Rockstar has delayed the physical release of the GTA Trilogy pushing it from early this month to December 17, 2021.

In a tweet posted by Rockstar (opens in new tab), the developer announced: “The release dates for the physical versions of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition have changed.” Rather than releasing on December 7, 2021, like originally planned, the physical version of the collection will now be released on December 17, 2021.

If you were hoping to pick up the Nintendo Switch version of the remastered GTA Trilogy, however, we have some bad news. The Nintendo Switch version of the collection has been pushed back even further to an unspecified date sometime in 2022.

It’s possible that this delay could be due to the hefty update Rockstar released for the GTA Trilogy yesterday, which featured well over 100 fixes in the game from issues with misspellings on signs, UI errors, and several problems related to the rain in the game. Perhaps most notably though, the update reintroduced San Andreas’ foggy skyline, something fans have been petitioning for since the remastered collection was released.

Unfortunately, it’s been a rocky start for the GTA Trilogy which seems to consistently come up against issue after issue even before its release last month. Not only was the game full of bugs – prior to the latest update – it also missed out a tonne of classic elements which left a lot of long-time fans disappointed. This includes some of the game’s soundtrack and some of the classic cheats in the original titles.

Find out what the Grand Theft Auto community thinks of the GTA Trilogy’s turbulent launch.

A group of GTA modders has hit back against a lawsuit from the game’s publisher, claiming changes they made were permissible under the copyright act.

Earlier this year, the modders confirmed that they had fully reverse-engineered GTA 3 and GTA Vice City, eventually releasing versions of each game known as ‘re3’ and ‘reVC’, respectively. In response, Take-Two Interactive, parent company of original developer Rockstar Games, filed a DMCA takedown against the project, which was then overturned. In September, Take-Two sued the modding group, filing a lawsuit stating that it had infringed on the company’s copyright.

Now, the modders have responded, issuing a legal answer to Take-Two’s suit (via Torrentfreak (opens in new tab)). Their main response is that the work they did constitutes ‘Fair Use’, which can allow the use of copyrighted material in material such as criticism, teaching, or research. In particular, they claim that their work on the game is ‘transformative’ – that it doesn’t simply copy the original, but builds upon it.

As well as noting the improvements they had made to the games, the modders pointed out that Rockstar and Take-Two “ceased releasing updates to the complained of software […] years before any complained of actions” and that their work didn’t impact the market for the original games. That may have been accurate when the source code was engineered in February, and even when the lawsuit was filed in September, but may lose some relevance as a defense in the wake of the re-release of the two games as part of the GTA Trilogy, announced in October and released last week.

The group also points out, however, that Rockstar and Take-Two have “allowed others to undertake the development of ‘mods’ of its software,” and “encouraged and supported others undertaking the development of ‘mods’,” even going so far as to showcase them, “without any adverse action” in the past.

It’s an interesting quirk of timing, as not all that long ago, it’s unlikely that Take-Two would have been too concerned about the modding scene of its older games. With the GTA Trilogy now available, however, there was a chance that the existence of these mod projects would have limited sales, which is likely why it’s taking action now, having allowed other mods to exist without legal pressure in the past. Given that other modders are already going to work on the remastered games, however, it’ll be interesting to see what further action Take-Two takes.

Revealed by Twitter account @PlaystationSize (opens in new tab), the GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition has increased its file size a considerable amount since each game’s original release in 2001, 2002, and 2004 respectively.

GTA 3 was originally 1.569 GB (the PS2 version on PS4) whereas it’ll take up 5.293 in the upcoming trilogy. GTA: Vice City is even more of a jump going from 2.392 GB originally to 10.768 GB in the Definitive Edition. The most impressive however is GTA: San Andreas which started at 3.230 GB however will soon take up 22.679 GB.

This means that the original trilogy took up 7.191 GB altogether on the PS4 whereas the new trilogy looks to be coming in at 38.74 GB on PlayStation. Although it’s five times bigger than the original collection, that’s still pretty moderate compared to other high profile releases this year.

There’s a very good reason for this increase though, as all three games have been upgraded to today’s standards. The GTA trilogy will now feature a range of visual improvements from reworked character and vehicle models, a resolution upgrade, a rebuilt lighting system, and more. Not only this but the game will also now support improved dynamic weather aesthetics, sharper shadows, clearer reflections, and more.

The GTA Trilogy will also feature a load of new achievements, which were leaked in the GTA Forum a few weeks ago. According to the leak, each game in the collection will have between 40 – 50 achievements to unlock; including one which is based on the “here we go again” GTA meme, which can be obtained by starting a new game after completing one 100% in GTA: San Andreas.

The GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition will launch in just a few days on November 11, 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

The GTA Trilogy trailer is here, alongside a host of details about what to expect from the remastered trilogy when it launches later this year.

After the GTA Trilogy release date of November 11 was discovered earlier today, Rockstar dropped the first official trailer for the collection, which you can enjoy at the top of this story, which showcases the game’s improved visuals.

According to a Rockstar press release, these improvements include a resolution upgrade, a rebuilt lighting system that will see improved weather, shadows, and reflections, alongside “upgraded” character and vehicle models, as well as increased draw distance, so all three games look crisper than ever without sacrificing their original aesthetic.

Outside of the graphics, the rest of the games are getting a major overhaul to how they handle. Rockstar has confirmed that “new GTAV-inspired modern controls” will be part of the package, which should allow players to feel more at home in the older versions of Los Santos and Liberty City, while improvements to targeting, enhanced mini-map navigations (we’re praying for later GTA’s sat-nav inspired approach), updated weapon and radio wheels, as well as Gyro aiming for the Nintendo Switch version of the trilogy.

Alongside the trailer, we also got a look at three new screenshots of the cities we’ve all spent countless hours causing chaos in just below. Vice City, in particular, has our teenage memories flooding back.

With GTA 3 celebrating its 20th anniversary today, it’s little surprise that Rockstar is using the date to bring us a fresh look at its remastered collection. The only question is, will you be downloading immediately on November 11 or waiting for the physical release on December 7 when GTA – Definitive Edition heads to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Rockstar has also confirmed that GTA: San Andreas Definitive Edition will be heading to Xbox Games Press on November 11. (opens in new tab)

When developer DMA Design launched Grand Theft Auto in 1997, it caused one hell of a shit storm. The top-down crime simulator that portrayed low-res sprites stealing cars and murdering police officers hit the tabloid news headlines like a bullet. It was too real, despite not really looking real at all. Newspapers went to town, politicians lost their heads, and, at one point, the first GTA was even denounced in the houses of British parliament.

“The controversy was not the point. We didn’t set out to create the most controversial game or to shock or outrage or upset – we set out to, basically, rip off every heist movie, every crime caper, every cultural reference from book and film that we could get our hands on,” says Brian Baglow, the founder and director of the Scottish Games Network, and former DMA Design dev, latterly of Rockstar North. “Because, if you think back to the original game, everything was implied. It was top down, you couldn’t see inside buildings, all the mission stuff came from a pager that gave you, I think it was, 110 characters which could only be triggered by driving over specific spots on the map.”

“You couldn’t really have a massive amount of plot, you couldn’t really have shocking storylines, so an awful lot of what was controversial was taking place in people’s heads. As the series has evolved, not least with GTA 3, that has changed, but in all the right directions.”

“You couldn’t really have a massive amount of plot, you couldn’t really have shocking storylines, so an awful lot of what was controversial was taking place in people’s heads. As the series has evolved, not least with GTA 3, that has changed, but in all the right directions.”

Brian Baglow

Prior to Rockstar’s takeover of Dundee-based developer DMA Design, Baglow worked on the first and second GTA games as a writer, while also handling much of the games’ PR. Four years in the making, Grand Theft Auto itself had begun life as a cops and robbers-type racer named Race and Chase, wherein players took control of the authorities in an open world playground – a feature underused at the time due to technology constraints. Thing is, controlling police officers in an ambitious game world was boring, and all of the fun stuff – you know, knocking over pedestrians, running red lights, tearing up public parks, and generally breaking the law – could only be justified on the other side of the divide: on that of the criminals.

And so the controversy which has followed the enduring crime sim since was born, persisting in recent years as a result of the graphical fidelity facilitated by modern-generation hardware. GTA 3, of course, was the series’ first foray into 3D, delivering a new layer of realism, and, for some, terror in the process. For Baglow, this was very much an evolutionary thing. Having moved exclusively into PR at Rockstar in the lead up to GTA 3’s release, he was however pleased to see the third main series game building and growing what he and his colleagues at DMA had started.

“If you look at GTA 3, it took all of the fun stuff, all of the best bits out of GTA 1 and GTA 2 and stuck them into 3D,” says Baglow. “It did so many things so very well, but at its core, a lot of the capabilities were in GTA 1, it’s just that all of a sudden you could put it in 3D, and when you do that, all of these opportunities present themselves. Like, ‘oh, a baseball bat, let’s get that in there.’ We had a baseball in GTA 1, and the question was: what’s the difference between that and a punch for the little top-down figure? Nothing. Okay, get it out of there then. We were quite ruthless in terms of culling stuff because the technical capabilities weren’t there. We had to design to the least capable platform.”

“The moves to 3D would have happened quite naturally, I think, and if we could have made GTA 1 3D we would have. We were at a time when Doom had given way to Quake, and Quake had given way to Unreal Engine. Tomb Raider had moved on to Tomb Raider 2, Half-Life was there. I remember the joy of multiplayer games of Half-Life at lunchtime in the studio and being wowed by these fully 3D environments with multiple players all playing at once. The industry had made it possible for GTA 3 to happen.”

20 years later, Rockstar reflects on how GTA 3 “showed us the first glimpse of what was possible”

During its development, the first Grand Theft Auto was almost cancelled several times. GTA 2’s gang system was revolutionary, yet its ‘10 minutes into the future’ setting and premise didn’t quite hit the mark with players. With Baglow now working in PR ahead of the series’ first game under Rockstar North and to be released on PlayStation 2, he would have been more aware of the hype machine and its potential to make or break promising games more than most.

At that point, was there a moment when he realised GTA 3 was going to be big?

“There were several,” he says. “There were quite a few where it was clear there was going to be a massive reaction to this, and it happened in dribs and drabs. It wasn’t that it came out and it changed the world. It came out, and it got good reviews. But the last two games had received really good reviews. Gaming itself had grown, in a large part due to the console manufacturers like Sony and Nintendo. Sega was just dipping out with the Dreamcast. The PlayStation made gaming cool; it took it out of the living room and stuck it in clubs, and made it something cool, young people might like to enjoy. The gaming audience had been growing alongside the technology.”

“But there were so many little bits and pieces. I remember I flew into New York and I was wearing a GTA 2 t-shirt. I got to the airport in New York, and a border patrol said to me, ‘GTA 2? Is that the game?’ I said, yeah, I work at Rockstar, and he was like, ‘Oh my god! I hear number three is coming out, I’m getting it!’ At that point, I knew it was going to be quite big.”

“You saw it grow in little ways, with unexpected people mentioning it. Way back when we were doing number one, I had been doing a bit of guerilla marketing on my own by just emailing people, saying, ‘hey, we’ve just done this game where you can steal cars and shoot people’. One of the organisations I had emailed was Quentin Tarantino’s production company, A Band Apart, and never got a reply. That is, until GTA 3 came out. They had emailed somebody – it wasn’t me, I was no longer with the company – but they reached back out and were like, ‘nice game, can I get a free copy?’. Even though I’d left what was then Rockstar by this point, I was getting emails from record companies and music publishers I’d run into over the previous years looking for free copies – with the offer of reciprocal CDs or DVDs or whatever it was at the time. When Tarantino’s company got in touch looking for copies, that’s when I knew how big it was. That was the point where I thought GTA 3 could be really quite big for the series from thereon.”

Time flies

“When Tarantino’s company got in touch looking for copies, that’s when I knew how big it was. That was the point where I thought GTA 3 could be really quite big for the series from thereon.”

Brian Baglow

Now, 20 years since the launch of GTA 3, and 24 years since the arrival of the first Grand Theft Auto, Baglow looks back with pride, but also in astonishment. He’s immensely pleased to have helped put GTA on the map in its early days, and has been consistently impressed with the heights the series has, and continues to reach today. For Baglow, Grand Theft Auto stands alone. Sure, the likes of Saints Row and modern iterations of Driver, for example, have offered their own takes on the tried and tested formula, but none have come close to Rockstar’s open world juggernaut. Red Dead Redemption is perhaps the closest impersonator, which has taken GTA’s recipe and retrofitted it with spurred boots and horses.

Baglow is then adamant that not obsessing over the controversy in the late ‘90s was the right call. For him, doing so might even have derailed the series, preventing it from flourishing in the way it has over the last 20-some-odd years. Which is to say: Grand Theft Auto is a crime simulator with carjacking, firefights, and nefarious behaviour at surface level, but at its heart, it’s about giving players freedom, and letting them have fun.

“For me, that’s the most astonishing thing: it’s not been cloned, it’s not been copied, it’s not had a million imitators out there, because who can actually imitate it? There’s a reason that GTA 5 is still making money today, eight years after it first launched. GTA Online just had its best year ever. People are not getting sick of it. People are not switching off. And if we’d focused solely on the controversy way back at the start, if we’d focused on the car theft and crimes, I don’t think that passion would have lasted beyond a very few games. The point was not the controversy, it was the empowerment, giving players the opportunity to try stuff, and rewarding them accordingly.”

“The bottom line, with GTA 1 and GTA 2, with which I was directly involved, and with GTA 3 from the outside looking in, it’s been about fun. It’s been about making something fun. I think it’s been really subversive. While the outrage and the moral hysteria has been there, it’s really dark-humored, tongue-in-cheek and it speaks to people – the same you get from dark films. You’re a little bit uncomfortable. You only have to play a tiny bit of the games to realise that – and that applies to the first games, the third and all of the games that have come after that again.”

We can’t say for certain what Rockstar’s next game is all about, but that hasn’t stopped us speculating on the latest GTA 6 news and rumors.

GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas fans are using Steam reviews to urge others to buy the original versions of the three games before they’re gone forever.

Last week, Rockstar finally unveiled Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which repackages GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas into a remastered bundle. Consequently, Rockstar will remove the original versions of all three games from all storefronts, which users on Steam in particular aren’t happy about, as Eurogamer (opens in new tab) first reported.

In short, the users on Steam see this as a severe blow to game preservation. Users with hundreds, and even thousands of hours on record on all three GTA games on Steam are understandably saddened by Rockstar completely wiping the versions of the games they’re so attached to from the face of the planet, and so they’re urging others to share in the games they adore before they’re gone.

As Eurogamer notes however, the three GTA games might actually not be replaced on Steam. When the remastered trilogy was announced last week, Rockstar stated that the original three GTA games would be taken off Steam on PC, but that the remastered collection would only be available through the Rockstar Launcher on the platform. This could mean that the three GTA games are about to vanish from Steam in all forms forever.

Whatever happens, we won’t have to wait long to find out. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition launches at some point later this year, and it’ll be available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch.

The GTA remastered trilogy could be a full price game, according to one retailer listing.

That’s according to Base.com (opens in new tab), as spotted by the Twitter user below. The UK-based retailer has listed Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for £55 on last-gen consoles like PS4 and Xbox One, and £65 on new-gen platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

So @base_com have listed the price of “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition”It looks like £60rrp for PS4/Xbox one & Switch and it will cost £70 for PS5 & Xbox Series X.Also does this mean we’re getting a physical copy? #GTATrilogy pic.twitter.com/fugLeemsudOctober 10, 2021

However, it’s probably best not to take this as official confirmation of the price point for Rockstar’s remastered trilogy just yet. Base.com could merely be speculating about the final price of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition while publisher Take-Two waits to provide official information at some point further down the line.

Right now, all we know is that the remastered GTA collection will be dropping onto both last-gen and current-gen platforms, as well as PC via the Rockstar Launcher, at some point later this year. In fact, we’re currently without a release date or price point for Rockstar’s remastered collection, but we know that it’ll be bundling together GTA 3, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas into one package with enhanced visuals when it does arrive.
