Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will now let its hero cosplay as Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West, thanks to a surprise update.

Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch revealed the fun new addition, which comes along with other changes that aren’t quite so cross-promotional, on its official Twitter account. If you want to pick up the new techno-stone-age duds for Jin Sakai, you’ll need to head to the north of Iki Island and check out the new Forbidden Shrine. Solve the puzzle in that area and you’ll get your Aloy kit. And remember, you do specifically need Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut to get this new outfit, since otherwise you won’t be able to make your way to Iki Island in the first place.

We are so excited for Horizon Forbidden West from our friends at @Guerrilla! While we wait, today we’ve released a new patch for Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut that repairs a Wind Shrine to the north of Iki Island. Solve the puzzle there to earn an Aloy-inspired surprise… pic.twitter.com/5brcjTvL7oFebruary 8, 2022

The update also adds a new platinum difficulty level for survival mode in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, which is harder than gold (but without the weekly modifier schedule enforced in nightmare mode) while also offering increased rewards for your effort. Other tweaks in the patch include a new option to make it easier to add players to your PlayStation-wide blocklist and fix stuttering issues, with another patch focused on Legends expected to roll out in March.

We can only hope that more PlayStation heroes get the cospla-loy treatment in the leadup to Horizon: Forbidden West‘s arrival on February 18, 2022.

There’s a brand new Ghost of Tsushima: Iki Island armor set, the Sarugami Armor, for the new expansion, and it’s channeling something rather brilliant – the power of monkeys. Yes, you read that right, the legendary armor is allegedly cursed by Black Hand Riku, the pirate captain that originally wore it, and the vicious monkey that was always by his side. The armor is hidden away on Iki Island  in Ghost of Tsushima, but you’ll have a battle on your hand if you want to grab it.

However, it’s extremely worth it as Black Hand Riku’s armor, aka the Sarugami Armor, gives you some brilliant perks, even without any upgrades applied. It boosts your Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge abilities, allowing the Parry to let you chain attacks with it, and the Dodge to hurt other enemies around you. However, it does disable your regular Parry, so timing is everything.

This Mythic Tale is the one that you’ll need to look out for if you want to get your hands on the new Iki Island Sarugami armor. It won’t unlock until you’ve completed the main mission called A Raider’s Return, and unlocked the area known as Fuge’s Refuge.

This mission begins with a man talking about the mythical – and cursed – armor around a campfire. You’ll need to talk to him, listen to the tale of Black Hand Riku and what happened to him and his crew, and then begin your journey to track down the armor.

This first man – Kashira – tells you to track down another of Riku’s crew called Minato, who spends her time hiking Mount Takenotsuji. Track her down and you’ll need to save her from some of The Eagle’s Mongols, but in return she’ll tell you of the glowing water she saw the night Riku’s boat went down.

Rest at Minato’s camp, but then head eastwards to the coast. If you follow the guiding wind, you’ll be taken to the edge of the Thunderhead Cliffs, and if you peek down below you’ll be able to see the glowing waters down there. So head down and swim inland towards the cave.

Keep following the river, and eventually you’ll reach a secluded cave. You’ll need to work through the cave lighting braziers. Thankfully there are plenty of flaming arrows to collect as you go, as there are quite a few braziers to hit if you want to see anything you’re doing.

Once you reach the end though, you’ll reach an area with a large pool of that glowing water from before. It’s here that you’ll have to fight Black Hand Riku – or at least what he called the “reborn” version – in order to snag his armor.

As part of the set, you’ll get the Sarugami Armor and Sarugami Helmet, which can be upgraded three times, as with other armors.

Here are the benefits of each level:

Level 1
– Regular Parry is disabled, Perfect Parry becomes a chain of two attacks, and Perfect Dodge also damages nearby enemies
– All Resolve gains are increased by a small amount
– Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge Windows are increased by a small amount

Level 2
– Regular Parry is disabled, Perfect Parry becomes a chain of three attacks, and Perfect Dodge also damages nearby enemies
– All Resolve gains are increased by a moderate amount
– Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge Windows are increased by a moderate amount

Level 3
– Regular Parry is disabled, Perfect Parry becomes a chain of three attacks, and Perfect Dodge also damages nearby enemies
– All Resolve gains are increased by a major amount
– Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge Windows are increased by a major amount

Level 4
– Regular Parry is disabled, Perfect Parry becomes a chain of three attacks, and Perfect Dodge also becomes an attack that binds enemies
– All Resolve gains are increased by a massive amount
– Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge Windows are increased by a massive amount

The more you upgrade the armor, the more the monkey-infused elements are brought to the fore too – including the helmet gaining monkey ears and a huge monkey sat on the top!

However, do beware that the moment you step out of the cave wearing the armor, Riku’s old crew will try to take it from you. A great opportunity to try out the new associated skills.

PlayStation images of a DualSense controller and Ghost of Tsushima have been discovered in the Netflix app by a dataminer.

Dataminer Steve Moser (opens in new tab) claims that they’ve found several traces of Netflix’s ‘N Game’ project in the streaming service app’s data and that it has the working title of ‘shark.’ Moser shared in a tweet that they’ve also found images of a DualSense controller and Ghost of Tsushima, hinting towards some kind of Sony partnership with the service.

Netflix’s gaming feature has a current working name of “Shark” and is represented by this image in their iOS app: a shark fin. Earlier this week it was revealed that Netflix is reportedly expanding into the games market within the next year. According to a Bloomberg (opens in new tab) report, Netflix is looking to offer video games through the streaming service as soon as 2022. The streaming service has already dabbled in gamified media in the form of the interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which played like a choice-based game and altered its plot as viewers selected various dialogue options.

It was also rumored in May of last year that the media giant was expanding into video games where a spokesperson for the company told GamesRadar+ that they were “excited to do more with interactive entertainment” after it was revealed that Netflix had approached several veteran games industry executives to help guide the company’s move into the video game sphere.

As for why Ghost of Tsushima is important, well it was revealed earlier this year that there is currently a Ghost of Tsushima movie in development with John Wick director Chad Stahelski, which may now be heading to Netflix.

It wouldn’t be the first time that Netflix has dipped its toes into the video game industry either, as it has worked with video game studios before to release the likes of a Stranger Things – arguably one of the service’s most popular shows – video game and worked with Dead By Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive to introduce a Stranger Things themed DLC pack to the game. Not to mention another crossover that saw main characters Eleven and Hopper join the free-to-play MOBA Smite

As for Sony’s relationship with Netflix, the two companies have already secured a deal which sees many of Sony’s blockbusters, including the upcoming Uncharted movie which is based on the PlayStation exclusive game of the same name, and Venom 2, heading to the streaming service exclusively after its time in cinemas.

Getting the best Ghost of Tsushima (opens in new tab) price is going to be critical for those that fancy jumping into the PS4’s swansong first-party game now that the Director’s Cut has been announced. Actually, even without the Director’s Cut, the game still plays fantastically on PS4 and PS5 and is well worth a look. Either way, we’ve rounded up all the best Ghost of Tsushima prices and deals going.

I’ll leave you to read our Ghost of Tsushima review (opens in new tab) in full but, as Rachel says, it really is a fitting swansong for the PS4 generation. Created by Sucker Punch, the team behind inFamous and Sly Cooper, this new open-world adventure takes place in feudal Japan and tasks you with holding off hordes of Mongol invaders. Doing so won’t be easy, either; you’ll need to learn “the way of the Ghost” to get the upper hand in what looks to be a drop-dead gorgeous battle for survival.

The Collector’s and Special Editions of the PS4 version may be harder to find nowadays, but they are still out there. Somewhere. And that Director’s Cut really is going to be a great entry point and returning point for players. We’ve rounded up the latest prices and deal for all of them.

And while you wait for your copy to arrive, perhaps you can spend some time swotting up and preparing with our Ghost of Tsushima guide (opens in new tab), which includes a great place to start: the best Ghost of Tsushima tips (opens in new tab).

Ghost of Tsushima prices – Director’s Cut

Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut

When it arrives on August 20 this year – a matter of weeks away! – the Director’s Cut will easily be the best place for newcomers to jump into Ghost of Tsushima. Featuring a brand new Iki Island expansion and access to a whole host of PS5 features the Director’s Cut is the fullest and most bombastic experience of Ghost of Tsushima that will be available.

If you want to consider the lowest cost method to get the Director’s Cut if you already own a copy of the game, then that upgrade, on either platform, will incur a smaller cost:

– From PS4 Director’s Cut to PS5 Director’s Cut will be $9.99.
– From standard PS4 Ghost of Tsushima to PS5 Director’s Cut will be $29.99.

Ghost of Tsushima prices and deals – Standard Edition

Get Ghost of Tsushima in its most straightforward form with the standard edition. Lovely. And remember, if you can find a cheap copy of the PS4 version, you may end up being able to get it, and the upgrade cost for lower than a PS5 Director’s Cut version too! Might be worth considering that to save some beans.

Ghost of Tsushima prices and deals – Special Edition

Ghost of Tsushima Special Edition price

A Special Edition has arrived, too, and includes a Steelbook version of the game, case plus a voucher for an in-game skin for a Hero of Tsushima mask and sword skin, a Charm of Hachiman’s Favor, one technique point, the Director’s Commentary, and a digital copy of the mini-version of the artbook. Nice.

Note: now we’re long after launch, finding this edition is increasingly difficult, and prices are wildly varying when it does crop up. The below links go to the right pages though.

Ghost of Tsushima prices and deals – Collector’s Edition

Ghost of Tsushima Collector's Edition prices

The pick of the Ghost of Tsushima edition bunch is definitely the Collector’s Edition. This features an already-iconic mask that’s a replica of the in-game item. It comes on an individually numbered stand so you know it’s yours alone. As well as that headline act, you’ll get a sashimono (war banner) that’s nearly four and half feet long, and a traditional-style furoshiki (wrapping cloth). You’ll also get a copy of the game with the steelbook case, a physical 48-page mini art book, and a full-world, printed-on-cloth map. This consists of a digital copy of the art book, the director’s commentary, the Charm of Hachiman’s Favor, a Samurai PS4 theme, and the Hero of Tsushima skin set. That. Is a lot of goodies. Note: stock is fluctuating wildly of this edition, too, so you’ll have to act fast, be patient, both, or be very lucky – the link below will get you to where you need to be nonetheless, however.

A new video compares the size of maps in games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, and more.

Just below, you can check out the complete comparison video Dimitris Galatus VFX on YouTube. The video provides an overhead perspective of a litany of in-game maps, starting out relatively small with Fortnite and Apex Legends at a few square kilometres apiece, before moving onto the behemoth maps of blockbusters like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

It’s a really neat creation, and helps put different in-game maps into perspective for the player. For example, we never really considered how truly vast the map in Far Cry 5 was, because there’s so many different ways to get around it via vehicles, but when you look at the actual physical size of the map in metres, it dwarfs other games.

Another video by the same YouTube channel gives a great look at how the Assassin’s Creed series has extended over the years. The Assassin’s Creed map size comparison video (opens in new tab) takes us through the complete series, starting out relatively small with Assassin’s Creed, and building through to the gigantic sizes of Odyssey, Valhalla, Black Flag, and more. It’s a great visual showcase of just how much Ubisoft’s series has extended, especially when switching to the RPG formula in recent years.

It’s definitely easier to see how games are getting bigger and bigger year upon year. Last year for example, a leak surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 revealed that the game’s map would be smaller, but more densely packed than that of The Witcher 3. This wasn’t received well by some players, who perceived Cyberpunk 2077’s smaller map to be offering less content compared to CD Projekt’s previous game. It’s easy to see, therefore, why developers might be inclined to make their games larger.

A leaker with a largely solid track record claims that a crop of prominent PlayStation exclusives are headed to PC in the near future.

In its first post in just over half a year, the CrazyLeaksOnATrain Twitter account jumped right back into the thick of things to claim that Bloodborne, an Uncharted collection (presumably Uncharted: The Nathan Drake collection, a remastered bundle of the series’ three PS3 games), Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War are headed to PC.

that slate of Sony games for pc will be funBloodborneuncharted collectionghost of Tsushimagod of warMarch 4, 2021

The account has claimed several times in the past that a Bloodborne PC version is on the way. While good hunters are still waiting on that to be officially confirmed, the account correctly predicted the Epic Games Store exclusive debut of Kingdom Hearts on PC, the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy remaster, and Nioh 2 getting a PC port (though their predicted release date was a few months off), among others.

While any of this would have been tough to believe a few years ago, the arrival of former PS4 exclusives Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn on PC makes this rumored slate of games seem much closer to the realm of possibility. It would be the first time either God of War or Uncharted, both pillars of PlayStation exclusivity for more than a decade, had major releases come to an external platform.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan confirmed last month that “a whole slate” of PlayStation games are headed to PC, starting with Days Gone some time this spring. If that slate includes the leaked lineup of games, PC players have a lot to look forward to.

A Sucker Punch job listing has surfaced which could be hinting at a potential Ghost of Tsushima sequel.

The job posting (opens in new tab) from Sucker Punch calls for a narrative writer to join its writing team to “help create engaging narrative content for our upcoming projects,” with a knowledge of writing character-driven stories within an “AAA open-world game”. What stands out the most, though, is that one of the job requirements lists “a desire to write stories set in feudal Japan”, with an added plus of “having a knowledge of feudal Japanese history.” Both seemingly hint that another Ghost of Tsushima project is in the works.

Ghost of Tsushima is set in feudal Japan in the late 13th century, so having a knowledge of the time period and a desire to write about it does appear to suggest it’s related. The list of tasks the narrative writer would be taking on and the mention of an open-world setting does also fall in line with the Ghost of the Tsushima. Of course, it could either be a direct sequel, or a new project set in the same world. While we have no way of knowing for certain just yet, it does seem quite safe to assume we’ll be seeing more Ghost of Tsushima in the future.

Developer Sucker Punch recently announced that Ghost of Tsushima will be playable at 60fps on the PS5 using the next-gen console’s Game Boost feature. The latest 1.1 update for the adventure also went live last week on October 16, bringing in New Game Plus and the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends online co-op mode. While you could already pet foxes, the update has the added bonus of giving you the blessing that is the ability to recruit dogs by petting them.

Jumping into the adventure yourself? Be sure to check out these helpful Ghost of Tsushima tips.

Sony has revealed some key metrics about Ghost of Tsushima (opens in new tab)‘s first 10 days since launch, and there’s only one stat that matters: foxes petted.

According to a tweet (opens in new tab) from PlayStation, there were 8.8 million wonderful little fox pets in the 10 days since Ghost of Tsushima released. And since it’s now been two weeks since launch, that number has likely climbed well upwards of 10 million. Give us an animal to pet, and you damn well better believe we’ll pet it.

In terms of other less-important activities, Ghost of Tsushima is generally being played a lot. Here’s a handy breakdown of player engagement:

  • 57.5 million duels
  • 810.3 years on horseback
  • 15.5 million photos taken
  • 6.4 million standoffs
  • 139.4 million enemies collapsed in fear
  • 16.2 million onsen visited
  • 28.1 million flute songs played
  • 14.2 million haikus written
  • 17.1 million bamboo strikes completed
  • 37.5 million Inari shrines honored

Maybe we’re petting foxes so much because we know it’s a gift Sucker Punch at one point didn’t plan on giving us. Talking to GamesRadar (opens in new tab) back in May, Ghost of Tsushima creative director Nate Fox (what are the odds?) revealed that one fateful gameplay feature made foxes pettable.

“Actually that was not always on the plan. We put in this business where the fox would guide you to shrines and the fox is lively, the fox is cute and people in Sucker Punch are demanding that they should be able to pet the fox. So you can pet the fox,” Fox said.

Ghost of Tsushima has been generally well-received overall, and recently (opens in new tab) drew high praise from Yakuza series director Toshihiro Nagoshi. “There are numerous things I bow my head to, like aiming at setting a game in that time period…I could go on and on,” Nagoshi said (as translated by Kotaku (opens in new tab)). “I feel an earnest sense of a job well done.”

Take a break from fox-petting and check out our round-up of the best standoffs in Ghost of Tsushima (opens in new tab).

The Ghost of Tsushima (opens in new tab) best standoffs are tense and exciting, and the player community have started sharing some heart-pounding highlights (as well as some humorous mishaps).

If you haven’t played yet, standoffs let you intentionally discard the element of surprise by challenging a group of enemies to single combat. From there the camera sets the stage with a dramatic letterbox effect, framing hero Jin Sakai as he faces off against a lone opponent: wait for just the right moment to strike and you can kill your foe with a single cut.

Standoffs are my favorite addition to the vocabulary of open-world action games since the air assassination, and players are working some true magic with standoffs. Note that some of these highlights show players who are quite far into the game, with upgraded skills and gear – if you’d rather encounter it all for yourself, beware of minor spoilers.

This standoff from Ryanicrude is just about perfect – from the foggy plains, to the swelling music, to the way Jin ends up perfectly silhouetted against the rising sun at the end.

My greatest cinematic stand off so far. (that UI tho D: ) from r/ghostoftsushima

This battle on a beach from almight_ultra ends with Jin outlined in bloody sand. I love the relentless pacing.

Samurai of Tsushima, Standoff from r/ghostoftsushima

This standoff from _herbert-earp_ flows straight into some nearly flawless standard combat. The camera swinging efficiently from one target to the next makes Jin feel like a merciless predator.

My greatest combat performance so far. Sorry for the low quality, PS4Share is not the greatest from r/ghostoftsushima

And then, because Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world game, there is the occasional standoff mishap. Like this video of the world’s most anticlimactic duel from natlrogers – it’s like fighting the intro guy from Monty Python’s Flying Circus…

World’s longest standoff from r/ghostoftsushima

Or sometimes your dramatic fight is interrupted by a bird landing on your rival’s head, and then you feel so bad for accidentally killing it you miss the next guy, as submitted by AlterMyStateOfMind.

I killed a bird during a standoff lol from r/ghostoftsushima

Finally, YellowSnowTheGamer proves that proper duel etiquette must account for fire safety.

What a great standoff! from r/ghostoftsushima

There are six Ghost of Tsushima Mythic Tales altogether, indicated by blue icons on the map. You’ll periodically unlock access to them throughout Jin’s resistance to the Mongol empire, and completing them grants you some of the most effective skills and tools during your time with Ghost of Tsushima (opens in new tab). We’ve got a list with all the Ghost of Tsushima Mythic Tales here, along with the rewards you’ll unlock for completing them.

Don’t worry if you want to complete a specific Mythic Tale but it isn’t available for you; continue with the main story tales, marked by the gold icons, and eventually you’ll unlock all of the Mythic Tales. The map above shows the location of all six Mythic Tales, while the full list below is in the order you’ll unlock them, with a brief overview of what each one entails, and the reward you’ll get.

Heavenly Strike

Reward: Heavenly Strike. A quick, unblockable attack that inflicts extra damage against staggered enemies. Kills may terrify nearby enemies.

The first Mythic Tale you’ll take on is Heavenly Strike, which can be started by finding the musician to the east of Komatsu Forge. This is a lengthy quest that involves learning the tale of Shigenori, the fastest swordsman in all of Tsushima. By the end of it, you’ll unlock the Heavenly Strike skill once you defeat Yasuhira Koga. This allows you to execute a high-damage, unblockable slash through an enemy at the cost of one resolve.

Legend of Tadayori

Reward: Tadayori’s Armour

  • Increases nocking and reload speed by 30%
  • Increases total Concentration time by 2 seconds
  • Headshots restore 50% of the Concentration meter

The Legend of Tadayori is also in Izuhara, the first region you explore in Tsushima. Speak to the musician to the east of Kishi Village who will tell you the tale of Tadayori Nagao, the greatest archer on Tsushima Island. This quest involves searching for specific areas in the map based on paintings and after you complete this lengthy quest that sends you all over Izuhara, you’ll get Tadayori’s Armour. This is the best armour for anyone fending off enemies from range. If you’re struggling to find the locations depicted, have a look at the screenshots below.

When you need to search for violet flowers, look for the search area on your map and this is what you need to find.

Next, you’ll need to find the area depicted in the drawing. If you climb the lookout tower near the first location, you can see over the treeline. In the distance is the next area, where you’ll find Tadayori’s Rest.

For the final part of the tale, you need to head to Azamo Bay on the south coast. If you haven’t cleared out the village yet then approaching the gates will mean you’re met with overwhelming forces, but you can head to the right-hand side of the path before you reach the gate and climb the cliff that overlooks the small town. Up here, you’ll just need to defend the musician from Mongol attack to complete the tale.

Curse of Uchitsune

Reward: Longbow. High damage and zoom, but long draw time, and you cannot crouch while aiming.

If you thought The Legend of Tadayori had you sauntering all the way around Izuhara, get ready for the Curse of Uchitsune. This Mythic Tale is how you unlock the Longbow — a stronger ranged weapon than the Half-bow — and involves finding locations depicted on paintings before ending in another duel.

The first area you’ll have to find is full of blue flowers this time, not violet ones. It’s on the eastern coast of Toyotama; you’ll start finding trails of flowers as you move through the forest towards the coast. Enter the tomb you find and you’ll discover a painting.

Now you’re looking for an island full of blue flowers. Head north up the eastern coast and when you reach the Mending Rock Shrine entrance, look a little further north and you’ll be able to see the island in the distance. Complete the shrine if you haven’t already, then head over to the island by descending the cliff when you get closer.

For the third and final location you need to find, you’re looking for a mountain with blue flowers. You need to head quite a way in-land this time, towards Yoichi’s Slope. Head to the area just above those words on the map and you should find the right place, where you’ll face off against a demon in the final fight.

The Unbreakable Gosaku

Reward: Gosaku’s Armour.

  • Massive increase to health
  • Major increase to Stagger Damage
  • Killing a Staggered enemy restores 20% of health

When you reach Toyotama, you’ll be able to tackle The Unbreakable Gosaku Mythic Tale, found in the southern part of the region. This is all about a man named Gosaku who became a guardian for the farmers of Tsushima after stealing some armour. Now it’s your turn to take it. You may already have some keys for this tale from Izuhara, as you need to claim six in total from captured farmsteads marked throughout both Izuhara and Toyotama. When you have them all, you can complete The Unbreakable Gosaku and earn the armour.

The Spirit of Yarikawa’s Vengeance

Reward: Dance of Wrath. Unleash three consecutive unblockable attacks that deal high damage. Kills may terrify nearby enemies.

The Spirit of Yarikawa’s Vengeance begins in the eastern region of Toyotama. This is the spookiest of the Mythical Tales as you hunt down rumours of a ghost haunting Toyotama and once again, you need to travel throughout the region searching for leads. Eventually you’ll find the Spirit of Yarikawa, and defeating it will earn you the Dance of Wrath. This is the most powerful skill in the game as it slices through three enemies in rapid movements, but costs three resolve to use.

Undying Flame

Reward: Way of the Flame. Use Incendiary Oil to ignite your katana and burn your foes.

The sixth and final Mythic Tale is the Undying Flame, and can be started up in Kamiagata, the third region of Tsushima. Head over to Mount Jogaku where you’ll find the musician by a campfire. This is perhaps the trickiest of the Mythical Tales; you need to ascend the mountain without dying to the cold. Resting at campfires will warm you back up again, just don’t die to the wolves along the way. When you reach the top, duel Bettomaru at the dojo to earn the Incendiary Oil for your sword. This allows you to set it alight and burn your enemies.
