However, the solicit text for Fantastic Four #46 implies that the family reunion may not be completely happy, asking “is it time to welcome her into the family?”

Whatever the deal is, we’ll meet Reed’s sister when Fantastic Four #46 releases on July 13.

September 15’s Fantastic Four #35 (opens in new tab) is an oversized issue celebrating 60 years since Fantastic Four #1. In contains stories from writers Dan Slott, Jason Loo, and Mark Waid, with art from Loo, John Romita Jr., Paul Renaud, JP Meyer, Cam Smith, Mark Morales, Rafael Fonteriz, Scott Hanna, Marte Gracia, and Erick Arciniega.

Appropriately for the milestone, Fantastic Four #35’s main story digs into the FF’s central concept of family in some strange ways dealing with Kang and his many variants, and Reed Richards’ own father/Kang’s ancestor Nathaniel Richards – all of which culminates in a major bombshell revelation about Reed Richards and his past.

Picking up just after the events of Fantastic Four #34 (opens in new tab), in which the wedding of Doctor Doom was shown to be a ruse and during which Doom sent Johnny Storm’s powers out of control, the FF return home with Johnny in a protective bubble, as he can’t turn off his flaming powers.

Quickly discovering that, despite their security measures, a strange-looking object of unknown origin has manifested itself in an invisibility field in the newly unveiled, remodeled Baxter Building, Reed and Sue find and capture the object.

The story then jumps to Null Space, the area outside the time-space continuum where Kang and his many variants congregate. In Null Space, Immortus assembles Kang and his fellow variants Scarlet Centurion and Rama-Tut, as well as an apparently new variant known as the Scion, who claims to be Kang’s final form from far in the future.

Immortus explains that their ancestor Nathaniel Richards, the father of Reed Richards, created a special device, splitting it into four parts that are hidden in different eras of Reed’s history. The Kang variants must all come together to obtain the four pieces of the mysterious device, which Immortus says will grant its wielder untold power. Kang, Rama-Tut, Scarlet Centurion, and Scion all depart to different points in the FF’s past with the goal of killing the FF and stealing the piece of the object that is hidden in each respective era.

All four Kang variants are apparently successful, gathering together back in Null Space with the pieces of the device now gathered, and with a series of new, divergent timelines now created as a result of the deaths of the FF in the past.

With the device promised to go to the person with the best story, Rama-Tut, Scarlet Centurion, and Kang all recount their own fights against the heroes and how they dispatched the FF.

Their stories reflect Kang’s personal philosophies during each different phase of his life, from Rama-Tut’s overly elaborate, Silver Age-ish scheme, Scarlet Centurion enlisting the Thunderbolts to do his bidding for him, and Kang preferring to kill the Fantastic Four face-to-face in bloody combat.

But it’s Scion, the new variant, who totally turns the scheme on its head, revealing that not only did he save members of the FF from each of his counterparts’ attempts to kill them, he’s also not even actually a Kang variant at all.

Who is he? Well, the name ‘Scion’ turns out to be a clue, as the villain is actually Reed Richards in disguise – the true scion of Nathaniel Richards. Reed explains that he was able to get the drop on Kang and his time-traveling ilk for once, outsmarting them and assembling his father’s mystery device for himself.

Back at the Baxter Building, Reed assembles the machine, discovering a message from his father meant solely for him. And in that message, Nathaniel Richards drops a bombshell: he had a secret, second family, including a daughter – Reed’s long lost sister, whom Nathaniel tasks the FF with protecting.

]]> December 29’s Timeless #1 (opens in new tab) from writer Jed MacKay, artists Kev Walker, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessey, Marte Gracia, and letterer Ariana Maher lays out a series of teases for future Marvel Comics stories coming in 2022, including some concepts that have been previously shown, and a few brand new teasers for upcoming stories.

What’s in store for the Marvel Universe, as shown by Kang the Conqueror’s precognitive future technology in the story? We’ll break it all down right now.

Spoilers ahead for Timeless #1

Timeless #1 is framed around Kang the Conqueror as he takes a jaunt through the Marvel Universe’s past and future alongside Professor Anatoly Petrov, a college professor specializing in the concept of supervillains.

Kang takes Petrov along with him to show him his influence over the timeline, as Petrov’s writing reveres Doctor Doom as the most influential villain of the Marvel Universe. But as the pair travel across the timestream, Kang discovers an anomaly causing temporal disruption: a rogue timeline that was cast off and destroyed by Immortus, but which has survived and is trying to rejoin the main Marvel timeline – causing huge ripples in the Marvel Universe.

As Kang uses the observation equipment of his Oracle Base to determine the nature of the anomaly, he examines upcoming events in the Marvel Universe, some of which seem to be driven by the incursion of the “Pirate Timeline”. On his monitors (seen above), he sees visions of numerous Marvel characters along with brief, related prophecies, including:

Doyle Dormammu killing his father with the Twilight Sword, “The son takes up the Twilight Sword and strikes down the father.”
Ben Reilly swinging through Los Angeles, “While a son with no father finds a new home.”
A tease of the new Iron Fist, “The Iron Fist reforged for a new hand.”
A glimpse of Punisher joining the Hand, “While another hand is driven by a new lord on a mission of punishment.”
A tease of the Fantastic Four’s ‘Reckoning War’ storyline, showing the moon under attack, “The moon cracked in a great reckoning.”
A second Reckoning War tease showing a flag flying with a strange symbol, “While further in the future, another reckoning leaves humanity with dominion over Earth.”
A tease for the current Iron Man run in which Tony Stark has gained cosmic power, creating an ‘Iron God’ armor, “A new god takes their throne.”
Captain America seemingly being gunned down by Winter Soldier, “While an old icon falls.”
A glimpse at a new team of Young Avengers, though their identities aren’t clear, “A young generation of Avengers rise.”
A look at Taskmaster wearing Captain America’s uniform and carrying his shield, alongside Batroc, Paladin, Titanium Man, and a woman who may be Red Skull’s daughter, Sin, “To reclaim a stolen name.”
A look at Shuri as the Black Panther alongside a red-haired woman in a Spider-Man costume – possibly Mary Jane, as seen in Mephisto’s vision of his own downfall shown in Amazing Spider-Man #74, with an implication from the text that MJ may take Peter Parker’s place as a hero at some point, “The brave honor the sacrifices of those in their hearts.”
A look at the returning Jack of Hearts, “And a heart once thought lost beats new.”

The scene also shows separate glimpses of the previously teased image of Thanos wielding an Infinity Stone-encrusted Mjolnir, the entrance of Ravencroft Asylum, and what looks like Manhattan overrun by symbiotes. A final tease arrives at the very end of Timeless #1, with Anatoly Petrov drawing Miracleman’s logo in his notes, stating that he can’t get the vision of Miracleman he saw in Kang’s Oracle Base out of his head.

Miracleman, originally known as Marvelman, is a long out-of-print hero originating in British comics. His modern adventures, told in the ’80s by writers Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman with artists Gary Leach, Alan Davis, and Mark Buckingham, are cult-favorites among comic readers for their shockingly mature themes and the abrupt, unresolved ending of Gaiman’s run.

Marvel Comics purchased the rights to Miracleman way back in 2009 and has published collections of previously-published stories (opens in new tab). The publisher has tried to work through complicated legal hurdles involving the rights to the character so Gaiman and Buckingham could resume work on the character and finish their untold stories. Marvel has announced its coming publication to retailers several times, most recently in 2017 and then again in 2018, however, so far, the only appearance the character has made on the page is in 2019’s Marvel Comics #1000 (opens in new tab), which offered a similar one-page teaser that didn’t materialize.

Marvel again seems to be signaling plans to publish Gaiman and Buckingham’s new work.

Back to Timeless #1, Kang and Petrov manage to defeat the “Pirate Timeline” by killing the version of Reed Richards they find there, who has killed the Celestials, stolen the Infinity Stones, and taken up the mantle of Doom.

The special ends with a version of the Judgment Day teaser Marvel released online Monday.

With that, Timeless concludes, leaving its secrets to be uncovered in 2022 – which begins in just a few days.

]]> In the real world, the northern hemisphere just marked the Winter Solstice, but in the Marvel Universe, it’s almost spring – at least in terms of the publisher’s full advance solicitations for March 2022, which offer up a glimpse of what’s to come as the so-called ‘world outside your window’ of Marvel Comics thaws and new stories begin to bloom.

In these solicitations, you’ll get a glimpse of what’s to come for Spider-Man as the current ‘Spider-Man Beyond’ era that has taken Amazing Spider-Man and its spin-off titles weekly for the last few months reaches its end (hint – it looks like there’s gonna be a throwdown between Peter Parker and Ben Reilly, presumably for the right to be Spider-Man).

And of course, March marks the start of the ‘Destiny of X’ relaunch of the X-Men line, with the release of one of the line’s new flagship titles, Immortal X-Men #1, on March 30. Immortal X-Men focuses on the Quiet Council, Krakoa’s leadership, as Magneto leaves them behind and reveals some deeply held mutant secrets.

Carnage’s 30th anniversary celebration begins in full force in March, with both a new ongoing Carnage series and 23 ‘Carnage Forever‘ variant covers to run across the Marvel Comics line.

If that’s not enough, March 9’s Eternals #10 will mark the start of what Marvel is billing as the “lead-in to the biggest story of 2022” as the Eternals attempt to enter the Avengers’ base – which is currently located inside the dead body of the Celestial Progenitor – without Earth’s Mightiest Heroes taking notice. However, it seems a safe bet they won’t make it out scot-free, as ‘Eternals Quietly Steal From the Avengers’ doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as something like ‘Eternals vs. Avengers.’

And interestingly, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman will be heading to Hell’s Kitchen – the Daredevil haunt that inspired those Turtles – for a story in Marvel’s Elektra: Black, White & Blood #4.

]]> Marvel Comics’ The Reckoning War event begins in January 2022, featuring the return of a mysterious villainous force which writer Dan Slott tells Newsarama hasn’t been around in over 40 years. And while the identity of these antagonists remain Marvel‘s (and Slott’s) closely held secret, Newsarama has the first look at four of them.

Meet Rapture, Wrath, Reject, and Ruin – all designed by RB Silva:

While the villainous force of The Reckoning War apparently ges back to the ’70s (or even earlier), these four are newly-designed characters – meaning they’re new characters part of an already-estabished Marvel villain group, or they’re people fans might know but under new names and new clothes (hey, everybody deserves a makeover!)

“These are characters that have not really been around since their original appearance,” Slott tells Newsarama. “The very fact that they’re back, is something. The minute they walk onto the comics page… once people realize who they are and what they’ve done in the past, every part of your body will clench. These characters should not be back. The very fact that they are back means doom.”

These villains (and The Reckoning War) are all somehow connected to what Slott is calling Marvel Comics’ “first war,” eons before Secret Wars, The Kree/Skrull War, and more.

“There’s going to be a seminal moment at the start of The Reckoning War which will really define the stakes of it all,” Slott says. “And once we realize who the antagonists are, what they want, and why, everything will be understood.”

The Reckoning War Alpha is drawn by Carlos Pacheco, with Rachael Stott drawing the Fantastic Four issues.

“One of the most fun things about this job is writing ‘holy crap’ moments. In The Reckoning War Alpha and the Fantastic Four issues, there’s a ‘holy crap’ moment every couple of pages,” the writer continues. “‘WHAT?! Did they just do that?!’ Yes, we did.”

The event kicks off January 5, 2022 with The Reckoning War Alpha.

It looks like we might have to make some adjustments to our best Marvel supervillains list in the near future.

]]> Marvel Comics is setting up a winter wonderland of superhero goodness in its December 2021 solicitations, with five full weeks of comics planned for release in the final month of the year.

Those five weeks include five full-length issues of Amazing Spider-Man in the weekly ‘Spider-Man Beyond era,’ as well as a tie-in issue of Miles Morales: Spider-Man. Those issues feature the ‘Beyond’ era Spidey Ben Reilly clashing with Miles over the Beyond Corporation’s trademark of the Spider-Man name, while Peter Parker recovers from mysterious injuries in the hospital.

December also brings out a new variant cover initiative for Marvel called ‘Villains Reign’ in which popular Marvel heroes such as Captain America, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Hulk, and more are mashed up with Marvel super-villains.

And speaking of Captain America, he’s about to face some competition in the field of nationalized heroes, as the mutants are about to get their own patriotic defender, appropriately named Captain Krakoa. The mysterious hero has yet to be identified, but their identity will lead to some tension between Captain Krakoa and the rest of the X-Men.

]]> Christopher Cantwell is no stranger to the world of the Fantastic Four, as the writer of Marvel Comics’ ongoing Doctor Doom title. Now, on December 2, Cantwell will see how the other side lives with the Fantastic Four: Road Trip one-shot.

Featuring art from Felipe Andrade, Fantastic Four: Road Trip #1 (opens in new tab) will combine a lighthearted family vacation with a gruesome body horror twist, all set against the backdrop of Reed Richards’s secret experiments.

Newsarama spoke with Cantwell ahead of Road Trip’s release to discuss the writer’s own history with family trips, what it’s like writing flawed geniuses, and why this seemingly safe story will veer more into the realm of David Cronenberg than Chevy Chase.

Newsarama: Christopher, you’ve got plenty of experience writing Doctor Doom. What’s it like moving on to writing his enemies the Fantastic Four?

Christopher Cantwell: It’s a joy. I’ve mentioned this before about writing Iron Man, but heroes have tighter constraints on them in terms of their choice. It’s a box I like writing inside of because it’s fun to push against its walls without breaking them. And the FF is so upstanding and pure in so many ways that it was fun to honestly screw with that in a way that also felt true to them.

Nrama: A Grand Canyon road trip is a relatively ubiquitous experience for a certain generation – my family took one when I was 13. What personal family vacation memories are you drawing on for Fantastic Four: Road Trip?

Cantwell: I took so many road trips as a kid. Many were from Texas to St. Louis or Chicago—12 and 17 hours respectively. My parents almost always insisted on doing them straight through. I had family in both places so they would just do straight shots. I would be sprawled out in the back with comics and Star Wars toys price guides and all kinds of stuff.

But they’re also mind-numbing and rather disorienting. This whole story is very disorienting, so starting with so many people crammed in one car for a few hours felt like a good place to start. The funny thing is though, I have never been to the Grand Canyon. But most of my adult road trips have been through the Southwest, since I live in California.

Nrama: Seeing the title of the one-shot and knowing the Richards family, I thought of Chevy Chase and National Lampoon’s Vacation. But you mentioned a very different filmmaker when Fantastic Four: Road Trip was announced – David Cronenberg. How do you go about mashing up a family trip with extreme body horror?

Cantwell: Yeah this story is as if Cronenberg directed the original Vacation film. I picked the Grand Canyon because I wanted something all-American to contrast with what I was planning to do. Originally this issue was supposed to come out in the summer so I thought of a summer vacation. I also wanted to tell a quintessential family story because that is what the FF is at its very essence. Also, precisely because of movies like Vacation, audiences are kind of prepped for road trips to go awry. Vacation is an incredibly American movie.

The body horror side of that comes from my visceral response to the FF at an early age. I was very scared of the Thing when I was a kid because I imagined something like what we do in this book happening to his body. I have kind of intense trypophobia and something about the Thing’s skin really activates it in me. Also, the FF are mutants—in the true sense of the word, in that an externality was introduced into their physiology that changed them forever.

There’s something disturbing about that on a visceral level to me, to have one’s body become distorted or strange. It’s like how we also have a subconsciously strange appreciation of redheads. They’re literally mutants and I don’t mean that pejoratively. The gene has mutated. Mutation can be beautiful, powerful, and also quite horrific.

That’s the FF in a nutshell to me. I thought if I leaned into the extreme of that idea I could make it really upsetting. But then I combined it with the other integral part of the FF—family. The family operates best as one unit. Well… how far can we take that? Felipe and I take that pretty dang far.

Nrama: The solicit mentions Reed’s secret experiments. What can you tell us about what the FF are up against here?

Cantwell: The original title of this story was ‘Presolar Syndrome!’.

I wanted to harken back to old comic story titles and I also have this odd obsession with presolar grains and have for several years. It’s just dust but it also comes from stars older than our sun. I have actually been trying to do a sci-fi presolar grains story for seven years. I finally got one out there.

I know ‘presolar’ pops up in a lot of my comic work, I can’t even remember where at this point. So do go-to jargony words and phrases that I’ve made up over the years because I just like the way they sound: ‘Remote Quadrant Zulu,’ ‘Goss Sector,’ ‘Petawatt,’ ‘Graphene,’ ‘EON-DEF,’ ‘Ty-Con Battery,’ and other stuff that just pops up because I need to fill in a blank.

Dan Aykroyd did that a lot with Ghostbusters and I just love having my own dictionary of weird-sounding stuff.

Nrama: You’re building a small body of Marvel work based around odd twists – symbiote Santa, a body horror family adventure… What motivates you to find that kind of wrinkle in a more common Marvel story?

Cantwell: Marvel stories are like our modern-day Greek myths – ironclad in their lasting stories and also very malleable. It’s the best of both worlds.

I can rely on an audience’s collective knowledge of something but then also add something new or subvert it. The trick is to identify that unifying concept we can all agree upon and then twisting it in a way that is acceptable. I can’t always win over the whole audience with twists and I’m already experiencing that with some fans. But if I just build with dry cement blocks, it’s really uninteresting.

Nrama: Speaking of which, is there anything Marvel has said no to so far?

Cantwell: I have been so wildly surprised by their willingness to take big leaps in the books. I know the MCU is entirely different, as is the way CBS handles things like Star Trek, or Lucasfilm with Star Wars. Marvel Comics at least is like “go for it.”

It’s incredible to play with 60-year-old characters or even 75-year-old ones like Hellcat and really bend them around. It’s like an action figure collector handing these priceless figures from a shelf to a three-year-old who’s going to bang them together, and the three-year-old is me.

For the record though, there are action figures I have that I won’t let my three-year-old play with. Maybe that’s silly but I understand sometimes when Marvel says no.

I wanted to kill Mole Man in Doctor Doom. I’ve gone back and heavily revised scripts after conversations with my editors and they’ve always come out better.

Some characters get tied up by other titles coincidentally and aren’t available for use. I pitched an entire Witness limited series and there was clear consensus that there’s not a big enough audience for that. I’d love to do a Mistress Death mini.

But there’s so much freedom if I just go way to the back of Marvel’s garage and go “What about this Canadian hero that appeared in one issue in the ’70s” and they’re like “sure blast him to pieces or make him evil or have him become a talking spider.

Nrama: You’re working with Felipe Andrade on Fantastic Four: Road Trip. What does he bring to a story like this?

Cantwell: He has a surreality that is just amazing. It’s incredible. His work reminds me of Bill Plympton cartoons – grounded but then easily distorted and disturbing if need be. I personally have never seen the FF done like this before. We’re really leaning into their bizarre qualities here.

Nrama: How does he handle splitting the difference in the two sides of this story, the family adventure and the sci-fi horror?

Cantwell: They surprisingly blend together well. They’re a family and have to work together. Can they all put down their own agendas and have a nice vacation? Can they count on each other when it matters most?

Every great FF story does both… we just maybe added more horror.

But I mean imagine getting fried in a spaceship and all your DNA changing and looking and feeling so messed up after that. I mean there’s a version of the FF that is similar to Cronenberg’s The Fly, right? “What’s happening to my body?” is a freaky, freaky genre.

Nrama: You’ve got a few Marvel titles going right now, including Doctor Doom and Iron Man. You also created the TV show Halt and Catch Fire. What’s the allure of flawed geniuses like Doom, Tony Stark, and Reed Richards?

Cantwell: Ego blindness. The ultimate hollowness of the idea of ‘success.’

I think even Reed has it too, if maybe the least. But issue #9 of Doctor Doom deals with Reed and Doom finally, and I tried to write how Reed would be subtly passive aggressive to Doom in a way that is so maddening but also completely deniable.

Is it all in Doom’s head or is Reed actually messing with him? We’ll never know.

Reed is also an obsessive—which I am as well—and that ends up making someone very selfish even if it’s out of their control. But I mean, he’s also like, let’s make a Council of Me’s to run the universe. C’mon.

All the main characters in Halt and Catch Fire were flawed geniuses as well. To be so successful and driven I believe there’s a part of someone that makes them a bit of an asshole. It’s a ratio, really. How much of an asshole? What kind?

James Cameron insists that a klaxon horn sounds when he needs to go to set. Seriously.

Nrama: On that note, what sets Reed apart from Marvel’s other super geniuses?

Cantwell: Well, more to the last question, his selfish decisions might not be intentional at all. He simply believes he’s doing what’s best. He’s also more right than others much of the time. He’s got a higher batting average.

But again, not perfect. They’re all unavailable in their own ways.

Like if Captain America had geniuses on speed dial, 1 would be Reed but he’s in his lab and can’t be disturbed or if he tells you the answer you can’t understand it.

2 is maybe Tony Stark but no one can find him because he’s either gambling in Monte Carlo or tormenting himself somewhere in the exosphere.

3 is Bruce Banner – constantly changing places with Tony in the order, but maybe Bruce is destroying tanks or out of control and ripping apart trees for no reason.

4 is Hank Pym but like… wanting to talk too much and catch up and get a soda and isn’t taking it seriously enough.

5 is Peter Parker but you’ve got maybe a 50% success rate, plus Peter is so distracted that he often does the equivalent of shrugging and going “I don’t know, deal with it, I can’t right now.”

6 is Stephen Strange, but that’s very provincial and he’s like “Is it an ancient ghost?”

7 is Adam Brashear, but you know he’s going to school you on everything you say and maybe not consider the problem too serious or interesting for him.

8 is Hank McCoy and Charles Xavier but there is so much drama it might not be worth it.

And 9 is Victor Von Doom, and Cap has to be really really hard up to push that number.

Nrama: What’s next for you from Marvel, and elsewhere?

Cantwell: I’ve got a handful of indie books in development ranging from small thriller to sci-fi to fantasy, which I’ve never done. The final volume of my Berger Books title Everything will be out next year. In terms of Marvel, all I can say is… some other stuff.
