll tend not to attack unless disturbed, but they have a blaze canister on their backs like the Striders that you can blow up with fire arrows. Or, if you use armor-piercing weapons, you break off its horns to prevent it from charging you. They’re also mountable, so an especially tanky steed is just one override away.

Bigger, angrier grazers, these machines have drills for antlers and aren’t afraid to let you know it. You guessed it: aim for these protrusions first to disable their charging attack, and bear in mind that you’re probably taking on a handful at a time. Put down traps before attacking to get rid of a couple at once, or use tripwires to stall multiple Lancehorns while you take down their buddies. Stealthily killing them one by one from the long grass is your best bet, as these machines get angry quickly.

These big ostrich-like bots will turn you into a whimpering wreck if you don’t know how to deal with them, as they can stun you with a powerful sonic blast and call for reinforcements if you don’t take them out fast enough. Hiding is a tricky strategy too, as they can send out a pulse which’ll detect you if you’re laying low in the tall grass. Use shock weaponry and armor-piercing arrows to take out the antenna on their head if you want to be extra careful. Aim for the lung sacs on their chest to cause the most damage and disable their sonic attack, or fire at the blue canisters on their haunches.

Imagine a Charger got really, really angry. That’s a Trampler. The bisons of the machine word, your priority with these should be shooting their horns so they can’t charge you and then trample you whilst you’re staggered. It’s likely you’re dealing with a whole herd too, so consider using bombs to cause large areas of effect, or a ropecaster to tie some of them down whilst you deal with the others. They’re not particularly difficult; just make sure you don’t get cornered.

The Sawtooth is the first big boss fight you’ll come across in Horizon, but once you get a few levels under your belt, you’ll be able to take them out easily. The sabretooth-cat-like robots have a blaze canister like other robots, but they keep it on their underbelly, so you’ll need to use your rope caster to pin it down to reach it. Or simply pelt it with fire arrows until it’s good and toasty, then lay into it with your armor-piercing bolts. Or you can prepare the area beforehand with tripwires and traps to make short work of the feline machine.

If you’re feeling benevolent you can simply fire a couple of arrows at the large claw holding the massive canister to their back. The canister will pop out, you can sprint in and pick it up and then flee. If not, I recommend attacking from the behind as much as possible. Their pincers make for some devastating frontal attacks, but luckily they’re pretty slow. Disable these bits first, then make sure you stay behind it to get the most strikes in with the least risk possible.

These big guys are pretty deadly, especially if they hang out with a crowd of other, more nimble beasts like watchers. Either they’ll charge at you and make a huge dent in your health, or shoot flames out of their mouth and fry you from a pretty impressive distance. Use your ice attacks on its body to freeze it, then take out the big blaze cargo sac on its back to take out its flamethrower. Use flame arrows to cause a massive explosion if you have a flair for the dramatic. When it lifts its head up to use its flamethrower aim for the green glands around its neck, as – unfortunately for the Bellowback – these respond well to being shot repeatedly.

These guys, as you’ll have guessed, use frost instead of fire. Frost makes anyone it hits much more susceptible to damage, so you’ll understand why they should be avoided unless you want a tricky fight. Like the Flame Bellowback, aim first for the giant container of liquid on their back to cause a huge explosion – fire arrows come in handy here as frost types are often susceptible to it. Then don’t forget to target the glands either side of its head to take out its spewing-frost-and-death attack.

Chargers…well, they charge at you. So dodging is pretty essential with this fight. They’re like big rams, and when alerted they’ll speed towards you astonishingly fast. Treat them like more aggressive Broadhorns, aiming for the horns and the blaze canister on its hindlegs. Also consider tying some down with a ropecaster, as they’re a melee-based attacker and will be helpless when they have their face planted in the grass.

]]>That means you can expect a bigger, more diverse, and – yes – even prettier open world to explore in Horizon Forbidden West, one that will utilise the next-gen features of the PS5 while also being playable on its predecessor – ensuring that every Horizon fan will get to experience this much anticipated sequel when it launches later this year.

Game Horizon Forbidden West
Developer Guerrilla Games

Platforms PS5, PS4
Release 2021
Forbidden West’s announcement at PlayStation’s PS5 showcase last year will have come as no surprise to those familiar with Guerrilla’s first new IP since the original Killzone. Horizon Zero Dawn’s breathtaking world, compelling characters, and unique action-RPG combat has already established Aloy as a PlayStation icon for the next-generation, while also proving the Dutch studio’s talent beyond the realms of the first-person shooter. In short, a sequel was all but inevitable.
“We’re so excited to spend more time in this world, expanding its lore and continuing Aloy’s journey,” a Guerrilla spokesperson told GamesRadar, after we went looking for new information. “There are so many gameplay and storytelling possibilities in this universe and we can’t wait to explore them further in Horizon Forbidden West.”
Guerrilla is remaining cryptic about the nature of those storytelling possibilities for now, but we do know that Aloy is on a journey to save her civilization once again, after discovering a mysterious plague that appears to be corrupting both the natural world and the mechanised dinosaurs that roam, swim, and fly across it. Lance Reddick’s enigmatic Sylens is back, likely to play a more antagonistic role this time around, while we can also expect an expanded bestiary of zoomorphic machines to tame and conquer. If you thought taking down the Thunderjaw was a challenge, wait till you set your sights upon the elephantine Tremortusk, or the swamp-dwelling Shellsnapper. Guerrilla teases that each new foe will offer their own unique test on Aloy’s abilities as a hunter.
“Part of what made the machine combat in Horizon Zero Dawn so satisfying was the puzzle-solving element in each encounter. What is this machine’s attack pattern? What are its weaknesses? Which strategies are most successful? There was the harsh reality of stumbling upon machines that you weren’t quite ready to take on. Our reveal trailer showed players they can look forward to things they’ve never seen before, but we’d like to leave it at that for now and preserve as much of that satisfaction for players to discover for themselves.”

Combat isn’t the only area of Horizon Forbidden West where Guerrilla is expanding and enriching the foundation it set with Zero Dawn. As seen in the reveal trailer, Aloy now possesses an underwater breathing apparatus, which allows her to descend into Earth’s lakes and oceans, uncovering new treasures, revelations, and threats beneath.
The Nora Brave will wield a greater command of her environment in general, it seems, as we spot her riding more machines, summiting greater heights, and spelunking ever deeper amongst the ruins and bunkers of a lost society. Could we perhaps eventually unlock the ability to take to the skies atop one of the pterodactyl-like Sunwings? It would certainly make for a great way of getting around.
Guerrilla stops short of revealing anything more about its next iteration of future Earth, but promises “a dangerous, mysterious place, filled with new challenges and discoveries”. Can we blame the studio for being so cryptic? Half the joy of Horizon Zero Dawn was in discovering its best kept secrets, after all. Aloy is just as curious as we are when it comes to unlocking the mysteries of her homeland, too not long now before we can embark on the odyssey together.
Big in 2021 is GamesRadar’s month-long celebration of the new year. Every day, we will be exploring the most anticipated games on the near horizon with brand new previews and exclusive developer interviews.

]]>The post Horizon Zero Dawn PC patch 1.02 targets “the more frustrating crashes” appeared first on Game News.
]]>The PC build of Horizon looks great, but it’s prone to hard crashes which seem to vary greatly between individual hardware setups. Patch 1.02 targets these directly, and while it doesn’t fix everything, developer Guerilla Games says it has addressed some of the “more frustrating” crashes around. Here are the key lines from the patch notes (which you can view in full here (opens in new tab)):
Patch 1.02 also addresses performance dips during auto-saving, locked V-sync in borderless windowed mode, facial animations breaking due to FPS limits, and excess memory usage tied to shaders. Guerilla Games previously said that improving the PC port would be its “highest priority” (opens in new tab) going forward, and as evidenced by its updated report system, it encourages players to continue reporting issues big and small.
If you’re getting into Horizon for the first time, you’re in for a treat – and you’ll benefit from these Horizon Zero Dawn tips (opens in new tab).

]]>As catalogued by Reddit (opens in new tab), the official Guerilla Jobs Twitter account (opens in new tab) recently posted about a job listing for a Senior AI Programmer “who can make a difference in the design and implementation of the systems that make our NPCs come to life”, using the #PS5 hashtag alongside the link to the vacancy.

PS5 specs (opens in new tab) – what’s inside the next-generation PlayStation console?
The Tweet no longer exists, but the remaining screenshots of the post do indeed suggest that Guerrilla is hard at work on a potentially exclusive title for Sony’s next-gen console, which is slated to launch later this year, provided there’s no PS5 delay (opens in new tab) brought about by current lockdown measures around the globe.
Previous clues have indeed provided further evidence that a sequel to Guerrilla’s 2017 open world hit is in the works, with older job listings (opens in new tab) even suggest Horizon Zero Dawn 2 could include more online or multiplayer elements alongside its story-based campaign.
While it’s anyone’s guess as to how far along development of the project is, the latest rumours imply that PlayStation isn’t far off from unveiling more details about the PS5 (opens in new tab), including the upcoming slate of PS5 launch games (opens in new tab). Could Horizon Zero Dawn 2 be one of them? Not long till we find out now…

Do you yearn for a way to prove your allegiance to a videogame/TV show/movie/comic? One that also happens to be sickeningly adorable? Funko Pops are the answer. You can get Erend, Eclipse Cultist, Watcher, or – of course – an Aloy figurine. This figurine even has her notoriously determined expression, plus she looks ready to destroy any Watcher lurking around thanks to the bow at her side. Her Nora outcast outfit has an attention to detail every cosplayer would appreciate: the textured wrappings over her legs, gadgets on her belt, and wild hair are all spot on. Pop her (pun not intended) on your desk at work or home for an extra boost of motivation. Trust me, glancing at her uncompromising black eyes when you’re just about to start procrastinating makes it feel like she’s disappointed in you. Don’t look at me like that, Aloy. Fine, I’ll get back to work…
Buy it US: $13.95 from Pop In A Box (opens in new tab)
Buy it UK: £9.99 from Pop In A Box (opens in new tab)

Perhaps 10cm tall is too high for your liking. Perhaps you want something discreet to carry around in your bag or hold in your hand for good luck. Whatever logical reason you could have for wanting an even smaller Horizon figurine, Funko yet again has you covered. These small characters stand only three inches tall and you can choose between robots, heroes, or villains. Just in case you understand where Helis was coming from. Or you might want a reminder of the raw power of the Thunderjaw (and a sly reminder of how many times Aloy got trampled by it). Either way, Funko Minis will keep you guessing as it’s pure luck which figurine you unwrap – so why not roll those dice?
Buy it US/UK: $9.95 on Amazon (opens in new tab)

It’s a daily tragedy that we can’t wear the glorious outfits sported by the Banuk, Carja, Oseram, or Nora. But until the days come where wearing tribal robot-armour is the norm, this t-shirt will have to do. Aloy’s majestic figure is painted on the front, wielding her bow in preparation for any machines that should stumble her way. It’s made of cotton so it’s sure to be comfy no matter the weather, which is more than we can say for the heavy outfits worn by the people you meet in Horizon: Zero Dawn.

No, you can’t fit any shards in here as this wallet is made for the slim, paper banknotes we prize in today’s society. It would definitely look ungainly if it was big enough to fit in the undoubtedly heavy metal shards Aloy carries around, so perhaps we should be grateful that we can get our hands on the lighter, slimmer version. The heavy stitching makes it look like it was crafted by the Nora themselves. Made of faux leather, if you close your eyes you could almost believe that it’s the product of the boars that you hunted throughout the Embrace. Almost.

Spending even 60 hours in Aloy’s world isn’t nearly enough. After all, the thought put into designing everything ranging from deadly robots, poignant ruins, to fascinating cultures is palpable. Luckily for all of us who appreciate of the finer things in life, The Art of Horizon Zero Dawn exists. The illustrations inside give us a glimpse into the process that created the game, delving even deeper into how our favourite characters and robots evolved into the things we fight alongside or against in Horizon: Zero Dawn. Simply put: the illustrations inside are super pretty.

Some people value simplicity. Understated style. Minimalism. This statue isn’t for anyone like that. Dedicated to immortalising Aloy in glorious PVC, the attention to detail is astonishing. No wonder, as it’s been designed from the same digital files that bring Aloy to life in the game, meaning that it’s the closest you’re going to get to a real-life Aloy (sorry, cosplayers). There’s shading on her brightly-coloured Nora outfit, right down to the tiniest details in the stitching and the feathers tied to her bow. The bowstring is even elastic so you can ping it and feel like you have a slim understanding of what it must be like to fire out arrows with devastating accuracy. Kinda.
Buy it US/UK: $39.99 on Amazon (opens in new tab)

There really is something for everyone here. Not a fan of statues or Funkos? Try a plushie! Soft, cute, and most definitely not a choking hazard unless you’re a Sawtooth with a massive mouth, Aloy in squishy form just looks a tad too adorable to imagine with a bow or spear. The sight of which, standing at the foot of your bed at night, is quite terrifying to contemplate. She’s about 6” tall, making her perfect to put alongside your PS4 if you need something calming to look at after being massacred by a Frostclaw again.

Buy it UK: £15.99 on Amazon (opens in new tab)

Not all of us can wear Rost’s heavy boar skin cloak when it gets chilly. Not least because the sight of a dead boar on your shoulder is enough to make your office colleagues freak out and probably ring the RSPCA. Instead, if you want to keep cosy in the winter months try this hoodie on for size. Even better, it’s a pale beige so it blends into the undergrowth. Perfect for when you’re practising with your spear and bow in your back garden in preparation for the apocalypse. Complete with beads and that Nora hand-stitched look, Aloy would probably be sporting it herself if she stepped out of your PS4 into this dimension. After she tries to shoot your Roomba with her bow.
Buy it US: $52.49 on Amazon (opens in new tab)
Buy it UK: £54.67 on Amazon (opens in new tab)

You’ve got your t-shirt. You’ve got your hoodie. Hell, you might even have a custom-made focus in your ear, ready to highlight any robots (or car parking meters – probably similar enough) in the distance. But what don’t you have? A bag. This Horizon: Zero Dawn messenger satchel solves that problem though, and looks perfectly authentic to boot. Padded with a bright red interior and emblazoned with the Horizon logo on the front, it’s 33cm wide, 37cm high and 6cm deep, big enough for your laptop. Or your hoard of metal shards. Whichever one floats your Snapmaw.

]]>The DLC is still largely a mystery, though we know it will add new story, a new area, and new robo-creatures to fight. And as you probably could’ve guessed from the title, it takes place in a snowy region of the Horizon world. There’s an ominous, smoking mountain, and mention of a beast guarding it, so no doubt Aloy will have her work cut out for her when The Frozen Wilds lands.
While we can’t be sure, there’s convincing evidence that The Frozen Wilds takes place in Yellowstone (opens in new tab), and that at least one of the new beasties is a robo-bear. Or gorilla. Either way, should make for some great Horizon photo shoots (opens in new tab).
