EA has filed a patent which could lead to better online connections for games like FIFA and Battlefield.

Although the patent, which is called “Providing video game content to an online connected game (opens in new tab)” was first filed by EA back in 2020, it was only recently approved. In short, the patent actually focuses on machine learning, but would utilize this form of technology to analyze the connection of a player in real time.

EA’s servers would use this patent’s technology to study requests sent in by players to the server, and deduce how reliable the server itself was at carrying out the requests of the player. The machine learning tech would then acquire these results, and run them through a test to reveal the probability that the server would be able to carry out the requests of the player.

This all boils down to EA being able to run tests on servers while they’re still live, so FIFA and Battlefield servers could be monitored while they’re still being used by players around the world. The tests will feed back data to EA that will reveal which servers aren’t able to fulfil requests that players have submitted, thus being able to register which servers require maintenance before problems get out of hand.

Considering the longevity of EA’s FIFA series, and its commitment to improving Battlefield 2042, this is no doubt good news for online players throughout EA’s games. A new trademark from the company recently hinted that they could actually drop the FIFA name from the ongoing sports series in the future, as “EA Sports FC” was found referenced online.

FIFA 22 Future Stars are certain to be a hot commodity all the way through to the season’s end. These cards see promising youngsters such as Jude Bellingham and Emile Smith Rowe get boosted FIFA 22 ratings, representing their future peaks – with Ibrahima Konate and Patson Daka also receiving one-time upgrades. How does the promo work, and where can you see a full list of cards? The complete scouting report is here, in your FIFA 22 Future Stars guide.

What is the FIFA 22 Future Stars promo?

FIFA 22

FIFA 22 Future Stars kicked off on Friday, February 4. The name is a giveaway: it’s a new batch of cards covering the world’s best young players, all of which have huge ratings boosts. So while Smith Rowe’s normal card is rated 76, his new item gets a 91 OVR – while Konate leaps from 78 to 89.

All players are under 23 and haven’t been featured in previous edition campaigns such as FIFA 21 Future Stars

Who is in FIFA 22 Future Stars Team 1?

FIFA 22

Smith Rowe and Konate, obviously, while the highest-rated player is prodigious England talent Jude Bellingham (CM, Dortmund, 93). Also breaking the 90 barrier are Dusan Vlahovic (ST, Piemonte Calcio, 92) and Aurelien Tchouameni (CM, Monaco, 91). The other Premier League players initially found in packs are Joao Pedro (ST, Watford, 87) and Trincao (RW, Wolves, 87).

Additionally you could nab Arthur Cabral (ST, Fiorentina, 87) in the first FIFA 22 Future Stars SBC, and Chelsea starlet Trevoh Chalobah was on offer as an objectives-based challenge. His initial card is rated 79, but the completion of in-game tasks unlocks additional cards which go all the way up to 88.

All the cards from Team 1 are included in the player list at the end of this guide.

Were the FIFA 22 Future Stars Team 2 predictions correct?

FIFA 22

Social media reckoned there was a FIFA 22 Future Stars Team 2 leak before the promo even began, and many of those players listed did indeed get new cards second time around. They include Barcelona midfielder Pedri (CM, 93), Leicester City striker Patson Daka (ST, 88), Real Betis left-back Miranda (LB, 86), and outstanding Ajax prospect Ryan Gravenberch (CM, 92).

Also added in the follow-up squad are Bryan Gil (LM, Valencia, 89) and Mohammed Salisu (CB, Southampton, 86), while new objectives rewards include Samuel Chukwueze (RM, Villarreal, 88) and Amine Gouri (ST, OGC Nice, 88).

All Team 2 additions are included in the full Future Stars card list at the foot of this feature.

What are FIFA 22 Future Stars Swap Tokens?

FIFA 22

FIFA 22 Future Stars Swap Tokens were a bonus element of FIFA 22 TOTY (Team Of The Year) which carried over into this promo. Completing objectives and SBCs scored up to 28 tokens that can be exchanged for packs or players.

25 tokens could be traded in for a player pick from Future Stars Team 1, or you could offload 20 tokens in return for an 89-rated version of Crystal Palace midfielder Gallagher.

15 tokens earned you a pack of 10 players rated 85 or more, while you could exchange 12 tokens for Jeremie Frimpong (RB, Leverkusen, 88).

Alternatively you could trade 12 tokens for a random Team 1 player, 8 tokens for an 88-rated Frimpong card, 5 tokens for an Ultimate Pack, 3 tokens for a pack of 10 cards rated 81-89, or 2 tokens for a Rare Players Pack.

All of these challenges sadly expired on Friday, February 25.

Is there a complete FIFA 22 Future Stars cards list?

Update: FIFA 23 might be renamed EA Sports FC, according to a new trademark filing.

As spotted by VGC (opens in new tab), EA filed an application in the UK and the EU for something called ‘EA Sports FC’ last week. The trademarks were filed shortly before the company revealed it was exploring the possibility of ending its decades-long naming rights agreement with FIFA.

It’s worth noting that EA Sports Football Club was a social feature that existed in the franchise as early as 2011, and ran until 2020. That could mean that the trademark is being renewed in an attempt to resurrect a version of that feature, but could also lend the new name an element of recognition within the series’ established community.

Original story: EA has surprisingly announced that it’s considering a new name for the FIFA series.

The move comes mere days after rival Konami launched eFootball 2022 (below) in place of its long-standing Pro Evolution Soccer franchise – to furious social media feedback and disastrous reviews

eFootball 2022

EA’s statement came as part of a press release celebrating FIFA 22’s opening weekend, which tallied 9.1 million players, 7.6 million Ultimate Team squads and 460 million matches.

“While we are only at the beginning of our journey with you in this year’s game, we’re also focused on where we go from here,” wrote EA Sports GM Cam Weber.

“We’re here to create the best experiences for football fans everywhere… As we look ahead, we’re also exploring the idea of renaming our global EA Sports football games. This means we’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world.”

[Away from gaming, FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association, and is the worldwide governing body of all things kickabout-related.]

FIFA 22

The move would be even more shocking than Konami’s eFootball rebrand – after all, PES itself was pre-dated by the International Superstar Soccer name. In contrast, EA’s football series has been released under the FIFA banner since its 1993 inception on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

The timing is curious too. Back in 2013, EA signed a deal with FIFA which ends in 2022 – covering management games in addition to its annual football sim. By going public in the above manner, EA could be preparing the buying masses for FIFA 23 to emerge under a new name, or it may be hoping the threat of losing the series drives down the asking price of re-upping the worldwide license.

Individual deals, such as tie-ins with UEFA, the Premier League, and Serie A, aren’t affected by the FIFA contact. All those competitions will therefore remain in FIFA 23, EA Sports Football 23, Rooney Soccer 23, or whatever else the next installment is called.

FIFA 22 is out now. Just getting started? Then jump on over to our FIFA 22 tips.

FIFA 22 may have more than 700 teams, but the only one I care about is unique to my game. Thanks to the Create-A-Club section of Career Mode, I can finally go off on a footballing journey that offers the sort of stakes and intrigue you might expect from a BioWare game. Will my team of no-hopers be able to overcome the rigors of the English League 2? Can they learn to adapt to the aggressive 3-5-2 formation I’m wedded to? Will I be able to leave the kit creation screen to actually start this soccer odyssey?

Okay, I might be slightly over-egging the genuine stakes of Worle Athletic’s creation, but still, Create-A-Club is FIFA’s most enjoyable new mode in a long time, and that’s because it doesn’t do too much outside of offering you the chance to create your own drama. Like all the best RPGs, it gives you enough information to let smaller narratives play out in your head, all while giving you a larger goal to strive for, with a cast of characters you care about. The only difference between creating a club in FIFA and picking a real one is that the player names aren’t real and the kits they play in are the ones you design. I shouldn’t love it as much as I do, and yet here we are.

There’s only one [Insert Your Club Name Here]

FIFA 22

“And while I’m not even going to pretend there’s a player in my current squad who is half as memorable as Castolo or Espimas (if you know, you know), it’s still much easier to warm to players who only exist in your special little team.”

For football fans of a certain vintage, it’ll remind you of the glory days of the PES Master League. And while I’m not even going to pretend there’s a player in my current squad who is half as memorable as Castolo or Espimas (if you know, you know), it’s still much easier to warm to players who only exist in your special little team. For instance, there’s the young Rennie who sits at the heart of my defence, who is currently a 58-rated player but I have high hopes for his future. Or there’s club captain Higgins, a jobbing 28-year old striker who is the club’s most capable player (well, until the January transfer window comes around) and I grip my pad a feather tighter every time he’s through on goal, knowing full well he’s my team’s best chance of promotion.

If you think this is stretching the definition of RPG as far as it can go, you’re probably right, but outside of me inventing my own narratives for these players, there’s training sessions where you can increase their stats, the ability to have conversations with them about their playing time, contract, or performances, and even romance a couple. Okay, that last one was clearly a lie, but outside of soccer smooching, Create-A-Club gives you a league to create your own stories in, and now you immerse yourself by creating a team instead of just inheriting one.

All about The Journey

FIFA 22

“Why not pinch from EA’s great RPG masters at BioWare by giving you a space around a ground for talking to players (think the Normandy, but it’s a closed off training facility in the South West)?”

It’s not like EA hasn’t dribbled down this road before. From FIFA 17 to 19, The Journey was the game’s actual story mode, which focused on young footballer Alex Hunter. Throughout three games, you saw him go from teen hopeful to global superstar, and along the way, had to manage dramas in his personal and professional life, as well as making surprising friends and enemies along the way. It was an RPG, no two ways about it, and could provide a blueprint for EA to really make Career Mode shine.

Considering Career Mode has been stagnating for quite some time – the biggest addition last year was the ability to simulate games in real time, rather than simply skipping to the end – it shows that there’s a huge amount of scope to do something special with this mode. Why not crib from a show like Ted Lasso and give your created club a cast of background characters to bounce off, managing egos and finances through conversations instead of shiny menus? Or look to the likes of Amazon’s All or Nothing series, where we get a more candid look at players behind the scene? Or even pinch from EA’s great RPG masters at BioWare by giving you a space around a ground for approaching and talking to players (think the Normandy, but it’s a closed off training facility in the South West)?

Little things could help sustain this momentum going forward, because I sincerely hope the story of Worle Athletic – and every other player-created club this year – isn’t just a one season wonder.

EA has revealed the full list of leagues and teams for FIFA 22 – and there’s massive news for fans of the Indian Super League.

Former temporary home to the likes of David Trezeguet, Robert Pires and Roberto Carlos, the Hero ISL contains 11 teams and is the first full league added to the series since the Chinese Super League landed in FIFA 19.

The 11 sides added are as follows:

  • ATK Mohun Bagan
  • Bengaluru FC
  • Chennaiyin FC
  • FC Goa
  • Hyderabad FC
  • Jamshedpur FC
  • Kerala Blasters
  • Mumbai City FC
  • NorthEast United
  • Odisha FC
  • SC East Bengal

EA says that the new additions take the tally of teams in the game past 700, with more than 100 licensed stadiums and 17,000 players. You can view the complete list at the official EA website (opens in new tab).

To accompany the announcement, it’s also unveiled a new partnership with Lega Serie A. The Italian top flight will now have a regular player of the month award in Ultimate Team, 16 fully licensed clubs (which should mean more player faces and stadia), and “more of the unique characteristics of Italian football” – EA’s words, not ours. At the very least that should mean league-specific broadcast overlays in exhibition and career mode.

The four clubs no longer licensed in FIFA are Juventus, Roma, Atalanta and Lazio. They’ll still have accurate player names, but be given generic kits and badges and be known as follows:

  • Juventus: Piemonte Calcio
  • Roma: Roma FC
  • Atalanta: Bergamo Calcio
  • Lazio: Latium

Badges and kits for the four missing clubs are exclusive to Pro Evolution Soccer successor eFootball 2022. Napoli will be too, from eFootball 2023 onwards – as revealed in a GamesRadar+ news story last April.

PES 2021

“EA Sports and Lega Serie A are entering into a multi-year agreement which allows for Serie A clubs to be authentically represented in-game, providing that the rights of those clubs are available and not currently contractually held exclusively by another party,” said a company statement. “EA Sports is respectful of pre-existing relationships that certain clubs have with third parties, but is equally committed to further growing its presence in Italian football both now and in the future.”

The partnership will see the Supercoppa Italiana rebranded as the EA Sports Supercup from the 2022-23 season onwards.

FIFA 22 is released on Friday, October 1 and Ultimate Team is getting a whole new batch of old-school players – see nine of the best in our FIFA 22 Heroes guide.
