Thor: Love and Thunder may be the titular god’s fourth solo film, but Chris Hemsworth isn’t ruling out another return. The only condition is: it has to be something new, as the actor explains in the latest issue of Total Film, which features Love and Thunder on the cover

“Each time, if the opportunity comes up and presents itself, I’m just open to whatever creative exploration can happen, thanks to different writers and directors and so on,” the actor says of his journey so far. “But I love playing the character, I really do. It always comes down to: ‘Is this script different to the last one? Are we repeating something?’ And when it becomes too familiar, I think that’s when I’d have to say, ‘Yeah, no, this doesn’t… I think I’ve…'” He pauses, laughs. “I’d like to exit before people tell me to exit.”

Hemsworth isn’t the only one who thinks another appearance could be on the cards. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is of the never say never opinion, too. “I know this: there are many, many other Thor stories in the comics that we talk about a lot,” he says. “And as we watch Chris Hemsworth continue to grow and evolve as a major acting talent, I would be excited to see how he keeps evolving this complex character.”

There’s certainly plenty about Love and Thunder that’s different to what’s come before. Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster is transformed into Mighty Thor, while Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is King of Asgard.

We don’t have long to wait to see the film, either. Thor: Love and Thunder opens in UK cinemas on July 7, before opening in the US on July 8. For much more from Hemsworth, Feige, Portman, Thompson, Christian Bale, and director Taika Waititi, check out the new issue of Total Film (opens in new tab) when it hits shelves (and digital newsstands) this Thursday, June 23.

Top Gun: Maverick has been a long time coming. Now, though, 36 years after the original flew into cinemas, Maverick returns.

“Originally, I wasn’t interested in doing a sequel,” star and producer Tom Cruise tells Total Film magazine (opens in new tab) in the new issue, featuring Top Gun on the cover. “All over the whole world, people were asking for it, and asking for it. [Producers Don] Simpson and [Jerry] Bruckheimer – I remember back in ’87, they had an idea. It was the germ of the idea, actually, that ended up with the concept of [Top Gun: Maverick].”

That kernel was the relationship between Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell and Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw, the son of Mav’s former Radar Intercept Officer, Nick Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), better known as Goose. Goose died in the first film during an ejection gone wrong, sending Maverick into a guilt-ridden crisis. But, explains Cruise, “Just through time, the story was never right. I don’t do things just to do it.”

Cruise was also waiting for the technology to reach a certain point to enable him to bring the audience into the cockpit, “to put the audience inside that F/A-18”.

The sequel idea never really went away. “I had lots of discussions for years with Tony, with Jerry, with McQ [Christopher McQuarrie] about it, and when I was doing Oblivion, talking to Joe [Kosinski, director],” continues Cruise. “I just had to wait for that right moment. And I realized it was either going to be now or never. And basically, I liked the concept of the idea. And I was like, ‘Alright…’”

“We certainly played around with it,” says producer Bruckheimer of the decades-long development process. “But we never solved the problem of how to make another film.” Things kicked up a notch when Bruckheimer and Cruise met with Joseph Kosinski in Paris, during the shooting of Mission: Impossible – Fallout. “Joe had an idea for the movie,” explains Bruckheimer matter-of-factly. “And Tom loved the idea. And we loved it. So that’s where it all started.”

Top Gun: Maverick opens in UK cinemas on May 25, and US cinemas on May 27. For much more from Cruise, the new cast, and the filmmaking team of Kosinski, Bruckheimer, and McQuarrie, check out the new issue of Total Film (opens in new tab) when it hits shelves on Thursday 31 March.

Despite the exceedingly long wait – Avatar arrived to smash box-office records back in 2009 – the sequel is nearly upon us. So what took so long? In large part, producer Jon Landau says, it was down to writing not one but four scripts for the planned series of sequels up to Avatar 5.

“The scripts are the blueprint from which we work,” Landau tells Total Film magazine (opens in new tab) as part of our huge 2022 preview. “So a large portion of our time was writing… with the challenge that each of those four scripts had to individually resolve itself in a story that concludes with a big emotional resolution – but when you look at them as a whole, the connected story arc of all four movies creates an even larger epic saga.”

Avatar 2 – which sees James Cameron (exclusively pictured below on-set with Sam Worthington) return as director – specifically picks up with the Sully family, and as much time has elapsed in the story world as in reality. Jake (Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) are now parents.

“I think the story of Avatar 2, and the strength of the story, is what Jim [Cameron] always does in any of his movies: he writes in universal themes that are bigger than any one genre,” explains Landau. “And if you think about this, there’s really no more universal theme than family. At the center of each of our sequels is the Sully family. What are the dynamics that parents go through to protect their family?”

The Sullys’ idyllic life is disrupted when the RDA mining operation returns to Pandora, forcing Jake to take the family to “what is perceived as a safe harbor” at the reef. “And when you get to the reef, there’s a clan we call the Metkayina,” continues Landau. “The Sullys are no longer in the environment that they know, the rainforest. They become the fish out of water. They become the fish out of water from a cultural standpoint and from an environmental standpoint.”

Avatar 2 is set to arrive in cinemas 16 December 2022. For more from Landau on the upcoming film, pick up a copy of the new issue of Total Film (opens in new tab) when it hits stands on Thursday 9 December. The issue features Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam on the cover and rounds up the biggest films coming your way next year.

There’s a power shift going on in the DC universe. Where once Superman was the most powerful being, now comes another: Black Adam.

Dwayne Johnson will soon be bringing the anti-hero to the big screen, and Total Film sat down with the actor for the new issue of the magazine (opens in new tab) to talk about bringing Black Adam to life. Johnson reveals that the team behind the movie knew exactly what they wanted to do with the character – and were also acutely aware of what they didn’t want to do, too.

“You get one shot out of the gates to build these characters properly,” says Johnson. “We paid attention to some of the pitfalls that other films had experienced in the past, in the world of DC, and what, rightfully, got a lot of fans unhappy and pissed – and, as a fan, I was one of them.

“So, let’s make sure we respect tradition and mythology, but let’s not be handcuffed creatively. We can do anything if we keep the audience first. So to me, there’s a battle that’s going to go down one day, between Black Adam and Superman. I don’t know who that Superman is going to be, and I don’t know who’s going to play him. That’s OK. I don’t need to know right now. But I’m confident in knowing that [laughs]. And that’s based out of what fans want. We worked backwards from there.”

We’ve seen Batman v Superman, so why not Black Adam v Superman? The question, as Johnson alludes to, concerns which version of Superman he would face. There have been reports that Warner Bros. will reboot the Last Son of Krypton with a new, Black actor at the center. Meanwhile, Henry Cavill has kept the door open to a return. Whatever the case, we can hope to one day see The Man in Black and the Man of Steel trade punches one day.

Black Adam opens in cinemas on July 29, 2022. For much more on the film, check out the brand new issue of Total Film magazine (opens in new tab) when it hits stands (real and digital) from Thursday, December 9.

There’s no stopping Oscar Isaac. Having helped save the galaxy in Star Wars, acted as muse for the Coen brothers in Inside Llewyn Davis, and reigned over House Atreides in Dune, the somehow-still-not-Academy-Award-nominated actor will soon be a Marvel superhero thanks to Moon Knight.

The upcoming Disney Plus series, which is currently filming in Budapest, sees Isaac portray the title character – a US Marine who gains the powers of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. We still do not have an official look at the series, but, while talking with Isaac about Dune, Total Film asked about Moon Knight. Here’s what was said.

Total Film: How’s filming on Moon Knight going?

Oscar Isaac: Wonderful. Every morning, the alarm goes off, and I can’t wait to get to work. We’re having such a great time on this thing.

Were you excited to get back into that comic-book world after X-Men? Because you were open about that experience not necessarily being the best.

It’s not so much about the genre of things. It’s the people. And is there room to do something interesting in it? And sometimes there is, and you think there will be. And sometimes it turns out there isn’t.

So with this – I love the people involved. I thought there was an incredibly unusual story to tell within the world of, you know, the superhero language. But we’re making something that’s quite different, and that doesn’t follow the same… not necessarily even logic of what a lot of superhero films do.

I think because of that, I just found an opportunity to do something that I’ve not done at all yet, and to have a lot of creative collaboration with the rest of the people making it.

Moon Knight has directors Mohamed Diab and duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead attached, with the cast also including May Calamawy and Ethan Hawke. The series currently has a 2022 release window. For more, check out everything we know about Marvel Phase 4.

Meanwhile, Dune is scheduled to open in US cinemas and on HBO Max on October 22. It will open in UK cinemas on October 21. Jason Momoa may be the perfect person to play Duncan Idaho – the handsome swordsman from Dune who trains the leading character Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet in the upcoming movie.

Speaking with Total Film for the new issue, featuring Dune on the cover, Momoa revealed how he bonded with Chalamet behind the scenes – and there was a whole lot of teasing, as well as hurt groins. Here’s an extract from our Q&A with Momoa.

Total Film: How did you and Timothée bond?

Momoa: It was exactly like in the film – he’s like a little brother. He’s so intelligent. He’s something else to watch. He’s such a beautiful actor and considerate. He cares about his craft way more than I do. It’s just impressive to be around people like that.

Do you tease Timothée in the same way Duncan teases Paul?

That joke [about muscles in the trailer] came from me. There are these outtakes where I went up to Timmy, and I go, “Look at you, dick and ribs.” Denis comes up and says, “What is this talk about the ribs and his dick? I don’t understand.” I’m like, “Well, it’s funny, because Timmy’s so skinny.” He’s like, “OK. Maybe you can do it in another way?” But Timothée [got me back]. When I hug him he kneed me in the balls so hard! You can see it if you watch in slo-mo.

Fans will know that Duncan goes on an interesting journey in subsequent books…

He does, doesn’t he? If the films go well, I’ve got a good future.

Dune is scheduled to open in US cinemas and on HBO Max on October 22. It will open in UK cinemas on October 21. Some video game movies are claptrap and some have Claptrap. The latter, of course, is the chatterbox robot from Gearbox’s energetic Borderlands franchise – which is set to be adapted into a big screen adventure by Eli Roth.

Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Dr. Patricia Tannis in the upcoming release, has spoken to Total Film magazine ahead of its new issue to ratchet up the hype levels even further for those hoping Borderlands will shatter the video game movie curse. Spoilers: it sure sounds like the movie is keeping its inimitable tone of loud, in-your-face humour.

“It’s bonkers. It is badonkadonk bonkers,” Curtis said. “It is incredible what they have done visually and creatively, from set design, costume design, camera design, a great script, and an eclectic but very fun, wonderful family of actors, leading it all off with Cate [Blanchett], who was beyond – and so committed and dedicated to this work. I think you are going to be so happy.”

“But it’s bonkers. It is nutty mcnutty. It is definitely nutty mcnutty,” Curtis reiterated.

Borderlands, featuring Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, and Jack Black as Claptrap, has now finished filming and is set for release in 2022.

Want more from Jamie Lee Curtis? The Halloween Kills actor has teased more of the “brutal” sequel as part of Total Film’s cover feature.

Following on the heels of WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki is set to continue the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s small-screen expansion on Disney Plus.

Where those previous series focused on duos in one form or another, the spotlight is very much on the God of Mischief here, picking up from the events of Avengers: Engame (opens in new tab), albeit the part of that film where they revisit the timeline of 2012’s The Avengers (opens in new tab), as Loki has just had his plans for subjugating Earth destroyed by the Tony Stark and co.

In Endgame’s timeline-troubling antics, Loki was able to spirit himself away from the fray when he got his hands on the Tesseract, totally forking the timeline. Where did he go? We’re about to find out… Seems that the Time Variance Authority (TVA) needs him to help fix the mess he created.

Loki is on the cover of the upcoming issue of our sister publication, Total Film magazine (opens in new tab). Below you can see three exclusive new images from the cover story, featuring Tom Hiddleston’s Loki with Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku), the TVA’s Judge Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), and Hiddleston and Wilson behind the scenes with director Kate Herron. Check them out now:

The TVA is a bureaucratic nightmare, existing outside of time and space as a sort of omnipotent overseer of timelines, hence their beef with Loki. Hunter B-15 is the muscle who brings Loki in, Renslayer is one of the TVA’s powerful judges, and Mobius is something of a Loki expert, and he’s excited to finally come face-to-face with the figure he’s been fascinated by for so long.

Loki launches on on Disney+ from June 9, with the first of six weekly episodes. For much more on the show, and exclusive interviews with Hiddleston and the cast, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, director Kate Herron and head writer Michael Waldron, pick up a copy of the latest issue of Total Film magazine (opens in new tab), which hits shelves real and digital on Friday, May 28.

With Johnny Depp no longer playing Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts movies, Hollywood’s finest character actor, Mads Mikkelsen has stepped up to the unenviable task of playing the villain. There are a lot of questions regarding the upcoming movie and Total Film, sitting down with Mikkelsen for the new issue of the magazine (headlined by The Suicide Squad), asked what we can expect to see.

“We’ve wrapped it up,” Mikkelsen says of Fantastic Beasts 3. “Obviously I have only been part of it for half the time that the rest of the gang has. It was a lovely experience. I think they had a really great script; a great, solid story. So if that is anything to measure on, I think the film will be… you know, as magical as it has to be, with all the wonderful creatures, but also quite beautiful. There are some really interesting, heartbreaking stories in there. And hopefully that will come across. “

Regarding his version of Grindelwald, the actor compares his interpretation to how he played Hannibal following Anthony Hopkins’ iconic portrayal of the character. “This is obviously a more direct comparison because it’s the next film,” he says. “So we have done a few bridges that will allow us to recognize it, but we’ve also said we have to make it our own. I have been a fan of Johnny Depp since I saw him as a young man, and to try to bring his intensity and his way of doing it into my work is a no-go. I have to find my own, because his is unique, and I just have to let that be, and find a different path.”

The Suicide Squad are going on another mission – and this time, things are even more deadly. While 2016’s Suicide Squad saw a few notable names perish amid the action (RIP Slipknot, we hardly knew you), the new take on the comic book villains promises a fair few characters won’t survive until the end.

In fact, director James Gunn has revealed that the studio behind the production, Warner Bros., said he could kill anyone and everyone he wanted.

“They said I could keep [all the characters] or do away with them all,” he tells Total Film in the new issue, headlined by The Suicide Squad. “I could do a completely new squad – which I considered – and they said, ‘You can kill anyone.’ Warner were pretty much on board [with the story] from the beginning – it was pretty much firmly in place from the inception of me taking on the project. They were very trusting of me throughout the entire process, almost to the degree to which I was frightened, because it really is all me, 100 per cent – there’s no one to blame if something goes wrong, except for myself!”

Does that mean Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Bloodsport are all dead meat? Well, you will have to wait and find out. Gunn also spoke about how Warner Bros. approached him about the project, with the studio offering the filmmaker any DC property, including Superman.

“Warner came a-calling pretty immediately upon the news,” Gunn recalls, referring to the news that Disney had removed him from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (he was later reinstated as director). “I think everything kind of went down [with Disney] on like a Friday, and I think by Monday, Warners were trying to get a hold of me to talk to me about Superman and a bunch of other stuff. But it took me a little while to decide what I was going to do – I really just needed to take care of myself from an emotional and spiritual place.

“Before agreeing to anything, I took the three ideas that excited me the most,” he continues. “Two were actually DC projects, and then the other one was an original idea. For about a month, every other day I worked on one of those projects, trying to see where the ideas would go. The Suicide Squad really did seem the thing that excited me the most. That’s when I went and told DC – because they’d offered me basically anything [I wanted to make] – that the one I wanted to do was The Suicide Squad.”

Inside the new issue, Total Film (opens in new tab) talks in-depth with writer/director Gunn, and cast members including Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, John Cena, Daniela Melchior and Peter Capaldi. And that’s not all – elsewhere in the issue, Total Film goes on set of Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, speaks to Barry Jenkins about his long-form adaptation of The Underground Railroad, and there are interviews with Robin Wright, Ben Wheatley, and Mads Mikkelsen.

The Suicide Squad opens in UK cinemas on August 6 (and debuts in cinemas and on HBO Max on the same date in the US). The new issue of Total Film hits newsstands real and digital this Friday, April 30 (opens in new tab). Check out the new super-size covers, as revealed by James Gunn, below…
