From God of War and Spider-Man, to The Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn, the list of best PS4 exclusives really is impressive. Sony really has cemented its console platform as the place for exclusives, and continues that with the PS5 exclusives – although with its upcoming roster, Microsoft is looking to make a serious comeback.

Editor’s note – We’ve not added Horizon Forbidden West to this list (which launched February 18 on PS5 and PS5) because we believe it’s best experienced on the newest hardware.

Despite the fact that some of these have now made their way to PC , these are still PS5 exclusives when it comes to consoles. Most are available to play on the PS5 via PS5 backwards compatibility too, so their legendary status lives on. Plus, a lot of these titles will now be included for free as part of the new PS Plus Premium games libraries at the mid and upper tiers.

Before we get stuck in though, here are the rules we’ve laid down: this list of the best PS4 exclusives deals with console exclusivity, so some of them can be found on PC. Exclusivity has to be permanent and not timed (so we had to remove Nier: Automata when it released on Xbox One). Plus, the games have to be full-price releases, and not DLC or add-on content – though if we’re lucky they’ll show up on the free PS Plus games (opens in new tab) list at some point and there are always the best free PS4 games (opens in new tab) if you’re feeling thrifty.

Best PS4 exclusive games - GT Sport

20. GT Sport

The best racing game on PS4

Specifications

Release Date: 2017Developer: PolyphonyGenre: Racing

Reasons to buy

+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Compatible with racing wheels+Online tournaments and events

If you’re looking for a driving experience on PS4… there’s only one choice. Sure, DriveClub was the previous favorite, but GT Sport (opens in new tab) offers everything that game had a way more. There’s the usual raft of high-end sports cars to choose from, and a bunch of high-performance models from commercial manufacturers, along with many of the world’s best tracks, lovingly recreated in game. But what sets this apart is the online options, offering tournaments, special events, and loads more – you can essentially live the life of the most exciting, well-travelled professional racing driver… er, without the risk of crashing (or the millions of dollars they’d probably earn).

19. Concrete Genie

A magical adventure that will capture your imagination

Specifications

Release Date: 2019Developer: PixelopusGenre: Adventure

Reasons to buy

+Heartfelt story+Beautifully stylised+Creative and imaginative

Concrete Genie offers an enchanting, creatively unique experience using the DualShock 4’s motion sensor controls to paint. Yep, that’s right, you create beautiful artwork by tilting your controller in different directions. While it sounds like a bit of an unconventional way to compose art, it actually works really well. Pixelopus offers a deeply heartwarming adventure that explores the impact of an environmental disaster on a now abandoned seaside town. You play a young bullied teenager called Ash who discovers a magical paintbrush that has the power to restore the town and bring his artwork to life. The story also touches on the issue of bullying with sensitivity, and it also shows you a different side to the bullies that you might not expect to see.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Yakuza 6

18. Yakuza 6

The other great crime sim on PS4

Specifications

Release Date: 2018Developer: SegaGenre: Action RPG

Reasons to buy

+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Fully localised for the US and UK+Massive game, so great value

If you’ve never experienced the PS4 exclusive Yakuza series… what the hell have you been doing with your gaming life? It’s time to rectify that mistake with the latest Yakuza. No, really, the sixth core outing for the series is actually one of the best places to start as it does a great job of telling the story so far, while offering the best action and elements from previous games in one, meaty adventure. It’s essentially an action-RPG set in Japan, where you play as ex-Yakuza boss Kazuma Kiryu, who is now a good guy fighting for his adopted children and the people of his town. There are mini-game distractions galore, loads of wonderful side-stories to experience, and a gripping overall narrative.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Street Fighter 5

17. Street Fighter 5

The fighting legend finds a home on PS4

Specifications

Release Date: 2016Developer: CapcomGenre: Fighting

Reasons to buy

+Massive list of characters+Also available on PC+Compatible with fightsticks

It might’ve launched in relatively rough shape, but after over a year of additional content, new characters, and countless refinements, Street Fighter 5 (opens in new tab) has realized its full potential as a phenomenal fighting game. Its ever-growing roster of unique characters has the perfect fit for any playstyle, and the inventive V-Skill and V-Trigger systems add another layer of excitement and strategic depth to each intense match. Whether you go with an old favorite like Ryu or opt for an oddball newcomer like Necalli, Street Fighter 5 delivers more of the infinite replayability and limitless skill ceiling you’ve come to expect from Capcom’s fan-favorite fighting game series.

Best PS4 exclusive games - inFamous: Second Son

16. inFamous: Second Son

A superhero adventure that’s not to be missed

Specifications

Release Date: 2014Developer: Sucker PunchGenre: Action adventure

Reasons to buy

+Brilliant superhero action+Great use of the DualShock 4+Top notch graphics, despite it’s PS4 launch date release

Reasons to avoid

-Empty List

Despite the fact it was one of the original PS4 launch games, inFamous: Second Son is a wonderful example of how technical tweaks for the PS4 Pro release can change the quality of a game dramatically. Sucker Punch’s brilliant smoke-fuelled superhero story looks fantastic even four years after release, and its tale of origins, family, and brotherhood is still one of my favourite PS4 games to date. It make Seattle your playground, and nothing feels quite as good as chaining together attacks with your newly found powers to stop the big bad that’s threatening your town, and your family. Utterly brilliant.

Best PS4 exclusive games - The Last of Us Remastered

15. The Last of Us Remastered

The best game story ever told

Specifications

Release Date: 2014Developer: Naughty DogGenre: Action adventure

Reasons to buy

+One of the best game storylines of all time+Looks fantastic on Pro+Epic stealth sections

Reasons to avoid

-Empty List

Okay, okay, so technically The Last of Us was one of the best PS3 games (opens in new tab), but it’s tricky to compile a list of the best PS4 exclusives without at least mentioning this fantastic remaster. Not only do you get the original The Last of Us game in glorious 4K if you’re rocking a PS4 Pro, but you also get a load of additional content bundled in as well. Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic tale is still one of the best video game stories (opens in new tab) ever told. So if you’ve not experienced Ellie and Joel’s tale yet, settle back (although not too far, this is a tense game with mutants in it), and immerse yourself in one of the best games of all time.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Tearaway Unfolded

14. Tearaway Unfolded

A papercraft adventure where you’re the star

Specifications

Release Date: 2015Developer: Media MoleculeGenre: Platformer adventure

Reasons to buy

+Best use of the DualShock 4’s unique feature+Adorable papercraft world+Puts you right in the game

Reasons to avoid

-Empty List

Tearaway Unfolded is one of those rare games that is a sheer delight from start to finish. Its beautiful paper craft world is one that you’re immersed in from the get go, using the touchpad on the DualShock 4 to draw and craft your own creations that get placed inside the game. And, the more you play, the more the world of Tearaway Unfolded becomes a reflection of your artistic talents. Trust me, you don’t need many, thank the PlayStation Gods, but even a shambled together star adds some pizzazz to this already stunning world. Of course, there’s a story here too – it’s not all scissors and glue work – and it’s up to you to help rid the world of the evil Scraps and restore order once and for all. Meet some adorable creatures along the way, make friends, earn yourself some sticks and poke and prod the world using the power of the DualShock 4, and more in this unique PS4 exclusive adventure.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Ratchet and Clank

13. Ratchet and Clank

A wonderful remaster of the PS2 classic

Specifications

Release Date: 2016Developer: Insomniac GamesGenre: Action adventure

Reasons to buy

+An animated space odyssey+Brilliantly silly weapons and story+A PS2 classic brought into the present day

Reasons to avoid

-Empty List

If you played Ratchet and Clank back in the days of the PS2, you know how amazing the duo’s adventures are. This oddity of a space odyssey will have you chuckling at the ridiculousness of the guns, groaning at the brilliantly awful jokes, and dazzling at the stunning world that Insomniac Games has created, with a colour palette to make any galaxy jealous. This is absolutely the magic of the original brought onto the PS4 in a beautiful remaster that proves that games don’t need to be totally overhauled to be brought onto current gen consoles. This is fun, imaginative and utterly wonderful.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

12. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

The female-led Uncharted that you absolutely have to play

Specifications

Release Date: 2017Developer: Naughty DogGenre: Action adventure

Reasons to buy

+Incredibly compelling fresh protagonists+Storyline is one of the best in the series+Absolutely stunning visuals

Reasons to avoid

-Empty List

While Nathan Drake has been the face of the Uncharted series since it debuted in 2007 on the PS3, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (opens in new tab) is all about giving someone else a turn. Drake moves aside to let two female characters from the series – both former villains/double crossers, I might add – in the form of Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross. The two women are a compelling double act that still retain the feisty, tongue-in-cheek antics that’s synonymous with the Uncharted series, but with a fresh take on the boisterous bromance of Sully and Drake. Brilliant set pieces, top notch puzzles, and a touch of the supernatural all add up to make this an Uncharted spin-off that could just be the start of a new Uncharted tale.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Shadow of the Colossus

11. Shadow of the Colossus

Epic monsters on an epic console

Specifications

Release Date: 2018Developer: Team IcoGenre: Action adventure

Reasons to buy

+Atmospheric and intriguing world building+Cinematic and thrilling boss battles+Monsters look fantastic

Reasons to avoid

-Empty List

Shadow of the Colossus (opens in new tab) is one of those games that everyone wanted to be remastered for years upon years. And then it happened. Announced at E3 2017, but arrived in February 2018, this is the kind of game that makes huge ripples in the gaming industry, because it still felt as thought-provoking and artistic as it did when it originally released some 13 years earlier on the PS2. This is a genuine slice of gaming history, and you owe it to yourself to experience it.

You’ll be thankful for every minute you spend in the beautiful, full, and surprisingly chill world of Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch’s latest takes an Assassin’s Creed-style Japan, adds a Red Dead Redemption 2-sized world, and blends in an entire library’s worth of Akira Kurosawa movies to create this tribute to the Japanese culture is so clearly reveres. This is a fantastic swan song for the PS4.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Detroit: Become Human

09. Detroit: Become Human

One of the smartest narrative games ever made

Specifications

Release Date: 2018Developer: Quantic DreamGenre: Adventure

Reasons to buy

+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+So many endings to see+Looks incredible

The latest game to join this exclusive club, Detroit: Become Human is a tour de force of storytelling. It follows the story of three Androids, who all break their programming to become ‘free’ in the year 2038. As well as looking insanely pretty, this game does some interesting things with player choice – not only do you genuinely feel in control of the destiny of each character, but you’re also made aware of the different story paths you could have taken at the end of each level. It’s light on action, but heavy on talking, but that’s the point here. Once you invest in the various characters, and their struggles, you’ll be hooked… and you’ll genuinely fret over some of the game’s tougher moral choices.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Persona 5

08. Persona 5

One of the finest JRPGs around

Specifications

Release Date: 2016Developer: AtlusGenre: JRPG

Reasons to buy

+A classic JRPG+Masses of depth+Looks amazing

Playing Persona 5 (opens in new tab) borders on overstimulation due to its sheer sense of style, where everything from the colorful visuals and snazzy soundtrack to the vibrant menus and peppy voice acting is vying for your rapt attention. This accessible-yet-deep JRPG is like a playable anime, following a group of Japanese high schoolers who become empowered as the Phantom Thieves, bettering society by stealing the coveted items corrupting the hearts of delusional adults. Whether you’re infiltrating the psychological palaces of your chosen target or simply hanging out and building friendships via a wide variety of after-school activities, Persona 5 offers over 100 hours of joy to anyone with even the slightest affinity for JRPG adventures. And yes, you can technically play it on PS3 – but then you’d be missing out on that sweet, sweet 1080p resolution.

Best PS4 exclusive games - The Last Guardian

07. The Last Guardian

A sweeping epic that began life on PS3

Specifications

Release Date: 2016Developer: SonyGenre: Adventure

Reasons to buy

+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Prequel to Shadow of the Colossus+Unique story

Fumito Ueda’s games are renowned for the way they stir the player’s emotions and sense of wonderment, and after years of waiting and wondering if it would ever see the light of day, The Last Guardian (opens in new tab) lives up to the same high standard as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. You play as a young boy marooned among ancient ruins, befriending a humongous bird/dog hybrid named Trico as the two of you make your way towards freedom. Trico’s unique, at times disobedient, AI makes him feel like a truly living creature you need to coax and cooperate with in order to solve a variety of third-person puzzles, creating a bond between player and animal that’s not unlike the companionship of a real-world pet.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

06. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Nathan Drake’s latest and greatest

Specifications

Release Date: 2016Developer: Naughty DogGenre: Adventure

Reasons to buy

+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Incredible looking game+Cracking multiplayer options

Like all the greatest action movies, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (opens in new tab) knows when to balance explosive set-pieces and riveting car chases with quieter moments of human drama and warmth. Nathan Drake’s still a lovable modern-day Indiana Jones, hunting for treasure and evading armed goons with panache, but watching him interact with his loved ones – Elena, Sully, and even his newly introduced brother Sam, all brought to life via fantastic mocapped performances – is more rewarding than the discovery of any ancient secret. Uncharted 4 is a fitting end for Nathan’s story, and playing it feels like completing the satisfying final chapter in a beloved adventure book that’s made an indelible mark on your heart.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Bloodborne

05. Bloodborne

From the creators of the Dark Souls series

Specifications

Release Date: 2015Developer: FromSoftwareGenre: Action RPG

Reasons to buy

+Super hardcore game+Amazing gothic atmosphere+Going cheap in 2018

The night is dark and full of terrors, the majority of which will mercilessly kill you in seconds if you’re not careful. But that’s a risk you’ll just have to take to explore and experience Bloodborne (opens in new tab)‘s gorgeous gothic city of Yharnam, the setting for From Software’s brilliant spin-off that experiments with the studio’s own Dark Souls designs. This elegant third-person action RPG opts for a quicker pace of play compared to classic Souls without devaluing the need for constant caution and alertness, lest you fall prey to a diverse range of horrific monsters lurking through the Victorian-era environments. The dual forms of each melee weapon, mixed with the careful timing of pistol-enabled parries, gives you even more room to express your preferred fighting style as you claw your way from one memorable boss encounter or picturesque vista to the next, guided (or hostilely invaded) by the ghosts of other players.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Marvel's Spider-Man

04. Marvel’s Spider-Man

The greatest superhero game of the generation

Reasons to buy

+Movement is incredible+Looks amazing+Loads to do

Reasons to avoid

-Empty List

Easily the best superhero game of recent years, Spider-Man is an absolute storming exclusive for PS4. It looks incredible, is stuffed full of things to see and do, and it feels glorious to play. From the moment you take your first swing around NYC, to the later stages when you’re mixing together movement, combat, and powers this is an absolute delight to just sit and play. The story is gripping, funny, and genuinely surprising in places, and the presentation is slick as hell. It very much captures the spirit of both the comics and the new Marvel versions of Spidey. If you’re looking for something brand new, which will wow your friends and keep you playing for weeks and weeks… this is the one for you.

Best PS4 exclusive games - Horizon Zero Dawn

03. Horizon Zero Dawn

An incredible open-world adventure

Specifications

Release Date: 2017Developer: Guerrilla GamesGenre: Adventure

Reasons to buy

+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Beautiful photo mode+A massive adventure

We’ve seen far too many desolate, lifeless, post-apocalyptic wastelands in games, to the point where they’ve become as dreary as the crumbling world they portray. But Horizon Zero Dawn (opens in new tab) dares to push far, far beyond the fall of modern society to give us a glimpse at a new chapter for humanity, where primitive tribes have slowly begun to rebuild among unique species of sentient, robotic wildlife that roam and own the now-verdant ruins of metropolitan areas. You explore Horizon’s expansive, enchanting open world as Aloy, an instantly likeable lead who’s a capable and courageous hunter in this far-future frontier. Establishing diplomatic relations with other human tribes, exploring the breathtaking environment (and capturing Kodak moments with the delightful photo mode (opens in new tab)), hunting down every last secret tucked away in the sprawling landscape, trying to bag yourself a massive dino-like Thunderjaw – whatever you set out to do in Horizon Zero Dawn, it’s going to be incredible.

Best PS4 exclusive games - God of War

02. God of War

The best action PS4 title

Specifications

Release Date: 2018Developer: Sony Santa MonicaGenre: Adventure

Reasons to buy

+Enhanced for PS4 Pro+Looks incredible+A brilliant, action-filled story

Yes, it’s that good. The latest God of War, which essentially reboots the franchise and takes it to a whole new setting, is the best game you can play on PS4. And that’s something we may well be saying until PS5 inevitably rolls out. Ditching the linear action structure of the originals, this outing lets you explore a fully realised, utterly beautiful Norse world, picking fights and solving puzzles as you go. The story is both well written and well paced, with Kratos far more than a one-dimensional murder-machine now. Enemies are well constructed too, and the combat is just as fluid and thrilling as it always was. There are heaps of things to discover, and each new area is more jaw-dropping and feature-packed than the next. Only Horizon comes close to showing the power and versatility of the PlayStation in the same way, making God of War an essential purchase for anyone with a Dualshock in their hands and a hankering for a fresh experience.

Reasons to buy

+Powerful storytelling+Fierce, brutal combat+Ingenious level design

Naughty Dog has closed out the PS4 generation with its most ambitious game to date. Not only does this exclusive justify its existence as the sequel none of us thought we needed, but it’s an outstanding achievement in its own right. Visually astonishing, absurdly ambitious, and utterly epic in scale, The Last of Us Part 2 (opens in new tab) is a game that will be a part of you for many, many years to come.

The God of War Valkyries are up there with the most fearsome enemies you’ll encounter, and they provide no less than eight separate boss fights where you need to take down these winged foes. If you can find and beat them, you can claim the impressive treasures protected by the Norse warrior angels, but believe us when we say this is no cakewalk. To defeat all of them, including the ferocious Valkyrie Queen, you must demonstrate impressive skill backed up with preparation, as well as solid knowledge of the game world itself – because each of the God of War Valkyries are hidden away, and until the storyline provides you with a magic chisel you won’t be able to find or fight them in God of War.

Killing all eight of them is how to get the God of War Valkyrie armor, which is one of the game’s most powerful gear sets, and a perfect challenge to prepare players for the upcoming God of War Ragnarok. Here’s where to find, and how to beat, all of the God of War Valkyries.

Check out our video below for how to beat the God of War Valkyries:

Because these Valkyrie’s are seriously aggressive divas, I’d also recommend waiting until you’re at least level 6 before even attempting to take one on. They love crushing necks and bones and don’t take any prisoners. But, they’re seriously worth it because the armour you get is rather impressive, gives you low perk activations to refill your Runic Attack cooldowns, prevent attack interruptions, and basically makes you as badass as a Valkyrie. Without the wings. Sigh.

How to find all eight Valkyries in God of War

  1. There are four Valkyries in Midgard: one in Wildwoods near your home; one in the River Pass; another in the Foothills; and the last in the Mountain.
  2. The one in Muspelheim is the level 6 challenge
  3. There’s another hidden deep within the Niflheim maze.
  4. Alfheim is home to one.
  5. There’s another hiding in Helheim.

How to beat the God of War Valkyries

Valkyries in God of War

But more importantly, you’re going to want to know how to beat the little buggers, because they’re not easy. It isn’t impossible though, and thankfully all eight of the Valkyries share attack styles and movements, just with varying elemental types, so you can learn how to beat them all. So here are 8 tips for beating the Valkyries in God of War:

1. Patience is key

As tempting as it might be to go all in with your blades and your axe every time a Valkyrie comes anywhere near you, doing that is a quick way to death. It’s better to bide your time, watch for patterns and only attack when they’re taking a few, short, seconds to recover.

2. Use Atreus for airborne, red ring attacks

Valkyries God of War

Every Valkyrie has a nasty habit of flying up into the air and unleashing a devastating light ring attack, or shrouding the whole arena with a thick grey fog. But although it might seem like both of these attacks spell the end of the fight – or at least a great portion of your health bar – you can actually interrupt the attacks using your favourite offspring Atreus. Hit square whenever they’re airborne and he’ll bring them down a peg or two, and save you from a devastating attack. Also, don’t forget Atreus’ Runic attack can come in very handy too.

3. Keep your shield up for most attacks

A Valkyrie’s power is mostly in her wings, which are tipped with dagger-like feathers that will cause serious damage to any unarmed thing in the way, even the God of War himself. But, thankfully, not his shield. It’s easiest to keep your shield up 99% of the time during a Valkyrie tangle. You’ll be protected against spinning wings, feather darts, staff smacks, and other aggressions as long as you’re hiding behind that shield.

4. Don’t forget your resurrection stones

God of War Resurrection Stones

It goes without saying really, but when you first start fighting the Valkyries your health can go down incredibly fast if you miss a dodge here, or a Valhalla slam there. So before you decide to fight one, make a trip to see Brok or Sindri and nab yourself a Resurrection stone. I’d recommend the Superior Resurrection stone, as it gives you a nice burst of health upon resuscitation, whereas the Berserker’s is much more risky as gives you no health but refills your rage. Trust me, you’ll value that extra health.

5. Dodge red and gold attacks as much as possible

The majority of red and gold attacks, unless they can be stopped by Atreus, will need to be dodged. That’s especially true of the flying dive, which will literally smash your face into the ground if you don’t. Other attacks like the staff-based ones, will give you a moment of dodge time beforehand. Just don’t forget to use it.

6. If you hear them scream “Valhalla”, start rolling

God of War Valkyrie

Although you don’t really want to be on the receiving end of any Valkyrie attack, there’s one that really packs a health-draining punch. It involves some neck stamping and bone crunching and will leave you begging for a health stone. But helpfully a Valkyrie will scream “Valhalla” before they pounce, so if you hear that word, dear god you better roll.

And most of them will chain a couple of Valhalla slams together, so don’t dodge just the once.

7. Keep locked on at all times

Valkyries are speedy devils, so to cut yourself some slack and make sure you’re ready for every incoming attack by hitting R3 to lock on to the enemy. It might seem like a simple trick, but it’s saved me more than once.

8. Attack as soon as you can

Valkyries are basically just waiting for you in their various chambers, so as soon as they even start opening their wings hit them with the big hitter attacks and steal a chunk of their health before the… umm… party even gets started.

How to beat the Queen of the Valkyries in God of War

Queen of the Valkyries in God of War

Once you’ve done all of that and finally feel like you’ve got room to breathe, you’re presented with one last challenge – beating the Queen of the Valkyries. Thankfully, she doesn’t have any attacks that you won’t be prepared for. Beating her is just a case of ultimate patience, as she has all the attacks of her Valkyrie horde combined and about quadruple the health. Good luck, and get ready to claim that reward.

Nornir Chests

To open a Nornir chest, you need to find the three runes that seal it, which normally involves smashing things or solving puzzles. It’s well worth the effort, as they contain the only items that can increase your maximum health and rage, so if you want to find and open them all then follow our God of War Nornir chests guide.

Valkyries

We won’t go too far into Spoiler Town here, but once you reach the God of War end-game content you’ll find yourself battling against a series of Valkyries. If you’re looking for help with defeating them, here’s our tips for how to beat the God of War Valkyries.

If you’ve ever wondered what 2018’s God of War might’ve looked like had it launched on PS1, this incredibly well-made demake is your answer.

64 Bits’ latest demake reimagines God of War as a turn-based RPG from 1998, using Breath of Fire 4 as the template. Like most demakes, you can’t actually play this one, but the above video shows the title screen, loading screen, and some cinematic and gameplay footage. You can see Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir having a brief conversation on their boat before docking and being greeted by a draugr, nightmare, and ogre. The ensuing battle has all the hallmarks of a classic RPG, giving everyone a numbered health bar and showing each attack’s hit points. Atreus even performs a highly theatrical special attack with his bow that takes out the ogre and ends the fight.

The whole thing is really well-made, especially the pared down score and classic PlayStation sounds, which do well to set the eerie mood of the scene. But don’t just take it from us! The demake has the official seal of approval from God of War director Cory Barlog, who shared some love for the project over on Twitter.

There’s been a trend of rewinding the clock on popular PlayStation games as of late. We think this demake of The Last of Us channels Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill, while this Resident Evil Village demake might even be creepier than the actual PS5 game. There’s also a Bloodborne demake that you’ll actually be able to play next month – check out our chat with its developer for more on that.

Getting back to the present, here are the best PS5 games to play right now.

An animator on 2018’s God of War has revealed a curious – intimate, even – little detail about everyone’s favorite tatted deity and his favorite tool: Kratos’ axe gets about 20% bigger when it’s in his hand, and we are all full-grown adults who find nothing funny about that at all.

Seriously though, now that I’ve satisfied my need to make stupid jokes at even the weakest opportunity, this is a cool insight into how game developers tweak the rules of their worlds to be more appealing to the eye. PlayStation Studios animator Robert Morrison took to Twitter to share what he almost certainly never expected to be twisted for our perverted amusement.

Fun lil dev fact. Kratos’ axe is a different scale when it’s in his hand than when it’s on his back. 🤓 https://t.co/5jm3T5eRnlAugust 20, 2021

In a private message, Morrison explained to me that developers use tricks like these “usually to give the best visual presentation for any given camera view or scenario. Helps to ‘frame the shot’ if you will.” It’s possible that other assets in the game were tweaked in a similar way for perspective, like Kratos’ blades for example, but Morrison isn’t 100% sure.

Hopefully, Morrison and other devs continue sharing similar secrets, but I’m afraid we might’ve squandered the privilege after this little stunt.

Correction: This article has been updated to reflect that Morrison doesn’t “recall any scaling (changing of size)” of Mimir’s head. We regret the error.

A leaker with a largely solid track record claims that a crop of prominent PlayStation exclusives are headed to PC in the near future.

In its first post in just over half a year, the CrazyLeaksOnATrain Twitter account jumped right back into the thick of things to claim that Bloodborne, an Uncharted collection (presumably Uncharted: The Nathan Drake collection, a remastered bundle of the series’ three PS3 games), Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War are headed to PC.

The account has claimed several times in the past that a Bloodborne PC version is on the way. While good hunters are still waiting on that to be officially confirmed, the account correctly predicted the Epic Games Store exclusive debut of Kingdom Hearts on PC, the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy remaster, and Nioh 2 getting a PC port (though their predicted release date was a few months off), among others.

While any of this would have been tough to believe a few years ago, the arrival of former PS4 exclusives Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn on PC makes this rumored slate of games seem much closer to the realm of possibility. It would be the first time either God of War or Uncharted, both pillars of PlayStation exclusivity for more than a decade, had major releases come to an external platform.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan confirmed last month that “a whole slate” of PlayStation games are headed to PC, starting with Days Gone some time this spring. If that slate includes the leaked lineup of games, PC players have a lot to look forward to.

It would seem as though God of War 3 Remastered, God of War (2018), and Final Fantasy 7 Remake have all been updated with PS5-related support.

The new information comes by way of famed Bloodborne and Dark Souls dataminer Lance McDonald. According to McDonald, all three games have been updated to feature PS5 support in some capacity, but McDonald doesn’t know in what ways each game has been updated, at least until he’s able to do some digging and find out for himself.

Ok I can confirm that God of War 3 Remastered, God of War (2018) and Final Fantasy 7 Remake have now been updated with some amount of added PS5 support. However, there’s no way to know what amount of “support” this actually is until we get hands-on.October 23, 2020

In a reply to the original tweet above, a user wonders if any of the three games will be able to hit 60 frames per second on the PS5. McDonald replies that because 2018’s God of War features an uncapped frame rate if you’re able to hack the game, it’s incredibly likely that Sony Santa Monica’s reboot will be able to hit 60FPS on the PS5.

Elsewhere though, we have no idea what features could theoretically be in store for God of War 3: Remastered and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It’d be amazing to see Square Enix’s remake running in 60FPS on the PS5, but we’ll have to wait for little under a month from now to find out for ourselves, when the PS5 launches on November 12.

If you’re unfamiliar with McDonald’s work, he’s risen to fame largely through datamining and patching Bloodborne. His most recent work managed to introduce a 60FPS patch for Bloodborne, a patch that McDonald says he plans to make available after the launch of the PS5 later this year.

Speaking of, if you’re still looking to put down a pre-order for Sony’s next-gen console ahead of its launch next month on November 10, head over to our PS5 pre-orders page for a complete list of retailers with stock.

It’s the latest trickle of evidence that suggests the studio is working on a sequel. Last year, it posted job listings (opens in new tab) recruiting for a senior combat animator with a “knowledge of God of War (2018).”

There was also a role for a “Facial Blend Shape Character Artist” that also mentioned knowledge of next-gen, suggesting that Sony Santa Monica is in fact working on a sequel to God of War which will land on the PS5. A next-gen title makes total sense when you consider Sony’s next-gen console is slated to release at the end of this year, although should be noted that certain job listings (opens in new tab) on their careers site specifically mention working on PS4, so there’s a chance we could get another adventure on Sony’s current console.

A short while after, as GamesRadar+ reported (opens in new tab), more job postings were advertised that appeared to hint at where the next God of War game could take place. Interestingly, the postings were looking for an assistant cinematic director and a cinematic artist who had experience in “martial arts and dance.” This requirement could be taken in a number of ways, but suggests the next God of War could take place in Eastern Asia.

Nothing official has been revealed about our reunion with Kratos, but outside of the job listings, there have been plenty of hints and rumours circulating about the sequel. Early last year, an interesting God of War PS4 theme (opens in new tab) also hinted where the series could be heading. The theme saw Kratos and Atreus in a boat with Nordic Runes etched on the side that translates to “Ragnarok is coming,” which could spell that the sequel will go in the direction of the Norse apocalypse.

Of course, Sony Santa Monica might be working on an entirely new thing, which is an exciting thing in and of itself. With more evidence mounting that production is picking up pace on whatever their next project is, we can’t wait to see more.

In other news, be sure to check out this stunning Mimir animatronic that brings God of War’s know-it-all into our realm (opens in new tab)

You’re making your way through the gaming world of your choice, and suddenly hear an overenthusiastic war cry. Turning around, there’s a handful of those generic enemies sprinting towards you with some obviously lethal intentions: they could be bandits, soldiers, roving post-apocalyptic fiends, or just some hostile bipedal humanoids – but chances are that no matter the game, they’re a mixture of both men and women. It wasn’t so long ago that these generic, nameless baddies were simply men, yet this switch to include women among their ranks is one of the most important patterns in gaming. Because – in a revelation that won’t shock any of you, I’m sure – some girls can be evil too.

However perverted this might sound, being able to fight off bloodthirsty women as well as men makes me so god damn happy. Whether these nameless, cookie-cutter foes are being used as meatbag distractions during a boss fight or are the kind that roam across an open world and are all too happy to open fire on you, having a mixture of men and women in their ranks is one step closer to equality between the sexes in video games, and helps to get rid of the damaging notion that women aren’t aggressors. Let me explain why.

Mixed-sex cannon-fodder

It might just sound like an aesthetic choice, a small tweak that you don’t really notice when you’re gaming. But having both men and women attack you slowly but surely erodes the idea that men are the default setting for generic enemies: that they’re nameless cannon fodder, disposable and meant to be killed without a second thought. However, great as it is to have major female NPCs, treating men and women the same when it comes to the lowest level of nameless-NPCs is just as important. This is far from a new trend, though: Skyrim (opens in new tab) has mixed-sex guards and bandits, Far Cry 5 (opens in new tab) has cultists and Highwaymen of both genders, the soldiers patrolling Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (opens in new tab)’s forts and cities are both male and female, and other games like Dishonored 2 (opens in new tab), all the Bioshock (opens in new tab) games, and Left 4 Dead (opens in new tab) have the same gender balance. Most recently Borderlands 3 (opens in new tab) joined the party by giving us female psychos (at last).

Bioshock's Baby Jane Splicer

Bioshock’s Baby Jane Splicer

Whichever way you look at it, it’s good to prove that like men, women can be dicks and join causes that belong to the baddies, as well as leading those hordes of evil ne’er-do-wells. Pretending otherwise is just putting women on a pedestal, implying that we’re without fault and couldn’t possibly contemplate hurting another living being. But even though most games already include lethal ladies, part of what is holding some titles back (and could have occurred to you too) might be that faint and outdated idea that you shouldn’t hit a girl, no matter what. And you shouldn’t, as a rule, but – and I hope this is so obvious that I don’t have to point it out – nor should you hit boys. But there is one big exception: if they seem thirsty for your blood, gender doesn’t really matter when it comes down to making sure your vital organs actually stay inside your body. It’s like that scene in 22 Jump Street, where Schmidt doesn’t want to hit Mercedes (opens in new tab), or Colossus’ initial reluctance to fight Angel Dust (opens in new tab) in Deadpool (opens in new tab)

One of God of War's Valkyries

Time to point out the obvious: if some girl is trying to whack your head in with a baseball bat, it’s alright to fight back. For whatever reason, for some fighting women who are pretty ok with fighting you seems to be one of those old weird chivalry rules that hasn’t quite gone away yet. I sincerely hope that if any of us were faced with Mickey and Lou from Far Cry New Dawn (opens in new tab), Doom (opens in new tab)’s Olivia Pierce, Irene Engel from Wolfenstein 2 (opens in new tab), God of War (opens in new tab)’s Valkyries, or Lady Butterfly from Sekiro (opens in new tab): Shadows Die Twice, we’d be ok with shedding some blood in the name of survival.

Monstrous mobs

This goes far beyond just low-level female and male mobs though, and into the depiction of monsters and the monstrous in video games. Although with some creatures it’s almost impossible to tell their gender due to their androgynous appearance – like Devil May Cry 5 (opens in new tab)’s Hell Atenora or Metro Exodus (opens in new tab)’ humanimals – other games seem to incline more towards having a majority of monsters with masculine physical qualities. Take Outlast (opens in new tab) and Outlast 2 (opens in new tab), for example. Even though the second game had horrific female enemies like Val and Marta, the Heretics that you fought near the end of the game are all men, as evidenced by their almost-naked bodies and, ahem, genitalia. Then Outlast only had male enemies, despite there being a female ward at Mount Massive Asylum.

One of Outlast's Variants

One of Outlast’s Variants

Helwalkers, Trolls, and Draugr in God of War all have male physical characteristics too (broad shoulders, slim hips), plus in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (opens in new tab) Lynels, as just one example, are all evidently buff lion centaur dudes. Depicting most monsters as having typically male qualities is limiting to say the least. Although they look cool as heck in a kind of horrifying way, monsters can and should have female characteristics too, like God of War’s Revenants or Left 4 Dead 2 (opens in new tab)’s Spitter and Witch special infected. By the way, those two examples also prove that women can be monstrous without using their gender as the reason for their monstrosity, which is unfortunately the category that enemies like Marguerite Baker from Resident Evil 7 (opens in new tab) fall into, with her twisted form seemingly relying on a twisted mockery of pregnancy (opens in new tab) to disgust us.

And yeah, I know my entire argument can be simplified into ‘let me kill more women in video games, dammit’, but I’m ok with that. You want to support a tyrant? A cult leader? You can, no matter what’s between your legs! Including women among those low-level mobs undermines the idea that women can’t be aggressors, and helps to combat the sexist idea that women can’t be violent. A notion like that harms both genders, and who knows, this could just be a small step towards men being treated as women’s equals in other bits of real life too. Since we’ve started to talk more about equality between the sexes it’s no coincidence that current trends indicate men are feeling more able to open up about being the victims of violence: reports of sexual offences against men having tripled in the last 10 years (opens in new tab), and reports of men being domestically abused have risen (opens in new tab) also. Having a balanced depiction of generic, evil men and women in video games might seem like a trivial point, but it’s small things like this that end up making it easier for all of us to be treated equally.

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t played God of War, do not read any further as I’m about to talk about one of the biggest spoilers of the game. Scroll below angry Kratos to read more…

2018’s God of War (opens in new tab) was a breakthrough for the series, completely reinventing the muscled demigod Kratos by having him work his way through fatherhood and toxic masculinity all while fighting the shadows of his past. One of the pivotal moments in the game is when Kratos returns home to unearth his Blades of Chaos, hidden below the floorboards you walked over right at the beginning of God of War. Bound to his skin with chains, they represent the life he’s tried to hard to leave behind and help Kratos fight enemies in Helheim to eventually get the ingredient that saves his son Atreus from his sickness. And those Blades, and the touching scene introducing them, were almost cut from the game. Yes, seriously.

Cory Barlog, Creative Director at Sony Santa Monica, revealed the stunning bit of news to Gamespot (opens in new tab), saying that “the payoff that we actually got [the Blades of Chaos] right, that was always in question. We didn’t do the blades until probably the last year [of development]. We worked on the [Leviathan] axe for so long that there was a possibility that the blades were going to have to get cut because they were just taking so long to get online that everybody said, ‘Look, it took three and a half to four years to do the axe, you’re never going to be able to do the blades in time’”. Thank Odin that wasn’t the case.

Cory continued, explaining that most of the difficulties with the Blades came from making their combat feel right. “We had a good year of animated chain moves that were just like, ‘That doesn’t feel right, that doesn’t work’”, he said, “and with this new camera angle where you have the camera behind [Kratos] it’s very different … You don’t get the same visual as when you have a side view of Kratos shooting the chain blades out. Seeing it from an isometric view, seeing it from a side view, you get a better view of the line of action. We really had to figure out how to take the old moves and make them work much better in this camera angle”. God of War’s third-person, behind-the-shouder view evidently meant that it was trickier to get a sweeping sense of the sheer power of the Blades, but the phenomenal team overcame those issues to bring gamers everywhere one of the most emotional scenes in the entire game. Excuse me, I’ve got something in my eye…
