Final Fantasy 7 Remake devs have revealed that Tifa was the hardest character to create a battle style for.

Square Enix has posted a brand new developer interview blog to their official website (opens in new tab), this time focusing on Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s fifth chapter with those who helped create the RPG. In the game itself, this is a chapter where the player can control a variety of characters in battle, including Cloud, Tifa, Barrett, and Aerith.

When asked if Tifa was a difficult character to balance for the remake, Teruki Endo, battle director for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, confirmed as much. “It was comparatively easy to differentiate Cloud, Barret, and Aerith,” Endo explains. “But we had to think extremely hard about what defining characteristics we should give Tifa,” the battle director continued.

However, Endo believes Square Enix ultimately succeeded in giving added depth to Tifa in the remake’s combat system, by tying her abilities to the ‘Burst’ system. This core pillar of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s combat governs how much damage enemies can take before they’re stunned, and Tifa has key abilities that massively boost the amount of stagger damage dealt to an enemy.

In our Final Fantasy 7 Remake review from 2020, we heaped praise upon the remake’s overhauled combat system, writing that the combat was “satisfyingly varied” thanks chiefly to each character feeling distinctly different and entertaining to play. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to Remake and part two of a planned trilogy, should keep the party-based combat going when it arrives next year in Winter 2023.

Here’s why the Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core Reunion remaster is a must-play ahead of Rebirth launching near the end of next year.

The latest PS Plus Premium leak suggests Final Fantasy 7 Remake and several Assassin’s Creed games will be added to the service in July.

Some new games making their way to PS Plus Extra and Premium later this month might have been revealed ahead of time. As reported by Push Square (opens in new tab), ResetEra user BlackBate (opens in new tab) has revealed a bunch of titles that they claim are coming to Sony’s shiny new PS Plus service on July 19. The list includes various entries in the Assassin’s Creed series, such as Black Flag and The Ezio Collection. For RPG fans, there’s Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Episode Intermission – an extra chapter that’s set during the events of the main game and stars Yuffie Kisaragi.

According to BlackBate, these are the game’s coming to Sony’s subscription service:

  • Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade + FF7R Episode Intermission
  • Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag
  • Assassin’s Creed Unity
  • Assassin’s Creed Rogue Remastered
  • Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry
  • Assassin’s Creed The Ezio Collection
  • Saints Row IV: Re-Elected

If this turns out to be true, these titles will arrive alongside Stray, the long-awaited platformer that sees you play as an adorable ginger cat looking for his family in a world overrun by robots. It’s also worth noting that BlackBate says that these are “some of the games,” suggesting that more will be added to the above line-up.

It’s best not to get too excited about the possible new additions until we have official confirmation from Sony, but BlackBate appears to be a reliable source, having previously accurately leaked information on Death Stranding Director’s Cut, Skull and Bones, and Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Sony rolled out its new PlayStation Plus service last month, which offers three membership tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. The Essential tier is basically the same as the old PS Plus service, while Extra members can enjoy up to 400 PS5 and PS4 games. Those opting for the top tier get access to a library of PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP classics. This month’s regular PS Plus games include Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan, and Arcadegeddon.

There are a lot of great titles making their way to Sony’s new-gen console. Check them out in our guide to upcoming PS5 games.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, formerly referred to as Remake Part 2, has been revealed, with Square Enix confirming a launch on PS5 “next Winter.”

The first trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was shown off during today’s 25th anniversary stream, where we finally got to see glimpses of what Square Enix has described as “a different atmosphere” compared to the part one of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. We can see what appears to be a more open world outside of Midgar as well as big story teases via narration from Cloud and Aerith. Check out the thrilling first trailer right here:

Today’s reveal trailer’s focus on a bigger, more open world is in keeping with past comments we’ve heard from the developers. Last July, co-director Naoki Hamaguchi told IGN the “next installment will involve Cloud and company to leave Midgar and explore the world,” and that “our next challenge will be to create gameplay that leverages the vastness of the world.”

One of the few criticisms of the first Final Fantasy 7 Remake chapter is that it’s quite linear all the way through to the end, its setting confined to the bustling urban sprawl of Midgar. This time around, however, Cloud and co. are leaving Midgard in pursuit of Sephiroth, and it looks and sounds like there will be a little more space to move around.

Curiously, a chief developer on Rebirth is already distinguishing Rebirth as very much a standalone game that players can experience without having played the first game. Creative director Tetsuya Nomura even suggests Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth as an alternative starting point for the series.

“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is being designed so that people can enjoy this game whether they know the original game or not,” Nomura said in a statement shared just after today’s announcement. “In fact, new players might even enjoy starting their Final Fantasy VII journey with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Cloud and his friends embark on a new journey in this game, and I believe that the scenes that they witness after leaving Midgar will give players a fresh, new experience.”

Producer Yoshinori Kitase shared his own statement, acknowledging the three years (and change, if we’re counting) wait between Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and promising “development is proceeding at an astonishingly fast pace for such a large-scale HD title.”

“Making the middle part of a trilogy has its own challenges, but there are plenty of classic second installments in the world of film that are defined by stunning story twists and deeper explorations of their characters,” Kitase said. “Often these second installments become a favorite amongst the fans.”

Additionally, Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade is launching on Steam tomorrow, June 17.

Controller modder SuperLouis 64 (opens in new tab) has created a way to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake using an actual buster sword.

SuperLouis 64 is known for playing games in unconventional ways, from sprinting through Final Fantasy 14 with a Ring Fit to playing Demon’s Souls with a Dance Dance Revolution pad, and this is one of his most ambitious and flavorful ideas yet. By strapping buttons and motion detectors to a model buster sword, SuperLouis has not only once again turned gaming into a workout, he’s also built the ultimate Cloud role-playing tool in the process. “Kid me who pretended to be Cloud would be so proud,” he said in a tweet.

YALL My buster sword controller for #FF7R is coming to life. I just finished some motion testing before I go all in on building the controller and my current code is almost perfect. Kid me who pretended to be Cloud would be so proud 😭 pic.twitter.com/DjAI91iqd0October 24, 2021

Slashing with this modded buster sword causes Cloud to attack in-game, and SuperLouis can even hold a high guard stance to block attacks. For more precise inputs like changing party members, SuperLouis added buttons into the mix to mimic PS5 face buttons and triggers. This build is still a work in progress, but it’s already more than functional.

This buster sword model only weighs around four pounds, but SuperLouis says its small grip and hefty size make it feel much heavier in practice. “Part of the rebuild is to make the grip larger and padded so it’s easier on the wrist,” he explained in a Twitter reply. “Cloud must have some muscle muscle on him because after 30 minutes of swinging I had to take a break.”

A Final Fantasy fan is the only person in the world who has obtained every trophy in the franchise.

Talan Kirk, who is also known as Rebourne07 on Reddit and PSN, recently spoke with Kotaku (opens in new tab) about their impressive achievement explaining that they got their first trophy from Final Fantasy 13 on PS3 in November 2010 and recently got their final one on August 8, 2021, from Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Kirk shared his achievement on the r/gaming subreddit (opens in new tab) where it garnered the attention of fans, many of whom sent in their congratulations or reminisced about their time playing the many entries in the series and the trophies they struggled to get themselves.

According to the Kotaku article, Kirk was previously one of two people to hit the milestone. Recently, however, the count has changed – since the release of the remastered version of Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 7, and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles on PS4, as well as Final Fantasy 14 and the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Integrade on PS5, Kirk has shot ahead of their rival, becoming the only person to complete the feat.

Kirk doesn’t recommend that anyone attempt to do the same as him though, as it has taken him a decade – due to playing the games as they were released – and amounted to roughly 3,000 hours of playtime, all while juggling real-life commitments too.

Feeling like you’ve had enough of Square Enix’s JRPG? Take a look at our games like Final Fantasy list for inspiration on what to play next.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will be a PS5 exclusive for “at least six months.”

Sony briefly outlined the exclusivity window of the upcoming enhanced edition of the game in its new trailer (opens in new tab), which notes that Intergrade will be “available on PS5 at least six months earlier than any other format.”

This might sound kind of confusing since Final Fantasy 7 Remake itself is currently only available on PlayStation platforms. However, the PS4 exclusivity on the base game technically expired last month, meaning Square Enix could bring it to other platforms any minute now. With Intergrade launching June 10, its timed exclusivity will run through “at least” December 10, 2021.

Square Enix has never actually revealed plans to bring Final Fantasy 7 Remake to other platforms, but it clearly didn’t sign up for timed PlayStation exclusivity for no reason. Likewise, Sony and Square Enix presumably wouldn’t have created two distinct exclusivity windows – one for the base game and now one for Intergrade – if the plan was to skip other platforms the first time around and eventually make Intergrade the cross-platform version.

It’s possible that plans and timelines have shifted since the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but we can reasonably assume that the original Final Fantasy 7 Remake will arrive on PC and/or Xbox in the months ahead. And even if these platforms only receive the original game for the time being, the graphics and performance of the PC version will likely rival Intergrade, and the Xbox version will undoubtedly be playable on Xbox Series X, meaning that it should run a whole lot better than the once-exclusive PS4 version.

Beyond graphical enhancements, Intergrade also packs in some new story content not seen in the base game. It will be a free upgrade to PS5 owners who already purchased the PS4 game, with the small caveat that physical copies can’t be upgraded on the all-digital PS5.

Intergrade will launch alongside Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Episode Intermission, a $20 standalone expansion, which stars the fan-favorite Materia hunter Yuffie Kisaragi.

We now know that Part , officially titled Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, will pick up where the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade ends

Square Enix has dropped an all-new teaser for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade (opens in new tab).

Well, I say all-new, but the eagle-eyed amongst you might well notice we’ve seen some of this footage before, albeit not quite all of it. That said, this “PS5 extended and enhanced features” teaser does give us a little more insight into how the game will be boosted for PS5 players. If you’ve got six minutes to kill, grab a drink and check it out for yourself:

“In this extended video, take a look at the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments,” teases the video description.

“Switch between two game modes ‘Graphics Mode,’ which prioritizes 4K high-resolution graphics, and ‘Performance Mode’, which prioritizes smooth action at 60 frames per second, and capture and share your favorite moments of this timeless adventure with a fully customizable Photo Mode. Enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense wireless controller, with its haptic feedback integration.”

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is slated to launch for PS4 and PS5 on June 10.

Currently, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is set to launch for both PS4 and PS5, but Episode Yuffie will be exclusive DLC for the latter platform (opens in new tab). Elsewhere, the upgraded package enhances the visuals of the remake for 4K performance, but the 60 frames per second boost (opens in new tab) will also be exclusive to Sony’s next-gen console, like Episode Yuffie.

For a complete list of all the other games coming to Sony’s next-gen console over the next year, head over to our upcoming PS5 games (opens in new tab) guide for more.

Square Enix has unveiled two new Final Fantasy 7 mobile games: a battle royale and a single-player RPG.

Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier is a mobile battle royale with third-person melee combat and shooting and an original story taking players back 30 years before the events of Final Fantasy 7. Given that the game was just announced and we only have a brief teaser trailer, we aren’t sure what else to expect from The First Soldier, but the trailer mentions Soldier and says you’ll “lay waste to your foes and climb the ranks.” Square says it should hit Android and iOS mobile devices sometime this year. Check out the trailer:

The other mobile game Square Enix announced today is called Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis, a single-player RPG retelling the entire story of Final Fantasy 7, including the compilation titles. Square calls it a “chapter-structured single player” and a “return to Final Fantasy 7’s world with a nostalgic visual twist.”

As you’ll notice in the trailer below, the game sports an isometric perspective and art style similar to the original PlayStation classic. Ever Crisis seems like a solid complement to the console-based Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is being broken down into several full-length games. As Square itself phrases it, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is “another possibility for a remake.” Expect to see that launch on mobile devices in 2022.

During today’s PlayStation State of Play stream, Square Enix also revealed Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade, an upgraded PS5 version of the acclaimed PS4 game released last year. Intergrade includes improved performance and visuals, as well as a brand new episode where you play as the fan-favorite ninja Yuffie.

Here are all the new games of 2021 we can’t wait to check out.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake could be getting updated PS5 and PC ports sporting new story content.

That’s according to reputable Final Fantasy leaker Navtra (opens in new tab), who recently suggested that the remake is headed to PS5 and PC packing more than visual upgrades. They acknowledged that this information is both unofficial and potentially outdated, but maintained that “new story content” was planned for the upgraded ports.

This isn’t the first time that Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been rumored for other platforms, but current circumstances suggest this may be the last time before an official announcement. For starters, the game’s co-director, Motomu Toriyama, says new information on the remake will be announced at a concert coming this Saturday, February 13. Naturally, Toriyama didn’t up and say ‘hey look out for a PS5 version,’ but the possibility remains on the table.

Just as importantly, we know that Final Fantasy 7 Remake could come to other platforms as early as April, which is when its timed PS4 exclusivity will come to an end. This exclusivity window was originally scheduled to end on March 3, according to the initial box art, but it was later extended to April 10. April’s not far away, so if Square Enix does have PS5 and/or PC ports in store, this month would be a reasonable time to announce them.

On top of that, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was among the games updated with unspecified PS5-related support last October. God of War (2018) was also on the list, and its official PS5 upgrade patch was released just last week.

All of this remains unconfirmed, but the timing raises an eyebrow and the idea certainly isn’t far-fetched. After all, Square Enix just announced an upgraded PS5 port of Final Fantasy 14

What’s coming in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2? Two developers gave us a little tease earlier this month.

It would seem as though God of War 3 Remastered, God of War (2018), and Final Fantasy 7 Remake have all been updated with PS5-related support.

The new information comes by way of famed Bloodborne and Dark Souls dataminer Lance McDonald. According to McDonald, all three games have been updated to feature PS5 support in some capacity, but McDonald doesn’t know in what ways each game has been updated, at least until he’s able to do some digging and find out for himself.

Ok I can confirm that God of War 3 Remastered, God of War (2018) and Final Fantasy 7 Remake have now been updated with some amount of added PS5 support. However, there’s no way to know what amount of “support” this actually is until we get hands-on.October 23, 2020

In a reply to the original tweet above, a user wonders if any of the three games will be able to hit 60 frames per second on the PS5. McDonald replies that because 2018’s God of War features an uncapped frame rate if you’re able to hack the game, it’s incredibly likely that Sony Santa Monica’s reboot will be able to hit 60FPS on the PS5.

Elsewhere though, we have no idea what features could theoretically be in store for God of War 3: Remastered and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It’d be amazing to see Square Enix’s remake running in 60FPS on the PS5, but we’ll have to wait for little under a month from now to find out for ourselves, when the PS5 launches on November 12.

If you’re unfamiliar with McDonald’s work, he’s risen to fame largely through datamining and patching Bloodborne. His most recent work managed to introduce a 60FPS patch for Bloodborne, a patch that McDonald says he plans to make available after the launch of the PS5 later this year.

Speaking of, if you’re still looking to put down a pre-order for Sony’s next-gen console ahead of its launch next month on November 10, head over to our PS5 pre-orders page for a complete list of retailers with stock.
